What if joy isn't the absence of discomfort, but something we can feel even in the thick of it?In this episode of Conversations from the Heart, I speak with three brave callers, each grappling with the tension between what they feel and how they long to show up. From emotional resentment in a professional friendship, to the struggle to be kind and also firm, to standing up to power without collapsing in fear, these conversations are raw, real, and deeply human. We explore how to:•Navigate mixed feelings without needing to clean them up or figure them out.•Stay connected to yourself in moments of not-knowing.•Reclaim your voice without abandoning your values.•Recognize when you're operating from self-trust and when you're just coping.•Use healthy anger to build connection rather than break it down.Whether you're floundering in a relationship, feeling dismissed in a conversation, or being shamed for speaking truth to power … this episode invites you back to yourself.Spoiler: It's possible to feel at peace even in the middle of the mess. Happiness is a choice. But it's not always an easy choice to make.Mo Gawdat had to face an impossible choice. Before he was a bestselling author and podcast host, Mo worked a lucrative career as Chief Business Officer at Google X. He reached the heights of business influence and amassed a fortune by 29. And yet, he was miserable. It was only after the tragic death of his 21-year-old son Ali that Mo was forced to confront the truth.Mo now dedicates his life, work, and research to figuring out how human beings can be happier, and he's on a mission to make 1 billion people happy. He sat down with me to share what he's learned – that happiness is both a choice and our default setting, how to trick our brains out of survival mode, and why the happiest emotions we feel are rooted in the present, not the past or future. This…is A Bit of Optimism. To learn more about Mo and his work, check out:mogawdat.com

The first step is to consider what's caused the drift in your marriage in the first place. Second, you must be willing to address your resentments because nothing will go well when there's active resentments. Third, you must nurture your friendship through emotional intimacy, dates, and affection. Fourth, you must re-integrate sensual and sexual time together to bond with one another physically. Finally, if you're unable to achieve these steps on your own reach out for professional help instead of suffering in silence.

Ep 141. Do you know your top five values? Or even your top three? Often, we think we are making decisions based on our values, but we may be unknowingly making decisions based on our fears. This week, Dr. Molly Burrets, a highly regarded licensed clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Southern California (USC), is breaking down the psychology behind values-based decision-making. If you're someone who often feels at odds when making decisions, like two parts of your brain are arguing and pulling apart from each other? Dr. Molly expertly explains what is happening on a psychological level and how to break the cycle we often find ourselves in when fear creeps into our decision-making. She breaks down the dynamics of control – why we seek control to gain safety and how this can hinder our ability to attain genuine connection in our relationships. Her insights on the pursuit of safety, with control leading to hypervigilance, were truly one of those moments on the podcast that will stop you in your tracks. Dr. Molly is truly brilliant with unwavering emotional intelligence. She breaks down everything from learning your no's to why high-achieving women often struggle with connection. This episode is for anyone who has ever had to make a difficult decision and wondered or doubted if they made the right choice. HERE'S THE JUICE: The life-changing knowledge that things are going to go wrong, why practicing radical acceptance in place of avoidance could change your life Why do we often take control in an attempt to gain safety? Is it possible to experience joy and control simultaneously? How to quiet your mind to notice what is meant to you in life – the phone is constantly ringing, but we have to learn to pick up. Breaking down why our unhealthy coping mechanisms are often what is preventing us from following the path that is meant for us in life The importance of noticing your own body daily and learning how to listen to what it is telling you Tangible language to use when exercising a “no” with both the relationships we want to keep and relationships we want to let go of Why using safe people to practice our “no's” is the key to setting larger boundaries in life. Apparently something's horribly wrong in the LGBTQ+ community. Various politicians like Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer sound the alarm!
“So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33 NLT) Selfishness is the secret to an unhappy marriage. Too often two people enter into marriage saying, “I want my way.” The husband says, “You do what I say.” And the wife says, “I want it my way.” Because of selfishness, couples riddle their marriage with friction. It all comes down to self. Genesis 2:24 says, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one” (NLT). But parents aren’t the only things marriage partners must leave behind. There’s also the priority of self, the tendency to place your needs and wants above everything else. If two people are “looking out for number one,” they’re going to have a hard time being “united into one.” Today, there are marriages dissolving because spouses are trying to “find themselves.” Listen, husbands and wives! If you want to find yourself, you need to lose yourself. Remember what Jesus said, “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39 NIV). If you want to find yourself and have a biblical marriage, learn the secret. Stop thinking about yourself and approach your marriage saying, “I want to love, please, and help my mate. I want to care about my spouse more than I care about myself.” This is biblical. Before Paul ever says in Ephesians 5:22, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord” (NIV), and before he ever says in verse 25, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (NIV), he says in verse 21, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (NIV). That word submit means “to place or arrange under.” The idea is a voluntary submission. Paul is saying to voluntarily place your needs under the needs of your spouse. Operate with the mindset that your spouse comes first. This principle of selfless service is so important that God makes it the model for all our interactions. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:3–4, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too” (NLT). Following these guidelines in our daily encounters is a powerful testimony of our Christian faith. Following them in our marriage is a powerful expression of love and commitment. If you prioritize the needs of your spouse and work hard to meet those needs, you’ll find that something amazing happens. You’ll find that your own needs get met in time, because you’ll be in God’s order, and your spouse will be, too. And God will bless your union in ways you can’t imagine.
