When leaders are unhappy at work, they often blame the company. But more often it's a sign of dissatisfaction with their own inability to work within the constraints of the job. No job is perfect. Every role comes with constraints: things that stop you from operating at your best. Whether it's a bad boss, a lack of resources, or unrealistic expectations, the question isn't whether your job has constraints: it's whether or not you can live with them.If you don't proactively manage the constraints then, over time, you might not like who you have to become to function in your role.In this episode, I reveal the difference between genuine constraints and the artificial constraints; I explore the symptoms of unhappiness at work; and I give you three critical mindset shifts that will pull your focus off the daily grind and onto the long game, and get back to peak performance.Links mentioned in this episode:No Bullsh!t Leadership episodes:Ep.361: The Hidden Cost of Creeping FrustrationLBT link:Leadership Beyond the Theory————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. Selling To Corporate
Doing everything but your sales process still isn't converting in the way you want?

Selling To Corporate

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2026 36:30

Every August, Jess hears the same story on repeat: decision makers are on holiday, budgets are frozen, nobody's picking up the phone, so why bother? In this episode, Jess pushes back on that, hard. More decision makers and stakeholders are booking sales calls this August than she's seen in the last two years, and her own clients, working across leadership, performance, executive coaching, and fractional HR, are signing forty thousand pound retainers and hitting their entire annual revenue targets in six or seven months. It's not quiet out there - not even close! Jess is clear that when a sales process stalls, or a sales pipeline stops converting, it's rarely the market's fault, and it usually comes down to one of three things.  First, contagious negativity: doom and gloom talk spreads through business communities faster than success stories do, the same way an unhappy customer tells far more people about a bad experience than a happy one tells about a good one. If everyone around you is agreeing that nothing's working, it's easy to absorb that as fact instead of checking it against your own numbers. Second, strategy hopping: jumping from cold email outreach, to LinkedIn outreach, to networking, to trade shows, without ever giving a single method the time, volume, or clearly defined success markers it needs to prove itself. Most coaches and consultants haven't been taught what a lead generation channel is actually supposed to produce.  Its job is to book qualified sales calls, not close deals on its own, so judging an outreach campaign by how many sales it generated directly, rather than how many qualified conversations it opened, is an unfair test from the start. When that test fails, the channel gets written off and the search for a new one begins again, wiping out whatever progress had already been made. Third, and often the reason the other two happen at all, is not having a proven, best practice sales process to troubleshoot against in the first place. Without one, there's no baseline to compare results to, no way to tell whether a tactic is underperforming or simply hasn't had enough time, and no way to tell a genuine problem apart from ordinary variation.  This is made worse by a gap that rarely gets talked about: most coaches and consultants have invested heavily in qualifications for their specialism, whether that's leadership, HR, nutrition, or executive coaching, but very few of those qualifications include any formal sales training. Learning to sell on top of learning to deliver is a genuinely big undertaking, and struggling with it in year one is normal, not a personal failing. The real cost of strategy hopping isn't the time spent on any single failed attempt. It's staying stuck in the hardest, least comfortable phase of selling to corporate clients for far longer than necessary, because every reset means relearning lessons that a fully implemented, properly measured process would only have taught once. Coaches and consultants who commit to a single proven process, follow it as designed, and give it defined time and volume before judging it, tend to move through that difficult first phase once and into a far more sustainable place: referrals, inbound leads, and account maximisation with existing clients. So if you're heading into the final stretch of summer wondering whether to pause lead generation until September, the evidence points the other way. Corporate decision makers are still active, still booking calls, and still signing contracts. The businesses seeing the strongest results right now aren't the ones with an easier market. They're the ones executing, and honestly troubleshooting, a sales process they actually trust. Key Quotes "The purpose of lead generation is to book qualified sales calls." "That attitude is contagious. Happy customers will talk about their experience with a company to one or two people. Unhappy customers tell on average ten people how unhappy they are about something." "The hardest bit of selling to companies is the first year doing it, because in the first year selling to companies, you are learning and implementing all new skills."   Key Takeaways 1. The Market Isn't the Problem. The Story About the Market Is. A slow market isn't universal, it's what happens when a proven process isn't being run. 2. Negativity Is Contagious, and It Spreads Faster Than Success Does. One unhappy voice in your peer group can talk ten more people into believing the market's dead. 3. There's a Real Difference Between Positive Critique and Defeatist Thinking. Diagnosing a specific gap fixes your process; writing off a whole channel after one bad week doesn't. 4. There's a Clear Divide Between People Who Fully Implement a Strategy and People Who Hop Between Them. Chasing a quick win means never finishing anything long enough to know if it actually works. 5. Customising a Proven Template Often Breaks It. Tweak a proven template and you lose the ability to tell whether the strategy failed or your edit did. 6. Very Few People Selling to Companies Have Ever Been Taught to Sell. Nobody trains coaches and consultants to sell, so struggling with it in year one is normal, not a failure. 7. Every Sales Activity Is an Experiment, and Experiments Need Defined Success Markers. Without defined success markers upfront, you can't tell if a tactic is failing or just unfinished. 8. Strategy Hopping Keeps You Stuck in the Hardest Part of Selling to Corporates, on Repeat. Every reset sends you back to the hardest, least profitable stage of selling to corporates. 9. August Is a Genuine Opportunity, Not a Dead Zone. Waiting for September to restart outreach guarantees a slow start to Q4.   If you've enjoyed listening to Doing everything but your sales process still isn't converting in the way you want? We kick off by looking at the heavy Italian influence running through the club, from the dugout to the blockbuster signing of Sandro Tonali, and ask whether our guest finally has a soft spot for Spurs. Attention then turns to the transfer market and De Zerbi's ruthless new streak. We discuss the manager's stark ultimatum regarding Lucas Bergvall's future and debate whether letting the highly-rated Swede leave would be a massive mistake or simply an inevitable consequence of Mateus Fernandes' arrival. We also dissect Micky van de Ven's recent quotes, exploring what his comments reveal about the gloomy atmosphere under Thomas Frank last season and the much-needed injection of passion and offensive football De Zerbi has brought to the group. Finally, we look at the missing pieces of the puzzle. With De Zerbi wanting more attacking talent through the door, we assess our current forward line and discuss whether reported targets like Savinho and Eli Junior Kroupi are the players who can truly move the needle. Send me a message There are agents/team leaders on the RealTrends list who look like they're crushing it. I'm talking about the big teams, with signs in every neighborhood and 100's of millions in sales. From the outside, they look like everything you should aspire to as a real estate agent. They're also miserable. Many are burned out, on their third marriage, rarely every see their family, or haven't taken a real vacation in years. This all comes back to one mistake almost every agent makes early on. Chances are, you made this mistake yourself, and likely have no idea. I just got back from a week in Maui where I completely checked out, and it gave me the clarity to finally put words to this.In this episode:The mistake the entire industry teaches you without realizing itWhy letting your day control you is 180 degrees different from controlling your dayThe non-negotiables I build my calendar around every single dayWhy the night before is when you should plan tomorrow, not the morning ofHow to know when it's time to outsource, instead of doing it all yourselfThe story of an agent closing deals in Florida while living in another stateHow to reverse engineer your business around the life you actually wantDefine your life first, then build your business around it. ***********************RESOURCES :Free "Clients From Social" Masterclass - Learn the new formula top agents are using on social media to attract 5+ new closings, month after month. Why Did 'The View' Lie About the Karmelo Anthony Jury? | 6/24/26

You HAVE to see this — the women of "The View" just got the Karmelo Anthony stabbing case completely WRONG, and their race-baiting lies are blowing up in their faces! Pat Gray breaks down the shocking misinformation "The View" pushed about the Texas track meet murder for which Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years for stabbing Austin Metcalf. From claiming it wasn't a "jury of his peers" because there were no black jurors (a total myth — "jury of peers" means from the community, not by race) to lying about Anthony's weight being 130 pounds to falsely saying he was the "only black kid under the tent" — when multiple black witnesses actually testified against him. "The View" ignored the facts: Anthony was the aggressor, brought a knife, ignored repeated warnings to leave, and stabbed Metcalf in the heart over a shove. This isn't justice — it is anti-woke media spinning a clear murder case to divide Americans. We also cover: 29% of New Yorkers now admit they HATE how New York is going. James Talarico openly HATES Christianity. Have you seen the missing Texas giraffe? Lizzo's latest album, “Bitch,” completely flops — here's why. Pat gives a painful update on his home renovation (and it's not good). Drop your thoughts in the comments RIGHT NOW: Do you think "The View" is deliberately lying to push a race narrative? YES or NO? What shocked you most about the show's misinformation on the Karmelo Anthony case? Should shows like "The View" be held accountable for spreading false information? I read every single comment from fellow patriots like you — your voice matters in the fight for truth! Gwendolyn Dolske and Rudy Salo welcome Casey Berman: former attorney, founder of Leave Law Behind (the leading coaching program helping attorneys transition into non-legal careers), multipreneur, strategy consultant, speaker, and author, for a discussion about work, identity, happiness, and the courage it takes to choose a different life. Casey knows this territory from the inside. He lived it. And he has spent years helping thousands of attorneys find what he calls their Unique Genius, the specific intersection of talent and joy that, when aligned with their work, produces not just professional success but the deeper contentment that a career in law, for many, was never able to provide. What we explore in this episode: The reality of life inside the legal profession, the hours, the pace, the stress, the culture, and why so many attorneys feel trapped even when their career looks successful from the outside What you can actually do with a law degree that doesn't involve practicing law, and why the answer is far broader and more interesting than most law students are ever told: consulting, compliance, legal technology, entrepreneurship, writing, business development, policy, education, coaching, and more than 100 documented alternatives The specific steps Casey recommends for assessing whether your unhappiness is situational (the wrong firm, the wrong practice area, the wrong city) or fundamental (the wrong career entirely), and why getting that diagnosis right is the most important first step How to get feedback from the people in your life, family, friends, colleagues, mentors, to identify what you are genuinely good at, what lights you up, and where your skills create value outside a courtroom or a contract review Bertrand Russell and The Conquest of Happiness, and why Russell's argument that most human unhappiness is self-generated and rooted in the wrong relationship to work maps precisely onto what Casey has observed in the legal profession for over a decade What Russell wrote about the sunk cost of identity: why we must be willing to let go of what we have invested in, emotionally, financially, intellectually, when it's clear it is not our talent or our strength, and why it is not only acceptable but necessary to grieve the self you thought you would be Rudy's perspective as a lawyer who stayed, and his advice for law students: do not let go of what makes you happy, because the time you spend on those things (screenwriting, acting, podcasting) will make you a better lawyer, not a worse one Casey's thoughts on the role of AI in law, what this means for the profession and those going into law. The philosophy of the examined career: what Socrates, Russell, and Casey Berman all agree on about the relationship between self-knowledge, honest feedback, and the possibility of genuine happiness in your work Books Mentioned in this episode (with Amazon Affiliate link): The Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell The Million Dollar One Person Business by Elaine Pofeldt The Ancient Art of Thinking For Yourself: The Power of Rhetoric in Polarized Times by Robin Reames Guest: Casey Berman: founder of Leave Law Behind, the leading coaching program helping attorneys identify and transition into fulfilling non-legal careers. Multipreneur, strategy consultant, speaker, and storyteller. Former attorney. His work has been featured across major media and podcast platforms. Based in San Francisco.
