The Big Beautiful Bill is finally past the quiet phase. The behind-the-scenes negotiations have spilled into the open, and now we're in the bloodletting. Speaker Mike Johnson wants this out of the House by Memorial Day, which means committee votes need to happen, and fast. But right now, the Budget Committee is a problem. Hardliners are balking — Ralph Norman, Josh Brecheen, and Chip Roy are all leaning no. They're not satisfied with the Congressional Budget Office's timeline for a cost estimate, and they're worried the Medicaid changes could pressure red states into expanding coverage.Mike Lawler and Marjorie Taylor Greene are fighting on Twitter over SALT deductions — state and local tax breaks — and that fight is not going away. There's talk of raising the cap from $30,000 to $40,000 or adjusting the phase-out thresholds. But this is exactly why they're doing one big bill instead of multiple smaller ones. Everyone knew it was going to be painful. Nobody wanted to go through this kind of battle again and again for every policy item.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Still, I'm bullish. It's ugly right now, but that doesn't mean it's doomed. The usual sign of failure — a flood of press conferences from members declaring the bill dead — hasn't happened. Republicans aren't holding cameras. They're texting reporters. They're venting in group chats. But they're not going on record saying they'll tank Trump's agenda. That's a big difference. This isn't like other bills I've seen die. It still feels like something they're going to get through — just barely. The key players are all doing what they need to do. Trump is overseas for now, but his influence is still real. He got Johnson the speaker's gavel. He's kept this whole thing moving. When he's back, the pressure campaign ramps up. Meanwhile, JD Vance is already starting his Senate charm offensive to get reconciliation done once it clears the House. They know they'll lose a few senators, but they're planning for that. The goal is to get something — anything — through. And here's what's actually in it: no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and no tax on Social Security for anyone making under $150,000. Yes, those provisions sunset in four years, but let's be honest — once they go into effect, they're not going anywhere. Nobody's going to vote to take those benefits away from working people. Republicans used to hate that logic — the “give a mouse a cookie” approach to entitlements — but now they're writing the cookies themselves. And they're going to love running on them. This bill is messy. It's jammed with contradictions. It's being held together with string and prayers. But I still think it passes. And if it does, the Trump administration gets to claim a huge legislative win — not just a headline, but real, sticky policy that people will feel in their paychecks. That's the ballgame.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:52 - Big Beautiful Bill Progress00:15:51 - Interview with Bill Scher00:39:39 - Update00:40:23 - Inflation00:43:36 - Supreme Court Birthright Citizenship00:45:44 - Iran Nuclear Deal, "Sort Of"00:47:57 - The News Sheriff00:53:03 - Interview with Bill Scher (con't)01:18:02 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. We also break down the controversial Emmanuel Navarrete vs. Charlie Suarez fight, where a punch-caused cut was incorrectly ruled a headbutt before being changed to a no-contest instead of giving Suarez his rightful victory. Whether you're a diehard boxing fan or simply intrigued by the sport's constant drama, this episode captures the passion, frustration, and unwavering love that keeps us coming back despite boxing's perpetual two steps forward, one step back evolution. Rachel Maddow reviews the many ways in which Donald Trump has made history with the first 100 days of his second term, though none of these achievements are anything to be proud of, and Americans are growing increasingly vocal about their displeasure.
Let's take a big-picture look at the first 100 days of Donald Trump's second term; the least popular start to any presidency in modern American history. With approval ratings plunging as low as 39%, Tristan breaks down why Trump's support has cratered so fast, from economic mismanagement and spiraling prices to broken promises on law and order and the rise of billionaire bros in government. This episode unpacks the political science behind presidential approval, why independents are abandoning Trump in droves, and what these numbers mean for the coming midterms.

Coca-Cola was approaching its 100th birthday on 23rd April, 1985, when it unveiled a new beverage at New York City's Lincoln Center: the ‘smoother, rounder, bolder' flavour of ‘New Coke'. The success of Diet Coke had fragmented the market, and, in response to Pepsi's aggressive marketing campaigns targeting younger consumers, Coke had sought to introduce a sweeter formula. But, instead of offering the new formula alongside the original, they made the catastrophic decision to discontinue their classic recipe, known as Merchandise 7X. The company had conducted extensive taste tests involving 190,000 consumers, which indicated a preference for the new formula. However, these tests overlooked the deep emotional connection many had with the original Coke. Protest groups like the Society for the Preservation of the Real Thing and Old Cola Drinkers of America, founded by Gay Mullins, emerged, reflecting the public's dissatisfaction, and, just 79 days after the launch, on July 11th, 1985, Coca-Cola held a press conference to announce the return of the original formula - now branded as "Coca-Cola Classic." It's been a helluva week for the news cycle and our social feeds - Katy Perry's been on Amazon's first, girls only, space trip (for exactly 11 minutes), Aimee Lou Wood has taken to Instagram stories to call out an off colour joke about herself on Saturday Night Live and everyone has taken to ChatGPT to generate extremely specific and fairly ugly blister packed dolls of themselves. Stuck between which to cover, we decided to dig into it all.In this week's episode, hosts Ione and Gina take apart everything wrong with the Blue Origin rocket trip that took an all female crew into space on the 14th April including the environmental impact, classism implications and faux feminism the journey's being marketed as. After the break, the pair get into the cringe inducing AI created dolls so many of our peers are posting on the Insta as well as the disheartening SNL impersonation that's caused distress for The White Lotus actress Aimee Lou Wood.Support our work and become a Polyester Podcast member
