In this episode of Paradigm Shifting Books, hosts Stephen and Britain Covey begin a powerful two-part conversation with Dr. Craig Manning, author of The Fearless Mind. Part 1 unpacks why knowing who you truly are and unapologetically embracing your strengths is the foundation of consistent high performance.Dr. Manning shares his journey from athlete to performance psychologist, explains why he reframed “high performance” as human performance, and reveals how to build skills around your unique strengths instead of chasing someone else's path. From the science of confidence to stories of elite athletes like Giannis Antetokounmpo scoring 50 points in the NBA Finals, this conversation makes mental performance training both practical and inspiring. The episode also highlights how the same principles apply outside of sports, in business, leadership, and everyday life. Because at its core, high performance isn't about outcomes, it's about identity. If you've ever felt the weight of comparison, pressure from authority figures, or uncertainty about your strengths, this episode offers a new framework to unlock your potential. What We Discuss[00:00] Introduction[01:27] Why Dr. Manning wrote The Fearless Mind and how it began as a personal project[08:18] Giannis Antetokounmpo's “unapologetically ourselves” mindset before scoring 50 in the NBA Finals[11:19] Why comparison leads to insecurity and how to break free from it[22:32] Generational shifts: why Gen Z thinks differently and how collaboration beats hierarchy[30:39] Why trying to be someone you're not sabotages performance[32:05] The power of owning your lane in a collaborative, commitment-based cultureNotable Quotes[00:08:54] “When you know who you are and you trust yourself, you don't care what others think—you just perform.” — Dr. Craig Manning[00:11:37] “Comparison leads to insecurities. Insecurities lead to needing approval. And needing approval destroys confidence.” — Dr. Craig Manning[00:14:42] “The key to success is not being a stereotype. It's being the best version of yourself.” — Dr. Craig Manning[00:22:07] “Your identity is here in the present. What about the Saints winning Super Bowl XLIV? Does the David Tyree helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII grab a spot? Does the Michael Jordan buzzer beater in the 1998 NBA Finals or the Cubs winning the 2016 World Series deserve a place?   After that, they discuss which Sports Calls will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that "Do You Believe in Miracles?" shouldn't get a spot? Will "Behind the Bag" be included? Is "May Day, May Day, May Day" in the conversation? What about "The Red Sox are World Champions" or "Havlicek Stole the Ball"?   Prior to that, the trio pay tribute to the memory of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Ozzy Osbourne, and Hulk Hogan.

Over three decades later Reggie's impact is still being felt in Boston and across Celtics nation. Taking the torch from Larry Bird, battling Michael Jordan head-to-head, and becoming one of the best two-way players in the league, Reggie was a rising star on and off the floor as his community presence and generosity was as impressive as his jumper. One of the NBA's greatest what ifs, Reggie became Captain of the Celtics in 1992, before what would shockingly be his final season. Sign up for the Derek Thompson newsletter. In Game 7 of this year's NBA Finals, Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles in the first quarter while attempting to drive to the basket on an injured calf. It was the third major Achilles injury of the 2025 NBA playoffs. Curiously, Achilles tears are typically an older-dude injury, as they're most common in middle-aged men, according to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Biomechanics. So the sudden clustering of this injury among star athletes in their prime has inspired a lot of head-scratching among NBA fans and even the league itself. “We had already convened a panel of experts before Tyrese's most recent Achilles rupture,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. When you zoom out from basketball and consider the broader landscape of sports, the injury surge seems quite real. In baseball, we've seen a huge increase in the so-called "Tommy John surgery," which repairs a torn UCL in a pitcher's elbow. In soccer, ACL injuries have been rising, particularly in women's soccer. And that's before we get to the huge amount of media attention that's been paid to concussions in football. What's going on here? Vern Gambetta, a conditioning coach, trainer, and adviser to professional soccer, baseball, basketball, and Olympics teams, explains why major injuries might be surging across sports—and what it tells us about the risks of pushing the human body to its physical limit. This week Ben Bruno makes his 5th appearance on the Industrial Strength Show and it just may be his best [most impactful] appearance yet! Ben has been "catchin' strays" from a handful of outspoken coaches online who [indirectly] blame him for an injury that occurred during the NBA Finals to one of his clients. Ben has NOT responded to the criticism online, but on today's show he speaks out on the topic of "Personal Trainers & Injury Prevention - Who's To Blame When An Athlete Gets Hurt?" Ben also explains the logistics of training pro athletes in the off-season [As you'll find out - the general public has NO IDEA what really goes on behind-the-scenes]. Furthermore, Ben candidly reveals his current frustration with social media, ie, the type of content that goes viral vs the type of content that "flops". Additionally, you'll hear Joe D's unsolicited advice to Joel Seedman and other coaches who claim to "have the answer" whenever an injury occurs to a famous athlete. *For a full list of Show Notes w/ Timestamps visit www.IndustrialStrengthShow.com.
