Air Horn makes the loud noise that lets you know where we're at. Check out where we're at by hearing from your fellow mountain bikers. We discuss various topics, tell stories, and generally have a good chat. Air Horn started as weekly VLOGs on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp3h8ZPgFq97plrnTSX1mBQ/ Why "air horn"? If you've watched my mountain biking videos, you know that I bleep out curse words using the airhorn noise. So while I might not be cursing in these vids, this podcast is about the more raw and unedited content.

This one is a long one but please stick around for this enlightening conversation. That Wild Country by Matt Kenyon Sustainable Trails Coalition (STC) I sat down with SoCal local and former racer, Matt Palmer, and we chatted about his journey through mountain biking and into the strange and sometimes dismaying world of our public lands system. In this special Socially Distant Edition of the RAW VLOG, I take staying in as an opportunity to reach out and interview Matt Palmer. We share some stories, have some laughs and discuss the value of our public lands, threats to our access of them, and what we can to do preserve them. We also discuss the role Matt has played in his local and not-so-local trails. It's still raw. It's still unedited. And there is still coffee. The Sedona Mountain Bike Festival is still fresh in my brain, so this episode is about the culture of the festival, the trails around it, my stoke for it. You'll also hear my thoughts on YouTubers being a new segment in the mountain bike community, how real they are, and the fact that there is some hate out there for YouTubers. Some of these thoughts came from hanging out with The Crashing Dad, Paul The Punter, Trail Features, and Daily MTB Rider . I forgot to mention that I got to hang out with Donna Ellsworth . I think I forgot about hanging out with Donna because we didn't really hang out at the festival but instead, hung out on the trail...which is kinna cooler.

In today's RAW VLOG, I speak about sucking at most things and being good at a few things. This is the new role of mediocrity in my mountain biking and in my life in general. I have often been plagued by the crazy-making and sometimes paralyzing need to be excellent at whatever it is I am doing. Recently, I have been working to give myself permission to be "just OK" in some (or most) areas of my life with the goal of reducing stress and conserving energy and concentration on being excellent in more specific areas of my riding and life. Yeah, I'm gonna talk about Santa Cruz's first eMTB, The Heckler. But we're also getting philosophical about the benefits of the "noob brain" (a.k.a. the beginner's mind) and how I go about trying to get into the noob brain. My general thoughts about The Heckler is really less about the bike and more about our response to the fact that Santa Cruz made an eMTB and how so many had the impression that they'd never do it. I also talk about the price being relatively normal for this kind of bike. I find it interesting how we have these internet-fed opinions when the internet can also be the source of revisiting our opinions and maybe adding some information to, I dunno, maybe inform our opinions. CHANNEL NEWS I am now recording RAW VLOGS on Thursday mornings to reduce the level of stress involved in trying to record, render, and publish these things all before getting to work in the morning. The RAW VLOGs will continue to be raw and unedited, and you still get them Friday mornings. The change means two things: 1. that my Friday mornings will be less stressful and 2. we may be able to make these things a little longer. And actually maybe three things...the third thing being that maybe I won't feel the need to talk so fast to fit a bunch of stuff into less than 15 minutes. STOKE OF THE WEEK My hand has shown zero increase in strength for some time and just recently, I started gaining strength. I dunno what the difference has been, but it feels good to be making progress in the strength department. MAIN SUBJECT : Being an Uncool Noob The main thing in the way of knew knowledge is often the knowledge we already have. And the main things in the way of forming new habits are the habits we already have. Being a noob is a good thing to be because it's the place from which we can learn things. The problem is that as we learn things, we become less of a noob. And this is good, but it can also lead to stale and static thought. And emotionally, this can lead to resistance and frustration when facing information, situations, events that don't square with our existing experience, habits, and knowledge...things that just don't make sense or seem ridiculous. My stance is that by retaining some of the "noob brain", we retain the ability to see things in different ways. And we also retain a sense of curiosity about what we experience...especially when those things seem weird, ridiculous, or just don't make sense. I'm sort of drawn to these things...to new and novel things. But that's just me. I'm not suggesting being like me. I only suggest reducing the stress of WTF moments (or spans of your life) by retaining curiosity, slowing down , and keeping it goofy. With any luck, this might helpful or just entertaining for you. I hope you dig it! Storytime about how back in 2007, I got into mountain biking and why I quit shortly thereafter. We start by remembering the first ride I can recall which was a 32 mile night ride with about 3200 feet of climbing and the next morning another 12 miles and 2500 feet of climbing. And this was actually NOT why I quit. I gave up mountain biking because of a bad crash that resulted from being impatient on the wrong bike with a total lack of skill. And with a torn up face and dislocated finger, I limped my way down. I didn't even like looking at the bike after that. And I quit. Fortunately, I was coaxed back into mountain biking by the prospect of getting out into the forest. I'm stoked to be back in mountain biking and more closely connected to our rad community!
