ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
Join me for a live conversation with Professor Wouter J. Hanegraaff on his recent book Esotericism in Western Culture: Counter-Normativity and Rejected Knowledge, published by Bloomsbury in 2025. In this interview, we will explore why esotericism should not be treated as a marginal curiosity, but as a central dimension of Western cultural history. The book is presented by both the publisher and Hanegraaff as a substantially revised, rewritten, and expanded reworking of his earlier 2013 Guide for the Perplexed, now reframed around the ideas of counter-normativity and “rejected knowledge”.Together, we will discuss how dominant accounts of “Western culture” have excluded forms of knowledge associated with magic, Hermetism, paganism, and other heterodox traditions, and why Hanegraaff argues that this exclusion has been deeply tied to Eurocentric and colonial models of civilisation. We will also examine what it means to “reject the rejection of rejected knowledge”, and how this changes the way we understand the history of religion, philosophy, science, and culture in the Greater West. This livestream will be of interest to anyone working on esotericism, the history of ideas, religion, occultism, Hermeticism, or the construction of cultural norms in the academy. It promises to be a rich discussion of one of the field's most influential scholars and a major new intervention in the study of Western esotericism.GET THE BOOK: US https://amzn.to/480nvSe UK https://amzn.to/40JtBTlCONNECT & SUPPORT

Join us live for a conversation with Dr Shira Chess on the hidden entanglements between digital culture and the occult, inspired by her new book The Unseen Internet: Conjuring the Occult in Digital Discourse. From AI “demons” like Loab to meme magic, technopaganism, simulation theory, and the ritual logics of online life, Chess argues that the internet has always been shaped by esoteric frameworks. Drawing on media history and contemporary case studies, she shows how magical thinking is not an accidental metaphor but part of the architecture of digital discourse. In this livestream, we will explore how belief, intention, and symbolic practice intersect with algorithms, platforms, and artificial intelligence, and what this means for politics, reality, and power in the twenty-first century. This livestream brings together Manon Hedenborg White and Henrik Bogdan to discuss their newly co-edited volume The Magical Diaries of Leah Hirsig, 1923 to 1925, published by Oxford University Press. The book presents, for the first time, a critical edition of Hirsig's surviving diaries from the period when she served as Aleister Crowley's Scarlet Woman and played a formative role within the development of Thelema. These documents reveal a complex portrait of Hirsig as practitioner, partner, and independent thinker while also illuminating the daily workings of Crowley's magical system during a turbulent chapter of his life. You can buy the book here ➡️ https://amzn.to/48AL03NThe conversation will explore the challenges of editing primary sources in esotericism, the significance of Hirsig's voice within a field long dominated by male figures, and the broader implications of her magical, emotional, and intellectual labour for understanding early twentieth-century occultism. We will examine how the diaries complicate established narratives around gender, authority, and the lived experience of Thelemic practice. The discussion will also consider the historiographical value of such material within contemporary scholarship on Western esotericism.Join us on Sunday, 7 December at 5 pm GMT or 12 pm EST for an in-depth conversation that opens new perspectives on a pivotal yet understudied figure in the history of modern magic.CONNECT & SUPPORT

ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
In this live interview, I am joined by Dr Christina Oakley Harrington—medieval historian, long-standing practitioner of witchcraft, and founder of the renowned Treadwell's Bookshop in London—for a conversation that traces the intersections of scholarship, community, and contemporary esotericism. We explore the historical development of modern witchcraft, with particular attention to the inclusive dimensions of early Wiccan covens such as the New Forest group. Drawing from Christina's research, the discussion addresses the presence of LGBTQ individuals in the early history of the Craft, challenging homogenised narratives and highlighting the movement's radical potential from its inception. Our dialogue also reflects on the transformation of esoteric communities in London over recent decades. Christina discusses the decline of public gatherings such as the Pub Moots of the 1980s and 1990s, and considers the evolving role of the esoteric bookshop as a site of both knowledge transmission and community formation in the contemporary landscape. The conversation further addresses her personal journey from academic research in medieval studies to the establishment of Treadwell's, offering insights into the ways historical scholarship and spiritual practice can mutually enrich one another. We also touch on her written contributions, including Dreams of Witches and The Treadwell's Book of Plant Magic, which exemplify her ability to synthesise rigorous historical insight with accessible spiritual praxis.ABOUT OUR GUESTChristina Oakley Harrington is an independent scholar of religion who works on twentieth century pagan witchcraft and the history of European herbal magic Trained as a medieval historian (PhD UCL), she was a Lecturer in History for twelve years on the faculty of St Mary's University (Surrey). She is author of Women in a Celtic Church: Ireland 450-1150 (Oxford University Press) and Dreams of Witches (Black Letter Press) as well as articles both scholarly and journalistic. She co-edited Abraxas: International Journal of Esoteric Studies 2010-2015. Her popular work Treadwell's Book of Plant Magic, aimed at a general audience, has sold over 10,000 copies in the five years since its publication. Since 2003 she has run Treadwell's Bookshop in London, a crossroads between researchers and practitioners of Western esoteric traditions. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
This interview offers an insightful discussion with anthropologist Tanya Luhrmann, whose pioneering scholarship has significantly advanced our comprehension of magic, esotericism, and witchcraft. In this academic interview, we critically examine Luhrmann's influential notion of "interpretive drift"—the incremental cognitive process by which individuals progressively adopt and internalise magical beliefs and practices. We engage with her seminal ethnographic research on contemporary magical and esoteric communities, investigating how practitioners utilise rituals, visualisation techniques, and imaginative practices to foster potent experiential encounters. Luhrmann elucidates the psychological and sociocultural mechanisms that underpin and sustain belief in magic and witchcraft, illuminating how rational actors negotiate and integrate esoteric practices within their quotidian existence.Employing ethnographic case studies and rigorous theoretical analyses, we explore the broader implications of Luhrmann's findings for understanding the endurance and attractiveness of magical thought within contemporary secularised societies. Scholars, practitioners, and those intrigued by the enduring relevance of magical belief will find this discussion academically stimulating, providing nuanced insights into humanity's enduring inclination to engage with the transcendent and extraordinary.Get Prof Luhrmann's bookshttps://amzn.to/4lDeYKjhttps://amzn.to/42zNVqAhttps://amzn.to/4jISm9vhttps://amzn.to/3Gfz11fABOUT OUR GUESTanya Luhrmann is a professor of anthropology at Stanford University, specialising in the study of spiritual experiences and their relation to religious practices. She links their experiences to a variety of practices like prayer, ritual, storytelling and the cultivation of the inner senses. She was named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003, received a John Guggenheim Fellowship award in 2007, and was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2022. In this episode, we'll cover how magic operates—not as an omnipotent force but rather as a subtle method for shifting probabilities and influencing outcomes. We'll discuss key magical principles, including the Path of Least Resistance, which highlights why aligning magical intentions with existing socio-political conditions enhances effectiveness, and the Principle of Proportional Energy, the need for energetic input to match the magnitude of desired outcomes. We'll also explore practical strategies for magical rituals aimed at protecting nations from conflict, influencing political decisions ethically, fostering peace, and establishing harmonious alliances. Moreover, we'll consider the essential concept of counter-magic, acknowledging and navigating opposing magical forces that can emerge in politically charged environments.Drawing on historical, anthropological, and fieldwork insights, this episode will offer practical guidelines for collective magical workings, including stepwise goal-setting and proportional energy use to maximise effectiveness.Whether you're a practitioner, scholar, or simply curious, join me LIVE or later on demand to unpack the complex intersection of magic, politics, and conflict resolution.CONNECT & SUPPORT
