On this episode of Transform, the Samis are taking you inside their very first annual FORM founders' trip to Sedona. From meditations and massages to the magic of Sedona's vortexes, they're sharing all the highlights — including the moment Sami Spalter revealed her pregnancy news to Sami Clarke. This wasn't just a getaway though — it was intentional time to reflect as best friends and co-founders, looking at what's working, what's not, and how they can continue to create impact for the FORM community. The Samis break down the powerful questions they asked themselves on this trip — ones you can bring to your own life or team — around big dreams, milestones, and what truly brings you joy. Plus, they're giving a first look at a new FORM product that has been a tool to transform their own lives (and is designed to help yours). (00:00) Weather and Golf Post Ryder Cup This chapter brings us to the picturesque Pine Canyon in Flagstaff, Arizona, where we share a mix of personal experiences and reflections on recent golf events. We recount the unexpected hailstorms and flooding in Arizona, painting a vivid picture of the unusual weather conditions that recently swept through the region. Amidst this backdrop, I took the opportunity to savor a quiet day on the golf course, capturing videos and appreciating the scenic beauty before the onset of winter. We then shift our focus to the Ryder Cup, highlighting the challenges faced by even the world's best golfers in alternate shot formats. The discussion emphasizes the psychological pressures of playing not just for oneself, but also for a partner and country. We explore how the European team's familiarity with match play contributed to their superior preparation and performance, leading to a decisive advantage in the initial rounds against the U.S. team. (12:08) Ryder Cup Crowd Behavior Discussion This chapter takes us through a candid conversation about golf, regional attitudes, and sportsmanship. Jeff Smith joins from Flagstaff, Arizona, as we discuss the challenge of playing at Bethpage Black, one of the toughest courses. We reminisce about Michael Michaelides, who worked there and his New York grit. The discussion turns to the notorious behavior of some New York fans during the Ryder Cup, reflecting on the negative stereotypes of the "ugly American" and sharing personal anecdotes from living in New York. We explore the tension between being a sports fan and maintaining respect, especially when witnessing the unprecedented face-off between the world's top two golfers. As someone who spent my teenage years in New York City, I share insights into the sometimes brusque nature of New Yorkers, illustrating the contrast with an amusing story about our move from Boston. (16:34) Golf Techniques This chapter offers a delightful blend of sports commentary and musical nostalgia. We share our appreciation for the professionalism of broadcasters Terry Gannon and Dan Hicks, while also distinguishing Dan Hicks from the country singer of the same name, known for his hit "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away." Our discussion then transitions to the golf world, focusing on Brad Faxon's insightful commentary and the notable absence of Keegan Bradley from a major tournament despite being the 13th ranked player globally. We speculate on the challenges and pressures that might have influenced his decision not to play, and reflect on the relentless nature of armchair critics. Additionally, we ponder the minute differences in skill and precision that can determine success in golf, particularly during high-stakes competitions like the Ryder Cup. (32:07) Sound Analysis and Sporting Events This chapter explores the nuances of sound in golf, particularly how experienced caddies like Jim "Bones" McKay can discern the difference between an average and a perfect strike, as demonstrated through the example of PGA Tour winner Tyler Duncan. We also touch on travel experiences, discussing scenic and not-so-scenic routes across the United States, from the engaging landscapes of Sedona to the tedious drive from Phoenix to Palm Springs. Additionally, we reflect on the recent disappointment at the Ryder Cup, despite high expectations, and share plans for an upcoming road trip across the country. Alongside these discussions, there is an exciting mention of attending a concert, with a hint of humor regarding who the performers might be. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In this episode of VISITORS, Kelly sits down with Juergen Hess—aka Hoodoo Tall—fresh off earning his Ph.D. in Metaphysical Sciences, a milestone that formalizes years of disciplined fieldwork around Sedona and the Bradshaw Ranch. Known for blurring the lines between researcher, experiencer, and storyteller, Juergen shares wisdom shaped by a long friendship and mentorship with the late John Lear, as well as first-hand time “working with” Lear on investigations. He also opens a window into his friendship with author Lou Baldin, a singular (and sometimes polarizing) voice whose ideas are resurfacing—and that some in the UFO community, including Richard Dolan, have been highlighting as worth a closer look. What makes Hoodoo stand out isn't just the footage or the archives—it's the way he leads with empathy and kindness, modeling how to ask brave questions without dehumanizing the people behind the stories. That's why Sam and Kelly have been proud to share Hoodoo's work with their girls: as a living example of pursuing your passions with courage, integrity, and curiosity. And if the stars align, we hope to experience Hoodoo's work in person on our next trip to Sedona—right where so much of this high-strangeness begins. If you're new to Hoodoo Tall, this conversation is an ideal entry point; if you've followed him for years, you'll hear fresh context—from Lear's influence to Baldin's thought experiments—framed by a researcher who never forgets that people come first. And we, deep down, know what those things are, but sometimes we still cling to those things that we are not, right, because it feels comfortable.Lesley Logan 0:20  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:59  All right, Be It babe. I'm so obsessed. I'm so obsessed with today's guest. Like, there's times I'm like, oh, I love all these people. And then there's times I'm like, okay, this guest, I want to be friends with. I want to have coffee with. I want to have a weekly date with. When I enter her, I'd say, like, she is like, this beam of light. And I'm telling you, she's a beam of light, and she really, really, really creates this amazing space for you to step up into the woman that you are wanting to be it till you see it. So Wendy Valentine's, our guest, super, super fun. She's the host of the Midlife Makeover Show, and I was on her show. So if you want to go check out that show to get to know her more. And you know, that's a good episode to start with, because obviously you trust me, so there's that. And then you can, like, go through all of her catalog. She's just so amazing. So I'm gonna let us get into this episode so you can get all the good stuff coming from Wendy Valentine. Lesley Logan 1:45  All right, Be It babe, today's guest and I are already having too much fun. She's only in Sedona right now, so she's not too far off, but I feel like we should be hanging out in real life. Wendy Valentine, you're just, tell everyone why you're just such the magical like beam of light that we all want to be around and be your best friend.Wendy Valentine 2:16  How much time do we have?Lesley Logan 2:21  I mean at least 30 minutes of you telling us why you're so amazing.Wendy Valentine 2:27  There is one word that I hear all the time. It's a word that's used to describe me the most. No, it's not crazy. I do get that sometimes, but it's energy, energy, energy, energy. And I was thinking about this this morning, because, as we know, like, energy cannot be created or destroyed. Yeah, it's only transformed into something else, right? You had an ice cube on the pan back there in the RV, and then it melts into water, and then eventually it goes into steam. And I think that's like, I feel like, for myself right now in my life, like I am becoming that steam and moving into the universe. That sounds all so voodoo, but it's like that constant evolving, which I think is so magnificent, and just moving into the energy of it all.Lesley Logan 3:18  Yeah, I think that's so cool. So how did you become someone who is, like, known for energy? Like, how did this like, have like, were you born this way? Was this your job when you were in your 20s? Did this just happen?Wendy Valentine 3:30  Well, you know, I mean, good question. I mean, as you know, we're all energy, but I think it's when I really started to own, to own it, to own who I am and to create who I wanted to be, not to family and friends and society and all that other crap wanted me to be. It's when I finally stepped into my true self and my true calling. And I think you know what? Like that whole like, be your authentic self, be your true self, that's all like being thrown around a lot these days. We're like, what does that mean? What does it mean, really?Lesley Logan 4:04  I know, but tell me how, but tell me how. Because I was born like I was raised in like, follow these instructions. Do this work. If you do all these things, then everything works out, which is bullshit and so and then people go and then be your authentic self. And I'm like, okay, but how? Because I don't think I've ever been, I was never taught to be authentic. I was taught to follow the rules. Wendy Valentine 4:23  Yeah, you know what though? It's more about it's not learning who you are to become. It's learning who you are not. And I love the analogy of Michelangelo and the beautiful statue of David. Let's all picture him for a moment. Oh yes. But when they when they asked Michelangelo, how did you carve the statue of David? He's like, oh, that was easy. I just carved away everything that was not him. So if you think about it, you should always have that chisel in your hand in the nicest of ways, but constantly and consciously be chiseling away the things that are not you. And we, deep down, know what those things are, but sometimes we still cling to those things that we are not, right, because it feels comfortable. Even though it's uncomfortable, it's comfortable, it's like, but this is who I am. This is my identity, yeah.Lesley Logan 5:14  Well, and I think, like, I think a lot of people, you said it's my identity, it's their identity, to be always going through drama, to be always like, to always have a shit day at work. Like, can you believe it? Can you believe this happened? Like those, it's that's some people's identity. And, like, I get so annoyed with myself when I, like, hear myself repeating the same negative, bad thing that happened, and I'm like, is this becoming something that has, like, a growth on my shoulder, or like, like, is this becoming part of the of like, of the not the costume, but like, what is Lesley? Because it's like, I don't want to hear this anymore, so I definitely don't want to stick around. So I love the idea of a, I go a visual, physical chisel going no, no, no.Wendy Valentine 5:58  Part of you know that is not you. There's that quote from Marianne Williamson, it is my fave, and it's got me through the toughest of times, or gotten me to where I'm at now. And she says, our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us, because you think about it, if you were to step fully into your light, what does that mean? Like what does that look like? Right? Because that would require, possibly, just like myself, it would require maybe a divorce, maybe quitting a job you hate, maybe moving, maybe buying an RV like I did. Maybe, I mean, it's going to require you to actually move and do some shit in your life if you truly stepped into your light, but, or you could just stay right there in the dark because it's more comfortable, because it's predictable. The darkness is predictable, the the uncomfortable comfort zone is predictable, predictable, right? Yeah.Lesley Logan 7:03  Yeah, I mean, I don't know who said it, but, like, there is, like, that story of, like, why does a dog, like, not move off of sitting on that rock? It's like, well, the rock isn't uncomfortable enough, you know, and so a lot of people wait to, wait so long, and so they're so uncomfortable, and then they shed it all, and then they step into this light. And that, it can be scary. Like we interviewed Gay Hendricks on this podcast, and he is the, I know, I fucking love him, he's such a sweet man. He's just, he, like, every time I go to Cambodia, he's like, did you get some milk fruit? Like, he's just, he's like, it's the best fruit. And he is right. It is the best fruit. And it's only available half of the time, so I'm never there, but I got to have it. But at any rate, he talks about your big leap is, like, because, like, when you are in your comfort zone, you can even, like, he even called like, your your like, zone of genius, and you're like, okay, well, that's a good spot to be in. Like, that's like, amazing, but it's or zone of excellence, excuse me. Like, of course I would like to be there. Like, that sounds really good, but like, that's actually still uncomfortable, but like it's comfortable, like it's actually not where your light is, that you're talking about, it's like, it's like, there's another layer, there's an outer ring, there's that ring of light around Saturn, and you're supposed to be there. Wendy Valentine 7:03  That's just like, dipping your toe in the water. Lesley Logan 7:13  Yeah, but then he and he talks about, like, how, well, when you get to that zone of genius, when you get to that outer ring, you get to your light, then there's, like, a few things that we do to just fuck it all up and bring us back to that comfortable discomfort, you know, like that self-deprivation.Lesley Logan 7:13  And a comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.Lesley Logan 8:38  Oh, Wendy Valentine, say it one more time.Wendy Valentine 8:44  Soak it up. Soak it up. A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there. So if you want to grow, I know y'all do, you have got to get out of that damn comfort zone. You know, I want to say though, I was on the treadmill this morning, and I was thinking. Lesley Logan 8:58  Do you have a treadmill in your RV or do you go the gym? Wendy Valentine 9:04  No, I'm actually at this nice resort. I mean, RVing has come a long way, y'all, thank God.Lesley Logan 9:09  I mean, we live in our van like it's it's not so bad. Sometimes it's better than the hotel.Wendy Valentine 9:12  We got, we got hot tubs, we got swimming pools, we got food trucks. I mean, we don't mess around over here. But yeah, I was at the gym this morning and I was walking on the treadmill, and I was thinking, I love the name I have since the moment when I met you and I heard about your podcast. I love the name of your podcast. Be It Till You See It. And I got choked, people were probably like, why is that lady over there balling on the treadmill? And you know, right now, I'm reaping the benefits of what I sowed years ago and getting outside of my damn comfort zone. But you know, what's so cool? I might cry right now. I did not put on waterproof mascara, but I am seeing it in my life, all those seeds I planted years ago, and that amount of time. I watered and watered those damn seeds. It's like, I'm seeing it. It's like, it's so freaking cool when you get to that other side, and yes, you will, is so it is beautiful. It's much more beautiful. And, and yes, you will grow when you get to the other side of it. If you want, I can take y'all back to my breakdown to breakthrough. Lesley Logan 10:22  I was just gonna say, I think we need to go back to the seed planting days, or at least, like, the days before the RV, the day before the book, the days before the podcast. Like, what, what? Like, who were you? How did because we love you now. But like, we loved you then. But like, what? What was the reason for all what was the reason for all this, you know, seed reaping? Wendy Valentine 10:43  And we all love a good breakdown and a breakthrough story. Lesley Logan 10:46  Yeah, we do. Wendy Valentine 10:47  But make sure everyone grab your violin, (inaudible) sad song right now. So let's see. For about 45 years old, here I was. I was living in Virginia, going through a divorce, empty nest. I had chronic illness, black mold toxicity, Lyme disease. We'll toss in a little menopause, just, for fun.Lesley Logan 11:10  Yeah. I mean, for sure, probably, yeah.Wendy Valentine 11:13  Yeah, yeah. I was at least 150 grand in debt, unemployed. Let's see what else. Oh, within a six week period, I had to watch my dog die, my cat die, and my brother die. And then from all of that, I started experiencing panic attacks, anxiety, and needless to say, I went into a massive, deep, dark, awful depression. So here I was, 45 years old, and I was like, shit, now what? And, I mean, I kept thinking, I was like, I only turned 50. That's like, like, that, that halfway mark, if you're that lucky that it's an halfway mark, right? And I don't know if anything could have gotten worse for me in that moment. And let's, let's just all imagine the scene. I literally was laying on my bathroom floor, like laying there, bawling my eyes out, feeling sorry for myself, I'll admit, and I was thinking, What the hell am I going to do? And all of a sudden, like, and it was part of me like this, this vision popped in my head, and it was, it was a little bit of an escape, I'll admit, but it was a beautiful escape. And I was like, wouldn't be nice to just get the fuck out of here? You know, like, I just want to escape my my life that I was in. And I was like, I want to drive an RV across the country. And then I'm like, man. And then, of course, that nagging voice in my head was like, yeah, you're broke, you don't have a job. How that? How are you going to do that? And but then I was like, you know, I just want to sit here and think about this dream. It was the only thing that gave me hope. And so I thought, you know what? What the hell like my life. I was already down here. The only way was going up, right? I was like, let's just go for it. What's the worst that could happen? I'm gonna fucking go for it. So I got up and I started applying for jobs all the way across the country, like I was, I was so desperate. I was like, I'll take anything. Okay, I'll sell popsicles in Mexico. I don't care, whatever. So then I get a job offer a week later, selling, you'll probably, you're probably familiar with his name, Pulte, Pulte Del Webb, I got a job offer with Pulte to sell new construction homes in Chicago. And I was like, Chicago. Never been there. I didn't know how to sell homes, but what the hell. I pack off the U-Haul. I drive from Virginia to Chicago. I start my job on Monday. About a year later, I went from making $0 to a half a million dollars. Obviously, paid off all my debt, bought this RV that I'm sitting in right now. Now, mind you, okay, I love Pulte, and it was a great, beautiful company. But I am not a corporate girl. I am not. Like, that's a chisel where I was like, girl listen here, you're not you, you know. And I will have to say, that's a lesson in itself, right there. Don't be afraid to try something. That does not mean if you try something, you can't pivot, okay?Lesley Logan 14:33  Right and also, like, can I just, like, say, like, I mean, clearly, Pulte was, like, quite the bridge to show you what you're capable of, and it get was a one, the fact that in one year, you can make that much money, going from zero to that much money, and not become someone who doesn't like, take your dreams the next level. You actually like, used it to launch yourself. I think it's like, I think it's so cool. Wendy Valentine 14:57  Yes and how easy would it have been for me to stay there. Lesley Logan 15:00  Oh, yeah and so. Wendy Valentine 15:01  Everyone was like, why are you gonna leave this job that you're you're killing it, killing it. I was like, yeah, but this is not for me. The chisel.Lesley Logan 15:09  Well and also, yeah, the chisel, I love that. And also, like, we had a lot of people that are like, I want to do this thing. I'm just gonna go all in. And I'm like, honey, if you can't pay for your bills, you can't pay your food, you are going to put pressure on this dream you have. Go get a job at Starbucks, make sure your bills are paid, have health insurance, all the things, and then use every other minute to make this thing happen. So I actually think it's really cool that not only you did it in a year, but that you, at a year, were able to, like, evaluate and go, I gotta chisel this off, because this isn't me, and not listen to the family who's like, you should just stay and make all that money. Wendy Valentine 15:46  Yes and remind yourself, if you are in a job you don't love, you're you're in a relationship you don't love, you're living in a place you don't love, remind yourself this is temporary. Everything is temporary, right? I mean, all in all, everything is temporary. Just remind yourself like this is just for now. This is just for now. Like, every day when I'd be, like, driving in the snow in Chicago, heading to this job to, like, talk about granite countertops. I was like, It's okay. I can do this. I cant do this. But then, yeah, I was like, all right, well, what am I going to do? I don't want to work for corporate. I and I was like, you know, I've always, I want to be a writer. I always knew I would become a writer. I was like, I want to be a writer. How am I? How am I going to become a writer? And I always wanted to have my own show. So I was like, how am I going to do this? And I had to be able to work remotely. Obviously, because traveling in an RV, I had to be able to work remotely, right? So I was listening to Cathy Heller's podcast and she was interviewing Stephanie Gass. And something, you know, it's like, if you get that funny feeling in your tummy, that gut instinct of like, I need to move on this. I don't know what it is, just do not question it. Just go for it. I hired Stephanie Gass, and within 30 minutes, I knew exactly what my niche was going to be and what my podcast was going to be called. And I was like, that's it. I had I had it. I was like, I'm going to talk about midlife. I'm going to talk about not even just midlife, but transforming your life. Because I did it, like, I was the guinea pig, right? I'm like, I did, I know how to do it. So I kept my day job, and then at night, I started working on my dream business. I started working on the website and then the photography and the the podcast, all, all the stuff, you know, right? Started doing my research and just little by little, and then eventually, the RV, finally, I ordered it like eight months before, finally arrived and it was go time to quit my job and take off into the Sedona sunset.Lesley Logan 17:51  Okay but also, like, I think it's so, I wanted to say, like, I think sometimes we, like, underestimate what we can do in a short period of time, because you just celebrated 50. Am I correct?Wendy Valentine 18:01  Yeah, yeah. So it took me, well, actually, I'm 52. It took me from the moment, like when I moved to Chicago, to taking off in the RV, it took me approximately two and a half years, and then I've been on the road for three so, yes, it takes time. And is it easy? Hell no. Is it worth it? Hell yes.Lesley Logan 18:23  Yeah, yeah. I mean, like, there's, you know, like, I think things happen faster than we think, and some things are a little slower than we expected. Like, the time, we never get the timeline exactly right. But also, like, it would have been so like, could you imagine on the bathroom floor being like, well, it's gonna take a long time. I don't know. Like, I bet, you know what I mean, I think we just take, we talk ourselves out of things so and we also think, well, I'm at this age. I should be already. Like, I should be doing this program. I should have this already. I mean, like, I kind of think it's really cool that you were the guinea pig and you can actually, like, guide so many women who, for sure, are, I said, someone on the podcast, she's like, I'm a bird launcher. I'm not an empty nester. Like, I want I like, I launched some birds. And she's, you know, but you can take the.Wendy Valentine 18:24  That's what I did. I was like, shoo, shoo. Get out. Lesley Logan 19:05  Yeah, get out of the nest. It's mine now. But like, I think that there's a ton of people who work, not given the opportunity or encouraged when they were moms and wives and partners to be selfish and do their thing like I do believe that there's a ton of women who did and so, so if you're listening, yay for you, but I think a lot of people were not, and they had to wait, and then they waited, and then they're like, well, I don't even know who I am, and everyone says to be authentic. And so I feel like you asked to be you to help people so you're right and then you have this amazing podcast, which, I got to be honest, is amazing. And it's like, but it's mid it's called Midlife Makeover. Correct? Wendy Valentine 19:51  Yep, The Midlife Makeover Show.Lesley Logan 19:53  Yes. Okay, so let's talk about like, do you feel like you do what you do? Do you feel like you'll ever run out of topics to talk about when it comes to midlife? Like, what are you and then, and then also turn it into a book. So let's go into, like, how you've, like, really made this whole thing happen.Wendy Valentine 20:10  You know, what I love about my niche is that there's so much going on in midlife. I mean, like, if I had to talk about one topic every day, oh, my God, I could not stand it. I mean, yesterday I interviewed a lady where, like, it was about grief. She lost her daughter. Daughter was 17 years old when she died. The day before, I got to talk about hormones and menopause, and then the day before that, I got to talk about divorce, like there's so, because there is so much going on. And I love, I love being the catalyst to help other people make their dreams come true. I love that I can provide that hope, whether it's with me or with a guest, or whether it's just simply, I mean, right, the best way we can teach others is by example. Like I don't, I don't fluff anything like you, what you see is what you get. Like, I didn't just say I did it or say that I'm gonna do it. Like, here you go, you know. And you know, I, what was I going to tell you? Oh, I did create the acronym for you. I have four little lessons to teach you today.Lesley Logan 21:16  Do you want to teach us now or do you want to put in the Be It Action Items?Wendy Valentine 21:20  I'm gonna teach it to you really quick. Lesley Logan 21:21  Okay, let's do it. Wendy Valentine 21:22  It's, it's the Be It, right? And this is what I just told you, that story, these are four little guide posts that you can follow so that you, too, can actually, no matter if it's a little tweak in your life or a big tweak, a big change, you can make it happen. So the B in Be It is become your own BFF like you have got to be so nice to yourself, and you have got to listen to that ticker tape of thoughts running across in your mind. And you've got to stop that ticker tape of thoughts and replace it with some really good, friendly thoughts. Because this right here, I'm pointing to my head with my large head of hair, this will either be your best friend or your worst critic, and you are the one that decides, not Instagram, not your mom, not your dad, not your partner, not your kids, it's you like that is the one thing that you have, not one, but one of the many things you have control over. And actually starting there, it's a ripple effect of everything else in your life. If you can get that under control, and yes, you can, you change your thoughts, you change your beliefs. We've all heard it before, but do we really apply it and really try it? So, yes, become your own BFF, just love the shit out of yourself. The E is envision. You've got to envision who you want to become, not the what it's great to, to, like, dream about things and RVs and (inaudible) right, but who do you want to become? Journal about it. Think about it. Take a walk and just imagine the woman that you would want to become and without limitation, right? The I is invite her in. You have got to literally, every single day, and this is exactly what I did, because my Aunt Annie said to me, when I was like in the down, down in the dumps, in depression, and I'm sitting on the couch when she goes, darling, you have always wanted to be an actress, so why don't you just start acting like the woman you want to become? And I was like, oh, I can do that. And I thought about that, right? Like we're all we're all brainwashed. We're all brainwashed into whoever we are, but we can brainwash ourselves into becoming whoever the hell we want to be. Lesley Logan 23:39  Yes, yes. Wendy Valentine 23:41  Yep. So I did. I was like, you know what? How, like you, imagine a drone flying over your head and observing you all day long. How is this woman, this powerful, amazing, gorgeous woman? How does she walk? How does she walk into a room? How does she talk? How does she eat? How does she sleep? How does she, what did she do when she first gets out of bed? Like, is she like, oh my god, I think I'm so grateful I'm alive. Thank you. Thank you. Observe her like and and be her like, literally when you put your shoes on, you put your slippers on or whatever, imagine that those are her shoes and that, and literally act like her, even if someone else is like, why she acting so funny? Just keep doing it.Wendy Valentine 24:26  Yeah, no. I mean, let them, let them wonder why you're acting so funny. Wendy Valentine 24:27  Yes, yes, exactly. Lesley Logan 24:28  They'll just wonder. They get to wonder. And if you want to go talk about it to people like, I thank God for my time in L.A., where I learned, like, all publicity is good. Like, there's no such thing as bad, you know. Let them talk on how weird you are.Wendy Valentine 24:45  (inaudible) Yeah. Finally, T is take action. I think you even say that in your intro about taking action, right? You have to, like, how do you get courage? By taking action. Like if you, if you had a jar, an empty jar, and I have an empty jar, how do you fill up your jar of courage? And how do I fill up mine? We each have to do that on our own. I cannot hand courage. It would be great, right? If like, here, here you go, Lesley, let me give you some courage. You have to do that your own. And you do that by taking action, even if you fall on your face, even if you fall on your face. I didn't know how to even drive an RV. I was like, oh my god. So you figure shit out, right? Like, leap of the net will appear. Like, leap you will figure this stuff out. And that's how you become so resilient and strong. And then it's the tiniest of things I don't know about you, it's like the tiniest of little accomplishments. You're like, that's right. I did that. Like, that's right. I just actually figured out how to dump the dumper on the survey (inaudible) things. I'm like, I did that. (inaudible) So don't forget to celebrate yourself.Lesley Logan 25:53  I believe, all of a sudden, I think like, that is where confidence comes in. Like, people think like confidence comes like, you have to wait for you, once you're confident, then you can do the thing. It's like, no, actually, you get confident by doing the thing. Like, I remember we bought our van, which is not even as big as an RV, we don't need a special license for it. It actually fits in parking spaces. I mean, it's the it's the longest and the tallest of the vehicles that you don't need another license for. And the first time we took it on we took we drove it. I had no problems driving out of the gas station. I had no problems. Like, once we were like, pointing the right direction, like, I'm like, I got this. But one time we were needing to go, and Brad was asleep, and I'm like, I have to hit reverse. There's no rear view mirror. Like, I gotta do this with this tall vehicle. I'm super long. I got a white like, I and it has a camera. It's like, just follow the camera. I'm like, I can't even it's like, this big, just the camera? What, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I hope it beeps. If someone's wrong, I like, what if there's a pole, you know, like one of the, so I like, literally, get out of the car, got out of the car and I do a walk around. I'm like, okay, there's no poles. So the worst thing that happens is that someone or something drives behind me while I'm doing this, and it's supposed to beep, and I'm gonna trust that, and now I come back anytime I want, like, but you I had to, I could not, Brad's telling me you can do this. Like you used to drive jeeps, like, you know what you're doing. Like, he's like, you can none of that confidence and courage being told at me helped me get the confidence, like actually reversing the car and doing it myself.Wendy Valentine 27:32  And sometimes it's the tiniest of things that just gives you a little boost. It's a little reminder that, yes, you can do this and keep going and keep going. Yeah, yeah.Lesley Logan 27:41  Okay, you published a book. Now, can we talk about it? I mean, it says, Women Waking Up: The Midlife Manifesto for Passion, Purpose, and Play. Women waking up. Also, I love the colors. It's like every beautiful shade of pink lipstick, like, yes, yes, yes.Wendy Valentine 28:00  I know, isn't she? It's my little baby. This is actually, like, this is the advanced copy. So it's not even a real copy. But yes, I know. It just went into preorder this week. Lesley Logan 28:10  When is it publishing for reals? Wendy Valentine 28:12  Um, it publishes, it comes out on 9-9. Lesley Logan 28:15  Okay. Wendy Valentine 28:16  9-9 is the time, but and you know what? Before I got into writing books and things like that, I didn't know, I was like, why is everyone why don't they do the preorder? Why? Because I don't get the book. I'll give you $500 worth of reasons (inaudible). Literally, right now, pre-order the book. Because here's the thing, you could if you wanted to, you can literally start making changes today, just with the bonuses that you get with the book. Let me tell you what the bonuses are. Lesley Logan 28:44  Tell us, tell us because this is going to come out before 9-9 so you all can take advantage of this. Wendy Valentine 28:48  Oh yeah. You get the Women Waking Up Playbook. It's like 100 plus pages. You can download them. They are cute, colorful and cute and wonderful. You get the Freedom At Midlife Meditations that go along with the book, just to elevate your mind and help you become your own best friend, right? You get the Map At Your Midlife Dream Workshop, your customizable digital vision board. Thank you very much. I love that thing. Love it. I love it. Love it. What else? A $200 voucher to my Freedom At Midlife Program, and my fave, the Women Waking Up Spotify playlist. Yeah, so that's it. You literally get all of that. Lesley Logan 29:30  Before I even read the book. I can change my life before. And then when I read it, I mean, like, reminding me all these amazing other things. Wendy Valentine 29:37  Yeah, I know. And by the time the book arrives, then you'll get to read the rest of the story and then be like, Yeah, I already did that. Check, check, check. Lesley Logan 29:44  Yeah. So you're just putting all these little drops of confidence into your bucket as you read it, and then you get more, oh, I love this. Wendy, we need more time with you. I need, we need to hang out. I'm not, I'm not kidding. Like, is your RV heading my way before it's too hot? Like, I would just like to know.Wendy Valentine 30:01  You know what? I was gonna go to Nevada, because I'm starting this book tour now, but now I'm going up towards Denver. (inaudible) Maybe when I come back.Lesley Logan 30:07  On the way back, on your way back, you can do it. There's a great book shop called Writer's Block. There's some really cute bookstores in Vegas that are, like, great for doing some sort of tour of some kind, I agree, yes. Or you can go to one of my friends' amazing shops, and they'll, they'll host you. So just let me know, because I'll help make it happen. Because there's women here who need you. Oh, my God, we have to take a brief break, and then we'll get all your links and how we can, like, totally like, stalk you and like, the kids call you, stan you, you know, like stalker fan in one, one moment. Lesley Logan 30:34  All right, Wendy Valentine, favorite place to hang out on the internet, where's the links to pre-order the book, like, where, where's give us everything.Wendy Valentine 30:53  Do all the things. Okay. Instagram, it's got to be my fav. And I do share some cool, fun stuff, right? Lesley Logan 30:57  You do. I love watching your life. You carry a dog with in a bag. Wendy Valentine 30:58  I have some valuable content, with fun stuff too. So yes, Wendy Valentine on Instagram, and probably the best hub is wendyvalentine.com and from there, I know a lot of people have freebies, but my freebies really are awesome. Lesley Logan 31:16  Yeah there's 100 page freebie. I'm just gonna tell you right now, you, above and beyond, lady. Wendy Valentine 31:22  Yeah, yeah. So click, there's a freebies tab. You can even take a superhero quiz on there. That's my fav. There's a book tab on there that is where you can get all of your bonuses when you pre-order the book. And the book is everywhere, Women Waking Up, it's Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Target. It's everywhere. And what else? Yeah, that's, that's it. And then, The Midlife Makeover Show, that's everywhere, where you listen to podcasts, even on YouTube, you can even watch the, you know, the playback of of me interviewing people in an RV.Lesley Logan 31:52  Yeah, yeah. You can listen. You can also watch the Be It Pod, you guys, we're on YouTube as well. You know, it's, I know, it's this fun thing. You do this thing for audio, and then people want the visual. So you we gotta do it all. Wendy Valentine 32:01  Give them the visual. Give them the visual. Lesley Logan 32:01  Okay, I love your acronym. So if you want that to be your Be It Action Item, we can replay that, that is totally fine. But if there's anything else we have to give these women that helps them ditch perfection, take that messy action, what bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted steps should they take, what else?Wendy Valentine 32:23  I would have to say, this is, I'm adopting this from Deepak Chopra, because I used to go to a lot of his retreats. And there was one thing he said to me, it's in his cute little accent, and he goes, you have to feel your way through life. I was like, what does that mean? I was like, feel my way through life, and we're so used to thinking everything through and probably overthinking, right? But ask yourself, no matter what it is that you're doing or thinking about doing, how does it feel to you? And most importantly, how does it feel to this new person, this new woman that you are creating in your life. How will it feel? Does that align with her? Does she like that? Does she not like it? And just enjoy. I mean, this, you get this tiny little we're like little blip of time on eternity in eternity, right? Like, just live it up in this little space and print in these parentheses. Just live it up and enjoy and stop overthinking. Just feel your way through life. Lesley Logan 33:25  I love that. And I actually really love him. He, I listened to him, remember, Oprah would actually release like, interviews on her like, podcast channel? And I listened to him talk about this time when he would go be a monk, right? Like his like, you know, go for like, I don't know, 30 days or something like that. And he the monk, his like, monk guide, was like, Oh, how was it walking through the jungle? And he's like, well, it hurt my feet. You know, it hurt my feet. And he and the guy goes, oh, well, when your foot is not on the ground, does it hurt? And he goes, No, I don't think so. He's like, well, then think about the other foot, right? Anyways, my husband is gonna love it. I have remembered that. Out of everything he said, I have remembered that so much because whenever my husband's like, oh, my knee hurts, I'm like, maybe you should think about your other knee. And I'm sure he's like.Wendy Valentine 33:26  Yeah or yeah, my arm hurts when I move it, like this, well stop moving it. Lesley Logan 33:35  What is your other arm, like, he like, heard something and I like, hit the other arm, and he's like, what are you do doing? I'm like, distracting you. It's from Dee it's from Deepak, fill the other one.Wendy Valentine 34:29  Refocusing, refocusing. You know? Lesley Logan 34:31  But I do agree. I think, like, you know, I know, I know the listeners, and I one of the reasons I want to have you on the show after I met you, is like, I know the women here will love listening to you, because we all came from this like time of overdoing overthinking. Have to map it all out. Has to has to feel like the right time, but not feel because we're not listening to our feelings, we're thinking our feelings and and so thank you for that. Be it actually, because I think we. Actually have to get into the feeling more, the actual feeling more, not the brain thinking feeling more. Wendy Valentine 35:04  Yeah, exactly. And especially since RVing, like, I'm on the no plan, plan like I don't. I used to plan everything in detail, and if I did not have that plan in place, I would not make a move. Now I'm like, I mean, 90 days is probably as much as I can plan, even though I like to dream and envision and things like that. Planning out too much does not leave room for miracles and spontaneity and the fun stuff. So don't forget to have fun and just enjoy, yeah.Lesley Logan 35:31  Yeah. Uh, I adore you. We'll have to run in, we'll run into each other someday, because I also love to get to we're gonna, we're gonna head down on our Summer Tour into Arizona, so maybe if you're still there, you know it's it's a little more than 90 days. So I'll ask you when it's closer, but you know, Wendy, thank you so much. Thank you for being you. Y'all go listen to her podcast. Go pre-order her book. Let us know. Tag Wendy. Tag the Be It Pod. Send us a textWhat if everything you perceive is based on error rather than truth? Far from being discouraging, this realization offers profound liberation – if the world were truth, we'd be permanently stuck with suffering, separation, and death. In this enlightening session from Sedona, Hope Johnson explores how we project our entire experience and can transform it by bringing our perceptions to the truth. "The world is an invention based on an erroneous thought," she explains, "a thought that made you into something you're not." When we recognize we're still as God created us, we find freedom from the ego's constant conditioning toward separation. The most powerful transformation occurs when we welcome discomfort rather than resist it. Hope suggests responding to anxiety or uncomfortable feelings with "Hooray! This is where I bring illusions to the truth." These moments of apparent difficulty become holy ground for awakening when approached with willingness rather than fear.Through personal stories, listener questions, and profound insights, Hope demonstrates how to distinguish between the ego's voice (which feels rushed, controlling, and evaluative) and the Holy Spirit's guidance (which feels inspirational, peaceful, and connective). We explore how physical symptoms and energy depletion stem from our thoughts rather than external sources, and how tears often mask deeper truths about our perceptions. The session culminates in a beautiful explanation of our interconnectedness. We "people our world" with those who reflect our beliefs, yet communicate on a level beneath manifestation, always connecting with each other's truth. When we recognize that everything serves our awakening, we find perfect peace regardless of circumstances.Ready to transform your perception and experience the freedom of truth? Listen now, and discover why Hope often finds herself laughing at the illusions we create. Your world is waiting to be seen differently.Support the show

In the early morning hours of July 9, 1993, police in Sedona, Arizona received a dispatch call from 911 regarding a domestic violence related shooting at a home on Coffee Pot Drive. When they arrived at the home, officers found thirty-one-year-old Russell Peterson performing CPR on his longtime girlfriend, Stephanie Wasilishin, who was lying on the floor of the couple's bedroom with a large hole in her neck from a .44 caliber bullet. Also present in the bedroom was the couple's four-year-old daughter. At first, Peterson told investigators that Stephanie had fired the gun at him in the living room, then retreated to the bedroom, where the two struggled over the gun, during which Stephanie was shot. Later, however, Peterson changed his story, telling detectives he couldn't remember what happened, but he thought Stephanie shot herself. Further complicating matters was the couple's daughter, who told detectives “Papa killed her.”For decades, the Wasilishin family has sought justice for Stephanie, but that justice and the answers to their questions have remained elusive. With the passage of time, is it possible for investigators to close the case on Stephanie Wasilishin's death, or has too much time passed for a resolution to present itself?Looking to sign the petition? Send us a textWhat if you discovered that true forgiveness isn't about pardoning yourself for miscreating, but recognizing you never had the power to miscreate in the first place? This revelation forms the cornerstone of our exploration into what A Course in Miracles calls "miracles that collapse time."During this raw, unfiltered conversation, we dive deep into the subtle yet profound difference between circular miracles—which provide temporary relief while maintaining the illusion of separation—and miracles that truly collapse time by establishing that we're simply dreaming a dream whose content isn't true. The journey takes unexpected turns as we examine personal boundaries through a radical lens. Rather than viewing boundaries as self-protection mechanisms, what happens when we recognize they aren't personal at all but guided by the Holy Spirit? This perspective transforms how we navigate relationships, allowing for a level of trust and freedom that might seem impossible to the ego mind.Perhaps most striking is the transparent exploration of how this understanding plays out in daily life—from food preferences to sexual experiences. By stripping away the heavy meaning and judgment the ego places on these aspects of human experience, we discover a natural sensuality and joy available in every moment. The conversation continually returns to a powerful practice: watching the unwatched mind. When we develop the habit of witnessing thoughts without identifying with them, even seemingly distressing thoughts lose their power. This watchfulness reveals that whatever arises in our experience—pleasant or challenging—is perfectly designed for our awakening. If you're ready to move beyond spiritual concepts into lived experience, this dialogue offers a refreshingly honest glimpse into what freedom from the ego's constraints actually looks like. Join us in exploring how transparency, trust, and true forgiveness open the door to a profound peace that transcends all circumstances.Support the show

Lately, I've been thinking about what it really means to feel at home. On a recent call with my mom, she asked if I missed Florida, and it hit me that I don't miss the house I lived in for seven years. I miss the people. That reminder, along with an old saying from my grandma Cullen, got me thinking about how home isn't about walls or an address. It's about the heart-level connections that make us feel supported, understood, and truly at ease. In this episode, I share stories from the road. I reflect on time with friends in Scottsdale, a soulful experience in Sedona with a sound healer, and the importance of finding people who feel like home. As we take our Wise Walk together, I invite you to slow down, check in with your own heart, and consider who and what makes you feel most connected. Where is your heart pulling you or calling you to go? What is it about this idea of home that makes you feel emotionally connected? Can you drop into your heart and pay attention to the emotional connections that feel most like home? What qualities or humans in your life feel most like home to you? Who in your life feels naturally like home? Where can you have deep, soulful connections and conversations that light you up? How can you put yourself in situations where you attract and experience more of that feeling? Is there a relationship you've newly come into contact with that makes you feel at peace and relaxed? Do you feel called to deepen that new relationship and see what possibilities it holds for your growth? I grow so much from your heartfelt shares, from seeing where you are in this space and time, and from watching the openness you create lead you forward. I'm always cheering you on.  Please reach out and let me know what resonated for you in today's episode. And as always, be sure to prioritize fun as you read the signs, direct your path, and get your Stride On. In this episode: [03:49] I love the high vibe in Sedona, and it's known for its energy vortexes. [04:42] When I was there, I decided to work with a sound healing practitioner. We also got into a great conversation afterwards. I'm healing and allowing myself to be open to opportunities that present themselves. [06:04] I want to be of service and use my gifts and talents and Heart Value in a way that feels aligned. [07:29] Not everywhere will feel like home, but the awareness we give ourselves is a beautiful thing. [08:22] Having an emotional connection on a community level feels like home. [09:17] It's the people that keep us connected and grounded on our journey. [10:13] The healer's name is Karen, and we're going to stay connected.  [11:48] We went on a beautiful hike, and she gave me a different perspective on the area. [13:27] I love that we can have these experiences and share them from the heart, no matter where we are. [14:21] I'm glad I was brave and sold the home and was able to detach and go on this journey. [15:16] I love this podcast, and I feel so connected to the inner work that we are doing together. Send us a textHuman Design Circuitry - Part 1Human Design Circuitry is another dimension of our unique personal blueprint designed to empower us with knowledge of ourselves. This circuitry refers to the categories of interconnected channels within the body influencing personality, relationships, and overall functioning. It represents shared themes, core beliefs, behaviors, and preferences that offer a 'big picture' perspective. In this episode we explore the three categories of Human Design circuitry we all fall into. Why our consciousness aligns with some and resists others. My thinking here, was to provide information that might increase our understanding, empathy, and compassion for each other. To encourage building bridges instead of living in separation. I challenge you to take this information and allow it to inspire your hearts and minds. To question what is currently dividing friends, families, countries. And to consider that each one of us has the capacity to heal our world. If we choose connection over being right. If we allow others to grow at their own pace. This doesn't mean we give up ourselves. It means we raise our consciousness and ask more of ourselves. Music by Robin MillerIn The Company of AngelsSongs:  The Garden of Mu & Oceans of Love     www.robinmillermusic.comSponsor:Native Jewelry of Sedona  Largest selection of authentic Native American jewelry in Arizona928-282-9100.  nativejewelrygallery.comFacebook: Native Jewelry of SedonaLocated in the second block of Uptown SedonaThe Copper Heart Art for Heart SenseArtist Catherine StefanavageWebsite:  iamcatherine.comEmail: iamcatherine16@gmail.com                                                                                                                                                                                                         A huge Thank You to all our Sponsors! Reiki awakens intuition and helps you trust your inner guidance in both subtle and profound ways. In this Distance Reiki Share, Colleen and Robyn explore how Reiki opens the clairsenses, expands the heart light, and teaches discernment so you can recognize your unique intuitive style. Reiki shows us that everyone has intuitive ability. Some may see images, others feel sensations, hear words, or simply know. These differences are natural, and Reiki helps you discover and strengthen your own way of receiving guidance. Reiki heals the blocks that may hide the power of your intuition from you. The Reiki energy provides the frequency that allows intuitive impressions to grow stronger, and over time you learn to trust them in daily life. In this video you'll learn: * How Reiki activates intuition through your whole body.  * Reiki entrains your head brain, heart brain and gut brain to your higher consciousness   * Simple ways to notice whether your intuition comes through sight, sound, feeling, or knowing * How to recognize your clair senses without comparison or judgment * Practical discernment tips to observe energy rather than absorb it Robyn and Colleen were recently at that Sedona Reiki retreat and shared their experiences with the extra-ordinary beauty of Sedona, through the red rocks, sage green plant life, Juniper trees and the nature of the land and how Reiki entrains you to higher frequencies wherever you are, whether in nature, at home, or in your everyday routines. We just spent a wonderful five days in Flagstaff, Arizona, and things were beautiful, including the weather. I was so excited to escape the Florida heat, pack up the van, and take the dogs out on some beautiful hikes. But the second we rolled in, the altitude made itself known. I was winded just walking to the trailhead, and the dogs looked at me like, what's your problem, mom? Even the bag of chips I brought along puffed up like it was ready to pop, which cracked me up because it felt like the universe was saying, “yep, everything's under pressure up here.” Instead of charging ahead like I planned, I had to back off. We took shorter hikes, stopped more often, and drank water like it was our full-time job. I had this vision of big adventure days, but once I stopped fighting it, I noticed the little things. One pup, Trooper, bounding over rocks like a champ, the other, Cali, carefully navigating her way around them, and me realizing maybe I don't always have to be in go-mode to enjoy myself. Slowing down wasn't what I pictured, but it actually made the trip better. That's what today's Wise Walk is about. It's those times when life forces you to downshift, and how the pause can end up being exactly what you needed all along. Where in your life are you experiencing high intensity times? Are you juggling so much that you're just trying not to drop anything? When you're in go-mode, are you remembering to retreat and rest? Are you giving your body time to adjust instead of pushing through? Where are you pushing yourself harder than feels sustainable? What does it look like for you to take a reprieve from demands? How can you create moments of stillness to check in with yourself? Are you nurturing your heart, mind, body, and spirit with what they need? Are you remembering that high intensity modes are temporary? Where can you build in time to rest and restore before the next push? Are you aware when you've slipped into high intensity mode? Can you pause long enough to say, “this is not sustainable”? What helps you balance intensity with stillness? How do you allow yourself to recharge after a big effort? What practices help you feel grounded in the middle of chaos? Where in your life can you retreat or slow down right now? What shifts when you notice your surroundings with fresh eyes? How can you meander without purpose and still find perspective? Where have you gained clarity by stepping back? How can you apply that clarity the next time intensity rises? As always, I would love to hear what you took away from today's episode, so please feel free to reach out, and then I look forward to next Thursday's Wise Walk, so be sure to tune in, share this episode if it resonates with you, and until then, please be sure to prioritize fun as you read the signs, direct your path, and get your Stride On. In this episode: [03:27] Previously I talked about flying into Reno to visit some friends in Tahoe, California, and I forgot about the elevation differences, and I did get altitude sickness on that trip. [04:10] Our bodies have to adjust. Everything has to adjust from the dogs to my bag of potato chips. [05:18] We allowed time to hydrate and let our bodies adjust. We didn't push ourselves to a point of exertion that would make us sick. [06:11] In those high intensity moments, it's hard to know the internal needs of our own bodies, minds, and hearts. [07:34] The dogs and I had a magical time in Flagstaff, Arizona. We did some intense hiking and then slept hard. [08:49] Periods of exertion are healthy. [11:12] I also saw this idea come to life driving from Flagstaff, Arizona to Sedona, Arizona. There were swerving roads and hills and driving was a high intensity moment. [13:50] Life is like that when you have those high intensity moments. I was gripping the wheel and then when I got to the other side I could just breathe. [14:39] High intensity moments are just life, and I need to balance them out with time to decompress. [15:58] This awareness has reminded me that I need to create space to get out of my own environment. [17:11] On my trip to Ireland, I was able to get out of my environment, and it's the same for this trip. [19:39] The other big gift this trip has given me is perspective from seeing the contrast in my life from intense to recovery. Memorable Quotes: “We can do high intensity as long as we balance that with some downtime, some downshifting, some restorative time.” - Mary Tess “We don't have to live in go-mode all the time. Downshifting is how we keep moving forward with joy.” - Mary Tess “Rest doesn't mean you're falling behind. It means you're preparing for the next climb.” - Mary Tess Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Heart Value Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram

Welcome to or welcome back to the Retreat Leaders Podcast at Shannon. I am super stoked about my guest today. Before we started recording, I told our guest that I don't have enough of them on my show or enough of them. You know that I see in the retreat space. So welcome Brent to the show. I'm so excited you're here. Brent 00:00:44  Thank you. Shannon, it's my pleasure to be here. I appreciate the time. Shannon  00:00:48  Yes. So Brent is a retreat host. And what I meant by there's not enough of them, or at least I don't see enough of them. And so maybe it's just not on my radar as much as it should be, is that there's not enough men hosting men retreats, in my opinion, and Brent hosts men retreats that look absolutely fantastic. Shannon  00:01:06  But I don't want to take away too much of your thunder, Brent. So why don't you just tell us all about who you are, what you do, and what brought you to where you are now? Brent 00:01:13  Absolutely. Thank you. So, I'm a previous corporate, employee. I was a, you know, a mid senior level HR leader for about ten years working in corporate America. Before that, I was in the car wash industry working as an operations leader. So for for like 15, 20 years, I was working for the man. And I got to the point where, last year, well, about two years ago, I went to an event out in Austin and I was really moved by it. And in that moment, sitting with 100 people, I looked to my friend and I said to him, I said, listen, man, I'm going to do this someday. I want to do this kind of thing. And I didn't know how it was going to happen. I didn't know what to expect. Brent 00:01:53  But, what ended up working out was that, you know, last year, you know, I made a pretty good deal on a real estate thing that I was doing on the side. And about Q3, Q4 of last year, I had this epiphany that like, if I wanted to, I could probably take a year, year and a half off and see if I could grow this, this retreat business into something. Shannon  00:02:15  And yes. Brent 00:02:16  Yeah. So it was really, it was exciting and nerve wracking at the same time. Right? You know, it's like, I have no idea what I don't know. yep. But I trust. Right? You know, I trusted and, I actually did a, I went to this breathwork, certification thing, and I came back from that in December of last year, and I was all of a sudden I was in a meditation after doing a breathwork. And it was like I felt like, you know, the universe just zapped into my head and was like, you should do a men's retreat. Brent 00:02:47  And I'm like, okay. Speaker 3 00:02:51  I didn't think about that. But, you know, I was like, all right. Like, let's, let's look at this. Brent 00:02:55  And, and but I didn't know where, you know, like I had coordinated things in corporate HR. Before, you know, corporate retreat type things, but not in this space. And I felt this, this urge to go to Sedona. And I had never been to Sedona before. I knew nothing about it. Literally had no idea where it even was. But I was like, okay, that's cool. Like, let's go. and, you know, six months later, you know, I had my first retreat. So, you know, it's been a journey. You know, it's, it's a it's a gift. It's really what it comes down to. So, you know, I don't wanna get too long winded on it, but I. Shannon  00:03:28  Know that this is great. Okay, so there's so many things that happened just in this first snippet. Shannon  00:03:34  the first thing is, is, like, you definitely received your download because for you to have a download that says, go to Sedona and you've never even been there or didn't even know where it is. that's definitely a download. It's not usually what I would recommend unless it's a download. Right. Because, you know, we we typically want to host at least our first retreat. and I'm even a fan of saying all retreats in places we've been to at least one time. However, there are definitely situations like this where something is speaking to you and you've just got to follow it. And I love this so much. Let's talk about the fact. Steve, here's the thing, guys. What we're going to talk about today is Brent's recap of his first retreat, and then now how he's going to learn from that retreat and go forward. Because I think a lot of people, Brent, they think my first retreat, I'm going to make $1 million and it's going to be knocked out of the park. Shannon  00:04:26  And I also think there are a lot of people out there making it sound like you can do that, like you can just all of a sudden be an instant success. But the truth is that there's no such thing in any industry. I don't care what it is. If corporate, small business, large business, it doesn't matter what it is. You're typically not an instant success unless you consider the learning, the success, which I do. Right? Because that's what those first few retreats are. At least the first 1 to 3 are learning experiences and their investments for future ones. So I would love, Brent, for you to tell us what happened on your first retreat and what was the biggest downloads and learnings you got from it? Brent 00:05:04  Yeah, yeah. Absolutely, absolutely. I mean, the the goal here was just to break even. You know, I, I, you know, I remember listening to episodes that you had shared and even in your book where it says like don't go too far away. Brent 00:05:16  And I'm like, oh my God. Like I live in Western New York. I'm going to this, this place I've never even been to. Right. So, you know, like, I booked a flight and I got out there two weeks later and I scoped it out, and and things just really aligned very well. but really, you know, what I learned from this was in the retreats, probably. And as with anything new, who you're coming up against is not the people that I was advertising to or, you know, my family. I was coming up against myself. You know. Shannon  00:05:47  This? Yes. Brent 00:05:49  Vulnerable space to be in, financially vulnerable, energetically vulnerable. And, you know, and to know that, like, not everybody catches the, you know, picks up what you're throwing down there. Right? Like, people are like, what the hell are you talking about? You're doing this, you know? So, yeah, I really I invested in a program. that was okay. Brent 00:06:11  Like, I spent a lot of money on it, but it was. It had a pretty good return for me, at least, to get me familiar, because I didn't have, like, an Instagram following. I didn't have a LinkedIn following. I, I'm not on Facebook that often. So how do you do this? Right? and that was part of facing off with myself is like overcoming this limit, these limiting beliefs that I need those things in order for that to happen. And, I'll be honest with you, I was going to I was going to throw it out, like I that got to be I had one person sign up. It was the end of March. the, the, the agreements that I signed were coming into the point were like, okay, you're you're within 90 days, you're within 45 days. You need to, you know, make sure you get a deposit. You're on the hook for this. And, I just didn't see it happening and I just totally I gave up, and I was going to take the website down. Brent 00:07:03  And I remember thinking, you know, I've got it. I'm going to take the website down, on like Thursday or no, it was like a week before. And then all a sudden I'm like, I'll just wait. I'll wait a little bit. I'm going to have this meeting with a friend and then we'll see what happens. Well, before this meeting with my friend, I'm making breakfast one morning and I get this text alert and I'm like, what the hell is this from? And I look, and somebody had actually registered for the event like a straight cold registration. And all of a sudden I had this moment and it's like, wait a minute, maybe that vision from a couple months ago is true. Maybe this like, maybe there is something out there that's matching what people need or what men need, and maybe I should try a different route. And so it brought up this sense of inspiration. and then I signed up, 4 or 5 other people within two weeks. Shannon  00:07:49  Like it just. Shannon  00:07:50  Wow. Brent 00:07:51  Yeah. Yeah, it was really powerful. so, you know, from that lens, like, I learned, like, if I try to force it, it's going to be way more difficult than if I just, you know, take the right action and allow it to kind of manifest or create itself and create the outcomes. Yes. And then also, you know, even just from the the overall experience, like I had a whole budget thing written out, I, I'm a numbers guy. So I was looking at a lot of that, and, and trusting the process that, you know, like I, I knew my numbers well enough so I could speak to things confidently. I knew it was going to be within like $500 plus or minus, so I was okay with that. and then and then really the, the self-efficacy of realizing, right, like in the midst of the retreat, realizing I'm doing it like, wow, this is really happening, right? Seeing other people's lives start to change in a matter of four days. Brent 00:08:44  And then afterwards, that feeling of, you know what? I can do this. And now after the response that I got from them, I'm like, I think I should do this more. And so that's what led me to to building into this second retreat now. Shannon  00:08:58  Okay, Brent. First of all, congratulations. You've done your first retreat and in my opinion, it was a huge success. Also, I want to harp on a little bit or not harp on. That's not the right word, but I want to just celebrate. I guess, again, this mindset shift that you had, because that's really what sounds like happened when you got that second, that second booking. I'm a big fan, I tell. I like to tell people who are who are new in the business that if you got one booking and it's an aligned booking, right, it's you got one aligned booking, then there's others out there. You're just either not speaking the right language, taking the right action, etc. and so forth. Shannon  00:09:37  I also like to say, now if you've got none, then we need to revisit what what your words are and who you're talking to and all the other stuff. But if you get one, at least aligned one. The other thing is you said something really powerful. My opinion is you can manifest and attract and allow all you want, but if it doesn't have action assigned with it, then it's just daydreaming to me. And daydreaming is fine, but it won't equate to what you just said happened in your mindset shift. So another congratulations, because that's really cool. So yay. First retreat. Nailed it. Nailed the mindset shift. Now coming out of that, and also, I am so glad that you got to see some of the transformation for other people through the space that you're holding, because that's what you're going to hold on to, Brent, as you continue to grow your business, because now you're going to based upon our conversation before we start recording, you're going to build this into a profitable machine. Shannon  00:10:37  And in order to do that, you're going to run into more obstacles. The mindset is going to get a little Willy Wonka. And we'll talk about that and and your plans. But but you're just you will naturally. That's what happens when we are on the precipice of growing big. But you're going to hold on to that whole like, I saw what this does. I know the value of what this is like. I'm just I'm a big believer that we can have impact and income. They don't have to be exclusive. And so anyway, so share with me now like what are we doing to make sure that it's profitable. What are some changes or what are some things that you're doing. Brent 00:11:15  100%. You know, like I there were things that we did in like Sedona, an inexpensive place to be. Like, I didn't know that. I know that now, you know, and there's there's times a year to be there and times of year that you don't want to be there. And, you know, so what I really took away from this, like I kind of did like what I call like an after action report. Brent 00:11:33  Right. So when I was in the military, after every mission, you look back and you say, okay, what was it that we did? What did we do? Well, what could we do differently? Right. So after doing this, what I really looked at was like some things were they didn't really have the impact, you know, like. so for example like we went on like this Jeep tour, like it was nice, it was fun. But like the guys weren't raving about it, it was just more of like nice to have now the zipline tour. Everybody loved it. Even those that were afraid of it and overcame themselves there. They loved it. So, you know, when I look at that, you know, I think about like, okay, because part of my modus operandi is every day we're going to do something off site. So like we go to hotels, I like to stay in nicer places. so we're going to stay at, like, a nice hotel. Brent 00:12:17  We're going to go out, we're going to do something off site. We're going to come back during the day. We're going to train, you know, have teachings, all that kind of thing. And then we're going to go out for nice dinners at the same time. And what I realized was like, as I, as I build into Austin, like, I don't need to, like we're going to do ziplines. Like for sure. Right. Like that's going to be awesome. But like I looked at like, oh, maybe we could do horseback riding and we could do this and we could do that. And I'm like, but does it need to happen? Right? So like when I look at it and I realize something's going to cost $2,000, but is it really going to align with what I'm teaching? Is it going to make an impact and help drive home what we're learning? Right? Or is it, you know, kind of like how, you know, you talk about like, yeah, people want to know like the activities, but they're looking for the feeling. Brent 00:13:02  They're looking for the transformation more than anything else. Right? So now as I look at it, what I'm looking for now is, is what what what are the critical few that are going to really land, right. And you know, for me ziplines that that's something that lands because even if you love them, you're still going to get a rush of adrenaline. There's still going to be some type of emotional response in our body. and you know just I like to have something a little bit. That's, that's specific to the area too. Right. So like when we go out to dinner we're not going to like KFC. We're not going to McDonald's. We're going to go to nice places that are in the area. and, and you know, one I want I want the guys to feel good. Right. So yeah, as I look at that now and then I look at how I'm pricing it, like I knew I was underpriced. I didn't know how much until I was actually on the retreat. Brent 00:13:52  And I remember, like, we rented like this big SUV and we're driving to this, I don't even know what we were doing, but I remember driving with all the guys in the truck, and and I'm like, this is like a $5,000 retreat. Like, they're like, I would pay. Not because I'm biased, but like, I would pay $5,000 for this. And I was charging, like 335. Yeah. So yeah, as I look at this now, now I've created, you know, the packages that range between 3500 to 5000. and then I'm adding the value. Right. Like, it's it's all dependent on what value you want out of it. And then also with what I've reduced from, from an expense standpoint. Now that margin went from really, like, maybe 1% to now I'm targeting more like 20 to 30% margin. And that. Shannon  00:14:38  Gives me, yeah. Brent 00:14:39  Bigger wiggle room and confidence to step into it because I know what it's worth. Shannon  00:14:44  Hey, retreat leaders, pause that retreat planning for just a second because I've got something you do not want to miss. Shannon  00:14:49  I'm headed to London this October to host a live event that's all about teaching you how to host a retreat that's not just transformational, but actually profitable. Imagine sipping tea or champagne with other like minded leaders while mapping out your next sold out retreat. It's happening at the gorgeous Waldorf Hilton in London. I'm spilling all the secrets from pricing to planning, marketing to mindset, and you'll walk away with a strategy you can actually use. No fluff, no BS, just results. So head to Retreat Mastermind training and come join me across the pond. Yes, yes, I noticed this. So Brent and I were talking before we started recording about. it's just my philosophy. Not all hosts are like this, but I'm not a discount person. I'm just. I absolutely am anti discount. And I love though, Brent. How you. I mean, I really loved how you built the value into each offering. So it's kind of like okay here's your first soft touch point you which includes this. And it's you know, 3500 or whatever it was. Shannon  00:15:54  This touch point includes these extra things, and it's 45, you know what I mean? Like, I just I absolutely love that I think that you are positioning yourself in such a way that it is going to be beautifully aligned for the guest to get what they want out of it, and then you to feel energetically aligned in a financial way for what you're offering. Right? Yeah, yes. Because the ones that are paying more, they're getting more from you. and so it's it's a really beautiful exchange. So it sounds like you're totally aligned. Tell me the difference about planning for Sedona, which, by the way, I'm really glad to hear that you at least went and visited the spot before you hosted there. Brent 00:16:33  So yeah. Shannon  00:16:33  Yeah, that really helps. And anybody who's listening, if you're planning a retreat and you've never been there, you've I'm telling you, you've got to make a site visit. It just makes all the difference in the world. and it just really does. But tell me the difference is in planning. Shannon  00:16:47  Now, your second retreat with a different location. like, what are some things that have come up for you in this process? Brent 00:16:54  Yeah, absolutely. I mean, what's nice now is I kind of know the recipe, right? Like, I kept everything the same. Like I'm looking like on my monitor to my right. Has everything written out different? Tabs on the worksheet. I know exactly what I'm looking at. And I've built this. I mean, you don't get to where. Not that I was, like, super high up, but like, you don't achieve success in air in corporate unless you know how to be a business partner, which means working with operations leaders, figuring out how to, you know, make money with the people. You have those kind of things. So when I looked at this and I'm like, okay, well, then I know what I need. I mean, I've done this with entrepreneurs, I've done this with fortune 500 companies. I need to do this for myself and in some ways kind of put myself in check, too, like if I'm dreaming, like I had a conversation with someone and they're like, oh, we're going to do this, and then we're going to have affiliate marketing and this and that. Brent 00:17:43  And I'm like, hang on a second. Like, let's get let's get up on our two feet first before we start thinking about this. You know, I love the energy, but let's just, you know, little reality check. so, you know, when I look at this now, I've got this the recipe. At the same time, I've been to Austin like 3 or 4 times in the last year, year and a half. So like, I'm familiar with where I want to go, I know that I don't want to take everybody out on sixth Street. If I want them to stay sober and have a really good, you know, experience besides having like a party until way late and feeling hungover. Right? So, yes, you know, so I know the spots where I want to go, you know, I know I knew the type of hotel we wanted to stay at. And so this time, it's a lot easier because I've been there, you know, and now and as I build into next year, I'm going to have several other retreats. Brent 00:18:31  And in some of these areas I've not been. So I look at it as it's an investment now I need to get out there. I need to to move and shake. I need to talk to people. You know, I've got three trips this summer to go to different places because I so firmly believe that that there's an energetic calling for this type of work, that it's just a matter of like where and when and how. So that how has become a lot easier now that I've gone through the one. Shannon  00:18:58  How, yes, yes to all of that. Well, We'll tell our listeners. Who is your ideal guest? And then tell us about your upcoming retreat. Brent 00:19:06  Absolutely. Thank you. So the ideal guest is obviously a man. it could be anywhere. you know, typically what I've seen, you know, in this last retreat was anywhere from their, their early 40s to their mid 60s, you know. for me, it doesn't really matter if the the key of what I look for is, are you at a crossroads in your life? Do you know that you want something different? Do you know what that is? And maybe it's just that you're not sure of how to get there. Brent 00:19:32  And if that's the case, then you're my ideal client. Because what I look at is, you know, I have a balance. I, I don't get super woo woo because especially as men, we don't typically want to get into that woo woo space. And you know, and I should also add that my ideal client is somebody who really hasn't been in this space before, that they haven't been to a retreat before. If they have been, maybe it's in a corporate background. So now what I'm doing is I'm giving them some of the neuroscience behind And change some of the things that have been found over the last ten, 15 years as it relates to meditation and breathwork, and then also tying that into a little bit of the woo woo just to get, you know, dab their dab their toes in it a little bit, but not shock the nervous system to. Shannon  00:20:15  Love. Brent 00:20:16  It. I don't want them walking out going like I'm never doing this again. You know I want. Shannon 00:20:20  I love it. Brent 00:20:21  You'll walk around, you know, walk out saying like, you know what? It was the the best balance of of opportunity. I learned some things. I tried some new things. And as a result, this is what's happened for me. Shannon  00:20:31  I love it. Awesome. So when is your next retreat? We know it's in Austin. When is that happening? Brent 00:20:37  Yeah, it's October 23rd through 26th of this year. and yeah, we're going to kick off. We're going to stay at this beautiful hotel just in the hill country, about 20 minutes south of Austin. and then we're going to kick off, like I said, ziplining all the fun stuff there. But more importantly than anything, we're going to have a strong sense of community. We're going to have anywhere from 8 to 12 guys that are going to get together, you know, from all over the country and they're here to. To better themselves. They're here to get through whatever's been blocking them. And that, to me is the most important part, is that transformation truly happens when you get people that are looking for it and are hungry enough to to sit at the table and see what happens. Brent 00:21:18  So I'm very excited for it. I think it's going to be incredible. Shannon  00:21:21  Well, hell yes Brent, all of that information will be linked in the show notes, so please check it out and share it with someone who you think might really benefit from this, because I can tell from the website, from your history, and from your energy that this is going to be an incredible retreat. So thank you so much, Brent, for sharing your history, your lessons, and your upcoming offerings. It is so appreciated. Brent 00:21:43  Thank you Shan, I really appreciate the opportunity. Shannon  00:21:45  Thanks for listening to The Retreat Leader's podcast. Learn more at The Retreat. See you next time.

I am just back from a vacation that took me across three states, one Navajo reservation, and some federal land in the southwest of the United States. Departing the humid and heavily greened northeast to the dry and brown and red landscapes of the southwest was a major transition. I have never spent that much time in that part of the country, so it was, you might say, quite the experience. Traveling throughout the region really revealed the expansiveness of it. The lack of foliage will do that as you can kind of see to the horizon between the buttes and mesas. It also was my first time flying in a long time where I didn't have to take off my shoes going through security. That was exciting. Well, maybe not exciting but one less thing to manage and deal with given all the other rules and restrictions that we have to face when trying to get to our lanes. When thinking about the trip and all the jurisdictions I crossed, it can be hard to keep track of what I can and cannot do. City laws, state laws, federal laws, tribal laws, airport regulations. What's legal in Vegas is not legal in Sedona. What you might be able to do in Page, Arizona isn't necessarily the same as St. George, Utah. You get the point. And let's keep in mind that all of this started in Boston, Massachusetts. The law can be complicated no matter what, and only becomes that much more challenging when you are throwing in all of these different environments. And did I mention the seemingly constant shift in time zones as you cross different borders? My guest today has a keen interest in making the law more manageable. Professor Demetrios Karis has been exploring ways of improving legal design to improve access and outcomes for citizens engaging the courts. As we discuss, there is plenty of work to do that keeps him and his students busy. From legal forms, to wayfinding in courts, to translating legal procedures, to legal language itself, the law has a lot of room to make things easier and create better experiences.I talk with Demetrios, who is a colleague of mine at Bentley University, about the origins of his user experience career through this PhD in Experimental Psychology from Cornell. He shares his first job at Grumman Aircraft, where he was looking at the design of cockpits and instrumentation as part of their internal research and development group. He shares his journey to Verizon, and then to Google where he learned more about doing qualitative research and ethnography. He then discusses how his teaching at Bentley University and experiences in the court system resulted in working with the Massachusetts courts to try to improve access and usability of courts and the law. As he states, the court system is designed by lawyers for lawyers. Despite that, more people are representing themselves, which results in massive challenges on what to do and how to do it. We also talk about his writing on the collapse of human civilization resulting from the sustainability crisis, and how we need to tackle challenges in complex systems through intensive study, creativity, and determination to make positive changes. Demetrios Karis LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/demetrioskaris/Demetrios Karis Researchgate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Demetrios-Karis
