Dom Ferris, founder of Trash Free Trails joins The Ride Companion to talk about one of the biggest issues affecting every rider, runner and outdoor space user: single-use pollution on our trails. Dom explains how Trash Free Trails started, why trail litter is about far more than 'bad behaviour' and how mountain bikers can take real ownership of the places they ride. The conversation goes deep into MTB trail stewardship, nature connection, mental health, community action and the systems that keep single-use pollution showing up in the outdoors. We also dive into the data behind trail litter, the reality of what's being found on UK trails, why drinks cans, bottles, gels and food packaging are such a major problem along with how new legislation like a deposit return scheme could help change things. There's loads in here too on trail culture, bike park responsibility, how to make cleanups more positive, and why Dom believes outrage alone won't solve anything. If you care about mountain biking, trail building, riding spots, the outdoor community, litter picking, environmental action, access to nature and keeping trails clean, this is an episode you need to hear and share with your community. We hope you enjoy the episode! Learn more about Trash Free Trails and the Spring clean at trashfreetrails.org/ Episode Sponsors:- - Want an easy way to tick your daily nutritional needs? Reach out and touch us: shiftlesslive@gmail.comThe hosts record at Dusty Roads after heavy rain makes local trails uncertain, while one describes being busy with home projects and planning a curing room for salamis, cheeses, and preserving food for future dinners and grazing tables. They discuss scheduling March and April dinner events and a possible Easter-week scouting trip to California. One recounts riding San Diego's Coast-to-Crest Trail, destroying a tubeless tire from suspected trail debris, and outfitting a Trek Tributary e-bike with chunkier tires; they troubleshoot a nonworking Bosch display likely due to a coin battery. Conversation shifts to rumors of higher-power DJI motors, demand for longer-range and modular-battery e-bikes, and concerns about e-bike regulations. They also cover 32-inch wheel speculation (including a rumored titanium Salsa Fargo rework), Sea Otter/Taipei/Tour Divide expectations, a new Kona drop-bar MTB, Revel rehiring Chris Riel, import trends, and brief Valley of Tears results discussion.00:00 Are We Recording01:03 Back at Dusty Roads01:54 Home Projects Overload02:45 Curing Room Dream04:54 Paula and Bikes07:34 April Dates and Travel09:19 Coast to Crest Flat12:13 New Tires and Display15:54 California Van Plan18:18 DJI Motor Rumors22:53 Swappable Battery Wish26:10 Fargo Goes 3232:15 Surly Builds and KM37:17 Revel Brings Back Chris38:36 Revel Ride Plans39:00 Ebike Imports Surge39:56 Made in USA Debate42:02 Kona Drop Bar MTB44:21 N Plus One Wishlist46:30 Next Gen Ebike Tech48:42 Ebikes Rules Enforcement52:23 Trail Impact Reality54:49 Forum Culture Echoes57:22 Who Buys Ebikes01:06:05 Valley of Tears Check01:12:54 Gear Dates Rumors01:14:23 Trinity Trio Plans01:17:22 Wrap Up and Share

Welcome to the Gnar Couch Podshow, where mountain biking meets middle school humor, and none of our intros ever go according to plan—thanks in advance, Rob. This week, we welcome the one and only April Zastrow to the show: former pro motocross racer, mountain biking content creator, surfer, and the kind of human we'd totally trust around our children, if we weren't such bad influences ourselves. We saddle up and ride through April's “mutt life” of action sports, her journey from nearly getting lapped in pro moto to inspiring future shredders (including Rob's daughter), and why bigger jumps aren't as scary as small ones. We also plunge into the gnarly reality of being a woman in the MTB world, how she handles haters (spoiler: better than JP handles whiskey and the Old Rampate Site), and the science of bike squeaks, especially when Ryan Rodriguez is nearby. Of course, things get off track: there's talk of “dump trucks,” debates over whether Rob can leave his house without spilling beer, and our patented EXT/TRP appreciation rant. If you love deep dives into gear AND deep dives into our own self-esteem issues, you're in the right spot. If not, just stick around for the part where we try to figure out if May June is a better name than April. So tune in for bikes, bad jokes, a little self-deprecation, and a solid chance you'll hear something about mayonnaise, wieners, or at least a brake lever pulled with someone's pinky. It's the Gnar Couch Podshow. Cumb for the chaos, stay for the dumb, and leave with fewer brain cells than you started. Guest info: April Zastrow Check out our store for sick shirts. Got to our Patreon and give us money. We've added old episodes, downloadable songs, and give you early access to raw, uncut shows for only $4.20/month. We all ride TRP brakes. They're the best. Buy some. Thanks to crankbrothers and Hyland Cyclery for always keeping the bikes running. Get 30% off BLIZ sunglasses and more with the code "sponchesmom".
Get into the details of ebikes! Why ride one? Or not? Why did we make the product and design choices we've made in our ebike line? Between these two experts, we deep dive into the world of E. The fastest growing category in MTB, whether you like it or not. Note: Recorded BEFORE the recent storms... it has since rained. It's common for everyone to chase the simple answer for what the best product is. In this week's Geek Warning, Dave and Ronan discuss why those chasing the best of something may be landing upon fiction. Additionally, you'll hear about the differing paths in aero road wheel design between the latest from Princeton Carbon Works and Cadex. Of course, there's a PSA. And our Good Thing segment returns. As with every week, members of Escape Collective get access to our Ask a Wrench segment. This week, Zach Edwards joins Dave to discuss greasing principles, whether to lube electronic derailleurs, mixing-and-matching SRAM brakes, and more. If you like the show, then please consider leaving a review. It's much appreciated. Happy geeking! Thanks to Tourism Tasmania I recently travelled to Maydena where I got to sit down with the one and only, Ed Masters. Ed's at a really interesting point in his career right now, so we get into what's changed for him, why he's moving away from a full Enduro World Cup schedule, and how his perspective on racing has evolved over the years. We talk a bit about the state of enduro, where the discipline sits right now, the challenges it's facing, and why things feel quite different to a few years ago. From there, the conversation continues, touching on the resurgence of downhill, the new generation coming through, and just how fast the level of the sport keeps moving. What do polar expeditions have to teach you about conserving energy, building resilience, and showing up with real confidence? In this episode of The Discomfort Zone, Anna sits down with endurance performance coach Jon Fearne, who has trained record breaking solo polar explorers, Atlantic rowers, and elite endurance athletes for nearly 30 years. This conversation isn't about heroics. It's about what builds real confidence and resilience day after day, and it's probably not what you think. They explore: Why routine reduces mental strain and builds resilience How small energy leaks — not big mistakes — cause failure How to train your nervous system for high-stress environments The psychology of solo adventure What failure really teaches you Why waiting for perfect conditions keeps you stuck Jon shares the unfiltered truth about elite performance: it's not built in heroic moments. It's built in daily discipline. If you've been waiting for ideal conditions before taking action — this episode is your reminder: Confidence comes from preparation. And preparation happens in the mundane.

Five-time overall World Cup champion, but that's history. This episode is about what's next. We dive into the move to Frameworks, his plan to ‘go dark' and get back to his very best, and what Hardline Tasmania was really like from inside the tape. We talk about sharing the pits with teammate and phenom, Asa Vermette, and how that dynamic is shaping up. He also opens up about rebuilding his fitness, the motivation that's still driving him, and what he expects from the season ahead. It's a laid-back chat with one of the greatest the sport has ever seen, heading into what could be the most exciting downhill season in years. Reach out and touch us: shiftlesslive@gmail.comThe hosts record at Casa Verde after recent technical issues and discuss upcoming Fam Food Adventure Memories dinners. Bike topics include Schwalbe entering the 32-inch tire market across mountain, gravel, and reportedly road, plus a rumor of a major brand debuting a 32-inch bike at Sea Otter. They discuss a theory that brands are trying to convert post-COVID gravel buyers who aren't “N+1” riders by offering more stable, confidence-inspiring mountain bikes to expand participation. They talk about the Salsa full-suspension gravel e-bike (Class 3, ~40 lb, 2.2" tires, ~50-mile range) with a high price, and debate who the market is for. They also review the Salsa Stormchaser (frameset vs complete pricing, sliding dropouts, ability to fit 2.2" tires) and discuss bottom bracket standards (criticizing press-fit). The episode covers New Jersey's new law treating any e-bike as a motorcycle (lights, mirror, DOT helmet, plate/registration, insurance) and predicts more sweeping enforcement elsewhere due to high-speed e-bike accidents. The conversation branches into parallels with the gun industry's COVID boom, long-range shooting training to 800 yards, safety and education, and how event organizers manage participant risk. They close with planning notes for Trinity Trio (moved to Sunday the 15th, ~100 miles full route) and conclude with the host heading to Whitesboro to document the kitchen and refrigeration setup.00:00 Mic Check Mayhem: Are We Actually Recording?00:38 Welcome to Shiftless at Casa Verde (Weather, Vibes, Pool Talk)01:21 What's on the Agenda: 32-inch Wheels, E-Bikes & New Laws02:43 FAM Food Adventure Memories Sponsor + Dinner Schedule Updates04:50 January Dinners Canceled: Snow Forecasts, Ice, and Event Chaos07:11 Gravel Road Conditions After the Storm: Potholes, Chunk & Predictions10:21 February 28 FAM Dinner Promo + Menu Tease12:38 Sbarro in New York: The ‘Good Slice' Misunderstanding Storytime16:58 Back to Bikes: Schwalbe Enters 32-Inch Tires + Road/UCI Speculation18:37 The Big Theory: Turning Gravel Newbies into N+1 Riders via MTB22:13 Training Slump & Sick Weeks: Getting Back on the Bike23:16 Salsa Stormchaser Deep Dive: Dropouts, 2.2" Clearance & Build Options28:39 New Salsa Wander: Full-Suspension Gravel E-Bike Arrives29:13 Teal Talk & First Impressions of Salsa's New Gravel E‑Bike30:02 Specs Breakdown: Range, Weight, Tires, Class 3 Speed—and the $13K Question33:46 Salsa Lineup Rumors: Warbird, Spearfish, Name Changes & What's “Coming Soon”35:47 All‑Road vs Gravel: Surly Midnight Special, Industry Identity Crisis & COVID Hangover36:47 SHOT Show Parallels: Forecasting, N+1 Culture, and the ‘Year of the Suppressor'40:15 Range Life: Long‑Range Qualification, Training Layers, and Why Suppressors Rule47:00 Insurance, Scuba Tragedy & Event Risk—From Cave Diving Rules to Gravel Shenanigans54:05 Running Safer Gravel Events: New Rider Handholding, Self‑Responsibility & 101 Clinics01:00:12 Beginner Progression: Gear Overwhelm, Skill Layering, and Building a Real Training Program01:03:09 Back to Riding: Garmin Recovery Shock & Texas Chainring Massacre Weather Check01:05:05 Windy, deceptively cold night ride (wet bulb & layering mistakes)01:06:45 Whitesboro food service plan + kitchen/fridge scouting01:07:54 Locking in March dates & moving Trinity Trio to Sunday01:09:06 Trinity Trio route breakdown: Gateway–Sansom–River Legacy mileage01:09:48 What bike (or e-bike) works? Thanks to Tourism Tasmania, I've been on the ground in Maydena this week for Red Bull Hardline, a race that sits right on the limit of what's possible. The course demanded full commitment all week, and when heavy rain hit on race day, any margin for error vanished. The course crew did everything they could, but it simply wasn't safe for the riders. Even without a race, the riders pushed the limits throughout the week, testing their skills, on one of the most unforgiving tracks in the sport. Afterwards, I sat down with Eliot Jackson, Neko Mulally and Asa Vermette to chat about the week and to break down what really went on: how decisions were made, and why not running the race was the only call possible. So sit back, hit play and check out this Hardline Tasmania post-race show with Eliot Jackson Neko Mulally and special guest, Asa Vermette. You can also watch this episode on YouTube here. Thanks to Tourism Tasmania, I'm on the ground in Maydena this week, riding the trails, soaking up the atmosphere, and bringing you content straight from Red Bull Hardline. After day two of practice, I was invited to host a live show in front of a packed Maydena crowd, where I sat down with three riders taking on Hardline for the very first time, Mikayla Parton, Ryan Gilchrist, and Aaron Gwin. Different backgrounds, different careers, same task ahead of them. We talk honestly about the fear that comes with hitting these features for the first time, how each of them is working through that, and what it takes to go from simply surviving the track to actually riding it at race pace. This is a fun, open, and insightful conversation with three of the best in the sport, recorded live in Tasmania. Thanks to Tourism Tasmania, I'm on the ground in Maydena this week to experience the incredible trail network and to bring you content from Red Bull Hardline. So, following our World Cup style approach, you'll be getting a pre and a post-race show from the event. For today's pre-race show, we're joined by the man behind Maydena Bike Park and Hardline Tasmania, Simon French, alongside racer, local legend and last years rider of the week, Dan Booker. We'll be hearing about changes to the course, sneaky inside lines and what it's really like to ride this beast. We talk about some of the riders we're excited to see on track, wether the world cup racers might be holding back a little to stay safe ahead of the season, and how this track compares to the original Hardline in Wales. It's the first big race of 2026 and there's plenty to discuss. So sit back, hit play and check out this Hardline Tasmania pre-race show with Simon French and Dan Booker. Slovenská cyklistika má nový klenot, ktorý nielenže láme rekordy na tratiach, ale svojou bezprostrednosťou si podmanila aj svet športových fanúšikov. Hosťom najnovšieho vydania podcastu suSPEAK s moderátorskou dvojicou Marek Marušiak a Rasťo Konečný bola aktuálne najlepšia slovenská MTB pretekárka v disciplíne enduro Simona Kuchyňková.Mladá jazdkyňa, ktorá len nedávno získala prestížny kontrakt s Red Bullom, v rozhovore poodhalila zákulisie športu, v ktorom rozhodujú stotiny sekundy a kde strach nemá miesto. Hoci sa dnes rúti dolu kopcami na dvoch kolesách, jej športové korene siahajú k ľadu a mantinelom.Práve hokejové začiatky boli jednou z kľúčových tém debaty, v ktorej Simona Kuchyňková s úsmevom priznala, že na korčuliach bola skôr technickým typom než ostrostrelcom. „Ja som to nevedela, nemala som silu vystreliť. Simona Kuchyňková detailne opísala fenomén známy ako „arm pump”, kedy predlaktia pod náporom vibrácií a neustáleho brzdenia doslova skamenejú.„My brzdíme jedným prstom.
We dug into the data to find out. After a 20-minute head-to-head test between a modern aero setup and a classic steel bike, the results were staggering: The aero setup was 30% more efficient, requiring just 221 watts to outpace a rider pushing 288 watts. In this episode, the Velo tech team breaks down the physics of why "Weight Weenie" upgrades fail where aerodynamics succeed, and how you can find these same "free" watts on your next ride. Also in this episode: The Vingegaard Incident: A deep dive into Jonas Vingegaard's recent crash in Spain involving a "stalker" fan and the reality of pro/fan interactions on open roads. Gravel Suspension Shootout: Is the Lauf leaf-spring fork actually better than the Cane Creek Invert? We answer listener Q&A about upgrading the Salsa Cutthroat. The Leadville Ban: The crew debates LifeTime's decision to ban drop bars at the Leadville Trail 100 MTB. Tech Hot Takes: A defense of the critical take on Pinarello's new Grevil MX mountain bike conversion. Pro Encounters: Lisa and Levy share their own awkward moments with pros in Girona and F1 drivers.

Why do MTB skills feel amazing right after a clinic… and then “disappear”? In this episode, I break down what's really happening inside your brain (neuroscience-based, no fluff, in simple terms) when you learn mountain bike skills:Why your brain deletes new MTB skills (unless you do this)The real reason skills fade: you're stuck in Stage 1 of neuroplasticity Why confidence isn't magic, it's actually something called myelination (and it's simple to build!)Why fear blocks learning: the amygdala rule every MTB rider (and MTB skills coach) should knowYou'll learn how to move from temporary performance to trail-proof skill by understanding the 3 stages of neuroplasticity and how to train in a way that actually sticks.Real progress isn't about talent or bravery. It's about wiring the skill deep enough that it shows up when it matters. In this episode you'll find out how to do that!

We sat down with the founder of Gravity Carolinas, Harrison Bredahl, to discuss his relatively new gravity focused race series that has been taking off here in the southeast. While maybe at the pro UCI level it is dying, us regular folks still do this type of riding day in and day out, and Gravity Carolinas provides an awesome outlet to do it. Harrison is bringing a fresh approach to the sport of MTB racing so listen in to learn more. https://www.gravitycarolinas.com/https://www.instagram.com/gravitycarolinas/
Do you actually need a damper on a gravel bike? Logan Jones-Wilkins joins the show to discuss his massive suspension shootout comparing the Cane Creek Invert, RockShox Rudy, and Fox 32 TC. We break down the winners, the losers, and where the "upside-down" tech actually makes sense. Then, we tackle the controversy of the week: The Leadville Trail 100 MTB drop-bar ban. Josh digs into the archives to see if drop bars truly offer an advantage, or if this rule change is purely aesthetic. Finally, we ask if the new Pinarello Grevil MX is a legitimate race bike or just a way to move overstock frames.

Mountain bike media has always been shaped by the riders, the bikes, and the culture around them. But right now, that landscape is changing faster than ever. Today's guest has seen that shift from the inside. Drew Rohde started his career at Decline, right at the heart of print media, before going on to found the independent mountain bike platform, Loam Wolf. In this episode, Drew and I talk about how he made that jump, what it takes to build sustainable MTB media today, and whether the rise of platforms like Meta and AI content and search puts specialist MTB media at risk. We also dig into what riders are actually asking for, how e-bikes have changed both coverage and audience expectations, and where Drew thinks bikes, and e-bikes in particular, are heading next. This is a conversation about media, bikes, business, and the future of the sport we all care about. So sit back, hit play, and enjoy this episode with Drew Rohde. Riding alone can feel surprisingly hard, especially for MTB beginners, often more so for women, but sometimes even for experienced mountain bikers. Fear, lack of focus, and constant “what if” thoughts often have a lot to do with how the brain reacts when we lose external support. This episode is especially helpful if you want practical, science-based confidence strategies. In this episode, we break down:why solo MTB rides trigger fear and overthinkinghow self-talk influences confidence and riding performancehow third-person self-talk (Illeism) can calm the nervous system (and why it works based on neuroscience) how to make solo rides safer and more effectivepractical strategies for solo ride safety and preparationYou'll learn how to:ride alone with more confidencestrategies for guided self-talk reduce fear on solo mountain bike ridesstay focused without external validationbuild trust in yourselfStart my free on-bike balance course designed specifically for mountain bikers 35+: https://roxybike.podia.com/sign-me-up For the Ladies 40+: Sign up for free MTB + Menopause Tips: https://roxybike.podia.com/menopause-tips Train your strength and coordination at home (course specifically for mountain bikers 35+): https://roxybike.podia.com/building-basics-introduction-to-strength-coordinationSupport this podcast by becoming a patron or buying me a coffee
show notes: Quick recap of last year and what's coming up: East Texas Showdown 400, had to get plucked out of the woods at night. Smashed my rear derailleur Capital City gravel race series. I won both a flatbar and a singlespeed gravel races! Then I cracked my magnesium frame. Got it replaced with a Niner aluminum frame. Why metal frames can be a better choice than carbon for gravel and MTB. Quick review of who I am and why you might like this show! How we swam 22 miles nonstop across Lake Tahoe Back to Year in review: Kai's magnesium bike is getting warrantied, but he ordered a State carbon frame to race Pro on in the meantime. We bikepacked 200 miles across the Texas Hill Country and camped on an island overnight. Waited patiently for several years and CARBON WHEELS APPEARED! But they are hookless. Why hookless are dangerous. Kai’s State Carbon frame and crazy downtube storage Amazfit T-Rex 3 vs. Garmin Fenix Stretch out purchases to strategically keep you motivated The Zen of things that just show up. How I did a self-supported gravel Ironman. Why half-ironman training year-round is probably the best fitness plan for health and longevity. High volume training is only successful if you think about how to make the different sports work for each other instead of against. Gravel bike with aerobars allows you to train Ironman level on safer roads How I came up with distances for the gravel Ironman Emily’s getting back into running for health reasons How gravel bikes are evolving just like Tri bikes did 20 years ago. How Minimalism has evolved into the Slow Movement. How to use the timing bezel on a diving watch to do training intervals. How to use the timing bezel for fueling every 15 minutes! The history of "double wristing" and it's REAL! Lot's of people do it. Why I have a great use for real analog diving watches with rotating diving timre bezels How people react and view YouTube videos differently than long form audio. What actually started WW2.

In today's episode, we dig into one of the most powerful (and most misunderstood) features of the human brain: your built in negativity bias. You'll learn:why your brain holds onto negative experienceswhy “reality” is filtered, not objectivehow the Reticular Activating System (RAS) decides what you noticeand how mountain biking is a surprisingly effective tool for retraining your attentionIf you've ever wondered why one bad ride, one mistake, or one negative comment sticks in your mind far longer than all the good stuff combined, this episode will finally help you make sense of it and CHANGE it! You'll learn practical, science-backed tools to start training your attention today (on the trail and in daily life) so your brain becomes better at noticing possibilities, capabilities, and micro-wins instead of dangers and mistakes to build a more supportive inner environment. We explore:Baumeister et al., “Bad Is Stronger Than Good”the fast subcortical threat pathway that triggers your amygdala before you can thinkwhy positive moments fade unless you consciously reinforce themhow attention literally rewires your neural pathway Hebbian learningand why your RAS acts like a “bouncer,” filtering your world based on what you engage with✨ Patreon Bonus: Patrons get a free downloadable cheat sheet that summarizes all tools and concepts from today's episode.Join here to get it PLUS other exclusive perks: https://www.patreon.com/c/rideandinspire This episode is not sponsored.
