Dialogue No. 2: The Research Ethics Board But it is Research? Creative Practice Research and the Ethics of Surprise March 14-Room 291, Emily Carr North Building This dialogue will explore a variety of perspectives on creative practice research and the vital contribution of art and design communities to larger national and international transformations of knowledge practice in areas of scholarship, teaching and learning, performance, communication, and social critique. Supported by the VP Academic/Provost’s office and the Emily Carr Research Ethics Board, the panel endeavors to continue an important conversation about Emily Carr’s unique culture of research and innovation, and to generate lively debate among faculty, students, and staff. Presented by Lois Klassen, Glen Lowry, Deborah Shackleton, and Julie York. The Emily Carr Provost’s Office is pleased to present ReMaking ReSearch, a series of dialogues on emerging research practices at Emily Carr and in the fields of art and design more broadly. This series will lead up to a major symposium on Research in Art and Design that Emily Carr will host in the fall of 2012, in partnership with the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD). It is intended as an opportunity to discuss the current state and future agenda for “research” at Emily Carr and to generate some of the key themes, questions, and issues that will animate the symposium in the fall.

Dialogue No. 1 Charlie Cannon Waste for Life: Materials Research and Social Practices Charlie Cannon, Associate Professor at Rhode Island School of Design and co-founder the Innovation Studio at RISD, confronts pressing issues of our day through interdisciplinary collaboration, social entrepreneurship and design research. The studio’s projects have been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Fund, the RISD Research Foundation and the City of Denver. Cannon is also co-founder of /LOCAL Architecture Research Design, a design firm in Providence, Rhode Island that focuses on projects that develop and sustain local communities.
