Ireland has the potential to be a major hub for global aquaculture innovation and scale-up, with 76 Irish companies now generating an estimated €165 million in value and supporting more than 900 full-time jobs, according to Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Ireland's Seafood Development Agency. Announcing the opening of applications for the 2026 Aquatech Innovation Studio, AquaScale, which this year will focus on supporting established companies scale up, BIM's Aquatech Business Manager, Damien Toner, said it will build on the proven success of the BIM Aquatech Innovation Studio platform, which has supported 66 start-ups and helped raise over €28 million in investment since 2018. The intensive three-day programme will take place in Galway from 26–28 May 2026, with applications closing on 31 March 2026. According to Damien Toner, AquaScale represents a strategic evolution, designed specifically for companies already active in the market. The programme is targeting applications from Aquatech enterprises preparing for their next phase of commercial growth. He said, "Ireland's Aquatech sector continues to demonstrate innovation and growing technical depth. With 76 companies now generating an estimated €165 million in value and supporting more than 900 full-time jobs, the sector is steadily strengthening its economic and scientific contribution both nationally and internationally. "As global demand for sustainable aquaculture production accelerates – particularly in high-value sectors such as salmon and shrimp – Ireland is well positioned to supply advanced technologies and expertise to international markets. Through initiatives like AquaScale, BIM is focused on ensuring that ambitious Irish Aquatech companies have the strategic clarity and commercial capability required to compete and scale globally." Unlike early-stage accelerators, AquaScale is not a pitch competition. Instead, it is a focused, market-driven intervention aimed at strengthening strategic clarity, commercial positioning, and execution readiness for expansion. The 2026 programme will once again be delivered in partnership with leading global aquaculture accelerator Hatch Blue. The BIM Aquatech Innovation Studio has laid a strong foundation for aquaculture innovation in Ireland. "AquaScale signals that we are ready for the next level," said Jessica Giannoumis, Hatch Blue's Aquatech Community Manager for Ireland. "Designed for commercially active companies preparing to expand, the programme strengthens strategic focus, commercial positioning, and execution readiness. AquaScale supports Ireland's most ambitious aquatech companies as they deepen market traction and scale more deliberately in international markets." AquaScale forms part of BIM's Aquatech Development Programme and is supported by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (2021–2027). Programme Objectives AquaScale aims to: — Position Ireland as a launchpad for globally competitive aquaculture scale-ups. — Accelerate commercial traction and reduce risk for companies entering new markets. — Strengthen go-to-market, competitive positioning, and expansion strategies. What Makes AquaScale Different — Market-first, not tech-first. — Strategic clarity and execution support — not a pitch programme. — Designed for companies already selling and preparing to scale. — Equity-free, no participation fee, with a limited cohort of 8–10 companies. Who Should Apply? AquaScale is designed for companies that: — Are already active in the market with customers, pilots, or revenue. — Are preparing for expansion or market refocus (not first market entry). — Need honest, peer-level strategic discussion and rigorous commercial pressure-testing. By focusing on scale-stage challenges, AquaScale reflects BIM's commitment to strengthening Ireland's aquaculture innovation ecosystem — not only supporting new ventures, but ensuring high-potential companies are equipped to compete and grow internationally. Applications are now op...
A software engineer grabbed a random word from a dictionary – "beehive" – and within hours designed an algorithm that saved his company millions. While his colleagues were working harder, he was thinking differently. This breakthrough didn't come from luck. It came from lateral thinking – a systematic approach to finding solutions hiding in plain sight. I'm Phil McKinney and welcome to my Innovation Studio. In this episode, we will cover the lateral thinking framework. Not theory – a practical, step-by-step system you can use immediately. You'll try your first technique in the next five minutes. By the end of this episode, you'll have four specific techniques that transform how you approach problems, plus practice methods that make mastery inevitable. And hey, if this kind of framework thinking resonates with you, then hit that subscribe and like button. It helps us with the algorithm. If you want to dive deeper into these topics, then subscribe to my Studio Notes on Substack. Plus, if you know someone who might find this episode useful, feel free to share it with them. Alright, let's dive in. Here's what most people miss: breakthrough solutions don't come from thinking faster or working longer. They come from thinking differently. While everyone else improves using existing tools and approaches, lateral thinkers reimagine entire problems. For example, Southwest Airlines didn't create a better airline experience - they reimagined air travel as mass transportation. Tesla didn't build superior cars - they re-conceptualized personal mobility around sustainable energy. These companies succeeded by approaching familiar challenges through completely different frameworks. The question isn't whether you're smart enough to solve problems - you are. The question is whether you're willing to disrupt your thinking patterns to discover solutions that conventional logical approaches miss. But here's where most people get lateral thinking completely wrong, and understanding this distinction will determine whether you develop breakthrough capabilities or just become better at brainstorming... Lateral Thinking vs Linear Thinking What is the distinction between Linear and Lateral thinking? When faced with a problem, most people use linear thinking - they analyze what's wrong and optimize within existing frameworks. It's logical, sequential, and focuses on improving current approaches. Lateral thinking does something completely different. Instead of improving what exists, it changes how you perceive the problem itself. Let me illustrate the difference with a single example. When customers complained about long wait times, linear thinking said, "Make the elevators faster." Lateral thinking asked, "What if waiting wasn't the real problem?" The solution? Install mirrors next to elevators. People stopped complaining because they were distracted, not because waits got shorter. Linear thinking improved the elevator. Lateral thinking eliminated the problem by changing what the problem actually was. This is Dr. Edward de Bono's systematic method for shifting perceptions entirely. As he explained: "To find breakthrough solutions, change where you're looking, not just how hard you're looking." The challenge isn't that people lack creativity - it's that they don't have systematic methods for breaking free from mental patterns that limit them. Lateral thinking offers specific techniques for generating what de Bono referred to as "movement" in thinking. When everyone in your industry follows similar approaches, breakthrough opportunities emerge for those who think differently. While competitors optimize existing methods, lateral thinkers discover entirely different approaches. This operates on four distinct levels that build systematic capabilities. The progression from beginner to expert follows a pattern that will surprise you... The Four-Level Mastery Framework The lateral thinking framework has four progressive levels. Here's a quick overview of each so you have context before we explore them each in detail. Level One: Suspend Judgment and Break Patterns – Your foundation level. You'll learn to deliberately disrupt automatic thinking responses and embrace ideas that seem absurd. This creates the mental environment where breakthrough solutions can emerge. Level Two: Random Input for Forced Connections – Intermediate level. You'll use systematic provocations to force your brain into unfamiliar territory. This isn't random creativity - it's controlled disruption that bypasses your brain's tendency to look for solutions in familiar places. Level Three: Challenge Sacred Assumptions – Advanced thinking. You'll systematically examine and reverse the fundamental premises everyone else takes for granted. This is about creating "movement" in thinking by making the familiar strange. Level Four: Embrace Deliberate Absurdity – Expert level. You'll find breakthrough solutions by seriously exploring ideas that seem obviously wrong. This isn't about being silly - it's about using absurdity as a systematic tool for discovering hidden insights. Quick Demo: Before we dive deep, let's try one technique. Think of any current challenge you're facing. Now grab the nearest object - a pen, coffee mug, your phone, anything. Spend thirty seconds asking: "How is this object like my problem?" Force weird connections. A pen runs out of ink - maybe your problem needs fresh input. A coffee mug holds liquid - maybe your challenge needs a container or boundary. Your phone connects people - maybe your issue needs better communication. Notice how this random object sparked different angles? That's lateral thinking in action. This was just a taste - each level has systematic techniques that amplify this effect. Here's what's powerful about this progression. You don't need to master all four levels to see dramatic results. Level One techniques alone can solve problems that teams couldn't crack in weeks. But when you combine all four levels, you develop innovation confidence – the unshakeable belief that creative solutions exist for every problem. But the real power comes from developing what I call "innovation confidence" - the systematic ability to find creative solutions when conventional approaches hit dead ends. Ready to transform how you approach problems? Let's start with Level One, but I need to warn you - what seems like the simplest technique often produces the most unexpected breakthroughs... Level 1: Pattern Breaking Techniques Your brain is a pattern-recognition machine. It looks for familiar situations and applies solutions that worked before. This efficiency usually helps, but when facing new problems, these patterns become invisible barriers that prevent you from finding new solutions. Level One breaks these patterns systematically. Here are three specific techniques: Technique One: Change Your Routine Disrupt both your thinking environment and daily patterns. Your brain associates thought patterns with specific locations and routines. If you always brainstorm in the same conference room, you'll have the same types of ideas. Southwest Airlines used this brilliantly. Instead of studying airlines, they studied bus transportation. This environmental change broke their mental patterns about air travel. They discovered point-to-point routes, eliminated assigned seating, removed meal service, and focused on quick turnarounds. Every innovation came from thinking like a bus company, not an airline. You can apply this by changing where you tackle problems, taking different routes to work, using your non-dominant hand for simple tasks, or changing when you tackle challenging problems during the day. These disruptions create mental flexibility that carries over into creative problem-solving. Technique Two: Question Core Assumptions Write down three assumptions about your current challenge. Then ask, "What if the opposite were true?" Most problems have hidden assumptions we never examine. Example: Improving customer service. Your assumptions might be that customers want fast responses, prefer human interaction, and contact you when problems occur. Consider this: What if customers prefer thoughtful responses over fast ones? What if they choose good self-service over poor human service? What if you could help customers before problems arise? Suddenly, you're thinking about proactive support, comprehensive self-service resources, and quality over speed. These insights come from questioning assumptions everyone else accepts. Technique Three: Time-Box the Impossible Spend ten minutes seriously considering solutions that seem impossible. Often "impossible" means "we haven't figured out how yet." Amazon's same-day delivery seemed impossible until they reimagined warehousing. SpaceX's reusable rockets seemed impossible until they questioned whether rockets had to be disposable. What seems impossible in your field might just need different thinking. Pattern breaking works because it forces your brain out of automatic mode. But what happens when you want to accelerate this process dramatically? The next level introduces something so counterintuitive that it seems almost absurd - until you see what it can create... Level 2: Random Input Technique Level Two introduces controlled randomness that forces breakthrough connections. You'll learn to make your brain create links it would never make naturally. This technique created Post-it Notes at 3M. A scientist had a "failed" adhesive that barely stuck. A colleague needed better bookmarks for his church hymnal. The random collision of these unrelated problems sparked repositionable sticky notes – now generating over a billion dollars annually. The Process: Step One: Define your challenge in one clear sentence. Be specific. Step Two: Generate random input. Open a book to a random page and point to a word, use online random word generators, or grab three random objects around you. Step Three: Force connections. Spend fifteen minutes finding ways to connect your random input to your challenge. No connection is too weird. The stranger, the better. Real Example: Challenge: "Reduce employee turnover" Random word: "Garden" Connections: Gardens need regular watering – employees need consistent check-ins. Gardens grow better with proper soil – work environment matters. Gardens require pruning dead parts – eliminate toxic behaviors. Gardens have seasonal cycles – adjust expectations based on business rhythms. These random connections lead to employee development programs, environmental improvements, cultural changes, and seasonal workflow adjustments. None of these insights came from traditional HR thinking. Why This Works: Random inputs bypass your brain's tendency to look for solutions in familiar places. They force neural pathways that wouldn't connect naturally. Breakthrough solutions often hide in unexpected combinations. Which level is clicking for you so far? Pattern breaking or random connections? Both build the foundation for what's coming next... Before we go deeper, let's practice what you just learned. Pick that same challenge from earlier. Now try a different Level 2 approach: grab any book, open to a random page, and point to a word. Spend one minute connecting that word to your problem. What new angles emerge? This compound effect - layering techniques - is where breakthrough thinking lives. The Random Input Technique accelerates breakthrough thinking by forcing neural pathways that wouldn't connect naturally. But there's something even more powerful waiting in Level Three—a method that challenges the very foundations everyone else builds their solutions on... Level 3: Challenge Sacred Assumptions Level Three challenges the assumptions that others take for granted. This is where lateral thinking becomes powerful – you'll start seeing opportunities that are invisible to your competition. Netflix used "What If" thinking to transform entertainment. In 2007, they dominated DVD-by-mail with seven million subscribers. The industry assumed customers wanted to own movies, physical media provided the best quality, and broadband was too slow for streaming. Netflix challenged every assumption: What if customers didn't want to own movies? What if delivery delays were barriers, not services? What if broadband became fast enough? Most radically: What if we cannibalized our own successful business? These questions led to streaming launch in 2007. Today, Netflix has over 240 million subscribers, generating $31 billion annually, while competitors who didn't question assumptions have disappeared. The Process: Step One: List your core assumptions. These are things "everyone knows" are true in your field. Step Two: Reverse each assumption completely. If customers want speed, ask "What if they preferred thoughtful slowness?" If more choices seem better, ask "What if fewer choices improved satisfaction?" Step Three: Push to extremes and chain your questions. What if this took ten times longer? What if resources were unlimited? Take your best scenario and ask What If about that result. Keep pushing until you reach uncomfortable territory. The biggest breakthroughs come when you challenge assumptions that feel fundamental– like rules. "What If" thinking reveals hidden opportunities within your assumptions. However, the most counterintuitive breakthroughs often come from an approach that seems to violate common sense entirely, which brings us to the expert level that turns logic on its head... Level 4: Embrace Deliberate Absurdity Level Four is expert-level lateral thinking that embraces deliberate absurdity. You'll find breakthrough solutions by doing exactly the opposite of what seems logical. It sounds counterintuitive because it is – and that's precisely why it works. IKEA revolutionized furniture by providing what seemed like terrible customer service. Instead of delivering assembled furniture, they made customers assemble it themselves. This reversed every industry assumption: customers would work instead of receiving convenience, invest time instead of getting immediate use. The "backward" approach revealed hidden benefits: dramatically reduced shipping costs, minimal storage requirements, lower prices, and, surprisingly, customer satisfaction from successful assembly. What seemed like terrible service became a competitive advantage. IKEA now generates €38 billion annually. The Process: Step One: List how your industry typically handles similar challenges. Write down the conventional wisdom everyone follows. Step Two: Reverse each approach completely. If your industry emphasizes speed, consider slowness. If everyone wants more features, consider fewer features. Step Three: Explore the reversals seriously. Don't dismiss opposites immediately. Look for unexpected advantages in seemingly wrong approaches. Sometimes, the best solutions hide behind what appear to be terrible ideas. Real Example: Dollar Shave Club did opposite thinking with razors. While the industry focused on premium features, advanced technology, and retail partnerships, Dollar Shave Club eliminated fancy features, used simple razors, and bypassed retail entirely by offering direct subscriptions. Result: While major brands competed on blade technology and premium positioning, Dollar Shave Club captured a massive market share by doing everything the industry thought was wrong—and sold for $1 billion. The most counterintuitive solutions often hide in directions that make everyone else uncomfortable. Don't just think outside the box – think in the opposite direction of the box. You now have four levels of lateral thinking techniques. Do you know hat separates people who learn these concepts from those who actually master them? A system of practice that transforms theory into instinctive capability... The Practice System That Guarantees Mastery The following two practice approaches transform lateral thinking from a conceptual understanding into an instinctive skill. Use them solo for breakthrough thinking or with colleagues for collaborative problem-solving. Approach One: The Assumption-Breaking Generator This combines three powerful techniques for compound breakthroughs. Start with a real problem you're facing. Step 1: List three core assumptions about your challenge - things "everyone knows" are true. Step 2: Reverse each assumption completely. What if the opposite were true? Step 3: Grab a random word (book, phone, ask someone) and force connections between that word and your reversed assumptions. Example: Challenge = "Improve customer service" Assumptions: Customers want speed, prefer humans, contact us when problems occur. Reversals: What if customers want thoughtfulness over speed? What if they prefer self-service? What if we helped before problems arise? Random word: "Garden" → Gardens need seasonal care = maybe customers need different support at different business cycles. This creates insights you'd never reach with single techniques alone. Approach Two: The Escalation Challenge Perfect for pushing "What If" thinking to breakthrough levels. Start with a real problem. Propose a "What If" scenario addressing it. Keep pushing ideas to more extreme territory until you say, "That's impossible... but what if we could?" Example: "What if customers never waited?" → "What if they were served before arriving?" → "What if we predicted needs before customers knew them?" Suddenly, you're thinking about predictive analytics and anticipatory service. Practice Tips: Use real problems, not theoretical ones Start with 15-minute sessions The more ridiculous ideas become, the better Document insights immediately Practice daily for compound skill building Embrace absurdity – breakthroughs hide in impossible ideas Your Practice Plan: Choose one approach. Apply it to a current challenge. Spend 15 minutes. Document what emerges. Try another approach tomorrow. Build lateral thinking into your regular problem-solving routine. Practice transforms these techniques from interesting concepts into instinctive capabilities. The more you use them, the more naturally you'll see solutions others miss. Conclusion Now comes the moment of truth. You have the complete framework, but what you do next will determine whether this becomes just another interesting video you watched, or the beginning of a fundamental shift in how you approach every challenge you'll ever face. Companies investing in lateral thinking see documented ROI from 5:1 to 20:1. Individual professionals show 300% increases in viable ideas. But the real value is personal transformation – becoming someone who consistently finds breakthrough solutions. Your assignment is simple: pick one problem you're currently facing and apply one technique right now. Not later – right now. Start with whichever level feels most accessible. Document what happens. Share your discoveries in the comments. What patterns did you break? What random connections led to insights? What assumptions proved wrong? Your examples help others see possibilities and build our breakthrough thinking community.
BIM has once again partnered with aquaculture accelerator Hatch Blue to deliver the 2025 Aquatech Innovation Studio - a free, intensive six-day programme supporting early-stage aquatech companies through expert mentoring, investor readiness training, and technical development. Have you ever wondered what it takes to create something that truly lasts? What's the secret to building something that doesn't just survive but grows stronger for decades in our always-changing digital world? The answer might surprise you. It's not about fancy equipment or perfect production. It's not even about having all the answers when you start. It begins with a simple promise to pay it forward. The Bathroom Session That Started It All March 2005. A hotel bathroom at the Marriott in Phoenix. That's where I sat with a basic microphone, nervously recording the first episode of what would become Killer Innovations. The bathroom's natural echo was the only "sound engineering" I had—nothing like the studio we have today. Why a podcast? Why innovation? And honestly: why a bathroom? These questions have followed me for years, and as we launch Season 20—officially making the show the longest continuously produced podcast in history—it feels right to finally share the whole story with you. But first, let me ask you something: Has someone ever believed in you so deeply that it completely changed your path? The Debt That Can Never Be Repaid For me, that person was Bob Davis. As my mentor, Bob spent countless hours guiding me, challenging me, and opening doors I didn't know existed. During one of our regular talks, feeling incredibly grateful, I asked him how I could possibly repay him for everything he'd done. Bob's answer wasn't what I expected. He laughed—that hearty, knowing laugh of his—and said something that would change the direction of my life: "There's no way you can pay me back. You have to pay it forward." This wasn't gentle advice. It was a responsibility placed squarely on my shoulders. But how could I possibly live up to such a big obligation? What did "paying it forward" actually look like in real life? The answer would come in ways I couldn't have imagined, shaped by voices that had influenced my own thinking. Finding My Voice in Others Long before podcasts existed, I followed Earl Nightingale's monthly "Insight" audio cassette subscription. Earl showed me how spoken words could do more than just inform—they could change lives. Could I create something similar in this new thing called "podcasting"? The term itself was barely a few months old. The first true podcast "show" was created in August 2004 by Adam Curry when he launched his daily show, "Source Code." Most people still listened to radio or CDs. Podcast directories didn't exist. Subscription models were foreign concepts. Tools to create and publish podcasts did not exist. The landscape was new, untested, and mostly unknown. It was perfect. But a big question remained: Would anyone actually listen? What I didn't realize then was that this uncertainty—this feeling of not knowing—would become one of the show's greatest strengths. An Unexpected Ally The early days were quiet. Recording weekly episodes felt like talking to no one. Until one day, something unexpected happened. Adam Curry—the very person who had created the first podcast show—mentioned Killer Innovations on his own show. That single mention changed everything. Suddenly, this small experiment in paying it forward found an audience. People began listening, responding, talking back. But as our listeners grew, so did a nagging question: What insights could I possibly share that would be worth people's time? What principles could truly help others navigate the complex world of innovation? The Five Truths That Emerged Over hundreds of episodes, thousands of conversations, and countless moments of thinking deeply, patterns began to emerge. Not just in how successful innovations were created, but in how the show itself grew. These weren't principles I set out to discover. They revealed themselves gradually, persistently, until they became impossible to ignore: Innovation requires intention. Big ideas rarely happen by accident or luck. The most successful innovators deliberately create spaces and habits that encourage creative thinking and problem-solving. Failure is an essential teacher. Our greatest lessons often come from our biggest failures, not our successes. Embracing failure as a normal part of the innovation process—rather than something to fear—unlocks growth and insights we'd miss otherwise. Diversity drives creativity. The most powerful innovations come from mixing different viewpoints, experiences, and knowledge areas. Building diverse teams is the best way to break through old thinking patterns. Innovation is a learnable skill. While some people might seem naturally creative, the basic skills of innovation can be developed through practice. With the right methods and consistent effort, anyone can get better at innovation. Human-centered approaches work best. Technology and processes matter, but innovations that truly change lives must be based on human needs, behaviors, and feelings. Starting with deep understanding of the people you're serving leads to solutions that don't just work technically but make a real difference. These five truths have guided not just what we talk about but how the show itself has grown. But here's what I've never publicly shared before: these principles weren't abstract theories I studied from a distance. Each one came from my own painful lessons, stubborn mistakes, and humbling realizations. From Bathroom to Broadcast Studio As the show's reach grew, so did our production capabilities—though not without growing pains. From that hotel bathroom, we moved to makeshift home setups, then to increasingly better equipment. Eight years ago, we built our first full professional recording studio, a space designed specifically for exploring innovation in all its forms. Now, we're in the middle of our biggest expansion yet: transforming our recording space into a complete Innovation Studio—a place not just for talking about innovation, but for showing it in action. Each upgrade brought technical challenges. Each improvement required learning new skills. Each evolution demanded letting go of what was comfortable for what was possible. Sound familiar? It's the innovation journey itself, played out in real time. But through it all, one question kept coming back: What makes this show different from the countless others that have come and gone? The Secret Ingredient The answer became clear only with time: it's you. You've been the secret ingredient all along. Your emails challenging my thinking. Your stories showing principles in action. Your questions pushing me to explore new territories. In recent months, we've seen a remarkable growth in our community. New listeners discovering two decades of insights. Long-time supporters returning with fresh perspectives. This growth has made me think deeply: What responsibility comes with being the longest-running show in our medium? What does Season 20 demand of us after all we've learned? The answer lies in returning to that original promise made to Bob Davis, but with a depth and maturity that only experience can bring. Season 20: The Promise Renewed As we launch Season 20, I'm both humbled by what we've accomplished and excited by what lies ahead. This milestone wasn't something I planned—it's simply the result of showing up for you week after week, year after year, honoring that original promise to pay forward what I've been given. Season 20 represents a renewed commitment to that promise. We'll focus more on innovation leadership skills, creativity, and thinking methods you can use right away. We'll host more live sessions from our Innovation Studio, creating experiences that bring innovation principles to life. To deliver on this vision and continue raising the bar on quality, we need your help. Like any worthwhile innovation, this next chapter requires both creative vision and practical resources to make it real. Supporting Our Shared Journey As the show grows, so do our costs. We need equipment, software, and most importantly, a team of talented people who help with research, production, and editing. Every dollar from supporters goes directly into these expenses—not into my pocket. Your support makes it possible to deliver quality content every week. For those who've found value in our journey together, I've created a way for you to become an even more important part of this community through Patreon. Your support helps fund the team that makes the show possible and ensures we can continue delivering quality innovation insights for years to come. In return, you'll receive exclusive content, early access to episodes, and other special benefits that enhance your innovation practice. Visit patreon.com/philmckinney to learn more about joining this next phase of our journey. The Question That Drives Us Forward Looking back at that first recording in a Phoenix hotel bathroom, I'm struck by how much has changed—and how much remains the same. The technology has evolved. Our understanding has deepened. Our community has grown beyond anything I could have imagined. But the basic question that drove that very first episode still drives us today: How can we help each other become better innovators? As we enter our third decade together, I'm filled with the same curiosity and enthusiasm that drove that very first recording—maybe even more so, as I've seen the amazing power of shared knowledge and learning together. To you, whether you've been with us since those early, rough episodes or just found us recently—thank you. You are the reason we continue this journey, and your pursuit of meaningful innovation inspires everything we create. But I'm left with one final question, perhaps the most important one of all: What innovation challenges are you facing right now? What stands between you and your next breakthrough? Share your thoughts in the comments below or reach out directly through our website. Your questions and insights might inspire our next exploration together. I'd also love to connect with you on LinkedIn. As I receive hundreds of connection requests monthly, please mention that you're a listener of the podcast when sending your request, and I'll be sure to accept it. After all, the greatest innovations often begin with the simplest of questions—asked at just the right moment. Here's to the next chapter in our ongoing exploration of what makes innovation truly "killer"—impactful, lasting, and transformative. The best is yet to come.
Ever wondered what it takes to build a space that sparks creativity and enables innovation? I've been on a journey transforming my studio from a simple podcast recording room into a full-fledged innovation workspace, and I'm excited to share the progress with you. Five months ago, we embarked on a complete teardown and reconstruction. While we missed our January completion target, the transformation has been remarkable. We've installed hardwood flooring (goodbye, dust allergies!), added professional-grade tool organization with Husky cabinets, and installed a suspended lighting grid that would make theater technicians proud. The studio now features dedicated zones for different types of creative work. There's a 3D printing station with the constantly-running Bamboo Labs X1 Carbon, professional audio and video equipment storage, and flexible workspace areas for prototyping and ideation sessions. Everything is designed to keep the floor clear and maximize the space's versatility. Some challenges have emerged along the way – like the unexpected acoustic effects of the hardwood flooring (hello, echo!) and the adventure of hoisting heavy tool cabinets above the garage with a man lift (don't tell my wife!). We're still working on sound suppression solutions and evaluating options for a collaboration display wall. Want to see how it all comes together? Check out the full video tour where I dive into the details of each upgrade and share the thinking behind the design decisions. You'll get an inside look at the professional-grade lighting grid installation, the cable management solutions, and even some fresh 3D prints hot off the printer. If you're interested in innovation, making, or creating your own creative workspace, consider supporting the channel by becoming a member. You'll get exclusive content, live stream invites, and early access to videos. Plus, you might even get a chance to collaborate on prototyping your own ideas in the studio. Aquatech is the application of technologies to the growing of seafood to make it more predictable, reliable and safe. BIM the body that promotes the seafood sector has launched a new ‘innovation studio' to promote Aquatech and the so-called “blue economy”. Caroline Bocquel is the Chief Executive of BIM
With innovation fast-evolving, the terms innovation lab and innovation studio are often thrown around interchangeably, especially in Silicon Valley. However, despite their seemingly similar purposes, these two entities serve distinct roles in the journey from idea to implementation. Understanding their nuances can help organizations choose the right approach for their goals. What is an Innovation Studio? Ideas take shape in an innovation studio and become tangible products or services. Studios focus on transforming concepts into reality with clear deliverables. They typically adopt a design-centric approach, making them creative allies in product development. Key characteristics of an innovation studio include: Focused Product Development: Studios concentrate on developing and launching new products or services, integrating seamlessly into existing business processes. Design-Centric Approach: They use a design-driven methodology to solve problems, ensuring that the end product is functional and aesthetically pleasing. Small to Medium Teams: Innovation studios often operate with small to medium-sized teams, allowing agility and swift iterations. What is an Innovation Lab? In contrast, an innovation lab constantly pushes the boundaries of what's possible, serving as a playground for exploration. Labs dive into uncharted territories, experimenting with ideas that could redefine industries. Key characteristics of an innovation lab include: Experimental Freedom: Labs function independently from immediate business objectives, offering a safe space for radical experimentation and breakthroughs. Long-Term Focus: Unlike studios, labs are not tied to specific products or services but aim for long-term exploration, often looking three to eight years into the future. Significant Resources: Innovation labs typically require substantial investment in people, money, and ecosystem support, given the scope of their exploratory activities. Innovation Studio vs. Innovation Lab: Which One Do You Need? Deciding between an innovation studio and an innovation lab depends on your organization's goals and resources. An innovation studio is your best bet if you want to develop and launch a product with clear deliverables. It's about taking ideas from concept to market with precision. On the other hand, if your goal is to explore new technologies or business models without the pressure of immediate returns, an innovation lab provides the space and resources to experiment freely. Real-World Examples To put things into perspective, consider some real-world examples: Innovation Labs: Amazon Lab126, HP Labs, and IBM Research are renowned for their deep exploratory work, often leading to groundbreaking innovations that shape entire industries. Innovation Studios: IDEO, Frog Design, and Red Design are leaders in the innovation studio space, known for transforming creative ideas into market-ready products. Conclusion Both innovation labs and innovation studios play crucial roles in the innovation ecosystem, but they cater to different needs. Whether you need a structured approach to bring a product to market or a space to explore revolutionary ideas, understanding the difference between an innovation lab and an innovation studio will ensure you choose the right path for your organization's innovation journey.

OSF HealthCare stands as a model health system for those who want to do innovation right. One of the defining characteristics of the Peoria, Illinois-based system is how it aligns innovation with operations for everyone – all 24,000 employees across 159 locations, including 16 hospitals.Becky Buchen is responsible for driving innovation at OSF HealthCare. As SVP of Innovation Operations she works to engage and educate people on the innovation process, leveraging the eco-system for innovation built at OSF, including simulation, analytics, OSF Ventures, Innovation Studio, Digital Innovation Development and Performance Improvement.Becky's background in performance improvement has been a major influence in OSF HealthCare's approach to innovation. Prior to her role leading innovation, she served as VP of Performance Improvement where she focused on implementing methodologies to monitor, assess and improve patient experience, patient outcomes, and overall operations. In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Becky talked to Keith Figlioli about how OSF HealthCare formalized its vision for innovation more than a decade ago and the thoughtful approach to ensuring that it would be fully integrated – not simply a “bolt on.” The goal was to truly make an impact and transform how care was delivered across the organization, and to do so, OSF HealthCare recognized that it had to apply the same level of rigor for exploring, testing and measuring innovation initiatives as it historically had to performance improvement. In her conversation with Keith, Becky discussed specifics about OSF HealthCare's approach to innovation that both digital health entrepreneurs and other health systems can learn from. Some of the topics they discussed include:Integrating innovation into culture. Perhaps the most visible example of OSF HealthCare's commitment to integrating innovation into every aspect of its operations is the physical footprint. At its main campus, OSF HealthCare has an entire building dedicated to innovation, including two floors built for simulation, allowing clinicians to test and understand new approaches in a safe space, two floors housing its healthcare analytics division, and much more. What health systems are getting wrong (and right). To approach innovation successfully, Becky says health systems need to first have a fundamental understanding of the problems they're trying to solve. She warned of dedicating resources towards solutions that are looking for problems. OSF HealthCare learned to avoid this trap early, but Becky says it's still an area of caution for some systems. She talked about how critical it is to pick problems that are big enough to make a significant impact when they're solved in new and different ways.Retooling and reskilling due to artificial intelligence. Becky talked about the healthcare industry being “data rich and information poor,” and described efforts to centralize data and improve data quality as a critical step to driving value from innovation. While tools like those being explored with generative AI will ultimately allow healthcare organizations to operate more efficiently, data quality and proper governance are essential to establish first. And after that, healthcare organizations should be thinking about how they will need to retool and retrain frontline operators and clinicians. To hear Becky and Keith discuss these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.
Creating an innovation studio is essential for fostering creativity, developing ideas, and transforming concepts into reality. Whether you're an inventor, a designer, or a creative professional, having a dedicated space for your work is crucial. In this episode, we'll walk you through building your innovation studio, inspired by my experience setting up a multifunctional space that caters to various aspects of innovation. The Importance of a Dedicated Space Your innovation studio doesn't need to be a grand space; it can be as simple as a corner in your bedroom or a small office. What's important is having a dedicated area to focus solely on your creative endeavors. When I first started, my studio was a small desk in the master bedroom. Over time, it evolved into a 1200-square-foot space designed to meet my needs. A dedicated innovation studio allows you to create an environment conducive to your workflow. Whether recording a podcast, designing a prototype, or brainstorming ideas, your studio should be where creativity flows freely. Designing Your Innovation Studio When designing your innovation studio, consider the different activities you'll conduct in the space. My studio, for example, is divided into several zones, each with a specific purpose: Audio and Video Production Zone: We optimized this area for recording podcasts and YouTube videos. It features sound suppression materials, custom-built tuning panels, and suspended lighting to ensure the best audio and visual quality. Prototyping Zone: Equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and other tools, this zone is where I bring ideas to life. Whether I'm building rough prototypes for startups or developing my concepts, I designed this space to facilitate hands-on innovation. Zoom Collaboration Zone: As virtual meetings have become a staple of modern work, having a dedicated area for Zoom calls is essential. This part of the studio has a TV, a comfortable seating arrangement, and a setup that ensures seamless communication. Key Considerations for Your Innovation Studio When building your innovation studio, there are several key factors to keep in mind: Space Utilization: Make the most of the space you have. If you're working with a smaller area, consider multifunctional furniture and storage solutions that maximize efficiency. Sound Management: Whether you're recording audio or want a quiet space to focus, managing sound is crucial. Incorporate materials that suppress and tune the acoustics to create an optimal environment. Lighting: Proper lighting is essential, especially for video production. Consider installing a lighting grid to eliminate the need for floor-standing lights, which can clutter the space. Flexibility: Your innovation studio should be adaptable. As your projects evolve, so too should your workspace. Incorporate elements allowing easy reconfiguration, such as rolling tool chests or movable desks. The Journey of Building My Innovation Studio My innovation studio has undergone several transformations since its inception. What started as a simple setup has grown into a comprehensive space where I can ideate, prototype, and collaborate with others. The ongoing process of refining the studio has taught me the importance of flexibility and the value of a well-designed workspace. As I continue building and optimizing my innovation studio, I encourage you to think about your space. What do you need to bring your ideas to life? How can you create an environment that supports your creative process? Whether starting with a corner of a room or designing a full-fledged studio, the key is to make it your own.

Ambitious aquatech businesses are invited to apply for a ground breaking Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) mentoring programme in a sector which has just attracted a €15 million investment from the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF). The ISIF has announced the investment to Hatch's Blue Revolution Fund which focuses on early-stage companies who have the potential to transform aquatech. Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue today announced that BIM is partnering again this year with aquaculture accelerator Hatch Blue for its popular Innovation Studio. This is a free, intensive two-week programme aimed at supporting young aquatech companies in all aspects of development including technology and investment. BIM's Aquatech Development Programme is supported by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (2021 - 2027) with an investment of €380,000 in 2024. The aim of the BIM Innovation Studio is to grow Ireland's €200 million aquatech business and to position the country as the "Silicon Valley" of the sector. Now in its seventh year, some 50 projects and companies have completed the Innovation Studio and have attracted a total investment of around €15 million, creating more than 200 hi-tech jobs. "I am delighted to announce applications are open for the 2024 BIM Innovation Studio which has fostered a wealth of innovation, energy and talent in Ireland's growing aquatech sector since its inception seven years ago," said Minister McConalogue. "This programme offers a unique opportunity for companies with technology applicable to the globally important aquaculture sector to improve their investor readiness and increase market access. "Ireland is leading the way in the development of the aquatech sector with some 60 Irish aquatech companies turning over €200 million in 2022 with the potential for significant growth and job creation." The Minister welcomed the €15 million investment by ISIF in the Blue Revolution Fund which invests in early stage aquatech companies. "This is a huge vote of confidence in the sector which has enormous potential. Aquatech companies can advance the health of the oceans while providing sustainable seafood regenerative ecosystem services and community benefits." Aquatech is any technology or innovation driving sustainable seafood farming, and it can be applied progressively to the breeding, raising, and harvesting of fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants. The BIM Innovation Studio offers opportunities for companies in areas such as pharmaceuticals, marine engineering, genetics, feed additives and artificial intelligence. Applications for the BIM Innovation Studio are open until 19 July 2024. The BIM Innovation Studio takes place from 1 to 10 October at the Lee Hotel, Cork City. Several companies will then be selected to pitch at the BIM Aquatech Conference on 11 October, where the winner of the BIM Aquatech Business of the Year 2024 will also be announced. "The BIM Aquatech Innovation Studio provides a springboard for aquatech innovations, connecting participants with industry experts, mentors, and investors worldwide," said Jessica Giannoumis, Hatch Blue's Aquatech Community Manager for Ireland. "Whether it's sensor technology, alternative seafood solutions, or water management strategies, this is the ultimate opportunity to refine your aquatech vision." Eight to ten successful applicants will be matched with experienced mentors to further develop their business strategy, product or service. They will also have access to a global network of aquaculture technical experts. Several companies involved in the 2023 Innovation Studio attended a delegation to Southeast Asia last year with Hatch to grow their network and learn more about their potential market. The delegation has secured potential business opportunities on foot of this.
In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, Matthew Worwood and Cyndi Burnett have the pleasure of speaking with Anne Rizza, an experienced and dedicated High School English teacher with an impressive 24-year tenure. Anne attended the Teacher's Innovation Studio, where she learned how to put her creativity into action to help identify a challenge in her classroom. At the time, Anne's students were using Google Slides, but they were simply filling the slides with text, leading to a lack of engagement. Anne decided to introduce Canva to her students and teach them how to use it effectively to captivate their audience.Anne explains that it took small steps to get her students to remove excessive text from their presentations, resulting in a significant improvement in their engagement levels. By the third semester, she noticed that the only text on the screen was the film title and perhaps a term, allowing the students' presentations to focus on visual storytelling rather than relying on written information. In health innovation, you can have the most amazing idea and a rock-solid business plan, but in order to scale, you might still need to find the right enterprise partner. Topping this list for many entrepreneurs is Anthem, which serves 40 million people and is ranked #57 on the Fortune 500 list. It's safe to say that if your startup can get distribution through this network, it's going to put you on a whole new trajectory. In order to find out how Anthem works with startups, we invited Omid Toloui, Anthem's Vice President of Innovation, to join us for a chat. Anthem has had a range of programs in recent years aimed at collaborating with nimble, forward-thinking startups, like their Innovation Studio in Atlanta and their Digital Incubator Program. But we wanted Omid to pull back the curtain on exactly how Anthem thinks about innovation, and how startups can partner with them. This StartUp Health NOW episode was excerpted from a Fireside Chat held in front of a live audience of Health Transformers from the StartUp Health portfolio. Enjoy. https://soultrained.com/ backup phone for DDS: 646-270-6113 I help leaders get up out of the weeds of their comfort zones and into places they didn't know they needed to go. I bring my multi-sector global experience, decades of training in human potential, and enduring dedication to creating leaders who are worth following to every single thing I do. I believe that, at its core, executive coaching and leadership growth is about delivering shifts in what you do and how you do it. And I believe that shift happens most sustainably and radically through a process of hard human kindness. A trusted coach of mine once said to me, "Nothing great ever came from comfort zones." This really hit home. I understand coaching to be a process and commitment to letting go of unuseful behaviors and patterns and to becoming an exceptional leader. You should know that I will be as dedicated as you are [if not more] to your pursuit of becoming extraordinary. These philosophies underpin my approach and give you an idea of what you'll be getting yourself into when you decide to work with me. I have notched up over 25 years of working in small, medium, and large corporations. We highlight thought leaders who are constantly evolving their strategy and can provide insight to folks about how to address new business challenges. AllVoices is on a mission to create safe, happy, and healthy workplaces for all, and we're excited to learn from experts who share our mission. In this episode of Reimagining Company Culture, we're chatting with Dr. Pierce Otlhogile-Gordon Director, Equity Innovation Studio at Think Rubix. Dr. Pierce serves as a researcher, facilitator, evaluator, and change catalyst that uses Equity Innovation to shape our collective future.About AllVoicesIn today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies. To learn more about AllVoices visit us at www.allvoices.co!

Why do stories matter to the innovation process? What values can be instilled in innovators who share stories? How do innovation leaders inspire creators to tell and share their success and failure stories? We speak with Tim Raderstorf, Chief Innovation Officer at The Ohio State University College of Nursing, as well as the Head of Academic Entrepreneurship at the Erdős Institute. To top it all off, he founded the Innovation Studio, a makerspace that democratizes innovation, providing every interprofessional team that pitches their innovation with the funding, tools, and mentorship needed to turn ideas into actions. Tim shares his innovation story along with stories of other innovative leaders who effectively apply the “yes, and” approach. This approach improves organizations’ ideation rate: a way to measure innovation in companies in which the amount of positive ideas divided by the number of active participants. According to Tim, the higher the ideation rate, the higher your return on investment for innovation. You can connect with Tim on LinkedIn and Twitter. OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast talks to Dr. Tim Raderstorf, DNP, MSN, RN and the first-ever Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and the Founder of The Innovation Studio. Tim talks about creating a better model that involves inter-professional collaboration in order to bring about innovation for healthcare solutions. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Tim talks about how he entered into the field of nursing, completed his masters and the dove into his healthcare entrepreneurial journey. He expands on his role as a Chief Innovation Officer at OSU. What led him to create The Innovation Studio? What were the resources The Innovation Studio lacked at the beginning compared to now? Tim explains The Innovation Studio’s relationship with The Ohio State University and how the process for intellectual property is created and managed. To share an example of the amazing projects coming out of the studio, Tim highlights a simple, cost-effective and non-destructive product from a clinical nurse specialist with a napkin drawing. As an entrepreneur, he shares the key traits individuals need to identify problems, come up with solutions and get ideas developed. Tim talks about his book, “Evidence-Based Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Nursing and Healthcare - A Practical Guide to Success,” and relates it to the importance of having an entrepreneurial mindset. Tim provides insight and advice for aspiring innovators with a passion for changing people's lives. 3 KEY POINTS: It’s important to create a model where people can come and share their knowledge in order to enrich ideas that aim to innovate and elevate healthcare, while providing grants and supervision. Starting out on your own, creating prototypes and making your ideas come to life - this is all within your reach. There are people who readily acknowledge and understand a problem and they’re humble enough to know they don’t have enough knowledge. Seek advice, listen to other people and have the passion to solve the problem. TWEETABLE QUOTES: “We like to think of the tech personalization pathway as a tornado.” - Dr. Tim Raderstorf “This is going to change the world but it’s doing it in a very simple way, a very elegant way, and a way that requires very little behaviour modification.” - Dr. Tim Raderstorf RESOURCES MENTIONED: Dr. Tim Raderstorf on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/timraderstorf The Innovation Studio - https://nursing.osu.edu/offices-and-initiatives/office-innovation-and-strategic-partnerships/innovationstudio Nurses Everywhere - https://www.nurseseverywhere.com/ Evidence-Based Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Nursing and Healthcare A Practical Guide to Success by Dr. Tim Raderstorf on Springerpub - https://www.springerpub.com/evidence-based-leadership-innovation-and-entrepreneurship-in-nursing-and-healthcare-9780826196187.html Evidence-Based Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Nursing and Healthcare - A Practical Guide to Success on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Evidence-Based-Leadership-Innovation-Entrepreneurship-Healthcare/dp/0826196187 #HealthcareEntrepreneurAcademy #healthcare #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #innovation #techcommercialization #innovationstudio

Your hosts. Lynn, Carmel, Marie-Claude and Marc (Video of show at bottom) ListenEN_Interview_2-20181026-WIE20 Cyber threats to Canadian elections Online posts designed to provoke emotional reactions and to amplify them are a specialty of hackers, warn security experts. (iStock) There has been much talk of alleged cyber interference in the U.S general election, and now there are concerns something similar might happen in Canada. This country is approaching its general election which will occur next year. Because the federal election in Canada is still conducted by paper ballot- as indeed is the vast majority of political voting at all levels here- there is less of a threat of tampering. However, influencing and manipulating public opinion through social media via fake accounts, is a concern.. Lynn spoke to Aleksander Essex, an assistant professor of software engineering at Western University Fake news, and now fake fact-checking We've all heard of the concept of fake news, but now there are fake "fact-checking" sites to confuse people about the truth. (Shutterstock) It used to be called false or misleading information, but now it's been reduced to the more simplistic "fake news". That's one thing, and was countered to some extent by the rise of fact-checking sites. However, it may not come as a surprise given the nature of the internet, that there have been fake fact checking sites that have sprung up. Some of these support the false news with supposedly factual information, others attack the real news, and even attack the real fact checking sites. In some cases its for money- through website clicks- but in others its a deliberate attempt to sow confusion. Marc spoke to Ramona Pringle. She is a technology columnist, an associate professor in the RTA School of Media, and director of the Innovation Studio both at Ryerson University in Toronto. Great Lakes drowning numbers increase Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes seen churning here in a photo taken during a storm. (Dave Sandford/Dave Sandford Photography/CBC) The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project came into being in 2010. They say the drownings are up by 14 people from last year, and unfamiliarity with the Lakes cold water is partly responsible. Carmel spoke to Bob Pratt, a former firefighter and paramedic. He is the Executive Director of Education for the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. He says knowing how to swim in a calm and small pool is quite different from swimming in the huge lake with waves and currents. Video of show
