To true fans, baseball is so much more than a sport. Some call it the perfect game. Some see it as a field of dreams. A portal to another dimension. Some see it as a road to God. Others—”heathen” we might call them—find the game unutterably boring. Too confusing, too long, too nit-picky about rules. In this episode, Yankee fan John Sexton (President Emeritus of New York University and Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law) joins Red Sox fan Evan Rosa to discuss the philosophical and spiritual aspects of baseball. John is the author of the 2013 bestselling book Baseball as a Road to God, which is based on a course he has taught at NYU for over twenty years.Image Credit: “The American National Game of Base Ball: Grand Match for the Championship at the Elysian Fields, Hoboken, N. In this Ask the Expert episode, HR expert Kathleen Hermacinski and Matt Trainum, vice president with the Council of Independent Colleges, respond to questions from listeners about the use of recruiting for roles in higher education. The questions they explore include how in-house and outside recruiting firms work at colleges and universities. Hermacinski said that outside firms search on behalf of the institution. Based on her experience as the head of human resources at Eureka College, she said they typically only use search firms for C-suite leadership positions, including president. Trainum said candidates must jump through a few hoops with the outside firm before talking with a decision-maker. That means they must create quick takeaways and concise pitches that can be easily relayed to on-campus contacts, he said.  Hermacinski is the head of human resources at Eureka College. She recently took part in CUPA-HR's Ignite program, which is sponsored in part by HigherEdJobs. Have you struggled to fit in when you landed a job on a college campus? In this Ask the Expert episode, Matt Trainum, vice president with the Council of Independent Colleges, responds to a listener who left the busy corporate world due to burnout and made a move into higher education. This person is having a difficult time adjusting to the "laissez-faire" attitudes of some department colleagues at a time when there are many external environmental challenges and opportunities. "Am I a bad cultural fit for my institution, department, or academia?" they asked. "After several years, I'm still previewing everything I'm about to say to avoid sounding like the 'private sector guy.' Will this self-censorship ever go away? Would I be a better fit in a business school?"Trainum said first, he appreciates when people state their truth, even during challenging times. He suggested that our listener "find his crowd." Others on campus likely feel the same way and are having similar conversations. Trainum also said the listener should pick their battles. It's easy to critique the environment you're in when you're not happy or feel like you're not in sync with others on your team. Figure out how to address the issues you want with your "crowd" and focus on what really matters to you.  Trainum is the vice president for networks and strategic partnerships with the Council of Independent Colleges.Have a question you want to hear answered on Ask the Expert? In this episode, Matt Trainum with the Council of Independent Colleges responds to a question from a "seasoned" employee in their 50s. Our listener said they would like to get back into college recruiting but given their years of experience, they feel they are being passed up for roles that would be a good fit. "What positions should a 'seasoned' employee like me be applying for in higher education?" they asked.Trainum said that candidates should apply for jobs they're interested in, ones in which they can be successful. It's also important for job seekers to make the pitch and promote themselves to the hiring manager. In terms of the listener's question, he said he perceives that they're applying for roles that younger people typically might occupy. Trainum said this job seeker may feel that "the folks I see in this position don't necessarily resemble me." This can be painful for a job seeker, and it could lead to a sense of not feeling valued in a space in which they know they can contribute. In just two weeks, students attending Franklin & Marshall College will be back on campus for the fall semester. F&M President Dr. Barbara Altman says the start of a new academic year is the highlight of her year.  “We're expecting a first-year class of about 500, which is pretty much what we planned. I know we might want to talk about the various things going on in higher ed these days, but we're delighted with a very, very talented class of 500”. In addition to serving as President, Dr. Altman is the Board Chair of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AICUP) of Pennsylvania. AICUP is the only statewide organization that serves exclusively the interests of independent, nonprofit higher education within the Commonwealth and exists to complement and support the work of campus leaders. She also recently led the largest fundraising program in the college's history. “We closed that campaign about two years ago and we came in over about 10% over goal. It takes a long time to do a capital campaign like that. Among our most important priorities was raising money to support financial aid for students. We give very generous aid, and we commit to fully meeting a student's aid for all four years there with us. So that's a big part of our budget”. Dr. Altman has been at F&M since August 2018. She says the location in Lancaster, and the reputation of the college is what led her to Franklin & Marshall. “Being in Lancaster is an unbelievable privilege and advantage for Franklin and Marshall. Many schools like us are located in quite isolated places, but we have this wonderful, vibrant, busy, exciting city to work in and we're an open campus, so our our boundaries just meld right into the neighborhoods around us. Our students volunteer, work for paid, do internships, right in Lancaster City and Lancaster County. We love to bring the community to our facilities, as they just came for the Lancaster International Piano Festival, which was held in our beautiful little jewel of a concert hall. The bars are a concert hall, and we're just so lucky to be in the fabric, right in the fabric of a really happening little city. That is a great place for our students to live and work. I'm happy to say that we have about 1400 Franklin and Marshall grads working in the immediate area. It's our third largest alumni group, actually.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Matt Trainum offers his advice on how to translate the skills you've acquired in higher education into a job in a new realm. At the highest level, you have to believe that you can do whatever job you're applying to during your job search, he said. As you look to make that move, conduct smart research and prepare yourself well for each stage you'll encounter. Self-reflection is also a great place to start if you're imagining exiting  higher ed and going into another industry. Translate is a key word, Trainum said. You've got to translate every word and every experience when you're presenting what you've done. Department chairs are similar to department managers in a highly-decentralized organization. But it's up to you to help the team you're interviewing with see that connection. Trainum is currently the vice president for Networks and Strategic Partnerships with the Council of Independent Colleges. There is a lot of pressure to make decisions quickly and to make decisions in a transparent way.” Hass says these new leaders would also be wise to embrace continuous innovation in degree offerings, revenue streams and student recruitment, which she believes was a hallmark of colleges and universities who managed best during the pandemic. Our guest in this episode is Marjorie Hass, president of the Council of Independent Colleges, who previously served as president of Rhodes College and of Austin College. Her recent book, A Leadership Guide for Women in Higher Education, stems from conversations with women leaders over many years. In her responses to our questions about calling, leadership, and times of personal as well as institutional crisis, Marjorie drew upon a set of images and metaphors from her own Jewish tradition. For her, calling is first and foremost about responsibility—that is, our ability to respond—as Abraham and others did. She reminds us that when Jacob wrestled with the angel, he received the blessing but forever afterward walked with a limp.

Students and state and federal governments alike are asking increasingly hard questions about the return on their investment in postsecondary education, as tuitions and debt grow.   In this episode of The Key, which is sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, three experts with a diverse set of perspectives discuss the government role in ensuring value from academic institutions and programs:  the complexity of any attempt to formally measure postsecondary value; the importance of focusing on historically underrepresented students; and the centrality of the federal role in holding colleges accountable. Jamienne S. Studley is president and CEO of the WASC Senior College and University Commission, an accrediting agency. Kim Hunter Reed is a former senior Education Department official who is now commissioner of higher education in Louisiana. Barbara Mistick is a former private college president who leads the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, which has historically bristled at federal attempts to regulate higher education too closely. As you'll learn below, Mr. Collins, aka PC, aka Jim, has done and continues to do many great things professionally. Most importantly to me, however, is the impact he's had on my personal life. While we were born in two different generations, we get along like peanut butter & jelly or eggs & bacon. President Collins has become one of my dearest friends, truest advisors, and Guru-esque in my life. In this episode of Good Explanations, I largely turn the tables on my (unofficial) Therapist and ask him questions on how he thinks about & makes decisions, what he's learned as a husband, father, Mentor, and Mentee, learning when to ask for help or say something, and so much more. And, as any great friend does, Jim lets me riff on a couple of matters that naturally arise. I hope you enjoy the second podcast of Good Explanations with my best of friends, President Jim Collins. James (Jim) Collins obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance from Loras College in 1984 and a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education from the University of Iowa in 2004. After graduating from Loras, Mr. Collins returned to campus as an admissions representative and has continued to operate in a variety of positions in his 37 years of service at Loras College. In 1999, he was appointed as the College's Senior Vice President, before being elected in 2004 as Loras College's 26th President. During his presidential tenure, Collins has served as a leader on the national, state, and local fronts to include: Chair, Treasurer, and board member of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities; Board of Regents and Board of Trustees, Seton Hall University; Chair, Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; Executive Committee, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; Chair, Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, and Archdiocese of Dubuque Board of Education. A Crystal Lake, IL native and the oldest of 6 children, Jim has been twice recognized as one of America's Top 100 Irish Educators. Episode 9: Creative Cultural Leadership with Sanjit Sethi Sanjit Sethi has been an artist and cultural academic leader for the past twenty years and is currently the President of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He has also served in leadership roles at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University, Memphis College of Art, the California College of the Arts and the Santa Fe Art Institute – among others. Additionally, he has taught at prestigious art schools such as the Srishti School of Art, Design, and Technology in India, MIT; and the Art Institute of Chicago. As an artist and curator, his work has spanned different media and geographies. Past works include the Kuni Wada Bakery Remembrance; Richmond Voting Stories; and the Gypsy Bridge project. Recent curatorial projects have included Spiked: The Unpublished Political Cartoons of Rob Rogers and 6.13.89 The Cancelling of the Mapplethorpe Exhibition.  Creative Cultural Leadership Creative Cultural Leadership is a philosophy that embraces artistry, innovation and empathy as fundamental to understanding and working with individuals and communities. The words creativity and innovation have taken on definitions which are too limiting. Creativity, experimentation and collaboration involves listening and decisiveness but also an embrace and an elevation of your own voice alongside the voice of others; it's not a solitary activity. All problems have a cultural aspect to it. The creative and the poetic mindset go hand in hand when building communities. Imperfection is OK Failure is an iterative process: Try, Fail, Learn – this is easier to see in art than it is in leadership. The world is asymmetrical in nature; very few things actually fit in neat tidy boxes. Our focus on symmetry allows us to avoid the real issues that exist in the world; oftentimes we're stymied thinking the system has to be perfect before being able to fix something. Leading a Team During a Crisis It's powerful to check in with your team about how they are doing – and yet be surgically efficient in how we use our time. Make space for visioning because you can't simply turn it on; inspire vision, create a visual palette cleanse to prepare the mind to vision. Push your team to not just solve current problems, but also to think about the future. Keep the team motivated: give credit, celebrate accomplishments, thank people in surprising ways, also there is no such thing as a dumb idea. Leadership Is… Leadership is how someone is able to judge when to leap from one moving freight train to another moving freight train and how to keep your hat during that leap. You have to know when to leap and when to wait. Leadership is asking what you know to be true that you think no one else in your field believes in; because you've got an idea everyone else thinks is absolutely bonkers. Leadership is being ok with the unease everyone feels which can be isolating. Leadership is showing empathy by showing a little bit of yourself. Leadership is vulnerability and contemplation which are two leadership qualities that are overlooked. Leading with Panic Check out Sanjit's article called Leading with Panic. Why Leaders Need to Talk More Openly About Anxiety. How do you take a disability or how do you take what seems like a disability and reframe it as an asset for communication and for greater empathy? Code Switching Working through leadership as a person of color Code switching can be exhausting and it's ok to acknowledge that Navigating white privilege Microaggressions can still exist even when have similar political perspectives Other References Jamie Bennett the Executive Director at ArtPlace America Ken Strickland who was the Dean at the Memphis College of Art Jean-Pierre Larocque a ceramicists and Associate Professor at Concordia University Ben Vinson, Provost and Executive Vice President at Case Western Reserve University Association for Independent Colleges of Art and Design To learn more about my work in executive coaching, leadership development and team effectiveness check out my website, connect with me on LinkedIn or email me at winnie@winnifred.org.
