Bedside ultrasound can be used to identify small bowel obstruction in minutes. CT scans can take over an hour, so POCUS can be very helpful in treating your patients.
This is not necessarily related to ultrasound but does delve into the topics of burnout and life fulfillment through worthwhile goals outside of medicine.
With the Covid-19 pandemic still underway lung ultrasound can be a useful bedside ultrasound application for your sick respiratory patients. Lots of content and pearls in this episode to help you learn the indications and how to acquire the images for lung scanning.
Sorry for the late release. Work and life got in my way, but we'll have some awesome content for this next week and a bonus episode later this week. Keep scanning and be safe!
As a follow up to last week's episode we're going to dive into some cases where the ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca nerve block made a difference for actual patients. Bedside ultrasound is a tool that you can use in so many cases, but only if you practice and develop the skillset. Get out there and scan your patients!Link to the YouTube channel.
Today's episode featured Dr. David Bosch and how his group instituted a protocol for ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block. Point of care ultrasound can make a HUGE difference for patients with hip fractures in avoiding complications from narcotic use. This is a bedside skill that WILL change your practice, so stay tuned!Link to YouTube videoLink to the fascia iliaca block kit developed by Dr. BoschLink to the regional anesthetic quick reference card
How can point of care ultrasound be useful when the patient has an obvious gluteal or other anatomical abscesses? Have you ever been unsure if that large, indurated area is just cellulitis or abscess but decided to cut anyway, only to get nothing out? Then this is your episode! It isn't always easy to clinically distinguish the two diagnoses and, even if you are sure it's an abscess, it can be hard to know where the best place to incise is without being able to see into the tissue. Abscesses can develop in close approximation to large vascular structures and there can also be abscess mimics (lymph nodes). The abscess may also be hiding in induration, making it difficult to incise the correct location. POCUS can be used at the bedside in the Emergency Department to change your management. In this episode of Soundwaves From the Community learn the tips and tricks to help you better manage the soft tissue infections in your patients and drain the best location every time.Take home points:-Use color flow doppler to avoid vascular structures-Interrogate to find the largest area of purulent material and pus-Use color flow doppler in the neck, axilla, and groin to avoid incising a lymph nodeLink to the Youtube videoArticle cited:Gaspari, R., Dayno, M., Briones, J. et al. If you've ever had a patient that was bitten by a heroin spider, then this episode is for you! More point of care ultrasound goodness from the community as we delve into the process of scanning the soft tissues to differentiate cellulitis vs abscess. Enjoy!Youtube linkTake home points:-cobblestoning-increased skin thickness-no large fluid collectionAll of the above points to cellulitis. Incision and drainage not indicated.
Welcome to ultrasound basics! In this episode we cover basic knobs and buttons, optimizing the screen image through depth and gain, as well as probe movements to interrogate (sweep/fan), center (slide/rock), or change axis (rotation) of anatomical structures.Subscribe for the latest and greatest cases utilizing POCUS (point of care ultrasound).Watch the episode video on youtube!
