On this episode we discussed the social norms regarding marriage and children. Although some of these norms may be similar we focus more on norms in our Cameroonian culture and households. We share our thoughts on marriage and children both in our personal lives and from what we have seen in our communities. It is important to discuss both the positive and negative aspects of this topic. Some of the narratives we continue to enforce in our society are detrimental and dangerous to our wellbeing. We discuss tragic situations in the African communities in the USA that led murders and suicide. We have to take the time to understand what we are doing wrong and what is detrimental to some of our communities. It's important that we learn to respect everyone's choices when it comes to marriage and children even when they are different from societal norms.Comment below your experiences and how similar or different it has been from societal norms. Episode 7: Expectations Vs Reality: Our Education and Careers & What's Next?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2020 42:51

On this episode we explore social norms when it comes to education and our career paths. Being both from Cameroonian families, we grew up with very high expectations from our families. These values instilled by our parents have shaped us into who we are today. As immigrants, coming to America is a privilege and an opportunity many of our brothers and sisters back home do not have. Our parents have always expected the best from us. We share the struggles we had trying to meet those expectations but also finding our passions in our education and careers. Our path is still being carved. We discuss what is next for us in that aspect of our lives. African communities do not often valorize the arts and many other creative career paths. We discuss our thoughts on that and what this generation must do to change that mentality. Comment below your experiences and how similar or different it has been from societal norms. We want to hear your stories. Episode 6: Colorism:Its Origins, Our Experiences and Is it Still a Problem?

On this episode we focused on Colorism , especially in our Black communities. What is colorism? Is it still an issue today? How can we combat colorism? We explore the origins of Colorism both from the slavery and colonialism aspect. In our last episode we discussed how beauty has always been heavenly influenced by the Eurocentric society. In turn, spreading the idea that the closer you are to white (light skin) the more superior you are. This needs to stop. We shared our experience both in Cameroon and in the United States. What are we teaching our children? We must end this generational curse and this self-hate we inflict on each other. We do see color and that is the beauty of the variety of shades in African Descendants. Let's celebrate and appreciate all shades of black instead of reinforcing an idea that was meant to divide us and break us down psychologically. All shades of melanated skin tone are beautiful. On this episode we talk about our struggles with body image. We share our vulnerabilities with you from the moment we first noticed our body images to how we feel about it now. We also talk about tips that have helped us love our bodies and what we are still working on in our journeys. Eurocentric society plays a huge role in what is portrayed as the ideal body features. As black people, we need to learn to love ourselves in our natural forms. We are so diverse and beautiful. Representation has a huge part in shaping our children's sense of beauty, so we must affirm to our children that they are beautiful and so are other children who look different than them. We hope that this will help you love yourself and others despite societal expectations or norms. On this episode we discussed Mental Health in our African community. We start by defining Mental Health as its definition is often distorted in our community. Which creates a lot of stigma surrounding Mental Health in our communities leading to prejudice and discrimination. We also tackle the subject of Depression and Suicide which are very common mental health issues that are plaguing the world today.
