HT2480 - A Language I Do Not Speak One of the objectives of art is to communicate with others. That communication does rely, however, on a common language and vocabulary. I was thinking about this last night as I attended my first ever ballet performance — the classic holiday fare, The Nutcracker. I felt badly that this holiday classic connects so deeply with so many and simply bounced off me as I was lost in total incomprehension. I appreciated it the athleticism of the dancers, but the artistic content escaped me. Clearly, this is the result of my lack of ability to understand the language and vocabulary of ballet, a shortcoming for which I accept total responsibility. The better comparison is peripherization: practices once common in the periphery now shape the core, from precarious work to state-enabled accumulation. That shift helps explain why labor leverage has collapsed despite rising public sympathy: dispersed service shops, automated production, and logistics-dependence blunt traditional organizing power.China enters as Rorschach test: state capitalism, social credit, and surveillance make the feudal label tempting, yet the core logic remains capitalist, steered by growth imperatives and legitimacy management. We explore AI's forked path—job-displacing windfall or costly stagnation—and why care-economy fixes won't build a livable future on their own. If everyone secretly wants social democracy back, we ask what could replace the vanished conditions that once made it possible.The conversation ends with “dark hope.” Drop the costume drama, name the system we have, and fight for a directly political project that builds capacity: housing, grids, industry, and public institutions that actually work. I call this the tiny W. The tiny W happens when when one word ends with an “oo” sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound. Like, do it. We don't stop the sound, and in one breath we say, doo-wit. It's not do it, it's doo-wit. I'm gonna doo-wit tomorrow. Did you hear the tiny w? I'm gonna doo-wit tomorrow. Here are some other examples:  You are sounds like yoo-wahr. Yoo-wahr a nice person. Who else sounds like hoo-welse. Hoo-welse is coming to the party?To ask sounds like too-wask. The Detroit Lions head into Steelers week with a sharper injury picture and a clearer offensive to-do list. Thursday brought both concern and relief. It also underscored where this NFL team must win situationally, and how the Detroit Lions Podcast sees the fixes lining up. Injury Ledger and Depth Moves Graham Glasgow did not practice with a knee after being listed as a full participant in Wednesday's walkthrough. That is a setback. He has stabilized the interior and played better since the 10-day break. Taylor Decker returned on his standard rest plan. Thomas Harper stacked a second full practice and should clear concussion protocol, putting him on track to start at safety. Sione Vaki moved to full. That helps special teams and sub packages. Giovanni Manu was officially activated. The knee injury was a hyperextension, not surgical. Practice reps are the priority. He needs every snap he can get, even as a scout team tackle or emergency sixth lineman. The planet theory applies here. Athletes that big who move like that are rare. The realistic goal is tackle three next year. Getting him back in the building now accelerates that plan. Morton's Offense After Rams Coordinator John Morton loosened up in front of the mics and still drilled the core point. Detroit must get off the ball better in the run game. The Rams teed off when the Lions showed two backs. Safeties crashed the A gap and squeezed the edges. Tight end blocking did not hold up. That shrank lanes for Jahmyr Gibbs and wasted early downs. The Detroit Lions still scored 34, but the tape says there is meat left on the bone. The fix is personnel. Stop leaning on 12 when you do not have two NFL-caliber tight ends available. Lean into the wideouts. Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Isaac TeSlaa and Kalif Raymond give Detroit burst, leverage, and spacing. More 11 and spread looks stress rules without telegraphing the run fit. It also creates cleaner access throws that let Gibbs and Amon-Ra work after the catch. Morton even joked about foot speed with Williams and Gibbs. The speed is real. Use it. Special Teams and Steelers Prep Dave Fipp backed Jake Bates after a rough outing. The kicker had a bad day. It happens. Confidence from the coordinator matters in December. Hidden yards and calm operations matter even more. The Steelers are up. That front punishes hesitation. Detroit's path is simple to say and hard to do. Win first contact in the run game. Keep protection firm if Glasgow cannot go. Feature tempo and spacing. Rotate receivers and challenge leverage. Owens celebrated Mableton’s new departments and leadership team, calling 2025 a year of “building the foundation.” Next year? It’s all about community engagement and growth. Thurman highlighted Powder Springs’ shiny new city hall and parking garage, plus job-creating developments. His focus for 2026? Sustainable growth and leaving a legacy of leadership. STORY 2: Jaha Howard wins runoff for Georgia Senate District 35 Jaha Howard pulled off a narrow win Tuesday night, defeating fellow Democrat Roger Bruce in the runoff for state Senate District 35. Unofficial results show Howard, a dentist and former Cobb school board member, edging out Bruce with 51.9% of the vote to Bruce’s 48.1%. The seat, which covers parts of Cobb and Fulton counties, was left open when Jason Esteves stepped down to run for governor. Howard credited his win to personal outreach—hundreds of phone calls, he said, to build trust. “People want to feel heard,” he said. Bruce’s campaign struggled with name recognition, especially in Cobb. STORY 3: Cobb County staff trade desk work for Christmas carols  Glover Park got a dose of holiday magic Tuesday, thanks to Cobb County’s newest choir, “Cobb County Sonic Sound” (or, as they like to call themselves, “CoCo SoSo”). Led by Dr. Jatunn Gibson, head of the county’s Public Services Agency, the group—decked out in festive sweaters and holiday flair—belted out classics like “Joy to the World” and “White Christmas.” Oh, and they’ve got their own band too, all county employees. This week, he was named the 2025 Mableton Citizen of the Year at the South Cobb Area Council meeting, and the surprise left him, well, a little speechless. “It just warms my heart,” Gaines said. “To know the work I’ve done is appreciated like this—it’s humbling.” Gaines, who’s the director of planning at Croy Engineering and chairs the Mableton Development Authority Board, was honored by Mayor Michael Owens. “Jason’s been a force,” Owens said. “His expertise and passion have shaped this community at such a critical time.” The guy’s résumé? Stacked. Leadership programs, board memberships—he’s everywhere. STORY 5: Anderson steps down as Walker football coach TJ Anderson pulled off something close to miraculous in 2025. With just 23 players—yes, 23—he guided Walker through a grueling 10-game season. The Wolverines finished 2-8, but they still earned a spot in the Class A-AAA Private state playoffs. Unfortunately, injuries piled up, and the team had to decline the bid. “We had to make the best decision for our kids,” Anderson said, reflecting on the tough call. But that season? It was his last. Anderson announced on X that he’s stepping down as Walker’s head coach after three years. “It’s been a journey,” he wrote, thanking the community and his family. BRAVES: Ha-Seong Kim is staying put in Atlanta—at least for another year. The 30-year-old shortstop signed a one-year, $20 million deal with the Braves on Monday, locking him in as the team’s starter for 2026. Not bad, considering he turned down a $16 million option just last month and walked away with an extra $4 million. Kim joined the Braves late last season, claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on Sept. 1. He made an immediate impact, hitting .309 with a .372 OBP, three homers, and 12 RBIs in his first 19 games. Sure, he cooled off at the end—1-for-19 in the last five games—but the Braves clearly see his potential. Kim’s journey hasn’t been without bumps. Injuries sidelined him for much of 2025 with the Rays, where he hit just .214 in 24 games. But let’s not forget—this guy won a Gold Glove with the Padres in 2023 and has 84 career stolen bases. The Braves are betting on a bounce-back. And if Kim can channel his San Diego form, he could be a 3-4 WAR player. High hopes, but hey, the talent’s there.
