Exodus 12    Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 “This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year for you. 3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are, each one, to take a lamb for themselves, according to the fathers' households, a lamb for each household. 4 Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; in proportion to what each one should eat, you are to divide the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to slaughter it at twilight. 7 Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. 10 And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall completely burn with fire. 11 Now you shall eat it in this way: with your garment belted around your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in a hurry—it is the Lord's Passover. 12 For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and fatally strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the human firstborn to animals; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will come upon you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 ‘Now this day shall be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance. 15 For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall remove dough with yeast from your houses; for whoever eats anything with yeast from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 And on the first day you shall have a holy assembly, and another holy assembly on the seventh day; no work at all shall be done on them, except for what must be eaten by every person—that alone may be prepared by you. 17 You shall also keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your multitudes out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall keep this day throughout your generations as a permanent ordinance. 18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 For seven days there shall be no dough with yeast found in your houses; for whoever eats anything with yeast, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land. 20 You shall not eat anything with yeast; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.'” 21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22 And you shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; but when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to strike you. 24 And you shall keep this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. 25 When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall keep this rite. 26 And when your children say to you, ‘What does this rite mean to you?' 27 then you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord because He passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians, but spared our homes.'” And the people bowed low and worshiped. 28 Then the sons of Israel went and did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. 29 Now it came about at midnight that the Lord struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle. 30 And Pharaoh got up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead. 31 Then he called for Moses and Aaron at night and said, “Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the sons of Israel; and go, worship the Lord, as you have said. 32 Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go, and bless me also.” 33 The Egyptians urged the people, to send them out of the land in a hurry, for they said, “We will all be dead.” 34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls bound up in the clothes on their shoulders. 35 Now the sons of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, for they had requested from the Egyptians articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; 36 and the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have their request. Therefore they plundered the Egyptians. 37 Now the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children. 38 A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock. 39 And they baked the dough which they had brought out of Egypt into cakes of unleavened bread. For it had no yeast, since they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves. 40 Now the time that the sons of Israel had lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41 And at the end of 430 years, on this very day, all the multitudes of the Lord departed from the land of Egypt. 42 It is a night to be observed for the Lord, for having brought them out of the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations. 43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: no foreigner is to eat it; 44 but as for every slave that someone has purchased with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat it. 45 A stranger or a hired worker shall not eat it. 46 It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring any of the meat outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it. 47 All the congregation of Israel are to celebrate this. 48 But if a stranger resides with you and celebrates the Passover to the Lord, all of his males are to be circumcised, and then he shall come near to celebrate it; and he shall be like a native of the land. Students at Morehouse College recently raised concerns over a newly unveiled painting of Joseph Smith to be displayed in the Martin Luther King International Chapel gallery on campus. The artwork, intended as part of an interfaith partnership highlighting individuals who champion racial equality, quickly became the center of a student-led pushback and dialogue about representation, historical memory, and institutional values. Some students questioned why Smith—founder The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—was selected for prominent display at a historically Black college, particularly given the LDS Church's racist past, restrictions on Black members holding the priesthood prior to 1978, and Smith's own views and writings. For most students, the issue was not merely about a single painting, but about the broader symbolism of honoring religious figures whose institutions and they themselves have complicated histories regarding race. “As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable.” (1 Samuel 3:19 NLT) First Samuel 3:19 contains two extraordinary accolades regarding the prophet Samuel: “The Lord was with him” and “Everything Samuel said proved to be reliable” (nlt). But those accolades raise some important questions: Why Samuel? Why did the Lord choose to be with him? Why did the Lord make sure that everything he said proved to be reliable? The Bible doesn’t answer those questions directly, but it does offer some clues. Earlier in the chapter, we learn that, as a boy, Samuel served the Lord by assisting the priest Eli in the tabernacle. One night, while Samuel was sleeping, he heard someone call his name. Assuming that it was Eli, Samuel rushed to the priest to see how he could be of service. But it wasn’t Eli who had called him. Three times Samuel heard the voice. And three times he rushed to Eli. The fourth time Samuel heard his name called, he simply and humbly said, “Speak, your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10 NLT). Why did God use Samuel in such a powerful way? Probably because he was available—not just during business hours, but in the middle of the night, out of a dead slumber. He was eager to serve every time his name was called. Believers today can learn a lot from Samuel. We should always be available to be used by God. Our prayer should be, “Lord, You can use me anytime, anywhere, for any purpose—whether it’s my day off or not. I may be out surfing or on the golf course or out snowboarding, but I want You to call on me. I am always available to represent You. Please call on me.” Every Christian must be available and ready to echo the words of Samuel: “Speak, your servant is listening.” God is not looking for ability as much as He is looking for availability. You may think, “God only uses the really talented people. He will never use me. There’s not much I can offer Him.” But God is looking for someone simply to be available and to let Him be strong on their behalf. God isn’t looking for strong people. He is looking for weak people through whom He can be strong. That means every person is qualified to be used by God. That means God can use you. There is no telling how God will use you. But there are ways to make yourself available to Him. One is by putting yourself in the right place at the right time as much as possible. You can’t share your faith with others if you don’t interact or spend time with them. Another way to make yourself available to Him is to stay alert to the opportunities He sends your way. Are you available to be used by God? If not, why don’t you let the Lord know that you would like Him to call upon you? If Samuel’s story teaches us anything, it’s that God may call upon you before the night is over. In this message, Sam turns to Exodus 3 and 1 Samuel 3 to explore how God reveals Himself—not in spectacle, but in obscurity. Moses encounters holy fire in a desolate wilderness. Generations later, Samuel hears the voice of God in the quiet of the night, at a time when "the word of the Lord was rare." In both moments, heaven breaks in—but only the attentive recognize it. Moses is tending sheep in disappointment. Samuel is a young boy learning to discern a voice he does not yet understand. Neither setting feels dramatic. Both become holy. The turning point in each story is attentiveness. Moses says, "I must turn aside and see." Samuel responds, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Curiosity becomes the doorway to encounter. When Insurance Gets Between Doctors and PatientsDr. Elizabeth Ames and Dr. Caleb Bupp are deeply committed to their patients. But like so many clinicians today, they're spending an extraordinary amount of time battling insurance companies instead of practicing medicine.Between prior authorizations, step therapy requirements, and outright coverage denials, physicians and their teams are buried in paperwork, often at the direct expense of patient care. Time that should be spent listening, diagnosing, and treating is instead consumed by forms, phone calls, and appeals.Boston Globe reporter Jonathan Saltzman raised the concern and Dr. Ames brought it to my attention. The reporter talks about, a new program rolled out by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. The insurer says the initiative is designed to control rising healthcare costs for its 3 million members, noting that costs have increased by 30 percent since 2021. But, the program specifically targets physicians who bill for the most expensive visits. The reason for the increased expense, which is discussed in our podcast, is because doctors are choosing to spend more time with rare disease patients who have complicated health issues. They need to spend more time with complex medical needs patients than say, someone with a sore throat.Drs. Ames and Bupp warn that this approach fundamentally misunderstands patient care, particularly for those with complex or rare conditions. “These patients don't need less time; they need more” says Dr. Ames. Physicians argue that policies like this risk rushed appointments, strained doctor/patient relationships, and poorer outcomes. Nowhere is this more concerning than in the rare disease community, where delays and denials can be devastating.Dr. Elizabeth Ames and Dr. Caleb Bupp talk about what this looks like in real life. As pediatric geneticists, they see firsthand how insurance barriers impact families already navigating diagnostic odysseys, uncertainty, and fear. Their work sits at the intersection of cutting-edge science and deeply human stories, and insurance interference often disrupts both. Dr. Ames, “Usually we get faxes saying, this has been denied and we start working on it. But the family gets a letter that the drug they need, the process is delayed by a “no”. We try and have good communication and say, “hey, we got this denial,” we're working on it. But I think it's deaths by a thousand cuts for the family. Families take the denial as, “I'm not worth of coverage, and that's really hard”. Dr. Bupp says they have had to hire genetic counselors, a job that didn't exist even 5 years ago, “We have a job description in our organization for it now because of the complexities that come with trying to unravel these insurance situations”.We should also note that Dr. Ames, Dr. Bupp, and I all serve on the Rare Disease Advisory Council (RDAC) in Michigan. “I think rare disease advocacy, there is power in numbers. One person can be a huge difference maker, but it's not one plus one equals two. It really exponentially grows, and I think with things like rare disease advisory councils, that gives you a better connection within your state, for state government and for advocacy. And I also think, or I hope, that it gives a place for an individual to plug in and that can then magnify and amplify. their voice so that they're not alone”. Many states have RDAC's, You can see if your state has an RDAC. Michigan is home to approximately one million people living with rare diseases, and the RDAC was created to ensure their voices, and experiences help shape policy. Spencer Kuvin, an attorney representing multiple survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, publicly criticized Bill Gates for continuing to meet with Epstein even after the financier's conviction.
