Today on That Sober Guy Podcast, we're joined by a legend in the speaking and performance world, Joel Bauer. This dude has trained some of the most elite speakers, presenters, and marketers on the planet to monetize their life experience and create real influence, both on and offline. If you've ever seen someone captivate a room and thought, “How the hell do they do that?” - there's a good chance Joel's fingerprints are somewhere in their training. But here's where it gets real, Joel's not just about stage presence and sales. He's lived through and witnessed the dark side of addiction up close, and he's got some powerful wisdom for men who know they've got that “addictive personality” wiring. Instead of letting it wreck your life, Joel breaks down how to redirect that same intensity into something that actually serves you, your business, your relationships, your health, and your purpose. And, of course, we have a few laughs along the way, because if you can't laugh at the insanity of this crazy life, what's the point? A couple of key takeaways from today's episode: Your “addictive” tendencies aren't a curse, they're untapped potential when harnessed with the right structure and intention. Influence isn't about what you sell, it's about the truth you're willing to share and the transformation you've lived. If this episode hits home for you, don't go it alone. This week, we return to our series of Christian letters from history. Previously, we have looked at letters John Newton wrote about stages of the Christian life and a letter he wrote concerning corporate prayer. This week, we begin looking at a series of eight letters Newton wrote to a “Mrs. . —.” We do not have her name, as Newton removed most identifying information from the letters when he published them. But we do know some things about her. She lived in London and wrote to Newton early in his pastoral ministry. She was bothered about the indwelling nature and influence of sin in her life. Newton's counsel to her applies to every Christian who grieves their sin and desires a closer walk with Christ. As we work our way through this series, we will not discuss every letter he wrote to her. However, we will have the text of each letter available on our website for you to read. You don't have to wait week to week to see the letters. All eight letters are linked below for you to read and consider before listening to John discuss them week by week. You can read this week's letter here: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/first-leter-to-mrs You can read next week's letter here: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/second-letter-to-mrs Show Notes: Watch all the episodes of this series here: Read all eight letters to Mrs. First Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/first-leter-to-mrs Second Letters to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/second-letter-to-mrs Third Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/third-letter-to-mrs Fourth Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/fourth-letter-to-mrs Fifth Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/fifth-letter-to-mrs- Sixth Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/sixth-letter-to-mrs Seventh Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/seventh-letter-to-mrs Eighth Letter to Mrs.: https://www.mediagratiae.org/resources/eighth-letter-to-mrs Want to listen to The Whole Counsel on the go? Jennifer Sey, CEO of XX-XY Athletics has proclaimed October 10th (X X) as Real Women's Day.We at Love & Life are here for it!Jennifer encourages us to speak out—to be bold in our support and protection of women and girls.I have purchased several T-shirts from XX-XY Athletics. The statements on the shirts are logical and reasonable, yet at this chaotic time, they are often perceived as controversial by many people. I wear them to invite others to think. I want them to consider their positions. And, I want to advocate for women and girls. Because when men pretend to be women, they steal women's positions, championships, and scholarships. In effect, they erase women. In today's episode, our intern, Evelyn, joins me to share her thoughts, as a young Gen Z woman, on these concerns! We invite you to join us as we support Jennifer‘s campaign. Speak up! Stand up! And, maybe even wear a T-shirt, proclaiming your beliefs about sex, reality, and the importance of protecting women and girls!Evelyn also wrote a piece for us in honor of 10/10 Real Women's Day. Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
In this episode, Ruth and returning guest Jay Kim explore the intersection of technology and community within the church. They discuss the nuances of digital and in-person church experiences, the impact of the pandemic on church attendance and engagement, and the idea that “digital informs and analog transforms.” As always, they end by offering questions to ponder this week as it pertains to technology and community. Questions to ponder this week: What is the one barrier that keeps you from getting up and going and being with a church community? And then when you identify that barrier, is that barrier really worthwhile? In our community, for our community, what is appropriate for digitized delivery, or technological delivery and what must be done in person to be effective? We're back for Season 27, titled “Taming our Technologies: [Spiritual] Practices for a Digital Age.” This season we have a special co-host, pastor, author, and podcast host Jay Y. Kim! Jay will be joining Ruth all season long to explore the impact technology is having on our lives with God, our attention span, our parenting, our community, and our creativity. Jay and Ruth will wrestle with their own questions and wonderings about finding balance in using technology in good and helpful ways while also acknowledging its challenges. This season aims to be gracefully thought-provoking, practically helpful, and ultimately hopeful and encouraging. Jay Kim serves as lead pastor at West Gate Church in the Silicon Valley of California. He's the author of several books including Analog Christian, Analog Church, and Listen, Listen, Speak. Jay also hosts the Digital Examen podcast and much of his work focuses on the intersection of the digital age and spiritual formation. Mentioned in the episode: Analog Church by Jay Y. Have you ever ordered something online that looked perfect in the description, only to be completely disappointed when it arrived? Or struggled to explain to a sales associate exactly what you're looking for? Today, I'm sharing why building your style vocabulary is one of the most practical things you can do to make shopping easier, faster, and so much more successful. After 25 years of dressing women, I've seen how knowing the right words transforms the entire style experience. When you can name what you're looking for—whether it's a split v-neck blouse or palazzo pants—you stop wasting time, money, and mental energy on clothes that don't work. This episode breaks down why fluency in fashion terminology isn't about memorizing a dictionary—it's about empowering yourself to get the wardrobe you actually want.In this episode, you'll discover:The three compelling reasons why style vocabulary mattersThe essential categories of style terms that cover everythingMy favorite "vocabulary building in the wild" tactics that turn regular shopping trips into effortless learning opportunitiesThe critical difference between just knowing words and knowing how to USE themWhy retailers play fast and loose with definitions—and how to use this knowledge to your advantage I hope this episode helps you see that becoming style-fluent isn't about perfection or knowing every single term out there. It's about giving yourself the tools to communicate what you want, find what you need, and recreate looks that make you feel amazing. Most importantly, you'll spend less time in those frustrating "nothing looks good on me" spirals and more time feeling confident in clothes that truly work for your body and lifestyle. As parents, we know the words we say matter so much. But in the heat of the moment, many parents still find that angry or degrading words come pouring out. After these moments, hot tears of repentance stream down cheeks, and oaths are sworn. It will never happen again. Amy is a mother of nine, parenting coach, and writer in the Wild and Free community. She and I are going to explore how God's grace can cover angry words and how that grace can transform the words we speak. -From a child psychology perspective, why do the words that parents speak matter so much? Can it affect our kids' anxiety and depression? -What are some of the most damaging words and phrases a parent can use? -How do we repair when we've found we've used those words again? -In what way do we need to see ourselves to change the way we speak? -Does the way we talk to ourselves matter? (How does seeing ourselves held in grace matter?) -If a woman is starting to feel heavy with the thought of watching every little word that comes out of her mouth, what hope do you have to offer her? We all know the saying and the truth of how much we judge a book by its cover. I feel it is a dramatic metaphor for much of humanity. And I don't minimize it either. I feel it's our responsibility to address our “book covers.” I feel we are in a culture that gives a lot of attention to physical aesthetics. Whether it's how we look or the car we drive or the phone we have and clothes we wear and on and on. But I amaze myself with what seems a stark lack of attention to what's behind the physical accouterments. A big one is how we talk. How we communicate. My guest is communication expert, Michael Chad Hoeppner. Michael is an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and the CEO and president of GK Training, a firm dedicated to giving individuals and organizations better communication skills. He is a speaking coach to…a long list of incredibly impressive people and organizations. Michael is alone a leader among a growing chorus of voices identifying the link between the physical aspects of spoken communication and broader issues of health and wellness. He has a new book titled, Don't Say Um: How to Communicate Effectively to Live a Better Life. But as you'll hear, the title is a bit tongue in cheek. The concepts we discuss go far deeper than our cultural propensity to say, “um, er, like, and you know.” How we speak often gets us judged, for better or worse, much more than what we speak. But we don't get it. We are intent on what we are saying and talking about and miss how we are delivering it. But how we are communicating really does bely who we are. Using filler words and not addressing our body language doesn't just make us sound dumb, it honestly questions what level of personal security and confidence we actually have. This week we're reading the story of the call of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3:1-21 in which the young boy Samuel at first confuses the call of God with the voice of his mentor, Eli the priest. We discuss the process through which faith becomes our own as we, like Samuel, learn to distinguish the voice of God from the voice of our predecessors in the faith. But such differentiation can at times lead to conflict, as it does for Samuel when he realizes that God is preparing to punish Eli for his failure to correct and discipline his own sons, who have been harming the community of faith. And while we admire Samuel's comfortability sleeping in the presence of the ark of the covenant, we wonder whether it may be possible to feel too comfortable in God's presence, forgetting the gravity of the calling to which we have been called. Sometimes it may not be enough simply to be present. It is only when we say “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening,” that everything begins to change.
“Thy works, not mine, O Christ, Speak gladness to this heart; They tell me all is done, They bid my fear depart. To whom save Thee, Who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? “Thy righteousness, O Christ, Alone can cover me; No righteousness avails Save that which is of Thee. To whom save Thee, Who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?”
Hey there! It's Michael here — and welcome back to another Happy English Sunday Speak. I'm here every Sunday with a quick one-point tip to help you speak English more naturally.Sometimes, you need to ask someone to wait. In situations like this, you could say “Please wait a moment.” And sure, that's correct English — but it sounds a bit formal and not something we usually say to friends or coworkers. In everyday conversation, we have a more natural and friendly way to ask someone to wait: “Hang on.”Like, when you're on the phone and need to check something. You can say, “Hang on, let me grab my notes.”Or, if you're in the middle of doing something, and your friend says, “Hey, can you look at this?” You can say, “Hang on a second.”Even if someone's talking too fast, you can say, “Whoa, hang on! Say that again?”It's short, casual, and super natural. So next time instead of “Please wait a moment,” just say “Hang on.”And remember to like, follow, and subscribe so you won't miss the next Happy English Podcast and next week's Sunday Speak.
