Oriole Resources PLC CEO Martin Rosser talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) for the Bibemi Gold Project in Cameroon. Rosser confirmed a significant uplift in contained gold at Bakassi Zone 1 (BZ1), with the new estimate standing at 460,000oz—comprised of 100,000oz in the Indicated category and 360,000oz in the Inferred category. The average grade is just over two grams per tonne, based on a gold price of US$2,750/oz. The new figure represents a 23% increase compared to the January 2024 MRE and is based on just 7,000m of drilling. Rosser highlighted the strong conversion rate and noted the geometrically unified block's suitability as a starter pit. He also shared a new JORC exploration target across Bakassi Zones 1 and 2, as well as Lawa East and West, estimating an additional 145,000oz to 400,000oz of contained gold. Discussing mineral processing, Rosser said: “It bodes well for the ongoing next steps.” He detailed test work from SGS and CS Solutions, which supported a proposed flow sheet achieving around 85% gold recovery through flotation, pressure oxidation, and cyanide leaching. Looking ahead, the company will begin preliminary economic assessment studies and advance its exploitation license application with the Cameroonian government. Lira Ndifon ignites a firestorm, dissecting the global backlash against Captain Ibrahim Traoré and the relentless battle for Africa's liberation. This isn't just news; it's a battle cry for unity, a demand for sovereignty, and a reckoning with the forces that seek to control the continent's destiny.Lira's opening is a direct challenge, a call to action for every African, every listener, to wake up and engage. She cuts through the noise, demanding answers and sparking a conversation that echoes the urgency of the moment. At the heart of this episode is the explosive controversy surrounding Captain Ibrahim Traoré's leadership and the accusations hurled by a US General. Lira dissects the narrative, exposing the double standards and the historical patterns of Western interference that have plagued Africa for centuries. This isn't just about one leader; it's about the soul of a continent fighting for its right to self-determination.Lira plays a damning clip of a US Congressional hearing, laying bare the power dynamics at play. She doesn't shy away from naming names, from challenging the hypocrisy, and from exposing the tactics used to maintain control. This isn't a history lesson; it's a live autopsy of neocolonialism. But this isn't just about external forces. Lira turns the lens inward, challenging Africans to confront their own roles in perpetuating the status quo. She plays a powerful speech by Captain Traoré, a rallying cry against fear and a testament to the power of unity.Lira connects Traoré's courage to the hopes and dreams of a generation yearning for authentic leadership. She doesn't mince words, she doesn't sugarcoat the stakes. This is a life-or-death struggle for the future of Africa. In a direct address to her Cameroonian brothers and sisters, Lira issues a stark ultimatum: demand change, seize your destiny, or be condemned to repeat the past. She uses Traoré's example as a blueprint for a new era of African leadership, a beacon of hope in a sea of despair. The episode culminates in a powerful call to action for the youth of Africa. Lira challenges them to rise up, to reclaim their narrative, and to build a legacy of innovation and liberation. She ends with a plea to armed groups, a desperate cry for peace, a stark reminder of the human cost of endless conflict. This isn't just a podcast; it's a movement. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Critique our position - Sickle cell anaemia in sub-Saharan Africa (Cameroon), published by EffectiveHelp - Cameroon on August 19, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. There is a good post exploring sickle cell disease, here: [Cause Exploration Prizes] Sickle Cell Disease - EA Forum (effectivealtruism.org). This is a good starting point before reading this one. Effective Help[1] is a small EA-inspired Cameroonian[2] organization trying to identify local cost-effective projects. We analysed data from 39 local projects and found one standing out, a small monthly cash transfer to families with a child or more suffering from sickle cell anaemia. We decided to partner with the NGO carrying out this project and raise funds for it. We think this is a good way forward for us. Please go through our thinking below and tell us how to improve. Questions: 1. How bad is sickle cell anaemia in Sub-Saharan Africa (Cameroon in particular) for those who suffer it? 2. Are cash transfers to families with children suffering from this problem a cost-effective form of reducing mortality and improving quality of life? Our position: We don't think this is as cost-effective as some of the best causes globally, but we think it compares much better to other local NGOs in Cameroon and to other projects in crowdfunding sites, so we are comfortable raising more funds away from less cost-effective causes and towards this one. The worst that can happen is that we transfer funds to a poor family, at a slightly higher cost than GiveDirectly (because of the small scale of the project, overhead is proportionally higher) and the best is that we save children from early deaths and make them win years of life with as little as 49USD a month (588 a year). We also think the first family identified has such a brutal story, which we won't share here, that the children are significantly worse-off than the average children with sickle cell in Cameroon. We think the effect of the first donations securing the next 3 years of transfers for this family should be higher than if the project had a larger scale and covered hundreds of families systematically. On the other hand, there is a point to be made about prioritizing families when the child is between 1 and 3 years of age and mortality peaks, and this specific family has already passed that stage. You can check out the project on this page. Help children with sickle cell syndrome - GlobalGiving and other sickle-cell projects in GlobalGiving here: Search - GlobalGiving How bad is sickle cell anaemia? We have much better data from developed countries. Life expectancy with sickle cell anaemia could be 42 years for males and 48 for women, as opposed to 75 and 82.[3] Sickle cell-hemoglobin C disease is a bit better: 60 for males and 68 for females. One of the studies we use as a reference followed 3,764 patients of different ages[4], and included investigation on 209 patients who died. 33% of those who died, died during an acute sickle crisis, and there was a high correlation between early death and some key symptoms of sickle cell anaemia: acute chest syndrome, renal failure, and seizures. The information available tells us those living with sickle cell are very likely already to have a shorter life, even when they are accessing good treatment. This is sad and may reduce potential cost-effectiveness for our project (even in the best circumstances, patients tend to live less). How much of the danger can be mitigated with treatment? How much worse is it without treatment? Without treatment or with bad treatment most children die without reaching adulthood. As late as 1973, the median survival age was reported to be 14 years, and 20% of children died within two years. So, we think regular treatment can more than triple life expectancy, over time adding 28 years to someo...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: This chart is right. Most interventions don't do much. (Cameroon experience), published by EffectiveHelp - Cameroon on August 16, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This chart is so right. The local charity environment in Cameroon is probably helping much less people than you imagine. We ran an effectiveness contest that aligns with this research perfectly. In 2021 we created an EA group in Cameroon. We had multiple seminars covering the basics of Effective Altruism. By the end of 2022, the group got so excited that we created a charity. "We" are a group of humanitarian/development workers in Cameroon, all currently employed in this field of work. Some of the basic EA principles resonated a lot. Such as the feeling that some activities and projects don't really help much and that somewhere, sometimes, there is "real impact". So we created this charity to help steer organizations towards real impact, and help them become "more effective". We tried a couple of things: We offered consultancy services, starting for free, to local charities. We started a contest to find the best projects in Cameroon. The first thing did not work. See footnote. [1] [1] Now about the contest, we think this is relevant to share. The contest helped us confirm this global analysis, some things just work miles away from others, and some organizations are dedicated to things that aren't very useful. We wish there was a nicer way of saying it. We had 21 submissions in the first year. We designed a simple way to evaluate and compare projects: We divided into 3 categories (health, human rights, and economic) and took all organizations' reports at face value. Based on their own data, there was a huge divide between top performers and lowest performers. Then we did field surveys to verify the claimed results of the top 6 and we had our 3 winners, with only one organization really meeting expectations. Main finding: There was no correlation between experience and effect or grant size and effect, it is as if organizations don't get more effective with experience and professionalism. If anything the correlation is negative. We think this is because organizations get more effective at capturing donor funding not at providing a better service. They only get real valuable feedback from donors who decide to fund them or not. So organizations will focus and implement projects based on what donors appear to want, which sometimes may be connected to the most meaningful effects on the people they serve, but not necessarily. Details: First, we had two organizations just applying for funding instead of presenting project results. This happens, just a reminder that it is all about donor funding in the end and that sometimes people don't read. The general tendency was that organizations follow donor trends and work to teach people things they probably already know: Multiple menstrual health projects translated into a tiny economic transfer (free pads to cover 2 or 3 months) and some lessons either girls already know or they were very likely to be about to find out. "Child Protection" is another hot term, particularly in humanitarian contexts, but it was not very clear what people were being taught about and how that helped anyone. Sexual reproductive health was also very common but products are available and cheap and it is unlikely the information is that new to Cameroonian girls and women right now. HIV rates in the target areas aren't as high as in other countries, and when we ran the numbers it was unlikely even one infection was averted with these projects. "inclusion" of persons with disability in the health sector was a beautiful project with multiple complex activities but had no visible effects on people, with disabilities or not. It involved mostly training health workers, but it is important to unders...

As we approach the start of the Summer Olympics in Paris, we get heavy into the Team USA lineup and how Anthony Edwards has the big confidence going into the games. Rob also brings up the question about whether or not Joel Embiid should be on Team USA considering he's been a US citizen less than two years. Rob says he should NOT be on the team but is probably playing for the US, instead of Cameroon, because it's his best chance to win gold. And we argue extensively about who we believe should make up the starting five for Team USA. Paul George breaks down the circumstances that lead to him leaving the Clippers for Philly, and how disrespected he felt by the offers LA put on the table. Rob also feels like Philly was a better landing spot than Golden State, which is where PG almost landed in a sign-and-trade. Plus Steph finally spoke out about losing Klay, and we all believe that while Klay didn't get a heritage contract, Steph Curry would definitely get that deal to stay. We also ask Rob how disappointed he is in the Lakers free agency moves, and he says the Lakers are fine because no one ever wants to help them. And we debate if the Caleb Martin move is indicative of the Heat's decline, a shout out to Angel Reese for breaking a WNBA record, and a cool Big Shot of the Week to a 4th of July hero. Plus it's the return of Walmart or Waffle House!

But what took many people by surprise was the Spanish football federation's decision to slap the player with a two-match ban for the confrontation. It's not the first time European football has been rocked by a racism scandal. Last year, seven people were arrested for a similar incident against Real Madrid and Brazilian star Vinicius Junior.
