Muckraking During The Early 1900's by The Progressive Era by Period 1 US History
In the early 1900s, it became clear to many women that they would never receive the right to vote unless they began to take action and fight for it. Two women, Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul, were at the forefront of this battle. These two women, although fighting for the same cause, had different ways of going about the fight. Catt took a more subtle approach when advocating for women's suffrage while Paul took a more radical approach. Catt, Paul, and other suffragists ultimately succeed in their efforts when they gained the right to vote in August of 1920.

This podcast describes how city government and elections changed during the progressive era. We discuss the corruption before the progressive era including people voting multiple times, using colored ballots, and the candidates counting there own votes. There is detail about the changes that were made to fix this corruption and how election and city government evolved to be more efficient and fair.
Our podcast is based around Roosevelt's Square Deal. In this Square Deal, he worked to protect the consumer and the environment. The three aspects of the Square Deal that he used to win the 1904 election were: limiting the power of trusts, promoting public health and safety, and improving the working conditons as a whole.
In 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company of New York City caught fire, creating panic through the streets of New York. In an attempt to flee the fire, the workers tried to escape through the stairwells, elevators, and eventually through jumping out the windows. Starting on the 8th floor, the fire soon spread through the building killing more than 140 innocent workers. In response to the fire, lawmakers worked to tackle the conditions of the factory and to create the strictest fire safety codes the nation had ever seen.
