Welcome to today's episode, where we're taking a moment to reflect on the significance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed every year on March 21st. This day holds deep historical meaning, as it commemorates a tragic moment in history: on this day in 1960, police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire on peaceful protesters, killing 69 people who were demonstrating against the discriminatory apartheid "pass laws." In this particular podcast, we pay particular attention to the Khoi and San people, and we ask activist Simon Witbooi(Nama) about their place in the new South Africa. We kick off the anti-discrimination mini-series with international best-selling author, consultant, and workplace anti-discrimination advocate Jacquie Abram. Jacquie shares her powerful and deeply personal journey experiencing many years of racial discrimination in the workplace, a journey that inspired her book series "Hush Money." We discuss the trauma she's endured and how she's turned her experiences into a resource for others facing similar challenges.Jacquie talks about the importance of breaking the cycle of workplace discrimination and instead, recognizing and addressing the root issues. Her approach to advocacy is meticulous and informed by her nearly 20-year career in higher education, which has left her both traumatized and highly knowledgeable. Through her consultancy work, Jackie helps individuals understand and articulate their experiences, develop compelling complaints, and confront toxic work environments.Jacquie and Whitney discuss some of the strategic advice on self-advocacy that Jacquie expands on in her books, including the importance of creating an arsenal of evidence from day one and using follow-up emails to document verbal praise or harmful incidents. These methods are crucial for countering claims of incompetence that often arise as a camouflage to discrimination. Jacquie also opens up about the mental health impact of workplace toxicity, something that's deeply resonant. Her emphasis on recognizing and dealing with the trauma of such environments is invaluable. The discussion sheds light on the covert nature of modern workplace racism and discrimination, including concepts like "workplace mobbing," where an employee is targeted and pressured by a leader and their enlistees. Jacquie's resilience is awe-inspiring; despite facing multiple career derailments and financial instability, she's managed to secure significant settlements against abusive employers and continue her fight against workplace discrimination. This conversation is not merely an exploration of Jacquie's experiences but a powerful resource for anyone facing racial discrimination at work. Im truly grateful to Jacquie for sharing her story and insights on this platform. To get help or reach out to Jacquie, find her on LinkedIn. She will respond! This conversation takes place in the context of the 50-year anniversary of the MFP at the American Nurses Association, offering a unique perspective from a current fellow on the continuing importance of the program in addressing unmet behavioral health needs in underserved communities.Alice shares her story of immigrating to the U.S. in 2017 and how her early life experiences, being born under China's one-child policy and adopted as an infant, shaped her commitment to healthcare. Initially trained as a civil engineer, Alice decided to pursue nursing after witnessing the mental health struggles of patients and healthcare workers during the pandemic. Now working in Colorado, she serves low-income women and children from minority backgrounds, focusing on mental health care for those with significant trauma histories. In a particularly powerful segment, Alice reflects on how the rise of anti-Asian sentiment during the pandemic marked her first experience with racism. This personal encounter profoundly deepened her empathy for patients who face racism regularly, giving her a new understanding of how racial discrimination impacts mental health. Her insights underscore the critical need to consider these factors when providing care to underserved populations.Alice also highlights how the Minority Fellowship Program has been instrumental in her professional development, providing a sense of community and support that reignited her passion for nursing. The program has empowered her to think beyond direct patient care, inspiring her to consider research and policy work aimed at reducing mental health disparities in marginalized communities. This episode offers a thoughtful exploration of how personal experience, cultural competence, and programs like the MFP are essential in addressing the behavioral health needs of underserved populations. Race has played a huge role in the creation of mass homeownership in the United States. Discriminatory housing practices including redlining, exclusionary zoning and whitewashing led to great disparities in home ownership among White and Black homeowners. Despite the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, the damage had been done to communities of color and the rates of Black homeownership. Mass homeownership actually changed the definition, perception and value of race, according to a new book called The Residential is Racial: A Perceptual History of Mass Homeownership. In it, University of Chicago scholar Adrienne Brown documents the unexplored history of mass homeownership and how it still plays out today. An associate professor in the Department of English and the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity, Brown is also the author of The Black Skyscraper: Architecture and the Perception of Race.

The Race Soldiers received sentences ranging from 10 to 40 years respectively - although they could have received the death penalty for committing these crimes "under the color of law" - meaning practicing White Supremacy while wearing a police badge. The sentencing happened about a week after a Pearl, Mississippi enforcement official, Racist Suspect Michael Green, was accused of forcing a black male to lick urine from the jail floor. And all this was beautifully timed for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which happens every March 21st.
