A cancelled election, a cancelled candidate and a divided country – is Romania's democracy under threat?Last December the country's Constitutional Court cancelled the presidential election two days before the final vote, citing outside interference, with the nationalist pro-Putin candidate, Calin Georgescu, riding high in the polls. TikTok sensation and portraying himself as an outsider, Georgescu's anti-EU and anti-NATO message resonated with an unhappy electorate. His sudden success was unprecedented, as was the cancelation of a European democratic election. The political establishment claim that cyberwarfare and Russian interference gave them no choice. When your favourite hockey team loses the playoffs, you don't fire all the players… you hire a new coach. Let's take a look at the Liberal Party, before and after Mark Carney resurrected its legacy. Canadians set a new record at the advanced polls over Easter weekend, but do voters have enough information to make an informed decision, given that Pierre Poilievre has yet to release a fully costed platform? In Episode 124 of The Bill Kelly Podcast, Bill discusses the upcoming Canadian Election 2025, reflecting on the significant changes in leadership within the Liberal Party and the implications for the Conservative Party. He analyzes polling trends, the importance of transparency in political platforms, and the public's response to the new leadership under Mark Carney. The conversation emphasizes the need for accountability and scrutiny in political discourse as Canadians prepare to vote.Join this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUbzckOLocFzNeY1D72iCA/joinDon't forget to like, follow and subscribe across our channels! As the election campaign enters its final week, Liberal Leader Mark Carney releases his party's health-care platform at an event in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The plan focuses on building new hospitals, growing the health work force, modernizing the system, investing in women's health and reproductive rights, as well as increasing support for mental health care and substance abuse treatment. Carney also comments on the passing of Pope Francis, who died Monday morning at the age of 88. Delivering introductory remarks are Sean Casey, Liberal candidate for Charlottetown, and Greg Naterer, vice-president, academic and research at the University of Prince Edward Island. Carney faces questions from reporters on the Liberal party's election platform, which promises $130 billion in new spending while running deficits until at least the fiscal year 2028-2029. With one week until election day, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre holds a news conference in Scarborough, Ont., and lays out his party's housing plan. He pledges that a Conservative government would build 2.3 million new homes over the next five years. Poilievre also comments on the passing of Pope Francis, who died this morning at 88 years old. SEASON 3 EPISODE 119: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Senator Lisa Murkowski may be the most important person in the country right now. Her public confession that she too is afraid of the Trump nightmare and her HINTS at talking to Senate colleagues ABOUT her fear – could provide just enough Republican rebellion to rein Trump in. It feels as if she just got it, as if she just understood that yes Trump is Nazi-esque and yes Trump often emulates the Soviets but the closest parallel to him is O'Brien and "The Party" in Orwell's "1984" and the simple terrifying conviction that "the object of power is power." That's why I think when Kristi Garden Noem and Secretary of Defense (and Vodka) Hegseth (if he's still on the job after ANOTHER Signal chat came to light) file their report on the border to Trump this week and tell him no, they don't need to invoke The Insurrection Act, he may do it anyway because... the object of power is power. Murkowski and thirteen other Republican Senators and at most four Republican Representatives can stop this. They can save the country. They can impeach Trump or if they still can’t get over the hump, the 18 of you can use the THREAT to impeach him, to virtually fetter him, to at least control the width and breadth of his damage, to make him know the Senate WILL vote against him. She can also talk to anybody on the Supreme Court except Alito or Thomas. The other seven, in the middle of the damn night - at 1 AM Saturday - stepped in to freeze any further disappearing Americans under the phony premise of The Alien Enemies Act. And there is reason to hope that these Murkowski-led conversations might happen before the iron curtain of dictatorship descends: Later in her confession of fear, she hinted at doing exactly what I just suggested. Meanwhile, how many times can you self-destruct on this? Gavin Newsom dismisses the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case as a "distraction" and calls Democrats sheep for defending the constitution. On the other hand, Senator Ed Markey is crafting a sense of the senate resolution stating Trump cannot again be elected, and cannot again serve, as president or vice president. Damn Straight. B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Musk Crappertruck Owner who claims to also be a "girl dad"; Pennsylvania congressman Dan Meuser kinda blames Governor Josh Shapiro's criticizing Trump for provoking the attempt to incinerate him and his family in the governor's mansion on Passover. And Trump DEI hire Pam Bondi lies that compulsive martyr and 85th Place Olympic Trials finisher Riley Gaines "went to the Olympics." Not unless she bought a ticket, Pam Blondie. C-Block (55:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The renewed Trump bid to ban the Associated Press got me talking to a friend: How MANY times have I been banned, as a reporter? Do you mean this century, or in total? It's... a lot. From the LA Clippers to the ESPN Campus, I've been banned... a lot. And je ne regret rien!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The stage seems just about set for us to get the answer from the Supreme Court whether it will permit the judiciary to get rolled by an administration looking to use the label "foreign policy" to avoid all accountability. Elsewhere, the administration's campaign to take control of large civil institutions hit a roadblock with a pushback from Harvard. After being sworn in as the 47th president, President Donald Trump quickly altered American government – and political discourse. He issued a slew of executive orders that affected how American government functions and he spoke about officers of the government, federal agencies, executive power, the press, the Constitution, and the rule of law in ways that surprised citizens, journalists, and many scholars. Postscript has devoted three podcasts to how professional historians have assessed Trump's actions. Today, we look at how political scientists understand the second Trump presidency and how they have organized to amplify their concerns. Over 1200 trained political scientists signed a statement that lays out alarming changes to American government – and today's podcast features the incoming president of the American Political Science Association, Dr. Susan Stokes, to discuss the statement and what it means for so many political scientists to sign it. With her forthcoming book, The Backsliders: Why Leaders Undermine Their Own Democracies (Princeton University Press), Sue Stokes is the perfect person to assess democratic erosion and autocracy. Our conversation provides insights into the state of American politics, resources for people who want to oppose democratic erosion, and particular suggestions for teachers – and sneak peak into her new book. This week, we're taking a close look at the state of the NRA. The nation's largest gun-rights group is not nearly as large as it was half a decade ago. President Donald Trump just bailed on its conference. However, its civil corruption suit is now over, and its latest board election is in the books. To give us a detailed view of where the NRA is at today, we've got freelance reporter John Petrolino on the show. John often writes for Shooting News Weekly and Bearing Arms. He recently did a great breakdown of the NRA election for the latter. John said the reformers, who now go by NRA 2.0, won a sizeable victory and should have a significant majority headed into next weekend's NRA Annual Meeting. Other longtime board members and defenders of former CEO Wayne LaPierre, many of whom are now part of what's called Strong NRA, did not fare as well. But John noted those who didn't run under the banner of either group did the worst of all. He also said some prominent board members, like New York State Rifle and Pistol Association president Tom King, lost their bids. John said he was a bit surprised by some of the results, but he believes the board's partisanship may not last. He said both sides have made calls for unity, however hard that might end up being. Special Guest: John Petrolino.
Ashley Casciato from Innisfil, Ont., says she's struggling to make ends meet, yet still sees herself as middle class — and she's not alone. With the federal election just a week away, many Canadians are feeling the pressure of a rising cost of living that's putting homeownership and the traditional middle-class lifestyle increasingly out of reach. We explore how the definition of “middle class” is changing and what party leaders should do to make life more affordable.
Guest: Toronto Star reporter Alex Boyd As Canada heads toward a federal election, the online information landscape is getting messier, more manipulated, and harder to recognize in real time. From repurposed Facebook groups to shady digital operations selling conspiracy-laced content and merch, these tactics are designed to grab attention and slowly shift public opinion. We talk about the strange case of the local buy and sell group in Hamilton, that morphed, almost overnight, into a far-right pro-Trump hub. Produced by Saba Eitizaz, Paulo Marques and Sean Pattendon

One week from today Canadians will cast their ballots to pick their next government, in what has been described as an existential election amid U.S. President Trump's trade and sovereignty threats. As we enter the final stretch of the campaign, parties are shifting their strategies to ensure they get supporters to the polls and secure every vote they can. What can we expect from the parties in these final days, can we see a major shift in the polls and could leaders lose their jobs? Host Cormac Mac Sweeney is breaking it down with Lori Williams of Mount Royal University. We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. Nightlife News Breakdown with Philip Clark, joined by Amy Remeikis, Chief Political Analyst at the Australia Institute.
It's that time of year again... Election season, tax season, and the perfect storm of propaganda, division, and stress. In today's episode, I'm breaking down how to stay healthy, sane, and focused when the world feels like it's falling apart. We get told who to hate, who to blame, and the media tries to keep us angry, anxious, and distracted — but you don't have to fall for it. I'm diving into the real tactics I use to survive the madness: Why focusing on personal excellence and self-development is the real rebellion How to be a positive impact instead of just adding to the noise Understanding that most of what you see in the news is completely backwards from reality Why politicians aren't heroes — they're just flawed humans like the rest of us Plus — setting social media timers to protect your mind and energy And yeah... we even touch on that wild leaked group chat where so-called "leaders" were joking about bombing Yemen like it's a video game. This is who we're being told to trust? This episode is all about cutting through the chaos and becoming the kind of person who doesn't just survive crazy seasons — you rise through them. Let's get into it. If you liked the show, help it grow! Leave a review and rate 5 stars on Apple Podcast, and Spotify!
Australians love a ‘battler’. Images of shearers, Anzacs, and gold diggers are deeply entrenched in our history. Politicians know that too. Why else do we see them in hard hats and high visibility vests? But a couple of moments in this election campaign have hit a nerve. Presenting Machines Like Us, a Globe and Mail podcast on technology and people. We're a few weeks into a federal election that is currently too close to call. And while most Canadians are wondering who our next Prime Minister will be, host Taylor Owen and his guests today are preoccupied with a different question: will this election be free and fair?In her recent report on foreign interference, Justice Marie-Josée Hogue wrote that “information manipulation poses the single biggest risk to our democracy”. Meanwhile, senior Canadian intelligence officials are predicting that India, China, Pakistan and Russia will all attempt to influence the outcome of this election. To try and get a sense of what we're up against, Owen wanted to get two different perspectives on this. Aengus Bridgman is the Director of the Media Ecosystem Observatory, a project that they run together at McGill University, and Nina Jankocwicz is the co-founder and CEO of the American Sunlight Project. Bridgman and Jankocwicz are two of the leading authorities on the problem of information manipulation. This episode was originally published on April 8, 2025.
Host Piya Chattopadhyay sets up the final week of the federal election campaign with political journalists Rob Russo, Emilie Nicolas and Ryan Jespersen, The Beaverton's Luke Gordon Field and The Onion's Christine Wenc talk about the craft of satire in an age of misinformation, linguist Michael Erard reflects on what our first and last words say about us, and The Sunday Magazine's Howard Goldenthal looks at the legacy of the Cambodian genocide.Discover more at cbc.ca/sunday

(Note: This episode is from Tonight with Dr. Steve's special Thursday livestream.)The woke left is in absolute meltdown mode. As their last hope of overturning the MAGA revolution crumbles, I walk you through why they're really panicking. From the SAVE Act shaking up voter integrity to Trump's executive orders targeting mail-in ballots and voting machines, the left is watching their playbook go up in flames. I also break down the tidal wave of election reform bills sweeping across Republican-led states, and why the left's fear isn't about “voter suppression” - it's about political extinction. In the second part of this episode, we talk about how the war on woke education just escalated. From New Hampshire to Colorado to Texas, school officials are clinging to Marxist ideologies like CRT and radical gender theory, openly breaking the law to continue indoctrinating our children. I'm joined by Todd Kessler from Centner Academy, one of the few institutions charting a different course - one rooted in excellence, resilience, and true education. We discuss the profound impact that this learning approach has on students and the solutions to our decaying schools. Harry talks with Mark Tushnet, the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law, Emeritus at Harvard Law School, and one of the country's leading constitutional scholars. After a brief discussion about his new book, “Who Am I To Judge,” the two dive in to the law and politics of the Trump administration assault on elite universities, in particular Harvard and Columbia. Tushnet explains why he thinks that the Administrations' broad-gauged demands are unconstitutional on several grounds, including a somewhat underdeveloped principle in the law of fit between Government objection and proposed remedy, i.e. here that the administration is stating concerns about antisemitism to justify an extremely broad range of demanded changes. Tushnet describes the fervent opposition on campus and in the Harvard alumni community to the Administration's demands, and lays out Harvard's overall strategic thinking in the short, medium, and long terms. The two then turn to the very different response from Columbia, including discussion of the Administration's apparent consideration of a very novel approach to continuing supervision of the university under the model previous Departments of Justice have employed for corrupt police departments.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
