    5. Top 10 Archaeological Finds of 2023 (and 3 Important Ones)

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2024 34:04

2023 was a year full of incredible archaeological finds, and it was the first year that I started covering archaeology content. Choosing just 10 was quite difficult, so I have included 3 extras that I think are extremely important but a bit less flashy. I know this one is a bit late, but I got hit with COVID that caused an infection of the cochlea at the end of 2023, causing me to be bedridden for about 10 days. I hope you enjoy this episode, and If you want more there are links to my social media accounts, where I post every day, as well as a link to the YouTube version of this episode and my second gaming channel. These take an enormous amount of time to put together between my research and archaeological fieldwork jobs. I hope to one day do this on a full-time basis, so thank you so much for supporting me in this early stage and checking out this episode of Unearthing History. I appreciate you. 4. Did Humans Evolve in Europe?

Scientific evidence indicates that the physical and behavioral characteristics common to all humans can be traced back to ape-like predecessors beginning around 6 million years ago. But where did this happen? Where did the human journey begin? In a new paper titled 'A new ape from Türkiye and the radiation of late Miocene hominines', Sevim-Erol et al., describe a new species of ape that existed in modern day Türkiye approximately 7 million years ago, and argue the possibility of a European origin for an early pre-human ancestor. Today we're going to take a look at some of the context surrounding this new paper including some of the apes of Europe and Africa that predate human ancestors, the description of the new species, and the teams argument why this new species might indicate an out-of-Europe migration. Podcast listeners! First and foremost, thank you all SO MUCH for listening to the podcast! The number of listens has blown me completely away and I'm extremely sorry that I have been so slow to bring you all a new episode. This weeks update features ritual beheadings, child sacrifice, ancient DNA, a blood red amphitheater, inter-familial Ancient Egyptian relations, a 'vampire' child in Poland and the oldest village ever discovered in Europe. These take a long time to do. Even just news updates are somewhere between 5-10 hours of research and voice recording, and another 10 hours of editing for YouTube. So please, if you like the content, consider checking out YouTube channel. It's currently the only form of content monetization available to me and I would love to move towards doing this full-time one day. Some time around 65,000 years ago a group of people made the treacherous jorney to an incredible, dangerous, and unique land. They didn't know it at the time, but they were the first people to ever conolonize a continent by sea, and they became, the First Australians. This is the archaeological story of what we know about the first people to come to Australia. In this episode I discuss the evidence that tells us how and when it happened, what Australia was like back then, and the controversies surrounding the digs at Australias oldest archaeological site, Madjedbebe. I would like to acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people of Australia, particularly the Mirrar people whose cultural heritage this episode is focused on.
