Back in Episode 11 we met Amy Perry, an NQT who graduated from the University of South Wales and now working in her first teaching role! We wanted to follow Amy through her first year in teaching, tracking the highs and low and all the things she learns along the way. Well she's back! Amy joined Scott to catch up on the first term, what's gone well and what she found hard! Amy also shares some pieces of advice she would give to future NQTs for their first term. Amy is as fantastically articulate, honest and lovely as ever, if you're an NQT of a current student teacher this episode is a must listen! You can follow Amy on Twitter @MissPerry_NQT, and as ever you can find Scott @MrHannTeach, Sarah @SmartTeaching20 and Mrs H @MrsH_primary - but of course don't forget to follow the podcast @vision4teaching!
In this episode we're joined by Adam Jones, a friend of the show who is part of the trio behind Not In The Textbook! You can find them on Twitter @Notinthetextbo1 where you'll find links to their YouTube channel and blogs too. Scott chatted with Adam about being a student teacher during COVID times and what impact that has had, as well as his hopes for his future career. Adam also talks about Not In The Textbook, where the idea came from and where he sees the future of this venture! Once you've listened, follow Adam on Twitter @USWMrJones and follow the Vision for Teaching crew @vision4teaching. You can of course follow them individually too @MrHannTeach, @SmartTeaching20 and @MrsH_primary
Scott and Mrs H do not like interviews! Simple as that! However, they both know that interviews are necessary and unavoidable to secure a new teaching job! In this episode we share our experiences and give useful tips for anybody getting ready for an interview. Mrs H also shares some inside knowledge as she has interviewed as a Governor previously, and Scott shares his knowledge of being an interviewer in a previous career. Loads of tips and advice that will hopefully both help you prepare and put your mind at ease before the big day! One of the most stressful aspects of being a student or an NQT is the observations - we still remember like it was yesterday! In this episode Scott and Mrs H discuss how to prepare for your NQT observation, things to consider and how to (hopefully) take the positives from the process! Special mention to the lovely Sarah who is missing from this episode - we miss you Sarah! Have you been observed recently? Maybe you have an observation booked and you've started planning for it? In this episode Scott and Mrs H discuss the biggest issue on everyone's minds right now - COVID-19! We talk about our experiences in school during the last few months, what impact it's had on us and students, and what we've done to try and support them. Big shout out to @AdrianBethune who's book "Wellbeing in the Primary Classroom" is promoted (quite heavily) by Scott. Well worth a follow on Twitter! Special mention to the lovely Sarah who is missing from this episode - we miss you Sarah! Continuing with our exploration of the Professional Teaching Standards in Wales, this week we break down and discuss the Blended Learning Experiences standard. Found under Pedagogy > Advancing Learning strand, we hope this episode helps you make sense of the standard as well as giving you some ideas for experiences you could write about in your PLPs. As always, please drop us a tweet and let us know what you think @vision4teaching.
We've been asked many times if we can give NQTs some ideas or guidance on writing experiences in their Professional Learning Passports. So we've decided to explore each standard individually, break it down and discuss it and then hopefully give you some ideas for experiences you could write about. The first one we've chosen to explore is Assessment, found under Pedagogy > Refining Teacher in the Professional Teaching Standards in Wales. We hope you find it useful, please drop us a tweet and let us know what you think @vision4teaching. Which standards would you like us to explore next? Drop us a tweet or a message and we'll be sure to explore it in the near future!
Since starting this podcast we have always liked the idea of tracking the journey of an NQT through their first year - journaling the ups and down, what they've enjoyed and learned and ultimately what advice they can pass on to future NQTs. We're so pleased that this idea is now a reality - this year we'll be following Miss Amy Perry in the 'Diary of an NQT' series. In this episode we meet Amy and get to know a bit about her, including what she is most looking forward to about getting started in the classroom! We'll be catching up again with Amy at the end of the Autumn term to see if everything's gone as she expected. You can follow Amy on Twitter @MissPerry_NQT, and of course you can follow us @MrHannTeach, @SmartTeaching20 and @MrsH_primary. Don't forget to follow the podcast @vision4teaching and let us know what you think!

In this episode Scott, Sarah and Mrs H discuss the art of behaviour management! An area of teaching that is always much-feared by student teachers and NQTs, you'll hear what strategies have worked well for us, what Sarah has found useful as a supply teacher and our thoughts on reward systems and getting children's attention. What strategies do you use? What would you never try again? Maybe you've got strategies that we didn't mention in this episode? You can also follow us individually @SmartTeaching20, @MrsH_primary and @MrHannTeach.
As you get ready to start your NQT year you might be wondering what others will think of you. Will you have a really supportive mentor? Do you still have lesson observations? What other support will you get from outside of your school? What is different if you do your NQT year as a supply teacher? In this episode we are joined by the wonderful Chloe Butcher, an experienced teacher, External Verifier (EV) and NQT Professional Learning Day lead. We discuss all things related to being an NQT and Chloe gives her expert inside knowledge on what you can expect from your mentor and EV, as well as some very useful advice that she would give herself back at the start of her career. How do you use 'pupil/learner voice'? Do I have to write lesson plans? Scott, Sarah and Mrs H talk all things planning, including tips and advice that they have picked up during their NQT year. Hopefully this will answer some questions you may have, as well as giving you a few pointers to get you started. We've talked a lot about your NQT year, but how do you get started? What will that first term be like? Or the first day? What sort of things do I need to be thinking about now ready for my first week? Do I need to change all of my display board before 1st September? What about if I'm on supply? What will it be like going to a school for the first time? All of these questions will be buzzing around the head of an NQT right now - we know because we were the same! In this episode we discuss all of those things and more, hopefully settling some of the nerves you may be feeling whilst answering some burning questions. We know we can't fit everything into one episode so this is just part one - if there are topics or questions that you'd like us to cover in part two then please let us know @vision4teaching on Twitter! Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and follow us on Twitter, and keep giving us your feedback! We are always so grateful for any feedback we receive because it helps us to keep improving!
