As an initial teacher education (ITE) institution, we spend a lot of our time thinking about mentoring student teachers, especially how to support our school-based colleagues who undertake this vital role. Our colleagues in the regional school improvement consortia think about it too, especially with their responsibility for mentoring newly-qualified teachers (NQTs). One consortium, Central South Consortium, carried out an appreciative enquiry to try and get hold of the very best mentoring practice out there in South Wales, and that's what we're talking about in today's episode. NQTs have always had mentors, but the role of mentoring is really emphasised in the ECF, with schools receiving funding for reduced timetables for mentors of ECTs across their 2-year induction. What's clear though, is that ECTs don't just need mentors, they need great mentors. This podcast explores the requirements of mentors in the ECF, and what the research suggests makes really effective mentors have the greatest possible impact on teacher development. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thirstyscholars/message

Book exclusive- Jade's summary The book has three parts. In part one I have attempted to summarise twenty of the most seminal pieces of education literature. I hope this part of the book will make learning about evidence-informed teaching more accessible. This includes a summary and takeaways for teaching. The final section of the book then looks at how schools can embed evidence-informed teaching and develop an evidence-informed culture. It begins with an account of the research and literature in this area and then details my school's journey over the past six years. I have also included case studies from two more school leaders and hope this will show a range of ways in which schools can reach this goal.Part two brings together the research on what I believe are six of the most important areas of evidence-informed teaching. The aim here was to summarise the (in-depth) research on each of these aspects as succinctly and accurately as possible, allowing readers to gain an in-depth knowledge of the most important elements of each strategy. I have also tried to bridge the gap between evidence and practice by providing practical examples of how these strategies may be implemented in the classroom. A step-by-step guide on how to get simple, powerful cooperative learning up and running in your setting – both as classroom practice and as a wider approach to empower the entire school community. The Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit describes collaborative learning as an approach which ‘involves pupils working together on activities or learning tasks', and in such a way that enables ‘everyone to participate on a collective task that has been clearly assigned'. In the context of this book, cooperative learning relates to a number of such activities – from simple memorising to more complex analysis and debating – which are designed to boost learners' interdependence, participation and interaction. Drawing upon both research-informed theory and real-world examples, Jakob Werdelin and Drew Howard present both an insightful introduction to cooperative learning as a practice and philosophy and a practical guide to classroom application. The authors share their expertise on how to amplify the effect of current pedagogical approaches and schemes of work, simplify performance management as an empowering tool for teachers and leaders, and create an inclusive environment in which every pupil is able to fulfil their learning potential. Jakob and Drew also discuss how cooperative learning relates to a range of other aspects of teaching, including assessment, metacognition and Rosenshine's Principles. Teaching science is no simple task. Science teachers must wrestle with highly abstract and demanding concepts, ideas which have taken humanity's greatest minds thousands of years to formulate and refine. Communicating these great and awesome theories involves careful forethought and planning. We need to deliver crystal clear explanations, guide students as they develop their embryonic knowledge and then release them to develop their thinking independently, all the while curating and tending to their long-term understanding as it develops over time. In Teaching Secondary Science: A Complete Guide, Adam breaks down the complex art of teaching science into its component parts, providing a concrete and comprehensive set of evidence-informed steps to nurturing brilliant science students. Adam hopes that you find this book interesting, but his main aim is for you to find it useful. Useful when it comes to sketching out your curriculum, useful when preparing your explanations, useful for mapping out how you will check student understanding and useful for all other aspects of science teaching. This is a truly complete guide, and science teachers of any experience will find it packed with ideas that are new, challenging, interesting and, most importantly, useful. We've already had education royalty on the podcast (aka Maria Rumsey). Well now we have an icon of the online education world, Andy Taylor. And why is he a star? It's not just because he has more than 28,000 followers on Twitter (@MrTs_NQTs) but because he is arguably the most generous tweeter there is. He freely offers endless advice, support and guidance to everyone who needs it as they take their first steps as teachers. The education world, indeed the world in general, would be a better place if there were more folk like Andy. In this podcast we talk about ... Day 1 of his teaching career when the Ofsted brown envelope was brought into the staffroom by the headteacher. The Ofsted visit came and went, but an inspector with great humanity recognised that Andy was going to make his mark, and a big one at that, in the educational world. See, inspectors can be right in their judgements. How teachers make a difference to the lives of many people, so be proud of what you do and don't take for granted the impact you have. The importance of being positive about being a teacher and trying not to moan as it depresses you and those around you. What to say to a student who asks you on a cold winter's day, "Do you like my muff?" whilst warming her hands in her furry fashion accessory as her mother watched on laughing. The value of developing social capital with parents and the local community; it's well worth the effort. Little moments becoming significant when you do the right thing at the right time over and over again to make sure that everyone (students and colleagues) can achieve as much as they can. Being good enough. Do not pressurise yourself to be the finished article immediately as no-one ever achieves that in teaching, and never doubt your ability to do the job. Knowing the expectations people have of you and the ones you have for them. As an ECT you do not need a folder of evidence - your day to day work is enough to prove what you do. In this episode Toria talks to Lizana about 'Coaching and Mentoring'. Here is a message from Lizana - Developing others is always close to my heart, as it is clear from research that the more confident and developed teachers are in their fields, the greater their impact is on pupils and learners. However, teacher development happens in many different ways, and often we start off by developing others in a co-constructive way, working with teacher educators and mentors. The mentoring role cannot be underestimated, and the Carter Review (2015) not only highlighted its importance, but a need for the role to be given enough time. In many working papers produced by CollectiveEd, the mentor's role is highlighted as key in the teacher trainee's initial teacher education, and this is echoed in the Early Careers Framework as part of the DfE's (2019) retention strategy to support future teachers, and to retain them. However, mentors are volunteers, and they give back to the profession in so many different ways, they support others develop others, and often, when working with mentors, they often are not recognised for the work they do, and how much they impact on the wider education landscape.  NQTs often share that a good mentor made all the difference to their learning journey. However, this role is often not acknowledged for its importance and mentors are often in a position where they have very little time to support others. Mentor development often focus on the logistics, and there is a real need to take that further into the learning of mentors and their understanding of the learning of others. It is also important to understand the needs of mentors, and how we can support them to be the best they can be for those they are supporting.  In addition, mentors, also need to understand how the mentoring relationship evolves, and moves from support to a more independent relationship where questioning becomes more helpful in the development of the mentee, to the point where the mentor can make the transition to coaching, with the consent of the coachee, to help develop better learning conversations. Coaching and mentoring are described by Connor and Pokora (2017) as learning conversations, and it is important to think how we can develop mentor's understanding of the learning journey of their mentee, and to support them well to enable them to facilitate these learning conversations and journeys effectively.Bio:Lizana Oberholzer is a Senior Lecturer in teacher education at the University of Wolverhampton. Maisie Smith has just qualified and starts her teaching career with a Year 3 class in a school in Basildon, Essex today! This podcast is a must listen for any teacher at the start of the autumn term because Maisie discussed the one thing that every teacher (not just NQTs) should do at the start of any school year. And what's that I hear you ask? It is the importance of making clear to her class what great learners do, what their habits are, and how they need to behave all the time if they are to succeed day after day. Maisie has already laid the foundations for this when she worked with her class for 2 days at the end of the summer term, but she realises that there is still much to do to embed the expectations into children's day to day behaviour. During our conversation we discussed ... How fascinating children are because they get excited by different things and as a primary school teacher you can bring out their best qualities. The importance of making children feel excited about being in your class so they look forward to each day. How critical it is to use humour with the children to engage them and keep them healthy. You could even buy a joke book! How observing children gives you so much useful information that you can use to make them better learners. How swapping class rules (that they have had in every other class) for class learning expectations means children know what they are meant to do to be great learners, and it makes them behave well too. Giving children ownership of their learning and behaviour in class. This, according to assessment for learning guru Dylan William, is one of the 5 key aspects of AfL. How independence can be developed in children and how a simple strategy like the 4Bs can support this. If you praise the learning behaviour that you want again and again it makes it much more likely you will see that behaviour every day. The value of regularly extending the list of learning behaviours you expect children to demonstrate, so the list stays fresh, relevant and challenging. How questioning can be structured so children have to think more deeply and how learning to join different thoughts together helps them to form more complex ideas. Why asking children to justify their answers is so good for learning.

The natter From the introduction of the book , tell us a little bit about you and your 15 years teaching across 4 schools? You say this book is about the mismanagement of the system , what do you mean by this and what can we do about this ? You kick off the book with relationship building and Rick astley ....tell us how important relationships, empathy and communication are for leaders Observations can be controversial but also useful , what are your www and Ebi here ? Learning walks , deception walks and urine tests . How can we ensure visits to lessons are beneficial for all ? Book scrutiny and deep dives , what is a secret dossier and how can leaders be more transparent? Behaviour - when in doubt blame the teacher for not engaging the learners . Is this common and how do we support teachers with behaviour so they are empowered and not undermined ? Meetings - what is a Botox meeting ? How do we support NQTs so they end up like the one on that recruitment advert How important are unions and why should we stand by our unions ? How does shift happen ? What can we do to achieve a new normal ? Let’s finish as you do with some myth busting! Share a couple with listeners ? Where can we find out more ? The Teachers' Podcast
Kate Aspin (Senior lecturer at Huddersfield University): Supporting new teachers

The Teachers' Podcast

In this episode, Claire speaks with Kate Aspin, a former deputy headteacher and now a senior lecturer at the University of Huddersfield. Kate begins by explaining her teaching journey, how she progressed three times in three years from class teacher to deputy headteacher and subsequently acting headteacher. During this time, Kate supported several Newly Qualified Teachers – including some who were finding the year a challenge - in Calderdale. This led to an interest in further developing her role in teacher training. Kate talks in detail about the different routes into teaching, the benefits of each route and the suitability for prospective students. She highlights the importance of gaining experience in schools and selecting a route that is best for you. She also mentions the challenges trainee teachers face, getting behaviour management right, the role of a mentor and working towards a LIFE/work balance. She notes the introduction of the new Early Career Framework that is due to be trialled in some local authorities - including Bradford and Greater Manchester in September 2020. This will then be rolled out nationally in the following year. The framework aims to provide continued support for Recently Qualified Teachers to help tackle teacher retention issues. Her conversation with Claire also covers the new Ofsted Framework for Initial Teacher Training and how it now mirrors the framework used within schools including ‘Deep Dives’. Kate was pleased to find that students are no longer graded but explains that this creates a ‘grey area’ around what constitutes as a ‘good’ standard and how this can be rolled out across all age ranges.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Mentors are an invaluable resource. Mentors have a crucial role in a trainee teacher’s success. Trainee teachers need good mentors. Mentors should model good practice and verbalise how they got to a certain point and provide scaffolding for the trainee. Make the implicit explicit. Prepare for the NQT year. Trainees should use the final teaching placement to reflect on what worked well and what they would do in different situations throughout the year. For instance: queries with parents, changes with the curriculum etc. Think about organising the classroom to make it work for you and to make it your own. LIFE/work balance for trainee teachers and Newly Qualified Teachers. It is important to remember that Newly Qualified Teachers and Recently Qualified Teachers are still developing and still need support. Encourage trainees or NQTs to adapt resources for what they need and not reinvent the wheel. Good is good enough. They need space to reflect and think. Have regular meetings with induction tutors as NQTs and continue this support in the RQT year. Behaviour management is key. Children who are misbehaving are not learning. Therefore, new trainees must get on top on behaviour management from the outset. The first target for new trainees must relate to behaviour management. Trainees should become familiar with the strategies used in their placement schools and develop strategies that work for them. Be certain that it is the job for you. Get experience in a school to see ‘behind the scenes’. Understand the theory behind planning, get involved in meetings and understand that teaching is a full-on job. If you know what you are getting yourself into, the rest of it will come. If not, it can be a massive shock.   BEST MOMENTS “You have to be certain it is the job for you. It has to run through you like a stick of rock.” “I’m looking for passion, realism, resilience, understanding and awareness of the subject knowledge that is involved [in teaching].” “I am willing to fail somebody. Children don’t get a say in who teaches them. They are the only people who don’t get a say. I’m not putting somebody out there who isn’t fit to teach my children or anybody else’s kids. It’s not fair on the children or the person.” “[Trainees] see an amazing teacher but they don’t have the skills to unpick where that all comes from. They don’t know what that magic is until they see it.” “We should be continuously developing ourselves as professionals but we need space to do that: space to think [and] space to reflect. I think this is greatest gift you can give your NQTs, is that space to say, ‘What’s not working in here?’” “The joy of the NQT [year] is you get to shut the door and if you haven’t got a TA, then it’s just you and the children. If you do have a hideous lesson that is a disaster then you reflect on it, pick yourself up, dust yourself down and you do it better next time.” “I think you have to be optimistic when you work with children.” “All schools need good teachers.” “I am not a big fan of governors walking into school and doing lesson observations on teachers… people in industries and from all walks of life, they don’t know what they are looking for. We need to rely on the senior leadership team.”   VALUABLE RESOURCES Get into Teaching website: https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/explore-my-options The Teachers’ Podcast: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheTeachersPodcast/ Classroom Secrets Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClassroomSecretsLimited/ Classroom Secrets website:  https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/ LIFE/work balance campaign: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/lifeworkbalance-and-wellbeing-in-education-campaign-2019/   ABOUT THE HOST Claire Riley Claire, alongside her husband Ed, is one of the directors of Classroom Secrets, a company she founded in 2013 and which provides outstanding differentiated resources for teachers, schools, parents and tutors worldwide. This week on the podcast, I am in conversation with Nicole Ponsford . Nicole describes herself as working in 'the corners of ed and tech' . She is a teacher, an EdDoctorate Researcher, CEO and founder of the Gender Equality Collective . She is also a TES columnist and the co-author of TechnoTeaching. We had a natter about: 1) You started teaching in early 2000's as I did. Tell listeners a little about your early career mentoring NQTs and improving literacy across school. 2) You were quickly awarded AST status, we hear lots of negatives about ASTs (I am an ex AST) but the issue of promotion out of the classroom rather than promotion within it never seems to have been solved. How did you find the work of an AST , what was the best thing about being an AST? 3) What was the biggest challenge about leading teaching and learning across a school? 4) Technology in schools can be a thorny issue. What advice would you give listeners about how best to use technology in schools? Could you tell listeners more about techno teachers ? 5) Could you tell listeners about your experience of maternity leave and your move into freelance? 6)Narrowing the disadvantage gap is the biggest issue arguably facing schools today (it certainly is in Blackpool) . How did you go about this in your role at Achievement for all? 7) Gender balance is an important issue in schools, homes and businesses, could you tell listeners about your work on the gender equality charter? 8) Where can we find out more about you? In the shameless plugs section: We discuss rED Blackpool and my upcoming article for RSC EiC magazine entitled 'Promotion is it worth it?' out on Monday. We also have our weekly input from our friends and colleagues at Teacher Development Trust Following on seamlessly from the interview with Nicole, the CEO of TDT David Weston shares some research and solutions on equality, carer development and fairness . --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/naylorsnatter/message
