Y las niñas, que solo tenían cuatro y siete años, quedaron esta vez huérfanas de padre y madre.Las niñas quedaron huérfanas en un país extranjero... Su madrastra, con la que apenas habían convivido unos meses, no tenía medios para hacerse cargo de ellas. Sus abuelos maternos vivían en otro continente... Y sus abuelos paternos trabajaban para el ejército y también dependían de traslados intercontinentales.Por fortuna, para las huérfanas, increíblemente sus padres, cuando las niñas todavía eran bebés, habían tenido la inspiración de dejar escrito en su testamento que, en caso de desgracia mayor, la tutela de las niñas recaía en un hermano de la mamá. Este joven estaba casado con una profesora, no tenían hijos, y ambos estaban dispuestos a adoptar a las niñas en caso de que quedasen huérfanas.Era como si los padres de estas niñas hubiesen tomado todas las medidas posibles para asegurarles a las pequeñas lo que nadie sospechaba, entonces que pudiese ocurrir: «No os dejaremos huérfanas». Gracias a haber tomado las medidas jurídicas necesarias en el testamento, el deseo de los padres, y casi su última voluntad, se cumplió para las pequeñas: sus padres se habían comprometido a no dejarlas huérfanas y, aunque las crueles circunstancias de la vida habían truncado sus vidas, la promesa hecha a las niñas se mantuvo: «No os dejaremos huérfanas».Las niñas viven ahora muy felices con sus tíos, que las han adoptado. Es interesante resaltar que, tras un proceso relativamente largo, ya que cada uno de los padres fallecidos tenía una nacionalidad distinta y la muerte del padre tuvo lugar en un tercer país diferente a los suyos, cuando el juez les concedió la custodia de las niñas a los tíos, y tras ver la ansiedad en los rostros de las pequeñas, les dijo con una tranquilizadora sonrisa:» Yo no os voy a dejar huérfanas».Jesús estaba a punto de terminar su ministerio. Las terribles horas de su pasión se acercaban. Los discípulos no llegaban a entender que el Maestro se despidiese de ellos, porque nunca habían imaginado que su vida terminaría como estaba a punto de terminar.Y el Maestro les hace entonces esta inigualable promesa, que nos sigue haciendo a nosotros hoy: «Yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo» (Mat. 28: 20).

Ellos, siguiendo a la estrella, llegaron hasta Jesús y lo adoraron (Mat. 2: 12).Los sacerdotes y los escribas leían y estudiaban las Escrituras. Así que Dios les habló a través de las Escrituras. Pero ellos no respondieron a su mensaje y prefirieron ignorarlo (Mat. 2: 3-5).Los pastores estaban cumpliendo con sus tareas habituales, haciendo su deber, velando sobre sus rebaños. Los cristianos hemos encontrado a Dios en Jesús.Y ahora el desafío de Jesús para nosotros es que aprendamos a encontrarlo también en los otros (Mat. 25: 31-45). Y este desafío, en estas fechas, podríamos formularlo del siguiente modo: que el mensaje de Navidad de que Dios ha venido a visitarnos encarnado en Jesús se encarne en la vida de cada uno de nosotros. En nosotros también Dios desea visitar a su pueblo.Para mí el cristianismo podría resumirse en la puesta en práctica cotidiana del mensaje de Navidad, cada día del año, con cada una de las personas con las que nos encontramos. Hasta el día en que nos visitará de nuevo, para quedarse con nosotros, en la tierra renovada, definitivamente.

Más allá de los tejados, pequeñas guirnaldas de luces formaban los perfiles de los viejos chalés junto al río, como casitas de juguete de un grandioso belén.Un pequeño coro de ancianos y niños del Ejército de Salvación entonaba con sus suaves y discretas voces la familiar melodía de una canción reina de estas fechas: «Noche de paz, noche de amor. Todo duerme en derredor... ». Y una vaga emoción me embargó, casi nublando mis ojos y dilatando mi corazón. ¡Cuánto me gustaba ese ambiente navideño! ¡Qué placer extraño el de disfrutar de la paz de esa noche, sabiendo que el amor de los míos me rodeaba como un escudo protector, en este oasis suizo, en medio de un mundo en tinieblas!Mientras disfruta arrobado la magia del momento, la caída de un cuerpo por las escaleras al fondo de la calle me despertó de mi ensueño. Un hombre se había desplomado y quedaba tendido sobre la nieve, muy cerca del puente sobre el río Aar. De pronto, todo este escenario me pareció muy frío, triste y sombrío. Mientras apresuraba mi paso para acercarme al hombre caído, otra sombra se me adelantó, y se arrodilló a su lado.Cuando llegué junto a él descubrí que el frío no había terminado su obra en el hombre caído, que respiraba penosamente todavía. Era evidente que un exceso de alcohol lo había fulminado allí, en plena calle. Mientras el coro del Ejército de Salvación seguía cantando villancicos, ajeno a esta tragedia, este hombre se hundía en la inconsciencia, víctima de las trampas de la soledad y del vino, queriendo escapar sin duda a los fantasmas de sus recuerdos.Las luces, los abetos, las estrellas, los cánticos... Todo se había esfumado también para mí. Y solo tenía ojos para ver la espalda del socorrista abnegado, doblegado sobre esta forma humana, intentando reanimar el resto de vida que habitaba todavía el cuerpo del anciano caído.Entonces tomé conciencia de golpe de que ese era el sentido profundo y real de la Navidad: Dios, inclinándose hasta nosotros con amor y ternura, para sanar nuestra insensatez, nuestra miseria, nuestra desesperanza y nuestra soledad, y reanimar en nosotros la esperanza de la verdadera Vida.

Este título insólito corresponde, simplemente, a la duración de la pieza, es decir, 4 minutos y 33 segundos. Lo especial de esta composición es que sus tres movimientos no contienen ninguna nota, aparte de la anotación «Tácet»: silencio.El estreno de 4'33" tuvo lugar el 29 de agosto del año 1952 en Wood stock (Nueva York), y constituyó un sonado escándalo. En efecto: el joven pianista David Tudor entró en escena, saludó al público, se instaló ante el piano de cola, lo abrió, esperó los 4 minutos y 33 segundos y lo volvió a cerrar, marcando así el fin de la actuación. Entretanto, nada. Silencio. Un silencio solo interrumpido por las toses nerviosas de los espectadores... hasta que se dieron cuenta de que no había nada más que esperar y abandonaron la sala protestando, frustrados y enfurecidos.Lo más chocante es que, gracias a esa «creación», John Cage se hizo mundialmente famoso, fue solicitado para interpretarla en numerosas ocasiones y hasta para grabarla en discos y CD ¡con diferentes instrumentos!!¿Locura? ¿Extravagancia? ¿Genialidad? ¿Burla? Ha habido reacciones para todos los gustos. No es mi intención aquí ni juzgar al artista ni a sus fans, ni discutir sobre las numerosas virtudes del silencio. Mis reflexiones van en otra dirección: hay silencios que pueden ser bienhechores, muy valiosos y hasta caros, pero hay otros muy poco recomendables, porque no aportan nada bueno.Jesús instó a sus discípulos a compartir el mensaje que él había proclamado a costa de su propia vida: el evangelio no debe ser callado bajo ningún pretexto. Tiene que ser proclamado a todo mundo para que llegue a toda la humanidad y cumpla su misión, antes de que sea demasiado tarde.El apóstol Pablo siente tan a pecho esa responsabilidad, que exclama: «¡Ay de mí, si no anuncio el evangelio!» (1 Cor. 9: 16). Y exhorta al joven Timoteo en estos términos: «Te suplico encarecidamente [...] que prediques la palabra y que instes a tiempo y fuera de tiempo. Redarguye, reprende, exhorta con toda paciencia y doctrina [...]. Cumple tu ministerio» (2 Tim. 4: 1-5).Cuando la historia parece avanzar a ciegas por derroteros inciertos, no es tiempo de silenciar que Jesús ha prometido volver. Sería un silencio demasiado caro.
