Respondiendo él, les dijo: ¿Veis todo esto? De cierto os digo que no quedará aquí piedra sobre piedra que no sea derribada"» (Mat. 24: 1-2).El templo de Jerusalén (llamado por los historiadores «el Segundo Templo»), recién reconstruido entonces por iniciativa del rey Herodes el Grande sobre una plataforma sostenida por enormes bloques de piedra, era el orgullo de la nación de Israel. No es de extrañar que los discípulos de Jesús se sintiesen impresionados por su esplendor. Las palabras del Maestro debieron de chocarles, porque el templo representaba para sus compatriotas la presencia de Dios entre su pueblo.Sin embargo, menos de cuarenta años más tarde, en el año 70 d.C., las legiones romanas destruyeron Jerusalén e incendiaron el templo. Un bajorrelieve del llamado arco de Tito, levantado en Roma para conmemorar la victoria de ese general sobre Judea, representa a unos soldados llevando como trofeo el candelabro que iluminaba el lugar santo. Si algo había quedado de Jerusalén, fue completamente arrasado en el año 135 por el emperador Adriano.El famoso «Muro de las Lamentaciones» es solo parte de la inmensa plataforma de piedras que sostenía la explanada sobre la que se asentaba el templo.Por si esta eliminación de vestigios no fuera suficiente, el 18 de octubre del año 2016 el Consejo Ejecutivo de la Unesco «votaba» en París «la no existencia de vínculos entre el pueblo de Israel y las ruinas del Templo de Jerusalén». Como si la realidad histórica, como si la evidencia visible, fuera votable y solo dependiera de la opinión de una mayoría.De este Consejo, formado por 58 países, veinticuatro votaron a favor de borrar cualquier relación entre Israel y el antiguo templo. Solo seis (Estados Unidos, Alemania, Gran Bretaña, Lituania, Estonia y Países Bajos), se pronunciaron en defensa de la evidencia histórica de que Israel tuvo allí su templo. Hubo veintiséis abstenciones y dos ausencias.Esto significa que la destrucción profetizada por Jesús de que no quedaría del templo piedra sobre piedra se ha cumplido, tan literalmente que para muchos ya ha comenzado a desaparecer hasta la memoria de aquellas piedras.El templo había servido como símbolo visible de la presencia invisible de Dios entre nosotros (Éxo. 25: 8). En Jesús, Dios vino a habitar con nosotros (Juan 1: 14). Entonces y ahora Cristo es Emmanuel, «Dios con nosotros» (Mat. 1: 23).Tan fiable como su promesa de que nada quedaría de las piedras del templo, es la de que Jesús estará con nosotros «todos los días hasta el fin del mundo» (Mat. 28: 20).

El mismo verbo traducido como “fueron fieles” al Señor (ver Deut. 4:4), se utiliza también para describir el pacto matrimonial que se pretendía que existiera entre los cónyuges (Gén. 2:24) o la lealtad de Rut a Noemí (Rut 1:14). Es importante señalar que, según la evaluación de Josué, tal fidelidad había caracterizado a Israel como nación “hasta el día de hoy”. Lamentablemente, la misma afirmación no sería aplicable a períodos posteriores de la historia de Israel, como tristemente demuestra el libro de Jueces (Jue. 2:2, 7, 11; 3:7, 12; 4:1, etc.). Josué exhorta a Israel a amar al Señor, su Dios (Jos. 23:11; comparar con Deut. 6:5). El amor no puede forzarse; si así fuera, dejaría de ser lo que esencialmente es. Ahora bien, ¿en qué sentido es posible requerir el amor de alguien? Para que Israel pudiera disfrutar continuamente de las bendiciones del pacto, debía permanecer fiel a Dios. El texto hebreo de Josué 23:11 es extremadamente enfático: “Tengan sumo cuidado, por la vida de ustedes, de amar al Señor su Dios” (NBLA). La palabra ‘‘ahabah, “amor”, puede referirse a una amplia gama de afectos humanos, como el apego amistoso, la intimidad sexual, la ternura maternal, el amor romántico y la lealtad a Dios. Si entendemos el amor a Dios como un compromiso consciente y como devoción a él, es posible exigirlo sin violar su verdadera esencia (comparar con Juan 13:34). Dios siempre quiso que la obediencia a sus mandamientos surgiera natural y espontáneamente de una relación personal con él (Éxo. 19:4 [“los he traído a mí”]; Deut. 6:5, comparar con Mat. 22:37), basada en lo que él hizo por su pueblo como demostración de su gran misericordia y amor. El mandamiento de amar a Dios también expresa la naturaleza mutua, pero no simétrica, del amor divino. Dios desea entrar en una relación íntima y personal con cada persona que corresponda a su amor. En consecuencia, suamor para con todos constituye el marco para la manifestación de nuestro amor voluntario y mutuo. Mat Duerden has spent his career studying how experiences work, why they matter, and what turns an ordinary moment into something meaningful or even transformative. La pregunta del versículo 45, «¿Quién es el siervo fiel y prudente?», no tiene respuesta en el texto, ni necesita tenerla, porque cada lector debe buscarla en su corazón.El secreto de la vida victoriosa está en aprender a vivir como el mayordomo suizo: tenerlo todo preparado como si Cristo fuera a volver hoy. Lejos de la idea catastrofista de pensar que en cualquier momento todo se acaba, se trata de disfrutar de cada momento al máximo.Piénsalo bien: vivir cada día a la luz de la eternidad, como si fuera el último de nuestra vida, es la mejor manera de sacarle el mayor partido a la existencia. Mahatma Gandhi lo había dicho casi igual, aunque desde una perspectiva secular: «Vive como si fueses a morir mañana. Aprende como si fueras a vivir siempre».Esta es mi oración hoy.

Por mucho que fuera la primera canción a Capella en llegar al número uno en la lista de los Billboard Hot 100 en los Estados Unidos, y por mucho que mantuviera esa posición varias semanas, ¿cómo no vamos a preocuparnos por el día de mañana en un mundo como el nuestro? ¿Cómo no angustiarnos por el día de mañana si los análisis médicos son preocupantes, si el trabajo es inseguro o si las finanzas no nos llegan para terminar el mes?Veamos. Una cosa es preocuparnos y creo que como cristianos responsables debemos ocuparnos seriamente de nuestro futuro y del de nuestra familia, y otra cosa es angustiarnos. Jesús da por sentado que antes de lanzarnos a un proyecto debemos calcular el costo y no emprender aquello que no podemos asumir: «¿Quién de vosotros, queriendo edificar una torre, no se sienta primero y calcula los gastos, a ver si tiene lo que necesita para acabarla? No sea que, después que haya puesto el cimiento, no pueda acabarla y todos los que lo vean comiencen a hacer burla de él, diciendo: "Este hombre comenzó a edificar y no pudo acabar"» (Luc. 14: 28-30).Angustiarnos es otra cosa. Angustiarnos es dejar que el miedo nos domine. Es perder la serenidad y la confianza en un Dios que promete estar siempre a nuestro lado. La angustia es como esa bola de nieve que, cuando vivíamos cerca de los Alpes, algunos niños lanzaban a la deriva, y que, si no se detenía a tiempo, cada vez se hacía más grande y era capaz de enterrarnos en una avalancha. Para detenerla al principio bastaba pararla con el pie, pero si se la dejaba crecer y tomar velocidad podía ser incalculablemente destructiva.Pablo nos dice casi lo mismo en otras palabras: «Por nada estéis angustiados, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús» (Fil. 4: 6-7).Señor, en estos tiempos de angustia, dame tu paz. Muéstrame cómo puedo superar los desafíos que tengo que enfrentar hoy y ayúdame a irradiar esa serenidad en mi entorno inmediato.

Y eso incluye cualquier expresión o manifestación contraria a lo que se sabe, se piensa o se siente. La gravedad de la mentira está en su intención de engañar.Como Dios es verdad y amor supremos, Jesús puede afirmar categóricamente, en este pasaje, que la naturaleza de Satanás se manifiesta precisamente en su empeño de separarnos de Dios para engañarnos y hacernos todo el daño posible. La mentira es lo que lo define desde sus primeras palabras a nuestros primeros padres: «No moriréis» (Gén. 3: 4).Desde entonces hasta ahora el diablo no ha dejado de mentir y de intentar engañarnos. «El diablo [...] cuando habla mentira, de suyo habla, pues es mentiroso y padre de mentira» (Juan 8: 44). Jesús nos advierte de que, a medida que se acerca el fin, el diablo arreciará con sus mentiras, cada vez más sutiles y perversas, con la intención de apartarnos de Dios, a través de sus agentes humanos, «de tal manera que engañarán, si es posible, aun a los escogidos» (Mat. 24: 24).Eso significa que estos tiempos del fin no son buenos para la verdad. El enemigo de la verdad está haciendo todo lo posible para confundir a la humanidad, a fuerza de mentiras. Para ello ha conseguido incluso que el valor financiero de la mentira haya ido subiendo hasta superar todas las cotas conocidas hasta ahora.Y es que la mentira es muy rentable. A base de mentiras se imponen presidentes, aunque aparentemente hayan sido votados de manera democrática. A base de mentiras, los gobiernos, los bancos y las grandes empresas se hacen con nuestro dinero, nos persuaden, convencen, controlan y estafan, destruyendo cualquier resistencia u oposición, para vendernos lo que sea. A base de mentiras, los agentes del enemigo de Dios intentan «engañar a los habitantes de la tierra» (Apoc. 13: 14), y consiguen apartar a millones de seres humanos del camino de la salvación.Para esos poderosos de esta tierra la mentira es hoy una inversión sin riesgos reales y con altísimos beneficios. Alguien ha dicho que su lema de acción parece ser: «A los votantes hay que engañarlos, a los consumidores hay que mentirles para tenerlos endeudados y a los jóvenes y demás espectadores hay que mantenerlos entretenidos con ficciones... La cuestión es que nadie piense. Y, sobre todo, que nadie averigüe la verdad».Señor, líbrame hoy de la fascinación de la mentira. Por encima de la confusión que me rodea, quiero escuchar la voz de Dios.
