This week’s mini episode is all about facing your fears and not being held back in life by the fear of failure. It’s important to know that we don’t always recognise how we’re feeling as ‘fear of failure’ when we hesitate or say no, but often that’s what lies behind any hesitation. In this episode we hear again from Kat Dunn. Kat was running Grameen Australia when we spoke a year or so back and these days Kat is working for herself and very much still focused on social ventures. Kat has thought a lot about failure and has held numerous failure-themed events in the past, and as a result, she has all kinds of wisdom to share as you will hear in this future-proofing, mini episode. Extra InfoHere are the 4 different lenses we shared at the end of this episode that can help when you’re worrying about failing. . . 1. Growth Mindset - overcoming a fixed mindset and embracing the prospect of growing and learning;2. The practise of Gratitude - to be more positive; 3. Purpose - instead of focusing on what you're afraid of, think about what are you moving towards? 4. Play - we underestimate the power of play in the adult world to really unlock creativity and get us into a state of inspiration and action, the perfect antidote to failure-inspired hesitation and inertia. This week on Behind the Lines we welcome back two former guests, Dr. Jill Woods from the Nepal Leprosy Trust and Barrister Ian Neil SC with Grameen Australia to discuss Microcredit Financing and the difference that the cost of a meal out in Australia can make for people in impoverished communities seeking to transform their lives and communities. The leprosy trust already has an established microfinance initiative that is making enormous difference to the lives of women and their families impacted by leprosy in poverty stricken communities in Nepal. Many entrepreneurial enterprises have sprung from the initiative and are thriving. Jill will be sharing some stories of these successes, and personal insights garnered from her active involvement and time spent volunteering in Nepal treating Leprosy patients. Joining us later today via phone, we are fortunate to have leading Australian Barrister, employment and Industrial law expert, and chair of Grameen Australia, Ian Neil SC back with us. We previously hosted Ian last December to discuss the ins and outs of the Jobkeeper scheme and the employment contract. This morning Ian will be chatting to us about Grameen Australia’s Microfinance Initiative, working with Nobel Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to build ‘a world of 3 zeros’: zero poverty, zero unemployment, zero emissions.
Welcome to Episode 39 of Good Will Hunters! This week I chat to Kat Dunn, CEO of Grameen Australia, about her work to support social businesses. THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY THE INTREPID GROUP, THE TOUR COMPANY PROVIDING SUSTAINABLE, EXPERIENCE-RICH TRAVEL. You might recognise Grameen Australia from the Grameen Bank, the well know micro loan bank started by Muhammad Yunus. Grameen Australia isn't an extension of the Grameen Bank, but rather is an independent organisation supporting social businesses in Australia to scale. What is a social business? I'd describe it as a business with a social mission, which reinvests profits back into the business rather than giving profits to shareholders. In this episode, Kat describes why social businesses can do what governments and charities often can not. It's an important discussion and a fantastic insight into the work of Kat and her peers. Enjoy, Rachel [Royalty free music by Ben Sound]
Kat Dunn is at the vanguard of microfinance. She’s CEO of Grameen Australia, and she has some big lofty goals for shifting our concept of banking, to give those who don’t have the backing of hard assets, an alternative route to access loans and capital. Kat opened up about the big move she made, leaving a role with a major fund manager, she stepped off the corporate ladder and she took a leap of faith, following her heart and her need for purpose, rather than clinging to the security of a big salary. I‘d love to hear what you think, so please leave me a review on iTunes. In this episode, we are in conversation with Katrina Dunn, CEO of Grameen Australia, and Giles Gunesekera, CEO of Global Impact Initiative. We are carrying on with our central thesis of the intersection of the sense of purpose letter and this new thinking of being an authentic leader in connecting your head and heart and what it looks like in their businesses. In this episode: Katrina’s thoughts on the existential crisis of corporates all over the world and the tension between what the role of the company is and the tension between shareholder and customer primacy. Giles’ discussion on the services and vision of Global Impact Initiative and the “bottom-up push”. The Women and Girls Fund - what it is and how it works. Today’s Get on Purpose Action (GOPA): Think about how you can solve a social problem using some of your business skills and being able to take that to market in a sustainable way. Have a look at superannuation accounts and look at where that money is invested and see if it is in line with their values and purpose and if not, talk to your superannuation fund about your investing options. How are you? That's the question Kat would like to see more often asked. But not the friendly way how it's often done where people are not really interested in how the other person us. But a sincere interest. Especially towards people who are working in fields where they already help other people in need. Kat's career has been very interesting. From a successful corporate career to finding a purpose in her life. Enjoy this honest and deep conversation.
