Hello Friends! This week we're back and talking about Hungerstone by Kat Dunn! We're talking vampires in the 19th century, horrible husbands and workers rights in factories? Join us as while we talk about this new retelling of the classic sapphic vampire tale! Book description below Theme by Man with Roses Lenore is the wife of steel magnate Henry, but ten years into their marriage, the relationship has soured and no child has arrived to fill the distance growing between them. Henry's ambitions take them out of London and to the imposing Nethershaw manor in the countryside, where Henry aims to host a hunt with society's finest. Lenore keeps a terrible secret from the last time her husband hunted, and though they never speak of it, it haunts their marriage to this day. The preparations for the event take a turn when a carriage accident near their remote home brings the mysterious Carmilla into Lenore's life. Carmilla who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night; Carmilla who stirs up a hunger deep within Lenore. Soon girls from local villages begin to fall sick before being consumed by a bloody hunger. Torn between regaining her husband's affection and Carmilla's ever-growing presence, Lenore begins to unravel her past and in doing so, uncovers a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .
Wildly, it's becoming a bit of tradition to see out the end of the season with a podcast episode dedicated to speaking to an author and Season 10 saw us speak to the wonderfully lovely and very smart Kat Dunn, the author of ‘Hungerstone', ‘Bitterthorn' and the ‘Battalion of the Dead' trilogy. It was ‘Hungerstone' that captured us and we had so many things to discuss about the Gothic, dark academia, women and the wonderful ‘Hungerstone' which you can learn about right here:FOR WHAT DO YOU HUNGER . . . ?Lenore is the wife of steel magnate Henry, but ten years into their marriage the relationship has soured, and no child has arrived to fill the distance growing between them. Henry's ambitions take them from London to the Peak District, to the remote, imposing Nethershaw estate, where he plans to host a hunting party. Lenore must work to restore the crumbling house and ready it for Henry's guests - their future depends on it.But as the couple travel through the bleak countryside, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into Lenore's life. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night, Carmilla who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger . . .As the day of the hunt draws closer, Lenore begins to unravel, questioning the role she has been playing all these years. Torn between regaining her husband's affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .Set against the violent wilderness of the Peaks and the uncontrolled appetite of the Industrial Revolution, HUNGERSTONE is a compulsive sapphic reworking of CARMILLA, the book that inspired DRACULA: a captivating story of appetite and desire. With influences of the Gothic and inspiration from a classic vampire tale, ‘Hungerstone' was something we absolutely had to read for the podcast (you can listen to the episode here) and we were so excited to get to speak to Kat herself.
Dani serves up three piping hot titles from the Horror genre: Private Rites by Julia Armfield, Hungerstone by Kat Dunn, and Indian Burial Ground by Nick Medina.
Both Sarah and I have big buzzwords outside of dark academia, and several of them are vampires and ‘Carmilla' retelling and we added ‘Hungerstone' to our line up so fast when we learned that this novel is inspired by ‘Carmilla' b Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, a sapphic vampire novella that predated ‘Dracula'.Even with my slight aversion to historical fiction, reading this and talking about it on Season 10 was a no-brainer.FOR WHAT DO YOU HUNGER . . Torn between regaining her husband's affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .But does the Gothic lead in dark academia with ‘Hungerstone'?In this episode we discuss:- The motifs of blood- The crumbling estate of Nethshaw and the way it interacts with Lenore's crumbling marriage and mental state- Carmilla's presence in the novel, and her lack of presence on page
Retellings seem to be having a moment these days. Do you prefer a retelling that more or less follows the original trajectory, or do you prefer one that reinvents and takes the original in a new direction? In today's episode, we each read a retelling of a literary classic. Books mentioned on this episode: Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler, Pym by Mat Johnson, Hungerstone by Kat Dunn, and The King of Infinite Space by Lyndsay Faye.
We are back for Season 6 in time for the dark moody vibes of fall with a series of episodes on Gothic Romances. We begin with an episode about Kat Dunn’s sapphic witchy romance set in the most gothic of castles: Bitterthorn. Our agents get lost on side topics a few times as they wander through the woods to discuss other books and video games. In the end, they make it through just in the nick of time. Our Agents start with a non-spoiler pitch to convince you to read Bitterthorn, and then they go full spoilers with fair warning. Annette Wierstra with James Thomson.

We are joined this week by author Kat Dunn who supplies us with tales of many, many cats after which she is not named. We talk naming conventions, the joy of a feline being both graceful and goofy and whether meows can be accented.

In 1989 Kiranjit Ahuwalia set fire to her sleeping husband who was found running around their front garden. It emerged that she had suffered years of abuse at his hands, but is it possible to defend yourself against a sleeping attacker? This case forced the courts to examine the way that years of abuse may cloud your judgement, and specifically; what constitutes “provocation”? On this episode of Bad People Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen discuss whether provocation can ever be a “slow burn” and what this case tells us about how the courts, and society, view intimate partner abuse.CREDITSPresenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Louisa Field, Kat Dunn and Laura Northedge Editor: Anna Lacey Music: Matt Chandler The Open University: Dr Sarah Laurence and Dr Ailsa Strathie Commissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland#BadPeople_BBCBad People is produced in partnership with The Open University and is a BBC Audio Science Production for BBC Sounds.Commissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland#BadPeople_BBC

This week’s mini episode is all about facing your fears and not being held back in life by the fear of failure. It’s important to know that we don’t always recognise how we’re feeling as ‘fear of failure’ when we hesitate or say no, but often that’s what lies behind any hesitation. In this episode we hear again from Kat Dunn. Kat was running Grameen Australia when we spoke a year or so back and these days Kat is working for herself and very much still focused on social ventures. Kat has thought a lot about failure and has held numerous failure-themed events in the past, and as a result, she has all kinds of wisdom to share as you will hear in this future-proofing, mini episode. Extra InfoHere are the 4 different lenses we shared at the end of this episode that can help when you’re worrying about failing. . . 1. Growth Mindset - overcoming a fixed mindset and embracing the prospect of growing and learning;2. The practise of Gratitude - to be more positive; 3. Purpose - instead of focusing on what you're afraid of, think about what are you moving towards? 4. Play - we underestimate the power of play in the adult world to really unlock creativity and get us into a state of inspiration and action, the perfect antidote to failure-inspired hesitation and inertia. Welcome to Episode 39 of Good Will Hunters! This week I chat to Kat Dunn, CEO of Grameen Australia, about her work to support social businesses. THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY THE INTREPID GROUP, THE TOUR COMPANY PROVIDING SUSTAINABLE, EXPERIENCE-RICH TRAVEL. You might recognise Grameen Australia from the Grameen Bank, the well know micro loan bank started by Muhammad Yunus. Grameen Australia isn't an extension of the Grameen Bank, but rather is an independent organisation supporting social businesses in Australia to scale. What is a social business? I'd describe it as a business with a social mission, which reinvests profits back into the business rather than giving profits to shareholders. In this episode, Kat describes why social businesses can do what governments and charities often can not. It's an important discussion and a fantastic insight into the work of Kat and her peers. Enjoy, Rachel [Royalty free music by Ben Sound]
If we had to summarise what our guest this week is all about, we’d say she’s about reinvention and being true to herself. And for 35 year old Kat Dunn, that meant abandoning a successful corporate career. Born in the Philippines, Kat had been climbing the corporate ladder at an impressive rate in Australia, first of all as a lawyer and then in a variety of roles in financial services. But she was deeply unhappy. One day she said “Enough” and took radical action. In this episode we explore exactly how and why she did this and how she feels about her new career now, several years down the track. Today Kat is CEO of Grameen in Australia, part of the global not for profit organisation founded by the Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus. In this frank and heartfelt episode you’ll hear: What it’s like growing up Asian in an almost all white country town in Western Australia How Kat started out as a consummate planner and then realised that just wasn’t working How she confronted failure head-on and even made a business out of it And, how she’s never felt more secure despite earning 50% less than she used to. Kat Dunn is at the vanguard of microfinance. She’s CEO of Grameen Australia, and she has some big lofty goals for shifting our concept of banking, to give those who don’t have the backing of hard assets, an alternative route to access loans and capital. Kat opened up about the big move she made, leaving a role with a major fund manager, she stepped off the corporate ladder and she took a leap of faith, following her heart and her need for purpose, rather than clinging to the security of a big salary. I‘d love to hear what you think, so please leave me a review on iTunes. How are you? That's the question Kat would like to see more often asked. But not the friendly way how it's often done where people are not really interested in how the other person us. But a sincere interest. Especially towards people who are working in fields where they already help other people in need. Kat's career has been very interesting. From a successful corporate career to finding a purpose in her life. Enjoy this honest and deep conversation. More About Kat Dunn Kat Dunn is the CEO and Group Deputy CEO of Grameen Australia, an organisation that gives people a "hand up" out of poverty so that they can lead meaningful, dignified lives. She started her career as a lawyer at Clayton Utz and left her senior leadership role at an ASX fund manager Perpetual Limited after 9 years in corporate to pursue purpose over profit.
