The Future of Debt: Can Fintech Fill the Gap?

How can small businesses gain access to the working capital they need? Zach Bijesse of Payhippo and Tunde Kehinde of Lidya are trying to figure it out. Hear how new technologies are changing the future of lending for small businesses in Nigeria, Africa, and the world. With over 200 million people and 40 million small businesses, Nigeria is the perfect spot to launch a fintech company that's trying to push the boundaries of how businesses get capital. Both Zach Bijesse and Tunde Kehinde saw a huge market opportunity in Nigeria with its sheer size and strong startup culture. Their companies, Payhippo and Lidya, respectively, are using artificial intelligence and machine learning to make lending faster and more accessible for entrepreneurs, and in turn, more successful for this new breed of lender.Zach makes the problem clear: “Businesses can't get money in Nigeria when they need it. It's that simple.” Tunde believes that artificial — and human — intelligence are key to filling the small business lending gap. “Humans are involved in setting the rules. I think on average per loan, we have close to a thousand data points we look at. And so humans are looking to say, based on our assessment criteria, is it working or not working? And if it's not working, how do we tweak the rules to make sure the recollection is done properly?” Likewise Zach's Payhippo endorses ongoing experimentation and the importance of training their algorithms to get better over time. “People forget that you can only train your machine learning algorithm based on your data set. So, you know, we have a few defaults in our loan portfolio. That's not a bad thing. You just have to give loans and figure out what works.”Unlike most entrepreneurs, these two aren't intimidated by competition, even from banks themselves. Instead, they're always looking for opportunities to collaborate and partner. As Zach explains, “there's a $46 billion opportunity for small business lending in Nigeria. Why would Payhippo need to take one hundred percent of the market? Let's keep growing and do what we do. And then once we get a little bit of bandwidth, it'd be great to empower the other guys and collaborate with them. That's really exciting to us because then the whole financial infrastructure develops and it's better for everyone.”Listen to Zach and Tunde's story to learn how technology and new ways of thinking can impact how you approach and solve your specific business and market challenges.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Happy Day, Friend! On this week's podcast episode, I'm talking about inclusive affirmations for kids and the mindfulness resource deck you must add to your holiday gift list. My guest this week is author and creator, Fionna Wright. Fionna and Madison wrote 100 Days Inside as a special mother-daughter project during their time at home (during the pandemic), and the story is based on their experience, and all the big emotions that came with it. They wanted to create a book where their diverse aesthetic and co-parenting family dynamic was represented in a positive light. Fionna and Madison have extended that into their newly released project, Mindful Littles: Daily Affirmations for Kids. The deck of cards aims to be diverse and inclusive so that every little one feels represented while they practice mindfulness. This mother-daughter duo is creating the change they want to see. Fionna and I talk about: ~ her family's journey into mindfulness; ~ her personal experience, and the BIG emotions that came with it, during the pandemic; ~ inclusion and representation in mindfulness resources; ~ the Mindful Littles affirmation project; ~ so much more! It was such a warm and insightful conversation. I hope you gain a ton of value from it. Definitely stock up on her card deck, Mindful Littles: Daily Affirmations for Kids, for all the kids, coaches, and educators in your life for the holidays. Connect with Fionna Wright

Building Back From Scratch: How to Successfully Start Over & Shift Focus (With Angelo Datseris) – Episode 93

Broker-to-Broker

Angelo Datseries, Broker/Owner of Leverage Lending Group, is out to make himself a household name in his local market of Charlotte, North Carolina. Starting his brokerage in 2007, he had to dramatically scale back his brokerage to survive the 2008 Stock Market Crash. Since that scale down, he has been organically growing back his brokerage through community engagement, social media, and video marketing. Staying true to his goals and himself, he has built a successful brokerage, but for Angelo, the sky's the limit.  Before joining the Broker channel in the mid-2000s, Angelo was working as a service technician until he seriously hurt his back. After spending a few years in a service advisor role at his brother's brokerage, he decided to venture out on his own and open Leverage Lending Group.  Starting off, Angelo had a team of nine loan officers, but not long after, the recession upended the industry. Most of his loan officers left to join banks and Angelo had to completely rework his business. After a conversation with his father, he decided to massively scale back unnecessary expenditures, starting with his large office space. Shifting his focus to FHA loans, Angelo survived the market crash and was able to start growing his brokerage back up from scratch.   The key to Angelo's success is embracing organic growth. Instead of throwing money at expensive leads, he has made it a goal to become a well-known name in his local market. He holds community meet and greets and happy hours with his referral partners, and emails personalized videos, and shares organic social media posts with his ever-growing following as well. He embraces the philosophy of “focus(ing) on helping people and the business will follow.”  Angelo's parting advice: Build your database on day one. Every person you talk to, every person you make contact with, needs to be added to your database. Once you have that database in place, you need to set up an automation drip to keep yourself in front of them.  Notes: Getting into the Mortgage Industry (2:28) Surviving the Market Crash (5:28) Diversifying Your Loan Products (10:22) Keeping a Growth Mindset in a Shrinking Market (15:06) Angelo's Tech Stack/Utilizing Video (21:34) This episode is sponsored by Guaranty Home Mortgage

A fixed mindset can keep you stuck feeling depressed or anxious. In this video you're going to learn how to tell if you have a growth or a fixed mindset, how to develop a growth mindset in regards to mental health, and why having a growth mindset can completely change how you feel about your mental health. Carol Dweck, the author of Mindset (which this video is based off of) said “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work - brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” The opposite of a growth mindset is a fixed mindset - a belief that you were either born talented or defective. That your skills are due more to luck or chance than effort. Looking for affordable online counseling? My sponsor, BetterHelp, connects you to a licensed professional for $65/week. Gratitude is a way of life not a list. It's easy to be thankful for the good things in life, anyone can say that they are grateful for their health, home, and family. If you want to leverage gratitude in your life, you will need to dig deeper. You must be grateful for even the the difficult ad challenging times in life. Aging Options: Skylar Skikos on the Appeal of Intergenerational and Regenerative Communities

One of the things Debbie is starting to think about is where and how she and her husband Sam might want to live as they get older - a lot older than their current 70. Like many Boomers, they are repelled by the idea of a retirement community. This week on the podcast she turns to Skylar Skikos to learn about new options. Skylar, 40, is a philosopher at heart and a financier by trade. He's a real estate developer and investor who specializes in hospitality and senior care and he's Chief Development Officer of Modern Elder Academy in Baja, MX. You've heard Debbie talk before about MEA, the world's first midlife wisdom school. Skylar is fascinated with how to create places that help people flourish, particularly as they age. He thinks there's something missing from age-segregated communities and Debbie couldn't agree more. She wants to run screaming when she sees glossy ads for age 55+ retirement communities like The Villages in Florida because... who wants to live only with old people where the focus is solely on recreation and having fun? This episode is her first attempt to start unpacking the topic of where and how older people can live where they can be part of a mixed-age community, still contributing and living productively, and avoid the loneliness and isolation that many of us associate with retirement communities. Debbie and Skylar talk about several alternatives. One is intergenerational housing that mixes age groups. A number of intergenerational developments are underway right now in different parts of the U.S. They also talk about something called Regenerative Communities, a concept being pioneered by MEA. Skylar joined MEA to help them develop a collection of Regenerative Communities, each of which will include mixed-age residents, a midlife wisdom school where you explore how to grow and thrive in the latter stages of life, and a surrounding regenerative farm. The first Regenerative Community being developed in the U.S. is outside Sante Fe, NM. Debbie and Sam are so intrigued with this concept and are hoping that MEA will turn its sights towards the East Coast, which is closer to home and family for them. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE OR USEFUL: Skylar Skikos on LinkedInNavigating the Youth-Midlife Divide: Musings Approaching a 40th Birthday by Skylar Skikos (Wisdom Well, Nov. 2, 2021)Modern Elder AcademyMEA | Regenerative CommunitiesDon't Mind the Gap in Intergenerational Housing by Karrie Jacobs (New York Times, Sept. 2, 2021)New Model of Active  Adult Senior Living Is Coming to the Austin Area  (Cantina)Cantina CommunityRight Place, Right Time: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Home for the Second Half of Life by Ryan Frederick (‎Johns Hopkins University Press 2021)The Villages (Your Retirement Adventure Starts Here)Public philosopher Tom MorrisSerenbe (a wellness community near Atlanta) NOTE FROM DEBBIEIf you've been enjoying the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts. Meet Ankit Agarwal, Founder of Phool, a flower recycling business based in Kanpur, India. By collecting waste flowers from temples and converting them into eco-friendly products, the company is making an impact on both the women they employ who live near the sacred yet polluted Ganges River and the river itself. Ankit's entrepreneurial journey began with a question from a friend who was visiting the Ganges: “If this river is so sacred, why is it so polluted? And why don't you do something about it?” Ankit did just that.“Every year, we, Indians, put in about eight million tons of waste flowers in the waters. All the pesticides that are used to grow these flowers mixes with the river water, making it highly toxic. That is the leading cause of diarrhea, hepatitis and severe cholera across India and Bangladesh, where the water flows. Finally, I decided to form a company where we can collect waste flowers and do some products.”Ankit believes real change will not happen in this generation...but he is hopeful. ”It will happen in the next generation, when the kids of the women that we're able to employ start going to school: their next generation will be liberated from scavenging.” Listen to Ankit's mini profile to learn how a great business idea can change lives for generations.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Are your brain's hard-wired “survival shortcuts” hampering your success? It's no secret that medical sales reps and sales team leaders have to endure rejection, redirection, misalignment, and countless external roadblocks—the chief culprit being other people's behavior. But knowing what they can control saves them time, energy, and sanity. In this week's special episode, we're featuring TrackableMed CEO Zed Williamson's recent guest appearance on the podcast “Your Best Day Yet,” hosted by Eric Guy of the Center for Victory. Eric and Zed discuss how little-known—yet deeply ingrained—psychological triggers can sabotage our opportunities and why it's imperative to recognize our own biases. Join us to explore actionable ways you can start building habits that bring out the best in your brain. In this episode, you'll learn: Why communication means taking ownership not of what you say, but what others hear you saying Why the human brain is built for shortcuts, and how those shortcuts can sometimes hurt us Why you don't have to stifle or repress your emotions to control them The evolutionary origins of negativity bias and confirmation bias How neurological “shortcuts” help us—and hurt us—in our modern daily lives The power of applying the word “Why” to yourself—and not others Plus, we explore why most people's relationship with the word “If” is dangerous.

In this episode I have a great conversation with Rick Bennett. When I started my conversation with Rick I was under the assumption that his excellent devotional Send Me would be the focus of our conversation. You know what they say about assuming, and the old maxim proved true once again. But in this case I am fortunate that it did, and the story of how Rick came to write this devotional is a good one. Rick felt a call to serve his community and joined his local police dept. as a reserve deputy, Rick later took a leap of faith and walked away from an established well paying career to follow a calling to a purpose bigger than himself by moving to another state to become a full time officer. In his short career as an officer he once again saw and opportunity to serve his new community of first responders and military personal by writing Send Me. Rick is a great example that it is never to late to change things up, make a move and to commit to serving others. This will require a step of faith and sacrifice, but the impact that YOU can make will be felt by many. I hope this podcast serves to challenge you today, where you are. Well, I screwed up and lost the audio for my last two interviews. Two! I know, I know, but my mistake is your gain. I dug deep into the archives of my previous podcast, Ever Vigilant to find one of my favorite episodes. One of the benefits to doing a podcast for so long is the treasure trove of content hidden in the deepest recesses of my hard drive. This conversation was based on an article by Paul Curtman. The article blew my mind the first time I read it and Paul was kind enough to join me on EV to talk about it. I believe that this podcast will surprise you as you realize that there is nothing new under the sun. Paul Curtman is a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, where he served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terror as an infantry squad leader. He is also an author and frequent speaker at political events having spoken all across the nation from Washington DC to Los Angeles.
