John 8:31-58 focuses on Jesus's claim to be the truth that sets people free, contrasted with the Jews' claims of freedom based on their lineage and religious practices. Jesus argues that true disciples abide in His word and are freed from the slavery of sin, while those who reject Him are enslaved to sin and ultimately to death. The passage culminates in Jesus declaring His eternal existence, stating "Before Abraham was, I AM," further emphasizing His divine nature and authority. "Islam's influence in America is growing exponentially, as Muslims are expected to be a majority by 2050. Since Muslims are starting families and their fertility rates are much higher than that of Americans this is a truth we will have to face. One of the things that is interesting about Muslims is that, Jesus is appearing to many, and they are documenting these encounters and coming to Christ in numbers. In this message, Guest Speaker Olin Giles speaks on how important it is for the church to rise up and engage these individuals as Christ cares very much about them too. Olin makes the point that the answer to radical Islam is a radical church and stresses that if we do our part, God will go His part. This is a message to heed, especially if you engage people and want to grow your understanding of other groups in your quest to evangelize." Christina Hello, everyone, I'm Christina Darnell, the managing editor of MinistryWatch. Welcome to the MinistryWatch podcast. In today's extra episode, I talk with Warren Smith about some news items that are slightly (even significantly) outside of our normal charity and philanthropy “beat.” So, Warren, what's up first? Warren This week, I've been thinking a bit about Lonnie Frisbee, one of the more interesting and tragic figures of American Evangelicalism was Lonnie Frisbee. Christina He was a key figure in the so-called “Jesus Revolution” of the 1970s, and he helped found two church movements still around today: Calvary Chapel and Vineyard Churches. Warren That's right. He influenced John Wimber, Greg Laurie, and many others. He died this week (March 12) in 1993 of AIDS. But before he died, he had an outsized impact on the Jesus Revolution, both for good and for ill. I won't go into his biography here, but if you check out my “Signs and Wonders” column this week, I have a link to a longer story I did about him a few years ago. It will be in the show notes for today's program. To read more about Frisbee and the mark he left on American Evangelicalism, click here. Christina You've also been thinking about Kazakhstan this week. Warren Yes, it might sound strange, but I am paying attention to Kazakhstan this week. Christina That seems kind of random. Is there a reason? Warren They vote on Friday on a new constitution, the third constitution since 1993. Kazakhstan is one of the largest countries in the world by land mass. And within Kazakhstan is the largest lake in the world, the Caspian Sea, which is not a sea at all, but a massive lake the size of the state of Montana. Christina But for all its size, it has only about 20 million people. Warren A long-time Soviet satellite, it is an independent nation with a sizable Christian population – about 20 percent. However, it is a country that has a history of human rights, free speech, and civil liberties violations. Critics say the new constitution will further consolidate power with the country's chief executive. Christian ministries operating in Kazakhstan include the Kazakhstan Baptist Union, Youth for Christ, Salvation Army, Operation Mobilization, and International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. Christina Another event happening this week is a bit outside of MinistryWatch's normal coverage, but is a huge cultural event. That's the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Warren South by Southwest, commonly called “South by,” is one of the largest tech, movie, music, and culture events in the country. It regularly draws 120,000 to Austin, Texas. I covered SXSW for WORLD and was always able to find some explicitly Christian events going on. Last year, there was a significant faith component to the proceedings. Silicon Valley Christian hosted SVC at SXSW. It was the largest explicitly Christian gathering at South by this year. Last year's event included a “keynote conversation” with actor Zachary Levi, cultural conversations about Christianity in tech spaces, and music, including musicians Matt Maher and For King and Country. The details on this year's event are vague, though its Sunday worship service appears still to be on. Christian artists appearing at South by this week include Mission and Sam Llanes. Christina South by Southwest has a significant technology component. In fact, it was at South by that Twitter was first rolled out, in the early 2000s. From those beginnings, social media has gone on to take over the world in many ways. Warren That's right, but now new laws are attempting to limit social media, especially in the lives of young people. One of those new laws was recently passed in Virginia. Christina But WORLD Magazine reports that a federal judge on Feb. 27 temporarily paused enforcement of the Virginia law. Warren The law would limit minors under 16 to one hour of screen time per social media platform per day.” The law was supported by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, the state's attorney general, and an overwhelming bipartisan majority of the Virginia legislature. Christina Nonetheless, U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles sided with NetChoice, an industry trade group representing YouTube, Google, X, Netflix, and other platforms. Warren The judge said the law violated First Amendment free speech protections. Giles said the 2025 law “burdens more speech than necessary as it requires all persons to verify their age before accessing speech that is protected for everyone.” The state has appealed the ruling. Christina And there's more trouble in the Anglican Church in North America. Warren ACNA appointed Bishop Julian Dobbs to be its acting archbishop back in November, when Archbishop Steve Wood was credibly charged with sexual harassment of one of his employees. Now, old accusations that Dobbs misappropriated $47,862 have been raised by one of his rivals, Bishop Derek Jones. Christina Jones left ACNA a few months ago following a controversy over his leadership of the military chaplains. He has formed a new denomination called the Anglican Reformed Catholic Church. Warren Dobbs is now suing Jones for defamation. Dobbs says the disputed sum is $3,750, and the money was not misappropriated, but temporarily put into the wrong back account. The mistake was caught and quickly corrected. Former Archbishop Foley Beach backs up Dobbs' version of the story. Dobbs asked a federal court in Alabama to order Bishop Derek Jones to pay compensatory and punitive damages. Christina That brings us to the end of this week's conversation. Any final notes before we go? Warren A few. Did you know I also write fiction? I published a novel back in 2017, and I'm working on a new novel now. The Blacklist, an influential community of screenwriters and novelists, is featuring my novel-in-progress Up The American on its site this week. If you want to read the excerpt they are publishing, I'll link to it in today's show notes. I have some travel coming up in the next couple of months, and I would love to see you. I will be in Los Angeles in April and Dallas in May. I will be doing reader lunches in both cities. Let me know if you would like to join us. My email is wsmith@ministrywatch.com. Christina The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm Christina Darnell, with my co-host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.
Dr. Jason Giles was not going to be an alcoholic for a very specific reason–his dad was an alcoholic and made him feel inadequate. He didn't go down that road, but becoming a doctor in the field of anesthesia gave him access to something else: fentanyl. In a major plot twist, what started as his own personal recovery turned into a passion for working with addicts. While other doctors don't have to necessarily share in the same plight as their patients, Dr. Giles is convinced that there is something special about him being able to understand where his patients have been as well as them seeing the promise in where the work of recovery could lead. This week we are trying to avoid joining the school talent show while we discuss “The Puppet Show”! We're talking the cavernous catacombs under this school, that Joyce only thinks of bills and taxes, Principal Quark's weird psychosexual obsession with Flutie, damsel in distress Giles, and how heartwarming it is that Cordelia has embraced self-love. We rolls our eyes as they really try to wring some pathos out of the horny puppet dying, wonder if we've ever chortled, try to identify a horse girl among the cast, and have some questionable beef with people with terminal illnesses. Please note: Submit Season 1 and movie questions to us by March 22!Send us an email at sunnydalenationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Instagram!

As How to Fix Democracy opens its seventh season on democratic resilience, host Andrew Keen welcomes Maury Giles, the new CEO of Braver Angels, for a candid conversation about whether American democracy can withstand what Giles calls the "industrial outrage complex." In a year marking the nation's 250th anniversary, Giles argues that resilience is not something institutions deliver from above, but something citizens practice from below. Drawing on his experience leading one of the country's largest cross-partisan civic movements -and on the lived reality of raising a political divided family of ten- he makes the case for "courageous citzenship", the discipline of choosing to act rather than react. Together Keen and Giles explore why polarization in 2026 may feel more toxic than a decade ago, how performative politics and social media have eroded trust, and why dialogue alone is no longer enough without collaborative local action. They confront hard questions about government incentives, declining institutional trust, and whether putting down our devices might be a precondition for rebuilding civic culture. Yet the tone remains cautiously hopeful: if the pain of division is finally high enough, Americans may be ready to change. In the end, this episode suggests that democratic renewal will not come from one side defeating the other, but from citizens rediscovering their agency, and practicing resilience as a daily civic habit.
Giles faces a technological terror...with a familiar voice! What happens when Giles tries to embrace artificial intelligence? Let's just say his vision of a smooth, automated front desk experience doesn't quite pan out. Between an AI with a mind of its own (not to mention a voice that sounds suspiciously familiar) and the arrival of a certain enthusiastic resident, things go sideways in the most hilarious way possible. Can Giles get the kiosk working? Can AI make any sense out of the new information it is getting? And how does Miss Falmacher figure into all of this? Listen now to find out in an episode that proves sometimes the best technology is no technology at all (especially when Danny Hillcrest is around). This week we are getting catfished by online demons while we discuss “I, Robot… You, Jane”! We're talking how monks hate to see a bisexual demon winning, Boomer Queen Willow and her love of ellipses, how they can't shut down the school every time someone dies or nothing would get done, and join the technopagan Jenny Calendar fan club. Conflict entrepreneurs get money, influence and power by sparking anger and outrage. The Braver Angels call for courageous citizenship does precisely the opposite. In this podcast we hear the case for citizen power not paralysis, action not reaction, and why building America's civic muscle is so much better than burning things down. Here is a passionate, thoughtful and curious conversation between Braver Angels C.E.O. Maury Giles and Wilk Wilkinson, Director of Braver Angels Media Operations. Both came to their work with the campaign after years in the private sector. Maury and Wilk are conservatives in a movement where a majority is either independent or leans blue. Our episode is the latest in more than two dozen "How Do We Fix It?" discussions on the people, projects and ideas of America's largest organization committed to civic renewal and building trust across partisan divides. The edited recording was first published in longer form by Wilk's podcast, "Derate The Hate"."At the end of the day the common thing we're trying to get to is how do you get out of the outrage cycle so you can see clearly what you're going to do next," says Maury.Hear about about America's crisis of mistrust, and the responsibility of citizens to act with courage, instead of reacting with fury and fear. Gain a fully understanding of the case for courageous citizenship. Learn why it's important to recruit more conservatives to our movement. Get the scoop about "A Pledge Renewed", the theme of this year's Braver Angels Convention in Philadelphia. This episode covers them all and a good deal more. Here's a link to "The Power of Giving Away Power How The Best Leaders Learn to Let Go", by Matthew Barzun, mentioned by Maury during the conversation. This week we tried (unsuccessfully, messily, hauntingly) to mate a canary with a cockerel – all in a bid to impress our guest, former Norwich and Tottenham footballer, turned performance psychologist, Paul McVeigh. Having played more than 270 professional games, as well as earning 20 caps for Northern Ireland, Paul kicked ball with and against some legendary players, earning a few trophies, a few promotions and, perhaps the ultimate honour, his own song. But rather than go off and do the sort of generic post-playing jobs many ex-pros go for (like moaning about stuff on the tv. Or moaning about stuff on the radio. Or moaning about stuff on a podcast etc.) Paul has bottled up all his remarkable experiences in sport and used them to help all kinds of leaders to perform when it matters most.As a highly respected performance psychologist, Paul has built a super-successful second career out of helping to dismantle the old narratives about shouty, macho, ego-driven leadership, through his coaching and his two excellent books: ‘The Stupid Footballer is Dead' and ‘It's Not About You: The Psychology of Leadership. In a chat where Giles tries really, really hard not to dribble ‘Spurs' all over the conversation, we ponder the most common mistakes, and misunderstanding, when it comes to ‘being the boss', and some of the most influential sporting figures who inspired Paul's philosophies on leadership. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
In this second part, former professional documentary photographer Giles Penfound and I are back at Penwood in Berkshire, England, to make one special single picture using 5x4, paying homage to the late Dennis Lee, an American community member who passed at the start of 2026. In this episode, you get to see what all of that waiting, all of that patience, actually produced. We reveal the finished photograph: the large-format portrait of a remarkable tree. We also pick up the conversation where we left it, talking more about what happens when you deliberately take your foot off the accelerator, not just as a photographer, but as a person moving through the world. Giles came from documentary work, where speed and instant story were everything, and watching him operate with a 5x4 plate camera in a quiet wood in Berkshire is about as far from that as you can get. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
Sometimes the most profound photographs aren't made in an instant, they're cultivated over days, even weeks. In this special two-part episode, I walk with photographer Giles Penfound in Penwood in Berkshire, as he slows down to make a single large-format image of a giant tree, a portrait created in honour of a photographer known to us both. Working with a 5x4 plate camera, Giles has transformed his practice from the fast-paced world of documentary work to something more deliberate, contemplative, and rooted in presence. Across two weeks, we explore what it means to truly slow down: waiting for light, sitting with a 'subject', and navigating the mental space that opens up when you're no longer chasing the next frame. We discuss mental health, the quality of light, and choosing a different pace of life in a world that demands speed. This is photography as meditation, as ritual, as a way of being fully present with the world. Read more about our photographic adventures on our photography travel website, The Journey Beyond. Lost in today's media landscape? Or are you just curious as to how the industry got here? You need to go back to Marshall McLuhan, the grandfather of media literacy, and the grandfather of this week's special guest. On this week's Media Roundtable: Special Edition, Dan Granger (CEO & Founder, Oxford Road) and Giles Martin ( EVP, Strategy, Oxford Road) welcome the legacy media guru Andrew McLuhan (Director & Founder, The McLuhan Institute).Andrew's work continues the legacy of his grandfather (Marshall McLuhan) and father (Eric McLuhan). The McLuhan family's work is enormously relevant to marketers: it's all about the effect media and technology have on people. When marketers decide which channels to use and how to craft & place their messages, they would do well to draw on McLuhan's insights.Dan, Giles, and Andrew are talking: Early Media Literacy, The Media is The Message, and Hot vs. Cool. Let's dig in.“ Nobody loves being sold stuff, so you're already at a disadvantage. But people do love creativity. This week we are trying to balance dating and slaying while we discuss “Never Kill a Boy on the First Date”! We're talking how much Giles does not care about cute boys or cute boy drama, Xander somehow getting an invite to Girl's Night, how sadly The Master's air jiggling now has an explanation, and that performatively reading at lunch doesn't do as much for him as Owen seems to think. We wonder if planes have accordions, keep forgetting that we don't know Angel is a vampire yet, debate Looney Tunes watch vs. bespoke pocket watch for impressing girls, and embarrassing barricades.Send us an email at sunnydalenationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Instagram!

This week, we're joined again by Lachlan Giles for a deep rethink of what "fundamentals" really mean in modern Jiu-Jitsu. Rather than treating fundamentals as a fixed list of techniques, Lachlan argues they should be defined by goals, rulesets, and outcomes. He explains why competitors may benefit more from guard retention and winning early exchanges than from late-stage escapes, how mindset and time allocation shape development, and why specialization often beats chasing the meta.Follow Lachlan on Instagram:https://instagram.com/lachlan_gilesTrain with Lachlan at Absolute MMA in St. Kilda, Australia:https://absolutemma.com.auLearn online with Lachlan at SUBMETA (seriously, do it):https://submeta.ioMental models discussed in this episode:Controlling the Distancehttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/controlling-the-distanceOpening Salvoshttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/opening-salvosWin Conditionshttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/win-conditionsDefense Paradoxhttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/defense-paradoxLayers of Guardhttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/layers-of-guardPrevention Over Curehttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/prevention-over-cureFunnelinghttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/funnelingZone of Geniushttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/zone-of-geniusShuharihttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/shuhariCurse of Knowledgehttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/curse-of-knowledge⬆️ LEVEL UP with BJJ Mental Models Premium! The world's LARGEST library of Jiu-Jitsu audio lessons, our complete podcast network, online coaching, and much more! In this episode of the Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report, host Butch Thierry delivers a wide-ranging look at winter fishing conditions along the northern Gulf Coast, touching on everything from offshore tuna runs to inshore redfish, sheepshead, and the ongoing struggle to pattern speckled trout. The show opens with a candid offshore report from Captain Brandon Collier, who details a long run on the Blackjack in pursuit of yellowfin tuna that turned into a battle with heavy boat pressure and overwhelming numbers of sharks. Although tuna were clearly present and feeding early, Collier explains how timing, crowding, and shark activity made landing a fish nearly impossible, forcing a pivot to bottom fishing on natural structure. That plan B paid off with lane snapper, porgies, and tilefish, along with a useful breakdown of how to identify productive bottom using electronics, zoom settings, and life marks before ever dropping bait. The conversation shifts inshore as Collier shares a bright spot in an otherwise tough winter, describing memorable sight-fishing trips for bull redfish and black drum along shallow flats and barrier island shorelines. Using clear water, sunshine, and elevation from kayaks, towers, or even drones, he explains how spotting dark shapes and schools is often more important than worrying about tide or temperature. He also breaks down finesse presentations with buoyant soft plastics that can be dead-sticked in shallow water, triggering bites even when anglers aren't actively working the lure. At the same time, he doesn't sugarcoat the current speckled trout bite, describing a frustrating pattern of short strikes, slaps, and non-committal fish that seem more reactive than hungry, often forcing anglers to rely on jerkbaits and treble-hook lures to convert bites. Later in the episode, Drew Giles checks in with a detailed sheepshead report, focusing on how persistent wind, low tides, and dirty water have pushed anglers to adapt. Giles explains why clean water remains the key ingredient, even if it means fishing outside the Delta or tucking in tight to protected structure near shore. He walks through subtle but important rigging adjustments, like switching from heavy jig heads to split shots and mosquito hooks to reduce hang-ups on oyster bottoms and submerged timber, while still keeping baits in the strike zone. The discussion highlights how current movement, even more than temperature, drives sheepshead feeding behavior, and why anglers should be willing to move frequently rather than grind unproductive spots. The episode wraps with Captain Shane Traylor offering a deep dive into how he's leaning on electronics to stay effective during one of the most confusing trout seasons in recent memory. Trailer explains how side scan and down imaging help him locate bait, structure, and tightly packed "football-shaped" fish marks before making a cast, especially when trout slide into deeper channels during prolonged cold snaps. He breaks down jig weights, fall rates, and bottom-oriented presentations that keep lures in front of lethargic fish, along with how he transitions from trout to redfish and sheepshead around docks, cut banks, and barnacle-covered pilings when trout refuse to cooperate. Altogether, the episode delivers an honest, boots-on-the-deck snapshot of winter fishing on the Gulf Coast, emphasizing adaptability, observation, and having a solid plan B when conditions or fish refuse to play along. In this special episode, we go behind the scenes of the 6-time BAFTA-nominated film I Swear (2026) with the filmmaking team! In Part 1, Giles Alderson and Dom Lenoir sit down with producers Piers Tempest (The Wife, William Tell) and Georgia Bayliff (Paradise Highway) from Tempo Productions. They discuss the reality of financing independent British drama in 2026, how they packaged a film about Tourette's syndrome as a crowd-pleasing theatrical event, and the role of a producer during a busy awards season. In Part 2, Giles and Dom are joined by writer/director Kirk Jones (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee, Everybody's Fine). Kirk reveals why he returned to his indie roots for this passion project, the challenge of directing Robert Aramayo's transformative performance (nominated for Best Actor), and how he raised finance and balanced humor with the gritty reality of the true story. Gammer Gurton’s Garland, published in 1784, is one of the earliest collections of English nursery rhymes, and contains verses both familiar and alarmingly unsettling. Intended to be read to toddlers (i.e., “children who can neither read nor run,” according to its subtitle) and named after a fictitious Grandma (“Gammer”) Gurton, who'd be analogous to Mother Goose, the volume were assembled by the eccentric scholar Joseph Ritson, who was known for his collecting of Robin Hood ballads, vegetarianism and ultimate descent into madness. Portrait of Joseph Ritson by James Sayers, early 1800s. We begin our episode with a snippet of a 1940s' rendition of “Froggy Went a-Courting” by cowboy singer Tex Ritter. It's a relatively modern take on Ritson's “The Frog and the Mouse.” But like quite a few rhymes in the collection, this one had appeared in print earlier. Already in 1611, British composer of rounds and collector of ballads, Thomas Ravenscroft, had written out both lyrics and musical notation for “The Marriage of the Frogge and the Mouse,” a song he described as a folk song or “country pastime.” While a few other rhymes in Ritson's collection were borrowed from one of two earlier editions of nursery verses (both published as Tommy Thumb’s Song Book 40 years earlier), most of what he collected appeared for tge first time in Gammer Gurton’s. We hear a bit about some of the familiar rhymes that premiered in this collection, including Goosey, Goosey Gander, Ride a Cock-Horse to Banbury Cross (with the “rings on her fingers and bells on her toes” lady), Bye, Baby Bunting, and There Was an Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe.” Ritson's version of the last, however, takes a rather rude and unexpected turn. 1865 edition of Gammer Gurton’s Many, if not most, of Ritson's rhymes seem to have been weeded out of the gentile or sentimental collections we know today. Naturally, we devote attention particularly to these objectionable verses. Included are a handful of aggressively nonsensical rhymes, which could pass for 18th-century Dada and verses notable for their cruelty. The most alarming contain brutal slurs, threats, and playful references to assault, adultery, matricide, suicide, and animals going to the gallows. The last third of our episode is dedicated to poems noteworthy for their survival as musical ballads. The first discussed is the basis for song “Lady Alice,” which later appears in James Child's 1860 collection The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. Ritson's version, “Giles Collins and Proud Lady Anna,” is a greatly simplified version of the ballad later cited by Child. While toddlers might appreciate the simpler storytelling, the subject matter — namely, doomed lovers — is not the normal stuff of healthy nursery rhymes. More surprising, is the fact that Ritson's story begins with Giles Collins in the process of dying and Lady Anna dead (of heartbreak) within a few verses. After their deaths, a tentative suggestion of undying love, a lily reaching from Giles' grave toward Anna's, is destroyed – an unhappy turn on the not uncommon motif of a rose and briar entwining over lovers' graves. We close with a discussion of “The Gay Lady who Went to Church,” an innocuous-sounding rhyme, intertwined with the history of two rather gruesome folk songs popular around Halloween: “There Was an Old Lady All Skin and Bones” and “The Hearse Song” AKA “The Worms Crawl In.” Also discussed is a surprising link between Ritson's nursery rhyme and a faux-historical ballad invented for the very first Gothic novel, Matthew Gregory Lewis' The Monk.
