The lady in Eden says she's come to answer the pilgrim's questions. And he's got one. It just might not be the first question on our minds. But it's one that reveals the hall of mirrors that the poet has created in COMEDY, in which the poem itself justifies its own fictional if scientific answers to questions that lead the fictional pilgrim (and the very real reader) to a position of faith, based on the imagined landscape.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we work through the first of the lady's speech with our pilgrim (as well as Virgil and Statius) in the Garden of Eden at the top of Mount Purgatory. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:27] My English translation of PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 85 - 108. If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation with me, please find the entry for this episode on my website, markscarbrough.com.[04:06] The lady's six-line theological explanation for the Garden of Eden and the fall of mankind.[07:31] The lady's six-line scientific explanation for the breeze on the top of Mount Purgatory.[11:04] The lady's six-line glimpse of Paradise above.[12:54] The pilgrim's question of faith is built off the fictional landscape and its "scientific" answers found in the poem itself.[21:39] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 85 - 108.
Send us a textFrank stops by the show to discuss his solo record, his childhood adventures with his brother and so much more. *****Living Between the Lines is the debut solo LP from Frank Meyer. A long time coming, Meyer's been hinting at it for a while now with Bandcamp exclusive tracks, covers on tribute albums, acoustic solo shows, and his acclaimed collaboration album with Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers. Like the Eddie collab, LBTL is out on Kitten Robot Records. The 11-song album adds touches of blues and soul to Meyer's expected high-energy rock ‘n 'roll, revealing a more mature voice. He is joined for duets by longtime friend and collaborator Lisa Kekaula of the Bellrays on the title track, Runaways icon Cherie Currie on “Piece of Me” and Spaghetti himself on “Partners In Crime.”An award-winning musician, filmmaker and author, Meyer has a track record that covers rock ‘n 'roll, punk, heavy metal, blues, and country. Known for his work with everyone from Rock ‘n 'Roll Hall of Famers James Williamson (Iggy & the Stooges) and Wayne Kramer (MC5) to legendary punk act FEAR, Meyer has carved out a career full of unlikely collaborations, hard work, searing guitar playing, and ace songwriting skills.“It meant a lot to have these particular vocalists join me on my solo debut,” says Meyer. “Lisa and I go way back to my earliest days of the music scene in L.A.. Eddie is also an ld friend and touring buddy, and was a big inspiration in making this album. Cherie saw the Streewalkin' Cheetahs early on and helped us get signed. So all of them are dear to me and have been integral in my career.”As kids, Frank and his brother (actor Breckin Meyer) put on plays and lip-sync concerts for their parents. By age 12, lil 'Frankie was playing guitar, writing songs and recording at Frank Zappa's house with his childhood friends Ahmet and Dweezil. By age 15, he was gigging professionally around the ‘80s Hollywood club scene with his teenage high school band. In the mid-'90s, Meyer formed punk act the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, who went on to record many acclaimed albums, tour the world and carve out a niche as one of L.A.'s hardest working, hardest rocking bands. The band remains active with new releases and reissues out in stores on Rum Bar Records, Heavy Medication Records, and Ghost Highway Records, plus European and US touring activity.*****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. The lady in the forest has come to face the pilgrim and his poets across the stream in the forest. The pilgrim clearly feels a sexual attraction toward her, one that might even make us think of his reactions to Beatrice. She, however, has other ideas, like answering their many questions. Except in so doing, she raises even more questions than she has time to answer.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we work through this passage in PURGATORIO in which we first learn we're wandering around in the Garden of Eden. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:37] My English translation of PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 67 - 84. Jessica Wynn uncovers Black Friday's dark secrets — fake discounts, cheaper products, and manufactured urgency — on this week's Skeptical Sunday.Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by writer and researcher Jessica Wynn!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1245On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:Black Friday "deals" are often illusions. Many retailers quietly raise prices weeks before, then discount back to regular prices, creating fake savings that trigger dopamine responses rather than actual financial benefits.Tiered manufacturing means bargains are literally inferior products. Companies create cheaper versions of items specifically for Black Friday sales, using plastic instead of metal parts and downgraded components you won't notice until they fail. The shopping frenzy is engineered chaos. Retailers deliberately create urgency and scarcity to exploit loss aversion, where the pain of missing a discount feels greater than the pleasure of getting the item itself.Scammers weaponize Black Friday urgency. Phishing sites, fake URLs, and fraudulent sellers exploit the fast-paced nature of Black Friday sales to steal personal information and payment details from rushed shoppers. You can outsmart the system by planning ahead. Create a wishlist of genuinely needed items before sales begin, compare model numbers, check price histories with tools like CamelCamelCamel, and only buy what you already planned to purchase.Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Our pilgrim, Dante, calls the solitary lady over to him. She can't cross the stream that divides them, but she can dance in place before coming closer to him.All the while, the poet keeps darkening the poetry around her with threatening references in the pilgrim's mouth--that is, classical examples of profane love that end up in tragic circumstances. And all this, despite our poet quoting repeatedly from his rival poet's poem.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we watch meaning get thicker and thicker at the top of Mount Purgatory. If you'd like to help support this podcast by underwriting its many fees, please consider a one-time donation or a small monthly stipend, using this PayPal link right here. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:30] My English translation of PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 43 - 66. If you'd like to read along or drop a comment about this episode to continue the conversation, please find its spot on my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:53] What if wandering is the start of some of the most significant journeys?[08:22] My interpretive thesis: The solitary lady is the only fully fictional character in COMEDY.[12:30] The poet Dante is cribbing a pastoral poem by his literary rival, Guido Cavalcanti.[18:14] Two reasons Dante may have cribbed Cavalcanti's pastoral poem: 1) to assuage Dante's own guilt in Cavalcanti's death or 2) to show the limits of Cavalcanti's (and others') poetry.[22:59] Two classical exemplars from Ovid--Proserpina and Venus--darken the passage considerably.[27:48] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 43 - 66.

In part two of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, a panel of three federal judges on Tuesday blocked Texas from using a new congressional map drawn by Republicans in hopes of securing the party additional seats in the 2026 midterm elections, ruling 2-1 that the map in question appeared to constitute an illegal, race-based gerrymander. The matter now goes to the Supreme Court. Also President Trump has given new insight as to when Americans could expect to receive $2,000 dividend checks funded by the country's tariff revenue. On Nov. 17, Trump spoke with reporters in the Oval Office and shared that "individuals of moderate income" could expect dividends in the middle of 2026. Our pilgrim continues walking through the old-growth forest, so dark that very little light can get into its cooling shade. He is eventually blocked by two seemingly small things: a little brook flowing to the left and a solitary lady across the way, singing and picking flowers. But the poet Dante gives us hints that all is already not what it seems.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we continue our journey across the top of Mount Purgatory . . . and notice that meaning is becoming layered over the naturalist details our pilgrim innocently notices. If you'd like to help cover the fees for this podcast with a one-time donation or a small monthly stipend, you can do so at this PayPal link right here. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:07] My English translation of PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 22 - 42. Donny Jackson, poet and psychologist, reflects on growing up as a working-class black kid in Pittsburgh where his father was a postal worker for 35 years and his mother was a nurse's aide—parents who instilled work ethic, integrity, and honor while navigating a world not built for young black children. Jackson traces the roots of American racism to the legacy of slavery where black people started as chattel on unequal footing and never shed that history, creating an internalized stain on both sides of the racial fence. He explains how separate but equal was never true, how tribalism prevents empathy development because it is much harder to oppress someone whose feelings you have taken into account, and why redlining and subtle discrimination in apartment rentals remain part of the disease of living a racialized life. Drawing from Isabel Wilkerson's research, Jackson highlights how FDR-era policies designed to improve American life excluded black people, creating structural racism that takes a toll. He warns that 70 million Trump voters represent at least 70 million reasons to remain fearful even after Biden's election. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
