Eavesdrop on lunch with Tor Books art director Irene Gallo as we discuss what it was like the first time she realized she wasn't the only one in the world who cared so strongly about art, how she felt the day she discovered Harlan Ellison as well as the title of his that made her go "whoa," why seeing book covers as thumbnails started long before the trend of Internet bookselling, how a manuscript moves from cover concept through to final cover, whether the cliche that an author is the worst possible designer of their own book cover is true, how self-published authors who create their own books can get the best possible covers, and much more.
This week we are joined by Chesley and World Fantasy Award-winning designer, art director, editor and publisher Irene Gallo to discuss how she came to join Tor Books back in the 1990s, her career as an art director, her role in helping to establish Tor.com, and her work as Associate Publisher at Tor.com Publishing. As always, we'd like to thank Irene for taking the time to talk to us and hope you enjoy the episode. See you in while!
This week we welcome a record number of guests for a lively discussion of the state of short fiction. We discuss whether or not we're currently in a “golden age” of short fiction; the welcome growth of multicultural voices; the economic realities of the short fiction market; and how authors can build careers in such a diverse and complex publishing environment. Our guests are: Neil Clarke of Clarkesworld; Charles Coleman Finlay of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction; Irene Gallo of Tor.com; and Sheila Williams of Asimov's Science Fiction. We encourage you to support each of their fine publications. We'd also like to thank Charlie, Irene, Neil and Sheila for making the time to be part of the podcast.
This week I'm joined by Aidan Moher, creator of the Hugo award winning A Dribble of Ink blog. We talk about cover art, including the cover of his own short story collection and the covers created by Irene Gallo's team at TorDotCom for their new novella lineup.

As the heat builds, and clouds of pollen choke the skies, John E. O. Stevens, Fred Kiesche and Jeff Patterson find themselves of a mood to stare at the pretty pictures gracing the jackets and e-files of books and ponder how they came to be. To that end they have hobbled across the simmering landscape to seek out Irene Gallo, art director at Tor Books and Tor.com, to enlighten them on the process. The discussion encompasses the relationship between book and cover, deadlines, fan feedback, and the aesthetics of different decades. Will we ever see embossed covers come back? And what does it take for a cover to impress John? Irene also talks about her participation in the Illustration Master Class, and everyone recounts the culture they have recently consumed. Host Fred Kiesche, John E.O. Stevens and Jeff Patterson with Irene Gallo.
