Welcome back to another episode of the Rick's Rambles Podcast, your weekly mix of music history, storytelling, mental health reflection, and fun quirky holidays designed to inspire, inform, and entertain. This week's episode turns the spotlight on one of the most iconic American rock bands of all time—Chicago. We explore the band's fascinating history, surprising origins, and the deeper story behind their long-lasting success. From jazz-rock fusion beginnings to arena-filling hits, Chicago's journey is richer and more complex than most listeners realize. In our Mental Health Moment, we look at what it means when life doesn't go according to plan—those detours, delays, and unexpected roadblocks that can feel frustrating in the moment but often shape us in meaningful ways. It's a grounding reflection on resilience, patience, and perspective. Our Story Behind the Song features the timeless classic “The Long and Winding Road” by The Beatles. We unpack the emotional depth of the song, its creation, and the legacy it left as one of the most heartfelt compositions in modern music history. The song itself, The Long and Winding Road, continues to resonate with listeners across generations. To close out the episode, we lighten things up with our signature segment: Fun, Quirky Holidays of the Week—a celebration of the unexpected, the unusual, and the just plain fun observances you never knew existed. Whether you're here for music history, personal reflection, or a little weekly joy, this episode of Rick's Rambles delivers a thoughtful and engaging journey through sound, story, and everyday life. Best of all, you will connect with your Celtic heritage. Please tell one friend about this podcast. Word of mouth is the absolute best way to support any creative endeavor. Climate change isn't happening because regular people failed. It's happening because a handful of billionaires got rich by wrecking the planet and buying politicians to protect their profits. Voting matters—but it's not enough. If elections alone fixed this, fossil fuel profits wouldn't still be breaking records. Real change happens every day. In how we travel. What we buy. Who we support. What we refuse to fund. Clean energy is already the cheapest power in history. Pollution is what costs us. We can't wait for bought politicians to save us. Every choice is a vote. Every dollar is pressure. And together, we outnumber them. Promote Celtic culture through music at http://celticmusicpodcast.com/. This is an episode of distraction for ourselves as well as you this week.
In this near-end episode of Joe & Reese's Pickle & Boot Shop, the duo kicks off with five-second "ab" workouts and Reese's mustache cop perks before Joe recounts his trailblazing fight for roofing mustaches, tattoos, and beards (complete with a suspension and tattoo-removal orders). They roast bad Christmas movies like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (but defend It's a Wonderful Life), dive into Reese's "band dad" phase and his kids' Five Iron Frenzy obsession, and ponder a last-gasp Steve Taylor guest spot. Today's Headlines: The government shutdown just passed 40 days, but there's finally a flicker of hope: the Senate reached a tentative deal to reopen the government through January, with at least 10 Democrats agreeing to back a short-term funding bill in exchange for a vote next month on extending Obamacare tax credits—a proposal many Democrats previously called “laughable.” Meanwhile, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked a lower court's order requiring the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP benefits, and Trump's USDA quickly told states to stop processing payments. Trump also floated a flurry of financial gimmicks over the weekend—like 50-year mortgages, direct cash “subsidies,” and a $2,000 tariff dividend—while his own Treasury Secretary contradicted him on national TV. Abroad, Trump met with Hungary's Viktor Orbán, granting him a sanctions exemption on Russian oil in exchange for $600 million in U.S. gas contracts. The shutdown is also stalling weapons sales to Ukraine and NATO allies and causing massive flight delays ahead of Thanksgiving. Elsewhere, Cornell struck a controversial deal with the administration to restore funding after discrimination probes, Florida sued Planned Parenthood over abortion pill safety (again, against all science), and in Virginia, a 19-year-old college student beat his former high school teacher in a local election—proving democracy sometimes delivers sequels no one saw coming.
