I'm extremely proud of all he's accomplished. From winning a Butterfinger art contest to crashing the Music Video Awards, he was always the coolest guy in my rotation. These days we don't see each other as often as I'd like, but when we do, we're right back in the thick of things. In this episode of Neighborhood Comics Convo, we talk about Waco's animation career, getting blackout in Savannah for his 21st birthday and his new Kickstarter graphic novel project. Look what Wednesday has given you! A brand-spankin' new episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! It's going to be a great day, as new comics are out today and you have Cullen, Jerry, and John to talk nerdy with for the next hour. The big book of the week has to have been DC KO #5, wrapping up the battle between Luthor Superman and Darkseid. And as much as this was an ending to the mini-series, it serves as a teaser for what DC Comics has planned for the rest of 2026. Shocking news out of the Pacific Northwest this week, as Mike Richardson was let go from Dark Horse Comics. While, on the face of it, that was a shock to many people in the industry, reading between the lines shows that this move was bound to happen. We just were not expecting it this week in this manner. Did you see the trailer for Lanterns coming later this year on HBO? We cannot wait to hear Kyle Chandler's southern drawl reciting the Green Lantern oath. The Beauty wrapped up season 1 over at FX/Hulu. Will there be a season 2? We are just two weeks away from Planet Comicon. We got some panel news to share with you, and we expect you to attend all of them.  We have our weekly Pick 3 choices, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics.  We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint's Comics, 815 N Noland Road in Independence, Missouri. Whether it is new comics, trade paperbacks, action figures, statues, posters, or T-shirts, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you find exactly what you need. You should also know that Clint's Comics has the most extensive collection of back issues in the metro area. If you need to find a particular book to complete a title's run, head to Clint's or check out their website at clintscomics.com. Tell them that the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! sent you.

Retired Intelligence Detective Gary Jenkins brings you the best in mob history through his unique perspective on the mafia. In this episode of Gangland Wire, Gary Jenkins welcomes an unusual guest from the world of organized crime storytelling—cartoonist Brett Juliano, creator of the Dust Bunny Mafia comic series. Instead of traditional books or documentaries, Brett tells real Mafia stories through short, three-panel comics featuring his unique cartoon characters while staying grounded in historical research and documented sources. Brett explains how his lifelong interest in animation and storytelling evolved into a project that blends true crime history with visual humor and commentary. After moving to Chicago, he became fascinated with the city's underworld history and began transforming real mob stories into illustrated comic strips that challenge Hollywood myths and highlight lesser-known facts about organized crime. His work draws on true crime books, FBI files, court transcripts, and podcasts, including Gangland Wire itself. Each comic strip distills a real historical moment into a visual gag or ironic twist that reveals the strange reality behind mob legends. Gary and Brett discuss several Dust Bunny Mafia comics and the real events behind them: The “Sicilian Flu” Courtroom Act A humorous look at a tactic sometimes used by mob figures: appearing frail in court to gain sympathy or delay proceedings. Wiseguys who were partying the night before might suddenly appear in a wheelchair, wrapped in blankets or hooked to oxygen tanks when they walked into court. Lucky Luciano and the Myth of “Lucky” Brett examines the legendary story that Charles “Lucky” Luciano got his nickname after surviving a brutal kidnapping and beating. His comic plays with the idea that mobsters often exaggerated their own legends—especially when trying to impress people. The Kansas City Mob Search – Carl “Tuffy” DeLuna One comic comes directly from Gary Jenkins' own experience investigating the Kansas City mob. When police searched DeLuna's home in 1979, the mobster calmly offered coffee and eventually led investigators straight to the basement, where incriminating notes were stored. The scene shows how, sometimes, the truth of organized crime investigations is stranger than fiction. Bugsy Siegel in Rainy Portland Another comic explores the obscure story of Bugsy Siegel visiting Portland to meet local crime boss Al Winters, only to endure two straight weeks of rain—highlighting the contrast between Hollywood-style mob glamour and the less glamorous reality of underworld negotiations. A New Graphic Anthology on Kickstarter Brett is now launching a major new collection of his comics titled: “Family Business: An Offer You Can't Refuse.” The book will include: 130+ pages of full-color comics More than 230 true crime strips Historical commentary explaining the real story behind each comic Additional artwork parodying mob businesses and underworld culture The project will be funded through a Kickstarter campaign beginning March 24, with the finished book expected to ship later in the year once printing is completed. Concept vs. Conceit — Why Some Comic Ideas Take Off (and Others Stall)

What's the difference between a concept and a conceit — and why does confusing the two quietly sabotage so many comics? In this episode, Brad and Dave break down one of the most important (and misunderstood) distinctions in storytelling. A concept is the engine that drives your story forward. A conceit is a clever wrapper that might look great… but doesn't go anywhere. If you've ever launched a comic that felt strong at first but ran out of momentum, this conversation will hit home. We talk about: Why constraints actually fuel creativity How to test whether your idea has real staying power The danger of building a comic around a gimmick And how to strengthen your story before you spend months drawing it Today's show: A comic without recurring characters UPDATE: ComicLab accent challenge UPDATE: Amazon Advantage UPDATE: DoubleDogBook.com How to do a sarcastic word balloon Takeaways Character design plays a crucial role in storytelling. Comics can thrive without a central protagonist. Idea-driven comics have historical precedence. Naming a comic can be a challenging but essential task. Feedback is vital in the creative process. Constraints can enhance creativity and focus. Monosyllabic titles are often more memorable. A good title can significantly impact a comic's success. The creative journey involves trial and error. Sharing ideas at smaller levels can reveal what resonates. Avoiding sunk cost fallacy is crucial in decision-making. Amazon Advantage can lead to unexpected losses. Understanding the costs of shipping is essential for profitability. Sarcasm in comics requires careful visual and textual cues. Bold lettering can enhance the impact of sarcasm. Walt Kelly's techniques in lettering were innovative but sometimes excessive. Comic creators should consider the visual presentation of dialogue. A well-crafted word balloon can convey emotion effectively. The legacy of past cartoonists informs current practices.
