On New Year's Day, comedian Jen Murphy boarded a cruise ship out of Miami and got ready to perform for 1,800 people. She never did end up getting on that comedy stage, though. Instead, she ended up getting trapped in a COVID cruise quarantine.Today, Murphy gives us a hilarious and intense look into why she got on a cruise ship in the middle of the pandemic in the first place and what she learned from it.More reading:Shame and fish filets: Diary of a comedian trapped in COVID cruise ship quarantineCruise passengers share what it's like to be on a ship with COVID casesVisit Jen Murphy's website

The Legends head to a Reality TV show from Hell because of course they do. What's so great about this show though is how they take silly premises and make them really great ways of exploring their characters. That's probably the best contribution that Legends of Tomorrow has right now. The story is the story (and there's nothing wrong with that. It's fun). But it's the larger journey of how this show continues on, unapologetically being who it is. And it's pretty progressive as well. We also talk about that Moon Knight trailer as well as a 2 hour and 47 minute runtime for The Batman. Kriss and Dpalm record the Mailbag at the end of every month. Conscious Parenting & Deschooling Re-examining how we live, learn and parent. Welcome to episode 116. This episode is a recording of my December Clubhouse room with Tira Hunter, Erika Kessliman and Missy Willis. Our theme ~ Conscious Parenting and Deschooling goes deeper into our journey of learning and self refelction. Tira Hunter is an unschooling mom to 18 year old Zoi. Tira decided to homeschool Zoi part way through elementary school and after trying to replicate school at home with misery, they found the path to unschooling. With unschooling, Zoi was able to exercise her independence and creativity. Zoi works as a commissioned artist and is currently writing her own comic. Tira is an advocate for the deschooling process. Erica Kesilman is an unschooling mom to 3 children, ages 2, 5 & 7. She is a previous public school educator and is now a certified conscious parenting coach. She feels that conscious parenting and reflection is a necessary part of the deschooling process. Missy Willis is an unschooling mom to her 2 children, ages 19 and 14. They have unschooled for 13 years and counting. She is a former teacher and now supports parents through her writing and conversations at Let 'em Go Barefoot. Deschooling~ A quick definition I define deschooling as the concept of living life and learning outside of the ideas of the traditional institution of school. The idea of learning and school is often synonymous. The belief that is supported is that learning is only done within the walls of the classroom and top down with certain people. Instead we start to look at learning as an internal process, inclusive with community, at different times and stages. Living and learning comes together. Getting comfortable with allowing learning to happen in a different way than we have done it. In This Episode This episodes shares personal reflections from 3 parents that found their way to unschooling and why deschooling has been such an important part of their family's transition from school. This is what you will hear in this episode.... Words that defined our conversation- flexibility, retooling, space, wisdom, power, sovereignty, respect, self worth, trust, connection, worthiness, intentions, values, genius, agency and relationship. What is deschooling and why is it important? What is conscious parenting Conscious parenting practices Where do our beliefs come from? Replicating school at home- School think vs Unschooling & Homeschooling Looking at our values as a family Why homeschooling is nothing like school Exploring freedom for our children and for ourselves What to do when your partner is not on the same page of the deschooling process? If you have seen "Inside," you know that it is pretty unique as far as comedy specials go. It was shot entirely by Bo during the course of the pandemic inside of his LA guest house and touches on very millennial themes, such as the effects of the internet and social media on our collective mental health and his mental health specifically, anti-capitalism, turning 30 and thinking about what you have accomplished thus far in your life. We talk with Shreye Saxena (his 4th appearance on the show, making him the most featured guest!) about his thoughts on the show, ranging from its depiction of mental health, the commodification of wokeness, and the constant balance of authenticity vs. performativity ever since we started expecting depictions people's real lives instead of made-up stories due to YouTube, Instagram, and other elements of media that have turned the cameras back on everyday people instead of just celebrities and movie stars. This time out Andy and Mike begin an informal series of episodes where they talk about the times Batman crossed over with a character or property from another fictional universe. First up is DC Special Series #27, or as it is more commonly known BATMAN VS THE INCREDIBLE HULK!
“Why are women, who have the whole male world at their mercy, not funny? Please do not pretend to know what I am talking about.” So begins a 2007 Vanity Fair article by Christopher Hitchens called “Why Women Aren't Funny”. College student Bess Kalb picked up a copy of the magazine, read it on her train ride from New York to Rhode Island, and, in her words, “became radicalized.” She decided then and there to drop out of school and become a comedy writer. She scored an internship with The Colbert Report and then (“because I'm an anxious Jew who is the daughter of two anxious Jews”) went back to finish her degree before working for Jimmy Kimmel for eight years. (And scoring a few awards while working there!) She then puts out a “ghost memoir” in 2020 called Nobody Will Tell You This But Me which becomes a big New York Times bestseller and ranked one of the best books of the year by Vogue, Forbes, Wired and others. (Jodi Picoult said “I have not been so profoundly moved by a book in years.”) Today Bess Kalb is 34 years old. She lives in Hollywood with one kid and another on the way. And she is a truly prolific comedic genius. She's been nominated for an Emmy and a Writer's Guild Award and has also written for The Academy Awards, The Democratic National Convention, and her incredible special Yearly Departed (where she is Creator, Executive Producer, and Head Writer). Do you know Yearly Departed? Leslie and I loved it. You can stream it on Amazon Prime. (2020 or 2021!) Bess came up with the idea of developing a comic sendoff to 2020 with a mock funeral featuring female comics, each coming onstage to give short eulogies to parts of the year. Tiffany Haddish shows up. Sarah Silverman shows up. Dulcé Sloan shows up. Jane Fonda shows up. It's a huge hit and she pulls it off again in 2021. It's fresh and funny and creates wonderfully necessary sign-posts as we navigate the (hopefully?) tail-end of this horrible pandemic. With the brilliant full moon above our heads let's sit down with the equally brilliant Bess Kalb to talk about: how we keep anxiety at bay, how we help dismantle celebrity culture, what is one way to define success after making it up the ladder, how might we think about “diversity hiring”, what gender norms are baked into the comedy that we consume, what is a structurally perfect joke, what might a fake male virtual assistant buy you, and much, much, more, including the amazing Bess Kalb's 3 most formative books. Let's flip the page into Chapter 95 now… What You'll Learn: How can we keep our anxiety at bay? How can we ditch celebrity culture? What gender norms are baked into the comedy we consume? What is a structurally perfect joke? What can a virtual male assistant buy you? What's one way to define career success? How do we take down boy's clubs? Legends of tomorrow is back from break and so are we. This episode gives us a look at what's been happening with the evil Android team of Legends. It also carries on the theme of "What makes one human?" as we see that Gidget (evil Gideon) is controlling the evil androids by removing the most human parts of them. This becomes true with what happens to the android version of Sara when she's reprogrammed to just be an assassin and reduce her leadership skills to keep her in line. What makes this really work is that we've seen this in previous seasons with Sara struggling to accept that she's more than just an assassin. So to see Gidget reduce the android version of her to that was a good call back. We also do a mini-Mailbag episode and cover some listener emails from the last few months, CW sale speculation as well as David Ramsey's potential Justice U show. Kriss also has a confession to make about The Batman. Kriss and Dpalm record the Mailbag at the end of every month. This week we are sitting down with Kelsey Borlan Lee and Robert Lee, the Executive Producers of "Laugh After Dark", Amazon's award-winning stand-up comedy TV show. The pair never set out to be comedy producers. When they first started "Laugh After Dark" in 2018 they filmed the first two seasons in their living room. They had no idea what it would become and with the popularity of cancel culture it has never been more difficult for an aspiring comedian to break through. This week they are sharing their belief in a comedian's ability to take the irony, injustice, and idiocracy of this world as well as their own pain and synthesize it into something we can all laugh about, and when it's done right, something we can think about too.
