The last official sighting of 26 year old Maria Christina Requena was on New Year's Day 1991. A week later her dismembered body was found at a beauty spot 24 km away. The location was only a couple of km away from where the mutilated  body of 31 year old Linda Donaldson had been found in October 1988. Both women were sex workers and worked opposite ends of the East Lancs road that connects the cities of Manchester and Liverpool in the north west of England. The murders of Veronica Anderson in August 1991 and Julie Finley in 1994 have also been linked to a series of murders some journalists and cold case experts have apportioned to a killer referred to as the East Lancs Ripper. Tiny houses meets ex-offenders meets the housing crisis. Linda and her husband David, one day went from being entrepreneurs straight into debtor’s prison….literally. But this story ends up positive as the experience lead to David receiving “a calling” to serve those people they found themselves behind bars with. The result? Fresh Start Ventures, a new non profit organized to help ex-offenders avoid returning to prison. What’s really interesting about Fresh Start is they combine their mentoring work with housing...tiny house housing for ex offenders, through an innovative program that uses Tiny Houses as ADUs, community development and mentorship to create better and lasting opportunities for those coming out of prison.

Linda Donaldson had been found dreadfully mutilated and left in a remote field between Liverpool and Manchester, in 1988. Her death was the starting point of a wide-ranging inquiry into the unsolved murders of women across the UK. Many men were considered suspects, but none proved to be responsible. Cases went cold, killers went unapprehended, women continued to go missing and turn up murdered in shallow graves and by roadsides all over the country. In 2011 a new suspect appeared on the radar of Police forces all over the country. Christopher John Halliwell.

Following the murders of Linda Donaldson and Maria Requina in 1988 and 1991 respectively, Greater Manchester Police uncovered the signs of as many as twenty-one potential serial killers who were collectively responsible for more than one-hundred murders, and for a while they considered that there many have been a link between the two women's deaths. Their most promising suspects all drew blanks and detectives were left with a series of killings as more women from the cities of Liverpool and Manchester were left in the countryside between them. Most of the women murdered were working as prostitutes and their murders were more vulnerable women killed by predatory men, but there were several other options as to how they were killed. In 1996 the Greater Manchester Police initiated a special operation called Enigma. Operation Enigma set out to look for a pattern in the deaths of several women who were found murdered between Liverpool and Manchester. Their results were horrifying. Of the two-hundred and seven unsolved murders between 1986 and 1991, seventy were found to be split into twenty-one clusters of activity. Rather than one serial murderer who had killed Linda Donaldson in 1988 and Maria Requena in 1991, they were possibly looking at as many as twenty-one. Music by Russel J White
