What if “living large” actually meant living small? I had the opportunity to sit down with Robyn Yerian to talk about the Tiny House Living movement and how downsizing can actually expand our possibilities. From sustainability to creativity, Robyn shares how reimagining the spaces we live in opens doors to building something new—not just for ourselves, but for the world around us. This conversation is about more than tiny homes—it's about bold choices, meaningful change, and designing a life that leaves the world better than we found it. What's one small change you've made that had a big impact? Today, Grid Down Comms Up takes the microphone again for another great episode of the Prepping Academy. We do a short after-action report on the Eastern Tennessee Homestead Alliance festival, revisit a few items as we approach the one-year anniversary of the historic disaster caused by Hurricane Helene, and talk about radio and communications interference. We look at the common types of manmade interference and what you can do to ensure you aren't the cause, because making lots of people look for you isn't very gray man. We also discuss what you may want to consider adding to your plans if you experience intentional interference during an emergency. We also listened to an example of interference during my time in Eastern Tennessee with GSM and a much more entertaining example of some amateur operators trolling someone who is causing intentional interference to keep him talking until they locate him. I'll see you on the next episode. Support the showPlease give us 5 Stars! www.preppingacademy.com Daily deals for preppers, survivalists, off-gridders, homesteaders & everyday Americans. Grid Down Comms Up dives into the top ten prepping items for a natural disaster. According to NOAA, there were twenty-seven major natural disasters last year. They did 182 billion dollars in damage and caused 568 deaths. Of all the emergencies we prepare for, we are most likely to be caught up in a large-scale natural disaster. Will you be ready if one strikes your area? In today's episode, we look at the last five items on our list: defense, fuel, electricity, mental health, and building materials. We also toss in a bonus item for number eleven. Heavy equipment, while far from essential, is a game-changer if you can access it. If you are lucky enough to own some, keep them in working order and be able to help out. Remember, mental condition is a huge part of survival. If you or someone you know is at risk or experiencing a mental health crisis, reach out for help at the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline dial 988 or visit https://988lifeline.org/. Stay ready and prep on. Send us a textWhat happens when a devastating cancer diagnosis collides with a lifelong passion for audiology? For Dr. Carla "Brandi" Smiley, it became the catalyst for reimagining how hearing healthcare could reach those most often left behind.Diagnosed with bilateral hearing loss at age six, Dr. Smiley's path to becoming an audiologist wasn't straightforward. After teaching kindergarten, surviving stage four lymphoma during her doctoral studies, and working across various healthcare settings, she continually witnessed the same problem: barriers to access for underserved communities. The solution came in an unexpected form during the 2020 COVID lockdown. While watching Tiny House Nation, Dr. Smiley envisioned a fully-equipped mobile audiology clinic that could travel directly to patients. Despite facing skeptical builders and financial hurdles, she persevered, crowdfunding her dream and creating a 15,000-pound clinic-on-wheels designed with intentionality to welcome everyone."I've had people who were disheveled and dirty and felt they weren't worthy enough to sit," she shares with emotion. "I tell them, 'This can be cleaned. You are worthy.'" This commitment to dignity drives her work with Head Start programs, assisted living facilities, and veterans' services. The tiny house clinic goes beyond convenience, it transforms lives. Dr. Smiley recalls fitting hearing aids for a man in end-of-life care whose wife hadn't had a meaningful conversation with him in 20 years. After the fitting, the couple reconnected through their wedding album from the 1940s. "Those moments are why we do this," she reflects. For hearing care professionals interested in mobile services, Dr. Smiley offers practical wisdom: start by identifying what you're already doing that could be mobilized. With headquarters now in Peachtree City and specialized services including diagnostic ABRs and auditory processing evaluations, she continues seeking grant funding to provide care at no cost to those in need.Ready to discover how mobile audiology might transform your practice or community? On this week's episode of The Prepping Academy, we welcome a special guest, John Jacob Schmidt, founder of AmRRON, for a discussion on the history of AmRRON and what the future holds. We also discuss his new project, AmRRON Reloaded, and efforts to grow the ranks of individuals capable of effectively communicating in any emergency situation. Remember, the annual AmRRON national grid down communications exercise takes place later in July. It is your opportunity to test your skills and see what information you can receive during the exercise. Remember, if you do not have communications when the balloon goes up, you are just another refugee staring at your dead cell phone, wondering what just happened. In this episode of Grid Down Comms Up on the Prepping Academy, Patrick looks at tactical and team communications and strategic communications in a disaster. Team communications are a simple concept, but become surprisingly complex when users enter the equation. Frequency coordination and interference are a reality of a large-scale disaster scene. We discuss how that impacts operations and how we can avoid some of those issues. Strategic communication is frequently overlooked by the prepping and survival community, usually due to the lone wolf mentality. In a disaster, you aren't going to be the lone wolf; you may even be the voice of your community. Having the skills and tools to quickly and effectively relay the needs of those around you is critical to helping those who are trying to help you. In this episode, we look at some details and facts of communications to support the logistical log train to keep your community going in a disaster.

Our story tonight is called Tiny House, and it's a story about a snug, small space to relax in. It's also about impatiens for the flower bed, sunny days on the edge of the woods, hammocks and reading nooks, and the relief of having fewer decisions to make and more time to enjoy. Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Darla sits down with Sarah Bronstein to explore the fascinating world of tiny homes, discussing personal experiences, real estate insights, and the unique challenges of designing for small spaces. They delve into the appeal of tiny living, the potential for investment in tiny house communities, and the differences between commercial and residential tiny home design. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding client needs and the evolving landscape of tiny home living, particularly in areas like Asheville, North Carolina. Sarah discusses her dual passion for real estate and interior design, particularly in the context of tiny homes. She emphasizes the importance of understanding client needs, navigating property considerations, and the significance of due diligence in property buying. About Sarah: Hi! I'm Sarah and I live in a vintage travel trailer with my pup Albus. I am an interior designer, realtor, and host of the Nomadic Spaces podcast. My expertise is in vacation rental and tiny home design. After years as lead designer for a prominent vacation rental company I realized the corporate culture no longer aligned with who I was as a designer or as a person… so in 2020 I started Sukkha Interior Design and now I work with amazing clients creating beautiful spaces all over the country. ***
