In this episode of The Consult Room, I explore a topic that sounds like science fiction - but is very much real: pet cloning. You may have seen the headlines. Companies are now offering pet cloning services, allowing owners to preserve their pet's DNA and, in theory, create a genetic copy. But what does that actually mean in practice? In this episode, I break down how pet cloning works, the legal position in the UK, and the key ethical and welfare considerations. Most importantly, I explore what cloning doesn't do - it doesn't bring a pet back.Because while a clone may share DNA, it will never recreate the life, personality, or experiences that made the original animal unique. This is a complex topic, sitting at the intersection of science, emotion and ethics - and one that raises important questions about how we view our pets.In This EpisodeWhat pet cloning actually involvesHow the science behind cloning worksThe legal position in the UKThe role of surrogate animals in the processEthical concerns around welfare and reproductionWhy cloning does not recreate personalityThe emotional realities of cloning a petKey TakeawaysA cloned pet is not the same individual as the originalBehaviour and personality are shaped by environment, not just DNACloning raises important welfare concerns for surrogate animalsThe process is driven by emotion rather than medical needThis debate reflects broader questions about our relationship with animals

Around the world, engineers are working to protect the environment. In this episode, we introduce eight companies who are taking steps to safeguard the natural world. All have been shortlisted for the Engineering Matters Awards. The first three shortlisted entries look at ways of understanding the natural world. Petra Ringeltaube explains how RWE's SeaMi is taking a less invasive, ecosystems-based approach to monitoring biodiversity on wind farms. Emily Darling of the Wildlife Conservation Society explains how its tool MERMAID is allowing coral scientists to share data, and now, with new AI tools, identify species on reefs. Next, Peter Salome explains a new tool from Fugro that will speed the delivery of vital new subsea powerlines. We then look at the challenges of building new homes and the infrastructure needed to support them, while limiting harmful environmental impacts. Edward Selvey, a senior ecologist with Avove describes how the company helped mitigate the biodiversity impact of a new water pipeline. Helen Gibbon, a director at Renaissance, explains how the engineers implemented sustainable drainage for a new estate in Salford. And Siobhan Warfield-Beattie talks us through how Ayesa helped lower the carbon impact of a wastewater treatment plant in Arklow. At Derne Reach, in Yorkshire, Olivia Rowe tells us, Mott MacDonald Bentley has taken a different approach to wastewater, helping build an integrated constructed wetland. Finally, we learn about two projects seeking to restore nature. Matthew Hay of Nattergal describes the company's work at High Fen Wildland, where it is helping re-wet peatlands, in a way that shows how boosting nature can be a commercially viable investment. And Nick Cooper of Haskoning describes how the company has helped remove colliery waste from a Northumberland coastline. Stay tuned to the end of the episode to learn which entries won a position in this year's awards. Guests Petra Ringeltaube, environmental manager, RWE Emily Darling, director, coral reef conservation, WCS Peter Salome, innovation manager, Fugro Edward Selvey, senior ecologist, Avove Helen Gribbon, director, Renaissance Siobhan Warfield-Beattie, marketing director, Ayesa Olivia Rowe, project leader, Mott MacDonald Bentley Matthew Hay, natural capital manager, Nattergal Nick Cooper, technical director, Haskoning Category sponsor Support for this episode and the Environment Champion Category comes from FuturePlus. In this episode, we tell the story of MERMAID from the Wildlife Conservation Society, this year's Engineering Matters Awards Environment Gold Champion. Rita Bento, a researcher at NYU Abu Dhabi joins the episode, in an interview recorded in January 2026, to describe the work the university has been doing with regional partners to map coral reefs in the Persian-Arabian Gulf. And Angie Braithwaite, co-founder of Blue Alliance, describes how the nonprofit organization is using MERMAID to understand the effectiveness of marine protected areas. MERMAID allows the scientists to more easily map and understand the world's coral reefs, helping identify those that are more resilient to climate change.  In this episode, I speak with integrative psychotherapist Joseph Pawson to explore the territory of his forthcoming book, Dependency and Denial, which examines what happens when our need for others gets exiled from awareness, and what it costs us to keep it there. We talk about why dependency is not the pathological clinginess most people associate with the word, but something far more universal, the very basis of how we relate to each other and to the world. Joe describes how, when early experiences of not being met are too painful, we can build an identity around self-sufficiency that works so well it becomes its own kind of trap, particularly for people with strong intellects or high emotional capacity, the very people who are most able to survive without letting anyone in.We get into what denial actually looks like in someone who is functioning well on the surface, the kind of person who can talk about vulnerability with real fluency but cannot let anyone carry anything for them. Joe speaks honestly about writing the book partly as a letter to himself, and about his own difficulty with needing others. We also get into a fear I hear often: the conviction that if you allow yourself to need someone, you will need too much and overwhelm them entirely. Joe's book Dependency and Denial is published by Karnac Books. What happens when a farming family decides to become the first private landowner in Britain to legally relocate beavers onto their farm? How do you navigate the bureaucracy, the opposition from farming neighbours and the politics of wildlife management? And can beavers actually help a farm deal with the effects of climate change? To find answers to those questions I sat down with Tom Bowser, author of “Waters of Life: Fighting for Scotland's Beavers”, a book that tells the story of his journey from a self-described placid pacifist to a self-proclaimed radical fighting for beaver restoration.Tom's family has farmed at Argaty in central Scotland since 1916, running the farm with two aims: producing food sustainably and making it as good a home as possible for nature. From the 2000s, beaver escapes or unlicensed releases led to a wild beaver population in Tayside, much of it on prime arable farmland where they were often unpopular with farmers. The Scottish government gave them protected status in 2019 but also handed out lethal control licences with alarming ease. In the first year alone, one in five beavers of Scotland's tiny population was killed under licence. When Tom was approached about rehoming beavers that would otherwise be shot, he stepped into a process that tested his patience, his relationships with farming neighbours and his faith in the system.During our conversation, Tom shares hard-won lessons about bridging the divide between farmers and conservationists. We talk about the tribal dynamics that make these discussions so difficult and the importance of speaking to people like normal human beings rather than talking down to them. Tom also describes the real, measurable benefits beavers have brought to his farm, from reduced flood damage to water retention during heatwave summers. Tom's story is a reminder that restoring nature and producing food don't have to be an either-or proposition. It's a reminder that even when we dig into serious topics, a little heart still goes a long way. From there, things get real. Aaron tackles the latest case out of Texas, where several people were arrested for performing abortions illegally. He talks about the implications of these arrests, why due process matters, and how quickly “protecting health” can turn into government overreach. The big question: where do we draw the line between medical regulation and personal freedom? That theme — personal freedom — sets the tone for the rest of the show.MyCoffee is, without a doubt, the best coffee I've had in a long time. Rich, smooth, with low acidy makes a delicious cup of joe. It comes in light, medium, dark and decaf, as well as individual podsGet your own MyCoffee and get 50% off with a subscription and the promo code BARKER.Start your day off fighting for liberty with an awesome cup of freedom! What's on the show today?1. Abortion Laws in TexasAaron breaks down the story of a Texas midwife accused of performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license. He digs into why these cases matter far beyond the surface: it's not just about abortion — it's about what happens when the state starts deciding who can give medical advice or care.2. The Ohio “Conception Begins at Erection” BillYes, it's a real bill — and Aaron can't help but call it what it is: next-level trolling. Ohio Democrats introduced a proposal making it illegal for straight men to have unprotected sex without the intention of having a child. Aaron unpacks the ridiculousness, has some fun with the phrasing, and lands on the bigger point — government should stay out of people's bedrooms, period.3. Trans Candidates and “Deadnaming” Laws in OhioAaron discusses the controversy around new Ohio election forms requiring candidates to list all names used in the last five years. Some see it as discrimination against trans candidates; Aaron sees it as a background check issue. His take: transparency in public office matters, and context is everything.4. The Digital ID Push in the UKThe episode's headline topic — digital IDs and how they could pave the way for government tracking and control. Aaron reacts to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's push for mandatory digital IDs for employment and warns that immigration could be the excuse used to implement similar systems in the U.S. He connects the dots from COVID-era contact tracing to the growing normalization of digital surveillance — and reminds listeners that “safety” and “control” are often sold in the same package.5. Nick Sorter and the Crackdown on Free SpeechInvestigative journalist Nick Sorter becomes a key example in Aaron's discussion about how far governments and tech companies will go to silence voices that challenge the narrative. Sorter's experiences highlight a dangerous trend: if you question authority publicly, you risk losing your platform. Aaron ties this to the growing war on independent media and what it says about our society's comfort with censorship. Also, for those who have accused me of clipping Trump's comments or heavily editing it, here is the full clip with his comments on taking away free speech.6. The Fear of Martial LawFrom Washington's power plays to the streets of Portland, Aaron unpacks why the phrase “martial law” isn't just a conspiracy buzzword anymore. With a U.S. District Court decision restricting Trump's ability to deploy the National Guard during protests, he explores both sides — the necessity of maintaining order and the terrifying possibility of military control over civilians. His message is clear: the threat of martial law isn't about tanks in the streets — it's about normalized government authority over your daily life.Aaron's Weekly BreakdownWhether it's free speech bans, surveillance IDs, or the whisper of martial law, the story is always the same — control wrapped in the language of safety.Aaron's advice? Stay sharp, stay skeptical, and don't let fear be the reason you hand over your rights. And if the world's insanity gets too heavy — remember Eeyore the heroic dog. Because if a golden retriever can find hope, so can we.The Aaron Barker Show is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dame Dr Jane Goodall last week. A true legend, Jane was the world's most famous ethologist and conservationist, whose groundbreaking work in Gombe redefined our understanding of chimpanzees and our connection to the natural world. At just 26, with no formal scientific training, she moved from England to Tanzania and began observing chimpanzees in the wild. Her discovery that they used tools to feed themselves changed science forever and propelled her to international fame. That study - still running today - remains the world's longest continuous wildlife research project. From there, Jane built a global movement, dedicating her life to protecting animals, ecosystems and inspiring future generations. She was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace and made a Dame of the British Empire. But beyond the accolades, she was a tireless advocate, traveling and teaching right up until the end.It was the ultimate honour to speak with her on this podcast. In her memory, I'm re-releasing that conversation today. This fascinating conversation takes us from her PhD findings on midwifery obedience to the creation of the internationally recognized Birth Satisfaction Scale now validated in 23 countries and counting. At the heart of this discussion lies a profound truth: hierarchical structures in healthcare often prevent midwives from providing truly woman-centered care despite their best intentions. Caroline describes how this realization led her to develop a practical tool that captures women's birth experiences in a user-friendly format suited to new mothers. This scale has become the international measurement tool of choice for assessing birth satisfaction.Particularly illuminating are the discoveries about cultural differences in birth satisfaction. The scale manifests as a three-factor structure in Western countries but a two-factor structure in East Asian nations—reflecting how cultural expectations around obedience and choice significantly shape women's birth experiences. This research has expanded to include partner perspectives through matched scales that measure how birth partners experience the same events. The conversation doesn't shy away from concerning trends in modern maternity care, including rising cesarean rates and the physiological implications of bypassing natural birth processes. "Oxytocin is the hormone of love," Caroline reminds us, highlighting what women may miss when natural birth processes are interrupted unnecessarily. She also addresses the challenges facing midwifery today, from retention issues to the need for expanded scope of practice.Whether you're a midwife, researcher, expectant parent, or simply interested in how birth culture affects families, this episode offers profound insights into how measuring birth satisfaction can transform maternity care globally. Nick Cohen and historian James Hawes discuss wide range of political topics, focusing primarily on British politics, Brexit, and the rise of right-wing populism. Discussions included the historical context and current state of the Conservative Party, the challenges faced by Labour and the SNP, and the potential long-term implications of demographic changes on political landscapes. James Hawes argues that only liberal populists can counter the threat posed by Nigel Farage and Reform.Brexit's Long-Term Consequences and FailuresJames and Nick discusses the long-term implications and failures of Brexit, highlighting how Farage and other Brexit advocates had been promoting the idea for decades. Both criticise the lack of accountability and the continued influence of Brexit supporters despite the project's evident failures. James expressed optimism for a pro-remain populist leader to challenge Brexit advocates directly, rather than relying on complex economic arguments. He also shared a conversation with a top UK insider predicting the UK's collapse by 2029 due to Keir Starmer's inability to address the mess left by the Tories & BrexitThe Tory Party pickleJames & Nick discuss the historical and current dire state of the Conservative Party, highlighting its long history of populism and sectarianism. They argue that the party's true nature is being revealed through its alignment with Farage and its anti-migrant stance, which James compares to 19th-century Tory behaviour.Farage's Rise and threat to the UKThe discussion focuses on British politics, particularly Farage's rise and the potential for a shift towards far-right governance. James argues that Farage success in England will re-energise the SNP & inevitably speed up the UK's break-up. Both express concern about the working-class appeal of Farage's populism and discuss the perception of left-wing politicians as communists by some conservatives.Demographic Shifts and Political ImplicationsThe discussion focused on demographic challenges and political implications, with Nick and James exploring how an aging population and ironically more financially secure voters are more likely to vote for Farage and his brand of nut-job populist extremism, while younger generations face difficulties accessing housing and other opportunities. James argues that a more liberal -leftist brand of populism - with policies such as I.D. cards and German-like tests for trades people - might help counter the poison and certain chaos of Farageism.Read all about it!James Hawes @jameshawes2 is a historian and author of a novel and books such as including The Shortest History of Germany and The Shortest History on EnglandNick Cohen's @NichCohen4 latest Substack column Writing from London on politics and culture from the UK and beyond. Peter shares two memorable mistakes from his career - one hilarious, one costly - that shaped him into the marketer he is today. The main story centres on a perfect storm of PPC disasters: while managing a multi-million dollar enterprise event management client, Peter's Dynamic Search Ads began targeting Christmas trivia content from the client's blog during the holiday season. This led to massive irrelevant traffic, zero qualified leads for over a month, and ultimately the loss of the client - despite Peter successfully fixing the issue using Google's data exclusion functionality.Key takeaways:1. Own Your Mistakes ImmediatelyTransparency and accountability are crucial when things go wrongClients respect honesty more than excuses or blame-shiftingThe person who made the mistake is often best positioned to prevent it from happening again2. The Telegraph has revealed that a family of six Palestinians seeking to flee Gaza has been granted the right to live in the UK using a scheme meant for Ukrainian refugees. The Home Office initially rejected their application, but a judge overruled the decision as it breached their rights under the ECHR.It is an immigration tribunal decision which comes hot on the heels of the Albanian criminal whose deportation was halted in part because of his son's distaste for foreign chicken nuggets.Kamal and Camilla ask whether this ruling will open the floodgates for mass migration, and pose the question - who is really in control of our borders, Parliament or the judiciary? They also reflect on Kemi Badenoch's performance at Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime, as the Tory leader took the chance to grill Keir Starmer on the decision to allow the Gazan family to settle here.Read: Court gives Gazans right to settle in UKThe best (and worst) Home Counties, ranked and ratedProducer: Lilian FawcettSenior Producer: John CadiganPlanning Editor: Venetia RaineyExecutive Producer: Louisa WellsSocial Media Producer: Rachel DuffyVideo Editor: Valerie BrowneEditor: Camilla TomineyOriginal music by Goss Studio Hosted on Acast. He discusses how the false self, shaped by our stories and experiences, often leads to suffering and disconnection from our true essence. By inviting listeners to embrace moments of stillness and awareness, Steven highlights the importance of recognizing the constant presence of our true self, which offers unconditional love and acceptance. Throughout the conversation, he shares personal anecdotes and insights on the journey of self-discovery, emphasizing that true peace and safety reside within us, waiting to be acknowledged. This episode encourages a deeper understanding of oneself and the liberation that comes from letting go of ego-driven narratives.Exploring the concept of the true self, Steven Webb guides listeners on a profound journey into understanding the essence that lies beneath the layers of ego and identity. The conversation begins with the recognition that traditional words often fail to capture the depth of this experience, as it transcends emotion and thought. Webb emphasizes the paradox of the true self being both always present yet elusive, often overshadowed by the narratives we create about ourselves. He contrasts the true self with the false self, defined by the stories and roles we adopt throughout our lives, such as being a podcast host, a city counselor, or simply Stephen. This dialogue encourages listeners to delve deeper into their consciousness, moving beyond the ego's limitations to experience a state of awareness that is tranquil, expansive, and free from desire.Webb's reflections also touch on the importance of experiencing this true self for those on a spiritual journey, particularly those who seek to alleviate suffering. He articulates that understanding the true self is crucial for realizing inner peace, as the ego often drives our pain and desires. By allowing oneself to simply be—free from the compulsion to act or react—listeners can uncover a profound sense of peace and acceptance. This state of awareness, described as non-focused yet all-encompassing, is likened to a moment of stillness where one becomes aware of everything without attachment to any particular thought or feeling. The episode culminates in a powerful poem that encapsulates these themes, inviting listeners to embrace the silence and stillness that exists beyond the chaos of the mind. The conversation is rich with insights and practical guidance for those looking to explore their inner landscape. Webb encourages a deep breath and a moment of presence, illustrating how this practice can lead to a transformative awareness. This episode not only serves as a philosophical exploration but also as a call to action for listeners to reconnect with their true selves, promoting a sense of peace that is always within reach. Ultimately, Steven Webb's contemplative approach provides a nurturing space for listeners to reflect on their identities, their desires, and the essence of who they truly are beneath the noise of everyday life.Takeaways: The true self is a place of awareness beyond our ego and narratives. Understanding the true self can lead to reduced suffering in our spiritual journey. The ego creates a story of who we think we are, but it's not our essence. True love is about feeling safe and accepted without judgment or...

What happens when you leave a situation that is holding you back and you start betting on yourself? Anything becomes possible in the case of today's guest, Vicki Anstey. After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her, this former advertising professional, turned fitness pioneer and award-winning entrepreneur, became (at age 41) one of the first ever women to participate in Channel 4's ‘SAS Who Dares Wins', reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, she and two other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her most recent endeavor was a five day race in one of the northernmost, remote parts of the world, The Arctic. She covered a distance of over 230km in temperatures of -35 degrees, carrying everything she needed to survive.Up next? She and a team of three other women (Four the Record) are tackling the World's Toughest Bike Race, the Race Across America (RAAM), covering 3,000 miles across 17 states in just 7 days. They are attempting to break the women's world record in this event. On paper, Vicki is an avid adventurer, but her biggest achievements are less about the adventures, and more about her self-discovery. In times of adversity and extreme difficulty, Vicki learned to tap into her self-reliance, trust, and emotional endurance.Today, Vicki shares her personal story with Sara, including:Her career changes and personal growth from advertising executive to entrepreneurHow she followed her gut instincts, which led to Vicki opening the first Barre studio in the UKThe personal and professional growth that stemmed from leaving her controlling relationshipHer transformation from “non-athlete” to extreme adventurerOvercoming her personal fears and adapting to challenges in all of her experiencesLessons learned from her personal and physical adversityHoning the skill of emotional endurance, which involves understanding, processing, and letting go of emotions, rather than just tolerating themDeveloping the muscles of self-reliance, mental toughness, and resilience, especially in times of turmoil and extreme personal difficulty What's next? Another World Record attempt at RAAM and how you can helpVicki's story is one of wild bravery and self-knowledge, but her true wisdom comes from her own internal journey and ability to understand her strengths, remain emotionally resilient, and overcome her fears.
