In his most experimental episode ever, Rob interviews pianist Finn Barnaby to answer commonly asked questions on the show - but with a twist. Instead of speaking his responses, Finn expresses himself solely through music compositions on his piano. What unfolds is a highly entertaining glimpse into Finn's creative mind and talent as a musician. From commenting on the state of affairs in the UK to sharing brutal life lessons, Rob and Finn also discuss all things music, including mastering an instrument, the role of AI, and the dilemma between creative expression and commercial viability that all artists face. Finn Reveals: Motivation is key to mastering a musical instrument - natural talent helps but drive matters more The importance of understanding music theory The opportunities AI presents for musicians Why word-of-mouth reputation matters Why the right teaching and guidance makes learning piano achievable Why improvisation skills separate human musicians from AI BEST MOMENTS “I'm a closet creative” "Motivation is all you need" "Word of mouth is very valuable" "I really appreciated simple music as an art form, you can sell to the masses and still keep your identity" "There's been some really interesting developments with music in AI. And I'm really curious to see If it can, or when, or what happens when it can improvise." "I'll be curious to see...if I climbed the success ladder. I'd be very curious to see where the no came in." "I teach lots and lots of people and the ones that succeed are the ones that are motivated." When you start to integrate diads into those lines you'll get some really spicy flavors that go great with the blues and really any other standard. In this lesson I'll show you the diads I like to use and how to start practicing them so that you can spice up your single note improvisation lines.
