After weeks of hustle, I'm finally in a phase where I can focus on practicing and enjoying music for the sheer joy of it. It's a refreshing change! But I know many of us feel the weight of expectations to always be productive. We think we should be working harder, promoting ourselves more, or achieving something grand. What if we allowed ourselves to explore different creative directions and passions? Our artistic journeys don't have to be linear. It's okay to embrace joy and creativity, even if it doesn't directly pay the bills right now. (As long as SOMETHING is paying the bills, let's be real!) So, the next time you find yourself feeling guilty for pursuing what makes you happy, remember: your artistry matters! I'd love to hear your thoughts! For nearly seventeen years, we've followed the ever-evolving journey of bassist Cheikh Ndoye, watching with admiration as his musical vision continues to deepen and expand. Each project has revealed a restless curiosity and a commitment to sound that resists easy categorization. When we last spoke in 2018, Ndoye was already hinting at new directions, and he hasn't slowed down since. In the years that followed, he's been quietly and intensely at work, culminating in a new album, Genetic Tones, a project that captures both his roots and his forward-looking approach to music.I recently had the great pleasure of listening to several rough tracks from the album, and, as always, I was both impressed and genuinely excited by what I heard. Genetic Tones feels like a bold and thoughtful statement, rich in texture and intention. Join me as Cheikh shares insights into the making of this upcoming release and reflects on the ways his musical language has continued to transform over the years. There are countless musicians mentioned in the “Epstein Files”; a dozen or so are bold-faced names. A whole lot more are not. Some of the mentions are innocuous, a few of the mentions are highly suspicious, and all of them require context, something painfully missing from the social discourse at the moment. Have no fear, though, we're giving it to you straight, from Jack White to Mick Jagger, and Jimmy Buffett, Elton John, and more—we make sense of the rockstars named in the Epstein Files. How much of who we are is shaped before we ever have a say? In this episode of Identified, Nabil Ayers sits down with musician Damon McMahon, formally Amen Dunes, to explore how family history, inherited trauma, and cultural identity shape who we become. Damon reflects on growing up between two very different worlds: his mother’s side of European Jewish Holocaust survival and his father’s working-class Irish American roots. He shares stories of how these legacies lived quietly in his family — sometimes spoken, often unspoken — and how they influenced his sense of self from an early age. The conversation moves through complicated family dynamics, childhood instability, and the ways creativity can act as a private space for processing what’s difficult to articulate. Damon talks candidly about how his music has long been a way of exploring identity, releasing emotion, and trying to understand the forces that shaped him. They also discuss how becoming a parent reshaped his understanding of family — not as something inherited, but something actively created.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After nearly a decade of touring and a record deal cycle already come and gone, Kiernan McMullan moved to Nashville 15 years ago to dig into the craft of songwriting, and began laying the foundations of a long and successful career in music. While spending every year on the road full time, Kiernan had released a plethora of music surrounding the heavy topics of love, life, loss, and the introspection that comes with a life on the road. He's toured with, and opened for, a laundry list of artists and bands, and has played all over the US, Ireland, and the UK for the past 20 years. Born in Hong Kong to an Irish father and Australian mother, his love of travel and culture is rooted deep within his music and soul. His music can be characterized by his intense attention to lyrical detail and a fluid, yet structured affinity for rhythm found in his guitar playing, singing, and writing. Kiernan is a raw and honest wordsmith and captivating storyteller and songwriter. He can be found in Nashville running the Pindrop Songwriter Series and backing up other artists and bands when he's not on the road.www.kiernanmcmullan.comwww.instagram.com/kiernanmcmullanwww.youtube.com/kiernanmcmullanmusicTheme song: “Hollywood Faded' by Luna Halo@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

This week on the podcast is part two of our interview with Weston Dombroski. He's the Director of Legal Services at Lawyers for the Creative Arts in Chicago, where he works directly with artists and creative organizations navigating contracts, intellectual property, and organizational structure. Before that, he developed programs at lawyers-for-the-arts nonprofits, worked on legal teams at platforms such as Patreon and Discord, and helped found artist-run music co-ops. Weston has helped artists operate as sole proprietors, LLCs, nonprofits, cooperatives, and platform-based businesses--and he's seen how those choices play out over time.
