Why being true to yourself enables you to show up better for others. From the way you communicate, to the way you build your life and career, Graham Weaver, MBA '99, says it's about “giving yourself permission to fully be yourself. You can never go wrong when you're saying your truth.”Weaver is a lecturer in management, a GSB alum, and the founder and a partner of Alpine Investors. He stresses the importance of direct communication, highlighting how avoiding it can lead to wasted time, energy, and even financial losses. Reflecting on his own experiences in private equity, Weaver admits to struggling with being conflict-averse and not speaking his truth directly, which resulted in getting into bad deals and big losses for his company. “People think that by being indirect, they're being kind, but all they're doing is creating confusion,” he says. “Clarity is compassionate. Even if it's not what they want to hear, the more direct and clear you can be, the more compassionate that is for the other person.”In this Rethinks episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Weaver and host Matt Abrahams explore how being true to oneself not only fosters personal fulfillment but also enables us to show up better for others. Authenticity and self-belief lay the foundation for effective communication, leadership, and ultimately, success.Episode Reference Links:Graham WeaverConnect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (03:56) - Direct Communication & Limiting Beliefs (07:06) - The Internal Game (08:11) - An Asymmetrical Life (13:23) - Taylor Swift & Grit (16:17) - Pursuing Enlightenment (20:31) - The Final Three Questions (27:28) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. Episode 193: Ginger Gonzaga Interview This is the After Show for Yellow, featuring Andrew's conversation with writer and actor Ginger Gonzaga. Many listeners know Ginger from her roles in Marvel's She-Hulk, CBS's True Lies, Showtime's Kidding, I'm Dying Up Here, HBO's Togetherness, and Room 104. But in this episode, the spotlight shifts to her as a creator as well as a performer. Andrew and Ginger talk about coming up in the heavily male improv scene of the early 2000s, the delicate (and sometimes not-so-delicate) politics of improvising in auditions and on set, and how her background in high school speech and debate shaped her confidence as a storyteller. She also shares a wild story about pitching a show centered on mental health at a time when that topic wasn't exactly trending in development meetings or even in the national conversation. It's candid, funny, and full of insight about carving out space as a performer and writer. Most of all, it makes clear just how much Yellow means to her.

Send a textIt's the trinity of power this week. You guessed it, Beaveman, Swan, and JD bring the idiocy and the fun this week. Swan starts us off with, "This Weeks POS," as the trial of extended family/family annihilator Paul Caneiro comes to an end. He definitely qualifies as a POS. Hope he gets fitted with a sundress. She then transitions to a story about a local Grand Rapids, Michigan man who also annihilated his family. WTF, another POS. The Dark Lord of Browntown introduces some interesting theories about time that completely fries the Beaveman's brain. Is it plausible? That's for you to contemplate. The Beaveman brings it on ,"Not so Grand Rounds," with a discussion about Nipah virus. Gotta love the fruit bat, just don't love it that way you weirdo. And of course, the Swan ends the show with, "Dumb Jokes with the Swan." Is she actually getting better? You gotta give her credit, she is telling jokes to Beaveman and JD who just have to make idiot comments the entire time. Thank you to all of our listeners throughout the world! We love you! How to turn complexity into connection through clear communication.Communication in high-stakes moments isn't about saying more — it's about connecting better. For Jonathan Berek and Phil Polakoff, the most effective communicators don't rely on jargon or performance. They rely on empathy, listening, and stories that resonate. Both longtime Stanford Medicine leaders, Berek and Polakoff have spent their careers translating complex, emotional, and often urgent health issues for patients, colleagues, and the public. And they've learned that the message only lands when it's delivered at the right level, with the right intention. “Know your audience,” Berek says, describing the importance of “leveling” — communicating in language that meets people where they are, without talking down or over their heads. For both Berek and Polakoff, listening is the foundation. “The two most important skills in communication are empathy and listening,” Berek explains — not as soft skills, but as the core mechanics of trust. Polakoff agrees, pushing for directness and clarity: “I like a yes or a no. I don't like ambivalence or ambiguity.” And when it comes to being memorable, he's relentless about simplicity: “Think bold, start small.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Berek and Polakoff join host Matt Abrahams to examine what great communicators actually do: prepare deeply, speak concisely, listen with intention, and use storytelling to bring others along. Because as Berek puts it, “People feel the emotion when they see a story,” and emotion — paired with clarity — is what turns information into impact.Episode Reference Links:Phil PolakoffJonathan BerekConnect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:49) - Raising Awareness For Women's Cancer (03:46) - Redefining Health Beyond Disease (05:08) - Why Storytelling is Essential (07:08) - What Makes a Story Memorable (08:45) - Advice for Better Communication (09:46) - Making Complex Ideas Accessible (10:34) - Speaking at Your Audience's Level (11:57) - Listening & Empathy (12:39) - Improving Communication with Improv (14:08) - Communication for Collective Change (16:47) - Mentorship & The Big Picture (17:58) - The Final Three Questions (21:48) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.
