In 2014, my book You've Gotta Connect, which gives teachers tools to forge strong relationships with students, was published. I promote that teachers be approachable and then inject some enjoyment into their courses. This hack will succeed on both counts! On a recent commute to school, I came up with the hairbrained scheme of pulling my students into one of my ridiculous weekend body weight workout challenges. In order that we could all keep tabs on one another, we utilized Voxer...the 21st Century walkie-talkie.This program will tell the story of this AMAZING classroom adventure through the stories of two remarkable high school seniors...Abigail Myers and Mason Wright. Please give a listen and give a weekend challenge, of some sort of activity it certainly doesn't have to be physical, a try.

Teacher and student engagement expert Jim Sturtevant joins Mark Barnes in a discussion about the concept of the avatar -- no, not the movie. Sturtevant, author of You've Gotta Connect and Hacking Engagement, explains the power of the avatar for engaging kids and helping teachers and parents learn all they can about their most important target audience. Sturtevant details how he gets kids to open up about themselves with a simple online survey and then uses this information to discover the student avatar and help kids expand this metacognitive process outside of the classroom, into the real world. This is How to Find Your Avatar.

How important is the relationship you build with your students, and how can you make that relationship better? James Sturtevant, author of the book You've Gotta Connect, joins me to talk about why the teacher-student relationship is more significant to student learning than even socioeconomic status, the specific things teachers can do to build a strong, trusting relationship with students, and why sarcasm will always bite you in the butt. A must-listen for teachers interested in improving classroom management.
