Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesAs has become par for the course these last few weeks, Marvel Studios released the third Avengers: Doomsday trailer, which focuses on the X-Men, Tuesday morning after an exclusive week run attached to theatrical showings of Avatar Fire and Ash. Sebastian Stan is in talks to join The Batman Part II opposite Robert Pattinson and Scarlett Johansson, making him the second Marvel Cinematic Universe alum to jump to Matt Reeves' Gotham. The Oscar-nominated Apprentice star, best known for playing Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier in multiple Marvel films, would join returning cast members Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis ahead of spring production for an October 2027 release.Avatar: Fire and Ash crossed the 1 billion dollar mark at the global box office after 18 days in theaters, led by 40 million dollars domestically in its third weekend for a total of 306 million dollars and 777.1 million dollars internationally, making it Disney's third billion-dollar release of 2025. Meanwhile, Netflix's Stranger Things series finale generated between 25 to 28 million dollars from a limited two-day theatrical run across 600 theaters on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, with exhibitors selling concession vouchers rather than traditional tickets and keeping all revenue themselves as an olive branch between the streamer and theaters. Simu Liu has publicly endorsed his Copenhagen Test co-star Melissa Barrera to play Wonder Woman in James Gunn's DC Universe, praising her stunt training as Wonder Woman-esque and calling her a total badass who puts in the work. DC Studios boss James Gunn confirmed in July that Wonder Woman has not been cast yet and won't be discussed until the script is finished, with Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira tapped to write the new Wonder Woman film.Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another dominated the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night, winning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, while Timothée Chalamet won Best Actor for Marty Supreme and Jessie Buckley took Best Actress for Hamnet. Cameron has indicated he may scale back his hands-on involvement with future Avatar films to pursue other projects, potentially delegating more directorial duties to second unit directors or another filmmaker while remaining as producer.Paramount+ has renewed Mayor of Kingstown for a fifth and final season consisting of eight episodes, down from the usual ten episodes per season. The Taylor Sheridan crime drama starring Jeremy Renner and Edie Falco will conclude after its upcoming season, which follows the bloody Season 4 finale that aired in December 2025.Amazon Prime Video has announced the cast for its Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, with Sigourney Weaver joining as Evelyn Wallis, a mysterious woman seeking to exploit Lara's talents, and Jason Isaacs as Atlas DeMornay, Lara's uncle. What if you could create 8 long-form videos a day and over 100 pieces of content daily with just a few minutes of your own time? That's not a hypothetical — it's exactly what my guest, Julian Goldie, is doing using AI, systems, and some pretty bold experimentation. In this episode, we dig deep into AI avatars, content systems, SEO in the age of ChatGPT, and what authenticity even means anymore. I'll be honest — I have mixed feelings about some of this. But Julian brings a thoughtful, transparent approach that made me seriously rethink how AI might fit into a modern course business. Whether you're excited, skeptical, or somewhere in between, this conversation will definitely stretch how you think about content, scale, and leverage. Luke and Andrew both saw Marty Supreme over the holidays. They share their feelings on the movie and how it fits into the current movie theater moment. They also talk about how the greatest dart players in the world have to deal with wasps during their tournaments.
This week, Julia and Steve welcome guest host Sam Adams to deconstruct the aggravating, yet strangely charming, table tennis phenom on the make that is Marty Supreme. Played with “BDE off-the-charts” (Steve's words) by Timothée Chalamet, the unceasingly shameless hustler may just be an avatar for our age. Speaking of avatars, we can't avoid discussing Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest installment of James Cameron's immersive mega-franchise. Once again, the big blue folks peopling Pandora drew boku bucks at the box office… but do the Avatar films have any “cultural impact”? And what does “cultural impact” even mean? New Yorker staff writer Michael Schulman steps into the cultural cage match to debate this long-simmering internet argument. On this week's bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, the hosts take up a listener question about “cultural bran muffins,” the bits of culture you know would be good for you if only you could get them down. The hosts confess their bran secrets. Endorsements Steve: The essay "Two Pins and a Lollipop" about Judy Garland by Bee Wilson in the London Review of Books. Sam: The album Penthouse by the band Luna, particularly the song "Chinatown." Julia: Slate's beloved annual tradition Movie Club which for its 2025 edition gathers film critics Bilge Ebiri, Alison Wilmore, Justin Chang, and our very own Dana Stevens for a rollicking exchange about the year in film. --- Email us your thoughts at culturefest@slate.com. Do This, NOT That: Marketing Tips with Jay Schwedelson l Presented By Marigold
Social media caps for teens, AI-written subject lines, and the fact that people now search TikTok like Google all collide in this week's chaos as Jay Schwedelson riffs on what actually matters for marketers right now. You will pick up a tiny email tweak that can lift opens, a smarter way to write social posts for search, and a frankly unhinged dose of pop culture takes from Avatar 3 to the return of My Strange Addiction.ㅤBest Moments:(00:34) Virginia limits social media scrolling for users under 16 to 60 minutes a day and Jay wonders how platforms, parents, and free speech lawsuits will actually shape what happens next.(02:04) Jay shares new World Data Research results showing that all lowercase email subject lines can outperform polished AI title-cased subject lines and lift open rates by around 14 percent.(03:30) Between new Forbes and eMarketer stats, Jay breaks down why social platforms are becoming the primary search engine and why captions, transcripts, and on-screen text now need to be written like search hooks, not clever throwaways.(05:19) Jay cannot get over Avatar 3 passing a billion dollars at the box office when he does not know a single human who admits to seeing it.(06:29) The return of My Strange Addiction sends Jay into a horrified recap of car romances, Eiffel Tower marriages, and drywall eating that makes him question both humanity and his own viewing choices.ㅤCheck out Jay's YOUTUBE Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@schwedelsonCheck out Jay's TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@schwedelsonCheck Out Jay's INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/jayschwedelson/
The saga of The Sully Clan and their adventures on the far off planet of Pandora continues with this third entry in Oscar-winning director James Cameron's ongoing franchise which started in 2009 with Avatar....but do we still care? :p Well according to recent box office returns, we certainly do and much of that might due to the continued spectacle of seeing these characters fly and swim and now fight fire on-screen. The fire apparently comes from a new threat who's the leader of an ash tribe named Varang (Oona Chaplin) and as she starts to align with Colonel Quarytch (Stephen Lang, returning from the previous two films), that threat only seems to escalate. And stuck in the middle of this conflict is young human Spider (Jack Champion) who is still loyal to his adopted family of the Sully's but might now also present a new threat to them and the future existence of the Navi on this planet. Once again leading this sci-fi epic are Sam Worthington as Jake and now Oscar-winner Zoe Saldana as Netyri, along with several other returning cast members including Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis. Let's find out if Big Jim can pull it off again and if the quality of the story matches the spectacle.....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Kelsi and Trey discuss Avatar: Fire and Ash — a visually stunning, emotionally manipulative, and politically confused entry in James Cameron's blockbuster franchise. They break down why the film's spectacle still works, how its treatment of colonialism and “good settler” fantasy becomes increasingly muddled, and why the story isn't actually about the Fire and Ash people at all. Along the way, they unpack the fandom, the franchise's strange cultural footprint, and where Avatar might be headed next. Welcome to a special holiday edition of Born to Watch as we kick off 2026 with our first episode of the year, diving headfirst into James Cameron's latest visual behemoth, Avatar: Fire and Ash. Released during the peak Christmas blockbuster window, this third chapter continues Cameron's decades-long obsession with Pandora, spectacle, and pushing cinematic technology to its absolute limits. In this Avatar Fire and Ash Review, Whitey and Damo reunite for what has now become a strange but sacred tradition, reviewing each Avatar film together as it hits cinemas. Sixteen years after the original Avatar changed blockbuster filmmaking forever, Fire and Ash arrives with enormous expectations, a massive runtime, and the promise of something darker, angrier, and more volatile than anything we've seen on Pandora before.Picking up shortly after the events of The Way of Water, the Sully family are still dealing with grief, fractured relationships, and the relentless pursuit of humanity's returning forces. This time, however, the danger doesn't just come from sky people and recombinants. We're introduced to the Ash People, a fire-driven Na'vi tribe led by the ferocious and unforgettable Varang. Their volcanic environment, brutal ideology, and complete rejection of Eywa mark the franchise's most radical departure to date.Visually, Fire and Ash is everything you expect from Cameron. The world-building is astonishing, with volcanic landscapes, new creatures, and large-scale action sequences that exist purely to remind you why Avatar films demand the biggest screen possible. Whether it's underwater chaos, airborne combat, or creatures that feel ripped straight from Cameron's sketchbooks, the film is an undeniable technical achievement. But Born to Watch isn't here to admire pretty pixels. Whitey and Damo dig into the film's biggest talking points, including the now-familiar Avatar formula, the film's staggering three-hour-plus runtime, and whether this chapter actually moves the story forward or simply spins its wheels. Is this Avatar 3, or Avatar 2.5? Does the franchise still have emotional weight, or has it become a tech demo in search of a story? There's plenty of discussion around returning villain Quaritch, whose moral tug-of-war continues to be one of the franchise's more compelling arcs, and Spider's expanding role as the human caught between two worlds. The episode also tackles the darker tone of Fire and Ash, its surprisingly violent moments, and the question of whether Cameron is setting up a satisfying endgame or stretching Pandora beyond breaking point. As always, the episode starts spoiler-light before diving fully into spoilers, dissecting character arcs, repetitive beats, and the growing sense that Avatar may be more about visual wonder than narrative payoff. There's praise where it's due, criticism where it's earned, and a lot of laughs along the way.If you loved the first two Avatar films, this one will feel familiar, immersive, and impressive. If you've ever questioned where this franchise is heading, Fire and Ash may give you just as many questions as answers.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Avatar still cinema's ultimate big-screen spectacle? Is this chapter bold evolution or safe repetition? Can James Cameron realistically deliver two more Avatar films?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or at BornToWatch.com.au#AvatarFireAndAshReview #BornToWatch #Avatar2025 #JamesCameron #MoviePodcast #FilmReview #BlockbusterCinema #SciFiMovies #IMAXExperience #Pandora
