Join your host, Kyler with a K, as she interviews people in the LGBTQIA community about their upbringing in different religions, backgrounds or households. How do they navigate faith now? What religion (or lack thereof) do they practice today? Whoever - Or WHATEVER, God is to you - We are here to remind you that you are loved, and you were created exactly the way you are for a reason! If you'd like to be interviewed for this podcast, please email: areyoutheregodpodcast@gmail.com
"Every difficult thing that we go through ends up being someone else's survival guide." Alex is a FTM transgender man who lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We have been friends for such a long time, and seeing him come into himself over the last several years has been a beautiful thing to witness as his "big sister" and friend. We've supported each other through so many changes, and there has been an incredible amount of healing in his life and in his family since he started his transition. Join us as he tells us all about it.
"For every single hardship that is yet to come, and for every single hardship that you have been through, there will always be one person who is in your corner." This conversation with Andrew about being openly gay and openly Christian is the reason why I started this podcast in the first place. Join us as we both tell you about our negative experiences in the Christian church as openly gay people, the ways that we have been able to overcome church trauma and find our identities with Jesus, and hear the heartwarming last words of acceptance from Andrew's mother before she passed away of breast cancer.
Stevie Burger is an openly gay (and PROUD) Jewish woman living in Portland, Oregon. She was very fortunate to have parents who supported her sexual orientation from the beginning, even though coming out in a Catholic school (as a Jewish person) was anything but easy! I really enjoyed sitting down with her and hearing the ways she loves herself, and the ways her family loves her too.
“I'm growing every single day to love myself a little bit more, and I think that eventually I'll love myself enough to say I'm tired of hiding even just a portion of who I am. If you can't love me for all of me, then that's on you. That's a choice you've made, and I don't feel sorry for it.” We're back, everyone! And what a great episode to celebrate this wonderful homecoming! Join myself and my friend T as they tell us about their traumatic Christian upbringing, and their coming out story that brought them unfortunate and negative consequences. If you would like to be interviewed for this podcast, please email "areyoutheregodpodcast@gmail.com" - I always need more people willing to share their stories!
Jayce and I had a great conversation about what it's like to be transgender in a community where it's looked down on, and about the unconditional love of Jesus. Listen as he tells us about his upbringing in a strict evangelical church, discovering that he didn't identify with the body he was born in, saving up for top surgery, and learning how to live authentically while also loving God.
Join myself and Alexandra Barr (creator and host of The Barr Above Podcast) in Manhattan, NY! She tells us all about her upbringing in the Episcopalian denomination of Christianity, her sobriety, and how she was encouraged to come out as bisexual after getting sober five years ago.
Join myself and certified "Queer Guide" Hannah Strenger from Minnesota as we discuss her upbringing in the Catholic and Lutheran churches, totaling her car during a moment of clarity, and coming to terms with her sexuality after college.
Episode 7 is short and sweet with Tori Belke from Geneva, Ohio. Listen as she tells us about growing up in the Church of the Nazarene and coming out to her youth pastor at age 11, followed by a suicide attempt that changed her entire outlook on life -- and on being completely herself with zero guilt or shame.
Join myself and Elizabeth as we discuss our common ground in sobriety, and as she tells her story about growing up in the Lutheran faith. This one will make you laugh!
Episode 5 is here! Get to know Caitlin as she tells us about her recent pandemic proposal to her girlfriend, being outed by faculty at the Seventh-day Adventist school she attended as a teenager, running away from home, and the death of a family member bringing her loved ones back together again.
Probably the best episode yet! Courtney Boy was raised as a Mennonite, but broke away from the religion as a whole when she came out of the closet as a teenager. Listen as she tells us about the Mennonite practices she was raised with, becoming true to herself as a lesbian, and co-parenting her 9 year old daughter with her female partner and her ex-husband.
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Join myself and Kapua Silva from Oahu, Hawaii as she tells us about the mental and religious abuse she endured when her family found out she was a lesbian, and how they finally accepted it almost 20 years later.
"You should give yourself the unconditional love that the Bible says we deserve and we should give everyone else. You aren't excused from that." Talking Jesus with another out and proud lesbian was so beautiful and refreshing. In episode two, we talk about what the Bible ACTUALLY says about homosexuality, how our parents have grown, and how being gay isn't like choosing your favorite flavor of ice cream.
"We are a spectrum of people, and the spectrum is endless." Join myself and Alex Schuster from Tallahassee, Florida for the first episode of, "Are You There, God? It's Me, I'm Queer."
How many people in the LGBTQIA community have turned their heads up towards the sky to ask this question, only to feel it go unanswered? My name is Kyler with a “K”. And this idea was birthed from my own experiences coming out as a lesbian in a religious community that told me I couldn't have both. This is a podcast unlike any others. Here, you will listen to people in the LGBTQIA community from ALL over the world tell their stories about growing up in different religions, different households, and different backgrounds. My goal is to shed light on how negative religious influence can be on people of our community, and what we can do better. But I can't do it alone! Whoever - Or WHATEVER, God is to you - We are here to remind you that you are loved, and you were created exactly the way you are for a reason. Stay tuned for, “Are you there, God? It's me, I'm queer,” and like and subscribe to make sure you never miss an episode!
