Your work is done. Sometimes we find ourselves in situation like Simeon when our work is done and we can go home. That gives tremendous relief but we must first figure out what are our goals. What do we care about? How are we working towards that? When do we have leave to let go? That can be a true blessing of the Lord. A sermon on Luke 2:22-40 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Those moments of transcendence In life we have those rare moments when we see a great light and God truly comes into our lives. What characterizes those moments? What do they look like and how do we make them more often? The value of silence and exploring God's presence with intentionality. A sermon on Isaiah 9:2-7 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. How God's presence changes us Mary was an insignificant woman. She was told that God herself was with her. How does it change the perspective on your life when you know God is with you? Are you prepared for the good news of the incarnation? What if you are a child of God with God's seed within you? Can you put aside the shame of life to find yourself to be worthy? A sermon on Luke 1:26-38 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on December 20, 2020 www.fcc-houston.org/ New to First Congregational? Have the humility to look for Jesus The world so often looks for money, success, power, achievement. What would it mean to look for Jesus? Imagine the humility of saying, "I'm not the one. He/she is coming after me." Our lives have only limited impact. Can we see what we do as part of God's larger whole? Can we appreciate what it means that God becomes incarnate and makes things holy, not our sucesses? A sermon on John 1:6-8, 19-28 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on December 13, 2020 www.fcc-houston.org/ New to First Congregational? Please feel free to reach out to Rev. Preparing for God's presence So often we are so caught up in the busyness of life that we forget to prepare for special times. What does it mean to mark out certain times as holy, sacred? Can we use Advent to slow down, appreciate our friends and loved ones, and truly prepare for the advent of Christ at Christmas? A sermon on Mark 1:1-8 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. To live in the moment is to live for God We are constantly living in a world where we look to the future or the past. What does it mean to make the present the true present? How can we relish the good things of life during this time? One lesson from this passage is the unknown future and how that forces us to look at the now. A sermon on Mark 13:24-37 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on November 29, 2020 www.fcc-houston.org/ New to First Congregational? Please feel free to reach out to Rev. To find the best in crazy people The Pilgrims made decisions that we would never make. They left everything for their faith. That degree of self righteousness has its pitfalls, for sure. How do we honor the pilgrim's legacy by being willing to take risks for God in the congregation? What does boldness look like today? A sermon on Psalm 65 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Vigilance for Christians What does it mean to be vigiliant as a Christian in the 21st Century? This is particularly true when you are a panentheist. We must set aside time regularly for God. Prayer time and time for silence and repair. We should allow ourselves time for true rest if we want to be spiritual people. A sermon on Matthew 25:1-13 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Heaven is spiritual union with God. According to Jesus and Paul, the after life is not like this life. We don't "switch horses and keep on riding." The next life is about union with God. Our created bodies make that union only partial. Once we die, our bodies are transformed and able to exist in the presence of absolute love. A sermon on Luke 20:27-40 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. The aim of the Christian life is flourishing. The aim of Christianity is not self-inflicted pain or suffering. It is about living a flourishing life with God. Christians believe that is what brings true happiness and joy. It does not mean always being free from pain or suffering, which would be impossible. But it does mean finding meaning and joy in life's moments and in service to others. A sermon on John 10:1-10 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Following Jesus means grace and inclusion. Jesus rebelled against the religious conventions of his day. He ignored society's judgments of others and saw people as they were and showed grace, especially to the marginalized. If we are to follow Jesus, we need the courage to do the same. A sermon on Mark 2:13-28 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on October 25, 2020 www.fcc-houston.org/
Sex is not a sin. God created us as fundamentally good and our sexual lives are a part of that. The longstanding shame over sex in the Christian tradition is misplaced and has to be reframed for the faith to be relevant in the 21st century. A sermon on Romans 13:8-10 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on October 18, 2020 www.fcc-houston.org/
Christianity in the 21st Century: Panentheism God is in everything and everyone. Process theologians pioneered the concept of panentheism, the notion that God is in everything and everyone. God is the creative force that gives life order and is omnipresent. God is not omnipotent in the classic sense of the word and does not have a will in the sense that humans do. God, instead, is love. A sermon on Psalm 104:1-30 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on October 11, 2020 https://www.fcc-houston.org/
Christianity in the 21st Century: Man as Sinner We must acknowledge our brokenness. The first step of faith is to acknowledge our own brokenness. Humans fall short of the best we know we can be. We are all people who carry deep wounds. Those wounds so often affect how we relate to the world. When we acknowledge our brokenness, it opens us up to grace in our lives and God's life-giving presence. A sermon on Psalm 130 delivered by Rev. Jonathan C. Page at First Congregational Church of Houston on October 04, 2020. https://www.fcc-houston.org/
