And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable… ~Luke 15:1-3 I am thrilled to welcome Amy Webb to the pulpit of First Congregational Church this Sunday. Amy is a faithful member of our church who has often offered beautiful music for our worship services. She is also part of the committee that coordinates our WISE (welcoming, inclusive, supportive, engaged) ministry that focuses on including those facing mental health challenges in our ministries. Amy recently earned her Master of Divinity degree from Boston University School of Theology and is a Member in Discernment with the Central CT Association of the Southern New England Conference. Most Americans go to church expecting to hear about salvation, morality and scripture. They don't anticipate hardball political endorsements. But some churches thrive on delivering politics from the pulpit. Sure, pastors are citizens, too. And so in other venues, such as op-eds, blogs, books, and other places of influence, a pastor may speak his mind. Even so, he must jealously guard that influence and always speak winsomely. As a gospel minister, he shouldn't make politics more important than his pastoral duties. The tax code prevents religious institutions from serving as political machines, a concept in keeping with the separation of church and state our founding fathers envisioned. Pastors cannot make declarations to favor or oppose any candidate from the pulpit. They cannot take money from the collection plate and give it to support a candidate. And if they want to participate in any partisan activity in their personal capacity, they must make sure it is done in a manner indicating it is separate from their religious institution. The Rev. Dr. Timothy C. Ahrens began his ministry as Senior Minister of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in downtown Columbus on January 23, 2000. A church known for its witness to social justice since its birth as an abolitionist congregation in 1852, Rev. Ahrens is the fifth consecutive senior minister from Yale Divinity School and is a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ. Rev. Ahrens is a 1980 graduate of Macalester College with a double major in Religious Studies and Political Science. Since January 2000, under his leadership, First Church has doubled in membership during an era when seven downtown churches have closed their doors. Rev. Ahrens earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary in May 2015. His thesis was entitled: “Young and Growing Stronger: Creating a Model of 21st Century Prophetic Witness Leaders with a New Generation.” He is currently working on two books.

Recently, Kelsey had the opportunity to preach at First Congregational Church of Bellingham and when the Pastor told her what the scripture would be, she almost backed out.It was the story of Passover (Exodus 12 and 13), when Moses leads his people out of slavery into freedom. It's a powerful, poignant story, but it also includes the gruesome and troubling 10th plague to hit Egypt: the killing of all the first-born children and animals. While she doesn't focus primarily on that aspect of the story, Kelsey offers a perspective from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks that changed how she understood God's actions. The bulk of the sermon, shared in today's episode, focuses on how God is with us, preparing us for the difficult journeys we face in life - often with very specific (and loving) instructions. You can read more of Kelsey's thoughts on the 10th plague in Exodus 12 here. Connect with us!Donate today and support our work!Sign up to receive a little Gospel in your inbox every Monday Morning with our weekly devotional.Join our FREE bookclubCheck out our website for various resources - including devotionals, journaling prompts, and even curriculumGet some Lady Preacher Podcast swag!Connect with us on Instagram and Facebook

Discernment is the process of gaining clarity on finding direction for the next step of our journey.   SHOW NOTES Last year Steve and Gwen went through a period of repositioning: changes were on the horizon but any clarity about what to do next was clouded by the realization that they were not on the same page. They reached out to a trusted Spiritual Director for help and the result was what they called a “Discernment Retreat.”  They needed clarity. They needed discernment. Today's podcast is a discussion between Steve and the Spiritual Director they called on for help, Martie McMane. A retired minister, artist, and spiritual director, Martie used a collage process that helped Steve & Gwen in making those crucial, life decisions. Today they dive deep into the process.
