Hey Friends, What if your clutter isn't evidence of failure — but evidence of how much you've been carrying? In this episode, we kick off Day One of the January Reset by dismantling the pressure that comes with a new year and offering a different way to begin. Instead of forcing goals or pushing through, we slow down, regulate the nervous system, and set an intention that's grounded in the body — not willpower. You'll learn why feeling "behind" isn't a motivation problem, how clutter often reflects seasons of grief, caregiving, transition, and survival, and why change doesn't stick unless your nervous system feels safe enough to sustain it. Intention Setting: This isn't about goals. It's about choosing who you want to be. Name what you want. (Less chaos, more ease, a new job, deeper connection.) Ask what's underneath that desire. How do you actually want to feel? (Calm, safety, confidence, openness.) Bring that feeling into your body. Ground your feet. Slow your breath. Soften your shoulders. Feel gravity. Write one sentence for today. "Today, I choose calm by staying grounded in my body." We also talk about what real commitment looks like — and how choosing yourself doesn't require intensity, just consistency. If you want support decluttering your entire home in a calm, sustainable way, the year-long Declutter Your Chaos program is open during the January trial period. You can find all the details at https://declutteryourchaos.com/ If this episode helped you, please leave a review or share it with someone who needs it. Here's to a calmer, more supported 2026! As we move into a new year and face another midterm election cycle, it's easy to feel discouraged—but that's not the full story. In today's episode, Todd Huff walks through several underreported developments that suggest the political landscape is shifting in meaningful ways. From the declining effectiveness of government shutdown threats, to the dissolution of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to major fraud exposure in Minnesota daycare programs, real accountability is finally emerging. Todd explains why these moments matter, why they signal a more informed electorate, and why conservatives should be cautiously optimistic—without ever declaring victory. This fight for liberty never ends, but there are clear signs that the momentum is changing. Realism, vigilance, and perspective are the keys moving forward.
In this short podcast, Bryan answers a question submitted to HVAC School by an aspiring licensed architect who wanted to learn more about the many different types of HVAC systems. The three main buckets of HVAC systems are air-to-air, water-source, and air-to-water. Air-to-air systems move air around to remove heat from one space, and that heat is rejected to the air somewhere else. Water-source systems move water around the building and use water as the heat rejection medium. Air-water hybrid systems condition the load with water and may use air for ventilation; water or air may be used as the rejection medium. Systems may be direct-exchange (DX) and may transfer heat directly to refrigerant, or they may flow the air or water over a coil with water or glycol, utilizing a secondary fluid. Systems may also have separate indoor and outdoor architecture (split systems), or all components may be rolled into a single box (package unit). Package units include window units, PTACs, and RTUs. When it comes to forced-air systems, constant air volume (CAV) systems maintain the same volume of airflow (though the temperatures will change). Variable air volume (VAV) systems use one stream of cold air in a main duct, and each zone has a VAV box that functions as a damper to control zones individually. Dual duct systems have one cold duct and one warm duct that run parallel to each other and mix at each zone. Packaged rooftop units (RTUs) are self-contained with ducts that run down into the space and are common in retail spaces. Air-to-water systems use fan coil units (FCUs) fed with chilled or hot water. Air moves locally inside the space, so there is less ductwork and good zone control, but there are many units to manage. Chillers make chilled water, and that water is pumped around the building and sent to individual air handler units (AHUs). These are highly efficient and have large amounts of piping. They need mechanical rooms and dedicated personnel to maintain them. Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems are DX systems that are becoming more popular and consist of multiple indoor units with one or more outdoor units. Some of these can be used for heat recovery, meaning one space can be cooled while another is heated. Heat pump types include air-source, water-source, and ground-source. Air-source heat pumps absorb heat from the air via one unit and reject it via the other; the outdoor and indoor units can swap functions. Water-source heat pumps are common in commercial applications and have multiple heat pumps tied into a water loop that tries to stay within a given temperature range via boilers and cooling towers. Ground-source or geothermal heat pumps pick up heat from the earth's stable temperature and are highly efficient, but they have high installation costs. Passive systems come in all sorts of varieties and reduce the HVAC system's loads but don't replace HVAC systems in North America. Mechanical systems consist of straight-cool (air conditioner with electric heat), furnaces (gas, propane, or oil combustion), or heat pump (reversible air conditioners) systems. Throughout 2025, Chicago faced a barrage of attacks from President Donald Trump and other politicians painting the city as a murder-ridden hellscape needing federal — and even military — intervention. Yet as the city brought the year to a close this week, it reported its lowest number of murders in more than half a century, according to preliminary data. Quinn Myers dives into why. Reports of the flu are increasing statewide. Ground beef has been recalled over contamination concerns, and one of the states it was distributed to was Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Turnpike has once again upped its tolls. And a city has become one of the now several places that has partnered with a no-kill animal control service.

For 250 years, this country has been built by men and women willing to step up to the line—willing to walk on the dirt, stand on the ground, and do the work that begins at the bedrock. Long before headlines and soundbites, there was responsibility. There was stewardship. There was an understanding that what lies beneath our feet matters, because it supports everything above it—our communities, our economy, and our way of life.As we enter the first four weeks of January 2026, Blackline—in partnership with Better In Our Backyard—will be sharing a four-part series of real, honest conversations rooted in that foundation. Each week, we'll release an episode leading into the Better In Our Backyard Annual Dinner on January 15, centered on responsible industrial development, strong local economies, and the people who do the work that sustains modern life. The series unfolds in four parts: The Dirt. The Ground. The Bedrock. And The Backyard. These conversations are about more than industry—they're about responsibility. About developing resources the right way. About investing in local workforces, strengthening communities, and educating people on why domestic mining, manufacturing, and infrastructure matter. Better In Our Backyard exists to bring value to the companies, organizations, and men and women who walk on the dirt, stand on the ground, and build on the bedrock of this country—so families can thrive and communities can endure.Over the next four weeks, follow along—and stand alongside other like-minded men, women, and organizations who believe a stronger future is built locally, intentionally, and with care. If that resonates, you can learn more and register to attend the Better In Our Backyard Annual Dinner on January 15 through the link. Because a better economy, a better community, and a better future all start the same way—right here, in our backyard.--------------------------WHERE TO WATCH:Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/07rT0hFAsPAZYCUF4OMBB7 Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-line/id1722664848-------------------------FOLLOW JOSH:X: https://x.com/JoshuadmellottInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/JoshuadmellottLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshua-d-mellott-0b0525118/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCC11qG6HXWP7TmVMr_Sv7Vg--------------------------FOLLOW BLACKLINE: @blacklineltd Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blacklineltd?igsh=a2wwbzJ3Y3Jjd2o4Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100095504736514LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/blackline-ltd/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@blacklineLTDWebsite: https://www.blacklineltd.com/--------------------------EXPLORE THE PODCASTSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/07rT0hFAsPAZYCUF4OMBB7?si=0da16a8fb2574ca4Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-line/id1722664848

"The Ground Upon Which I Stand" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha on the topic of taking a close look at where we are, and beginning to make small changes in our lives that will incline us in the direction we want to move. After last week's Intention Setting Ceremony this was a way of recognizing where we are and how to get where we wish to be; how we implement the changes to see those intentions materialize. I hope you enjoy!https://bio.reverendgeorgebeecher.com

PART TWO OF DC residents speaking out about the impact of increased policing by federal agents, including ICE officers, since August 2025. Those presented here are among the 130 people who testified for nearly 12 hours on December 4th 2025 before the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee of the DC Council. The Trump administration ordered a multi-million dollar surge in policing and deployment of the National Guard, despite the district's 30-year low crime rate. That surge officially ended in September, but there are still more federal police openly collaborating with local police, leading to shootings and other violent encounters in DC neighborhoods. LAM SON 719 AND THE FAILURE OF VIETNAMIZATION Colleague Geoffrey Wawro. The 1971 invasion of Laos (Lam Son 719) exposed the failure of Vietnamization, as South Vietnamese troops were routed without USground support, proving they lacked the leadership and logistics to fight alone. By 1972, only massive American air power, reinstated by Nixon during the Easter Offensive, saved South Vietnam from collapse, while Nixonsimultaneously pursued détente with China and the USSR to isolate Hanoi. The relentless "Linebacker" bombing campaigns eventually forced North Vietnam back to the negotiating table, though the peace deal essentially replicated terms available years earlier. NUMBER 15

CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

I can't quite believe that yet another year of us going on Wise Walks together has come and gone. In our last episode, I invited you to reflect on your previous Word of the Year, and I've been doing that too. Looking back, I can see how my word, Co-create, supported me in ways I couldn't have fully anticipated at the time. Sometimes we choose a word with a clear sense of direction or intuition about what will help us feel more aligned and in our True Stride. When I think about why this practice matters to me, I always come back to the idea of choosing a word for the year not as something to achieve, but as something to lean and live into. A word that helps me stay grounded when things feel uncertain and reminds me of who I want to be when life gets messy. As this new year begins, I found myself slowing down and really asking what kind of support I need right now, not just externally, but from within. On today's Wise Walk, I invite you to explore what a Word of the Year might look like for you. I share the word that emerged for me after reflecting on the past several years and what it means to create the conditions for growth, even when life feels transitional. Together, we'll consider how a single word can act as a quiet compass, helping us stay aligned, rooted, and open to what wants to unfold next. As you reflect on where you've been, where you are now, and how do you want to show up? What word best captures that intention for you this year? Is there a word you want to embody more fully, whether it feels literal and clear or more like a feeling or essence that you're drawn toward? Do you give yourself permission to let one word, or perhaps a few words, or a mantra, gently guide you through the coming year? What word could serve as a navigational star for you, grounding and centering you when things feel rocky or out of alignment? Looking back over the past five years and the seasons that shaped you, what feels ready to carry you into what's next? What word might help you transform, open, or root yourself in ways that feel aligned with who you are becoming? Which areas of your life feel most important to focus on right now, whether physical, mental, spiritual, or relational? Can you choose one word to serve as a steady reminder of how far you've come and where you're headed next? And as you acknowledge the work you've already done, how can you honor your continued growth and unfold it with compassion and trust? I look forward to going on this epic adventure with you in the coming year and blooming in ways we can't even expect right now. Trusting that it will unfold naturally. As always, I would love to hear what you took away from today's episode. Feel free to reach out and share. Then tune in to next Thursday's Wise Walk for another conversation. Until then, happy, happy New Year. In this episode: [03:37] Upon reflection, the idea of opening myself up to further possibilities washed over me. For the last 5 years, I've been going inward and looking for words that would help me grow. [04:44] I give myself permission to choose again and wonder what the possibilities are if I open myself up. [05:38] There has been a tending to my inner self, so my outer self can show up the way it's meant to. Co-create supported me last year, and this year the word that popped up for me is bloom. [06:06] Bloom is tending your garden and appreciating nature's growth from the soil nourishing a seedling, to growing and flourishing. [07:01] I love that this word means that I'm going to put some roots down even in my transitional stage. [10:03] Another cool thing about the word of the year is that many others including striders like yourself are going on this journey with me. [11:03] Thank you so much for listening, and I look forward to going on this adventure with you in the coming year! Memorable Quotes: "Blooming isn't about pushing or proving. It's about creating the conditions that allow growth to happen." - Mary Tess "You don't have to know exactly what's coming next to trust that something meaningful is unfolding." - Mary Tess "A word for the year isn't something to chase. It's something to return to when you need grounding." - Mary Tess "Sometimes the most powerful growth happens quietly, beneath the surface, long before we see the bloom." - Mary Tess Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Heart Value Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram
Dr. Burke started working in health food stores while in college at the University of Michigan. In the late 70s and early 80s, he worked with industry pioneer Dr. Earl Mandel, eventually managing a chain of 170 stores. For 42 years, he hosted a national radio talk show focused on health. He now hosts the Honest Health with Jeffrey Burke podcast and serves as the Director of Education for Kokora Life, founded by Rick Scalzo. The Industry Evolution He credits his interest in natural medicine to his Ukrainian and Polish grandmother, who used to forage for mushrooms and dandelion tea and kept a perpetual pot of bone broth on the stove. This generational wisdom sparked a lifelong dedication to natural health that has spanned over four decades. Organic vs. Regenerative Farming Organic farming primarily focuses on what is not in or on the crop… no herbicides, GMOs, or synthetic chemicals. However, traditional organic farming still involves heavy tilling, which degrades soil over time. Regenerative farming follows organic methods but goes further by focusing on soil health and restoration. Key practices include no-till farming to prevent erosion, cover crops ensuring the ground is never "naked," bio-ferments that create a "probiotic" for the soil, biochar using burnt bamboo remnants, and increased worm populations that aerate the soil. Why Soil Health Matters Regenerative crops are often four to five times stronger than traditional crops. The transition at Rick Scalzo's farm resulted in a turmeric crop that was five times larger and significantly more potent. Burke notes that due to overtilling and chemical use, the planet may only have about 60 crops left. We've lost 40% of insect populations and 50% of bird populations. Regenerative food provides the mineral density the body craves, leading to better satiety. Health and Longevity Advice Shop the outer areas of grocery stores… avoid processed, chemical-laden foods in the middle. Real food has a short shelf life. Citing Blue Zones like Okinawa, Burke notes that the longest-living people eat a simple, consistent diet of 7 to 8 high-quality foods rather than a hyper-varied diet. When starting regenerative supplements, start with half the recommended dose because the potency is much higher. Watch the documentary "Kiss the Ground" to understand soil revitalization, and ask for regenerative products at your local health food store. In this podcast, you'll learn: The evolution of the natural products industry over four decades The state of the soil and agriculture today Why regenerative farming is the future of food and supplements EPISODE RESOURCES: Website Social Media: LinkedIn Instagram

On Day 3 of Closing the Year with Gratitude and Grace, we shift into GROUND—the practice of finding your footing before the new year arrives. You'll learn why grounding works—how slow, steady breathing supports your nervous system, quiets mental noise, and helps you feel safe enough to settle. Through a gentle shoreline story and an embodied guided meditation, you'll release the urge to "figure it all out" and instead reconnect with what's steady, true, and already within you. THE HORROR ON THE GROUND IN TOKYO Colleague James M. Scott. The raid began just after midnight, catching families asleep. The napalm bombs were designed to puncture roofs and spray fire inside homes, turning the wooden city into kindling. The resulting firestorm created a tidal wave of flame that moved across the city, blocked escape routes, and melted the glass of concrete buildings, killing those sheltering inside. Survivors, including a young girl named Shizuko Nishio, fled through an apocalyptic landscape. Photographer Koyo Ishikawa documented the event, describing the fire as a "surf wave" approaching from the ocean. NUMBER 6 1945 OKINAWA
