While cars burned in the streets and shops were fire bombed, people were stuck inside with little word on what would come next. There were claims of possible attacks on hotels, apartments and homes which luckily did not take place. Airports were closed. Now, a day later, air transportation is slowly restarting and busses are dipping their feet into running normally again. There is a calm on the streets as people begin to go outside and stock up on that which they could not get yesterday. There are massive lineups at the small family owned stores which were not targeted. Yet, most Oxxos and Kioskos are burnt shells. There is a lot of fear being spread by American medias and it needs to be said, things are a lot better, though yes, yesterday was hell for thousands of people unsure of how much this would escalate. The military has taken over the city from the cartels but this is likely only the beginning of something else. Perhaps not anything like what we have just seen here in Puerto Vallarta but it's unlikely the cartels are finished showing how they feel about their leader being killed. As far as we see right now however, the average person on the street is safe and bars and restaurants aim to open tonight. There’s a theme in today’s episode of holding the breath, which is something I’ve been doing about unrest and possible US military action in Iran. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie and Senators Tim Kaine and Rand Paul would call acts of war). Then there’s the way that our guest and friend Natalia Terfa describes holding her breath in Minneapolis. Even as Operation Metro Surge “winds down,” there are still agents and agitators. There is still fear and tension. There is damage left to repair after “it’s over,” and a sense that it’s not really over yet. We’re grateful to Natalia for her leadership on the ground and her willingness to discuss it with us today. We often talk about outside of politics as an exhale, and we hope it is today. In a mid-February 2026 discussion, executives Alex Black of Rio2 and Shane Williams of West Red Lake shared the operational realities facing newly producing mining companies in a favorable commodity price environment.Both executives emphasized the importance of slow, measured ramp-ups rather than rushing to full capacity. This approach allows proper development of operational systems, procedures, safety protocols, and team training alongside physical production increases. Rio2 targets 60,000 to 70,000 ounces in 2026 at its Fenix Gold Project in Chile, with expansion potential to 300,000 ounces annually pending water infrastructure development. West Red Lake sees a pathway to 150,000 ounces annually with relatively modest capital investment for mill expansion.The discussion highlighted significant operational challenges often underappreciated by retail investors.
