LAM SON 719 AND THE FAILURE OF VIETNAMIZATION Colleague Geoffrey Wawro. The 1971 invasion of Laos (Lam Son 719) exposed the failure of Vietnamization, as South Vietnamese troops were routed without USground support, proving they lacked the leadership and logistics to fight alone. By 1972, only massive American air power, reinstated by Nixon during the Easter Offensive, saved South Vietnam from collapse, while Nixonsimultaneously pursued détente with China and the USSR to isolate Hanoi. The relentless "Linebacker" bombing campaigns eventually forced North Vietnam back to the negotiating table, though the peace deal essentially replicated terms available years earlier. NUMBER 15

I can't quite believe that yet another year of us going on Wise Walks together has come and gone. In our last episode, I invited you to reflect on your previous Word of the Year, and I've been doing that too. Looking back, I can see how my word, Co-create, supported me in ways I couldn't have fully anticipated at the time. Sometimes we choose a word with a clear sense of direction or intuition about what will help us feel more aligned and in our True Stride. When I think about why this practice matters to me, I always come back to the idea of choosing a word for the year not as something to achieve, but as something to lean and live into. A word that helps me stay grounded when things feel uncertain and reminds me of who I want to be when life gets messy. As this new year begins, I found myself slowing down and really asking what kind of support I need right now, not just externally, but from within. On today's Wise Walk, I invite you to explore what a Word of the Year might look like for you. I share the word that emerged for me after reflecting on the past several years and what it means to create the conditions for growth, even when life feels transitional. Together, we'll consider how a single word can act as a quiet compass, helping us stay aligned, rooted, and open to what wants to unfold next. As you reflect on where you've been, where you are now, and how do you want to show up? What word best captures that intention for you this year? Is there a word you want to embody more fully, whether it feels literal and clear or more like a feeling or essence that you're drawn toward? Do you give yourself permission to let one word, or perhaps a few words, or a mantra, gently guide you through the coming year? What word could serve as a navigational star for you, grounding and centering you when things feel rocky or out of alignment? Looking back over the past five years and the seasons that shaped you, what feels ready to carry you into what's next? What word might help you transform, open, or root yourself in ways that feel aligned with who you are becoming? Which areas of your life feel most important to focus on right now, whether physical, mental, spiritual, or relational? Can you choose one word to serve as a steady reminder of how far you've come and where you're headed next? And as you acknowledge the work you've already done, how can you honor your continued growth and unfold it with compassion and trust? I look forward to going on this epic adventure with you in the coming year and blooming in ways we can't even expect right now. Trusting that it will unfold naturally. As always, I would love to hear what you took away from today's episode. Feel free to reach out and share. Then tune in to next Thursday's Wise Walk for another conversation. Until then, happy, happy New Year. In this episode: [03:37] Upon reflection, the idea of opening myself up to further possibilities washed over me. For the last 5 years, I've been going inward and looking for words that would help me grow. [04:44] I give myself permission to choose again and wonder what the possibilities are if I open myself up. [05:38] There has been a tending to my inner self, so my outer self can show up the way it's meant to. Co-create supported me last year, and this year the word that popped up for me is bloom. [06:06] Bloom is tending your garden and appreciating nature's growth from the soil nourishing a seedling, to growing and flourishing. [07:01] I love that this word means that I'm going to put some roots down even in my transitional stage. [10:03] Another cool thing about the word of the year is that many others including striders like yourself are going on this journey with me. [11:03] Thank you so much for listening, and I look forward to going on this adventure with you in the coming year! Memorable Quotes: "Blooming isn't about pushing or proving. It's about creating the conditions that allow growth to happen." - Mary Tess "You don't have to know exactly what's coming next to trust that something meaningful is unfolding." - Mary Tess "A word for the year isn't something to chase. On Day 3 of Closing the Year with Gratitude and Grace, we shift into GROUND—the practice of finding your footing before the new year arrives. If your mind has been looping through what happened this year (or racing ahead into what's next), this episode will bring you back into your body with a calming, science-backed breathing practice called Coherent Breathing (5 seconds in, 5 seconds out). You'll learn why grounding works—how slow, steady breathing supports your nervous system, quiets mental noise, and helps you feel safe enough to settle. Through a gentle shoreline story and an embodied guided meditation, you'll release the urge to "figure it all out" and instead reconnect with what's steady, true, and already within you. Perfect for year-end reflection, emotional regulation, anxiety relief, and New Year intention-setting. This is day 3 of a 7-day meditation series, "Closing the Year with Gratitude and Grace Meditations," episodes 3437-3443. Midway Blitz's aim was to “target” undocumented immigrants with serious criminal histories — “the worst of the worst,” Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said when announcing the initiative in early September.Yet, neighbors saw immigration agents detain day laborers, construction and landscaping workers and street vendors, mothers and fathers, many of whom had no criminal history.Federal agents often used violent and unlawful tactics during the operations, advocates and lawyers said. And they've “displayed a massive show of force,” said Mark Fleming, director of litigation for the National Immigrant Justice Center. Block Club Chicago was part of a team that found federal agents used chemical weapons on people in Chicago at least 49 times this fall.Chicagoans had been preparing for a surge in immigration enforcement since President Donald Trump was reelected. The city has long been a target of Trump's criticism, and his border czar, Tom Homan, promised that mass deportations would “start right here in Chicago.” Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested nearly 400 people in Chicago and in neighboring states during the 10 days after Trump's January inauguration, according to records obtained by Block Club.Still, Midway Blitz and At Large — and the chaotic, seemingly random arrests and violence that came with them — have exceeded Chicagoans' expectations.Host - Jon HansenReporter - Francia Garcia HernandezREAD MORE HERESUBSCRIBE OR DONATE TO OUR NON PROFIT NEWSROOM Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? Case Lawrence is the founder of CircusTrix. After helping shape the trampoline park category through early growth and major consolidation, he helped unify CircusTrix, Sky Zone, and Rockin' Jump under the Sky Zone brand, navigating adversity including COVID and the long work of integration. He later stepped away from day-to-day leadership and brought his hard-won lessons into the classroom, teaching entrepreneurship at the BYU Marriott School of Business, which also helped him translate years of stories into principles for new experience builders. Case's new book, Off the Ground, chronicles his journey in entrepreneurship and the trampoline park industry. In this interview, Case talks about the power of relationships, joy-based entrepreneurship, and influencer-based experiences The power of relationships “One of the key things I learned is the power of relationships.” Case frames Sky Zone's evolution as proof that big outcomes are rarely just the result of strategy on paper. He points to the trust between Jeff and Rick Platt, along with himself, as the glue that held a shared vision together through adversity, saying the three leaders “became partners in every true sense of the word” and stayed unified when outside forces could have splintered the effort. He also pulls the lens closer to the human side of deals, noting that founders bring emotion, identity, and fear into negotiations. “To really get a complicated deal done, especially these big mergers, you've got to delve into the human side.” For him, the win is not only the transaction, but building enough credibility and empathy that everyone can cross the finish line feeling respected and secure. Joy-based entrepreneurship “Most discretionary dollars now are in search of experience. They're in search of joy.” Case explains that entrepreneurship education has long centered on solving pain, but entertainment and attractions thrive on creating something people choose because it elevates their day. He argues we're entering a moment where the market is hungry for “heightened experience,” and that demands a new set of tools for identifying and building ideas rooted in delight, not frustration. He connects this to how experiences are becoming more accessible to create, pointing to trampoline parks as a breakthrough that proved you can deliver “outlier, non-everyday experiences with limited capital.” That shift unleashes imagination, invites more founders into the space, and sets the stage for the next wave of innovation, especially as tech-enabled experiences expand what's possible. Influencer-based experiences “Look to YouTube, look to the influencers, look what the young people are watching on TV now.” Case predicts that what audiences binge online will increasingly become what they demand in-person. He describes influencers as experience designers in public, building appetite through episodic “wild experiences” that viewers will soon want to participate in, not just watch. In his words, “the merging of influencer culture with FEC attractions is going to be big.” He also highlights the operational artistry required to translate entertainment into something guests can actually do. Using Ninja Warrior as an example, he notes that the job is to make it feel authentic while adjusting it for real people: “allow them to feel like they're participating in this authentically, but dumb it down, ease it down in a way that they can participate in it… and make them feel like a Ninja Warrior.” Case says Off the Ground is available for pre-order now on Amazon, and will be publicly available on January 20th, 2026. Dragging Russ's wife along for good measure, they headed up to Barrow-in-Furness for the penultimate ground at Holker Street on the Friday night (19th) before hooking around Morecambe Bay and down to Fleetwood for the big one…Ground 92, at Highbury Stadium on the Saturday. In this episode of Founder Talk, I sit down with Ryan Walsh, a drone industry veteran operating at the intersection of advanced technology, regulation, and global competition. We dive into what it really takes to build a tech company in heavily regulated industries, how drone innovation fell behind in the U.S., and what the growing conversation around UAPs reveals about advanced aerospace technology and how little the public actually understands about it.Ryan shares firsthand perspective from operating across global markets, including why Asia moved faster in drone adoption, how regulation shapes innovation more than founders expect, and what it really means to build hardware businesses where timelines and risk look very different from software. We also talk about the long, uncomfortable middle of entrepreneurship: sunk costs, delayed momentum, and the discipline required to keep going when results aren't immediate. We also explore the growing conversation around UAPs and what it reveals about how new technologies are misunderstood long before they're accepted. Ryan offers a grounded take on why many UAP sightings are likely tied to advanced aerospace and drone technology, and what that disconnect teaches founders about perception, narrative, and trust. You'll learn:✅ Why regulation and policy often matter more than the technology itself✅ How founders decide when to persist versus walk away✅ What drones, robotics, and AI signal about the future of logistics✅ Why UAP discussions highlight how society misunderstands new tech✅ How patience, discipline, and mission compound over timeIf you're building anything complex, regulated, or capital-intensive, this episode offers an honest look at the realities most founders never hear about.Connect with Ryan WalshGuest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan--walsh/Guest Website: https://www.valqari.com/If you are a B2B company that wants to build your own in-house content team instead of outsourcing your content to a marketing agency, we may be a fit for you! THE HORROR ON THE GROUND IN TOKYO Colleague James M. Scott. The raid began just after midnight, catching families asleep. The napalm bombs were designed to puncture roofs and spray fire inside homes, turning the wooden city into kindling. The resulting firestorm created a tidal wave of flame that moved across the city, blocked escape routes, and melted the glass of concrete buildings, killing those sheltering inside. Survivors, including a young girl named Shizuko Nishio, fled through an apocalyptic landscape. Photographer Koyo Ishikawa documented the event, describing the fire as a "surf wave" approaching from the ocean. NUMBER 6 1945 OKINAWA
In this special two-part collaboration, Jason Watkin, CEO of Purica and host of Swallow the Truth, sits down with David Stephan, VP of Truehope Canada, for a candid and unfiltered conversation on natural health, freedom, and power in Canada.Part 1 explores the strikingly similar beginnings of Purica and Truehope. Two companies that faced intense government opposition for helping Canadians access natural health products. Jason and David recount early battles with Health Canada, including armed raids intended to intimidate, coordinated pressure from government-funded agencies, and what they describe as misleading narratives pushed by state-supported media. The conversation also addresses the removal of access to EMPower Plus, the devastating human consequences that followed, and Health Canada's attempt to use personal tragedy to set a legal precedent that would criminalize parents for choosing natural health care. The episode closes with a broader discussion on corruption, power-grabbing, and how these forces are eroding trust, freedom, and humanity itself. This is a powerful opening chapter in a two part series. This is one of those activities that forms part of the substrate of the project, but in a customer visible sense adds zero value to the project. It's necessary, but unwelcome. Furthermore, it's the number one area where subcontractors notoriously overcharge their clients. I'm talking about excavation, site preparation, backfill and grading. All of this falls into the category of dirt work.At the core of this work is a high quality geotechnical survey. The geotech tells you the condition of the soils beneath the surface. Some conditions might be suitable for construction, and others not. --------------*Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

SUPPORT OUR END OF YEAR APPEAL! On this show, we hear from residents of DC, speaking out about the impact of increased policing by federal agents, including ICE officers, since August 2025. Those presented here were among the 130 people who testified for nearly 12 hours on December 4th 2025 before the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee of the DC Council. The Trump administration ordered this multi-million dollar surge in policing and deployment of the National Guard, despite the district’s 30-year low crime rate. That surge officially ended in September, but there are still more federal police openly collaborating with local police, leading to shootings and other violent encounters in DC neighborhoods. The show is made possible only by our volunteer energy, our resolve to keep the people's voices on the air, and by support from our listeners. In a twist of events, the FAA added not only DJI and Autel to the FCC-covered list, but also every drone produced in a foreign country, sending shockwaves throughout the industry. The FCC also added UAS Critical components produced in a foreign country to the covered list, including some that don't require FCC approval. A UAS Critical component is defined as Data transmission devices, Communications systems, Flight controllers, Ground control stations and UAS controllers, Navigation systems, Sensors and Cameras, Batteries and Battery Management Systems, and Motors. Before we go any further, I want to reassure you that YES, if you are a civilian flying your drone, you can still buy existing models of your favorite brand, foreign or not, while supplies last. No, your drone is not bricked. Only future models are affected. Being on the FCC Covered List means that the company cannot import, market, and sell NEW products in the United States. The FCC memo does mention a process by which the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security can make a specific determination that a given UAS does not pose a risk. At the moment, the process to do that is unclear. The news came through a 9-page memo in which the FCC explains that they bypassed the audit requirement that we have been talking about for a year now: "Although section 1709 requires a determination by an “appropriate national security agency,” rather than an Executive Branch interagency body, this determination satisfies the law because several appropriate national security agencies concurred in this determination." It is unclear who was part of the meeting but they indeed determined that "UAS produced in a foreign country pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States and to the safety and security of U.S. persons and should be included on the FCC's Covered List"They also provide "supporting evidence" as to what the national security threat is, including the fact that "UAS are also playing a critical enabling role on the battlefield in many modern conflicts. In Ukraine and Israel-Gaza, low-cost commercial UAS inflict extensive damage and have caused significant loss of life." and that "Drug Cartels are also reportedly using foreign-produced UAS to smuggle drugs into the United States and carry out attacks." I'm going to read a long paragraph here from the document but I think it' important for you to understand why you can't buy a new DJI drone model to fly with your kid at the park or to photograph a house for a realtor:"Permitting UAS critical components from foreign countries into the United States undermines the resiliency of our UAS industrial base, increases the risk to our national airspace, and creates a potential for large-scale attacks during large gatherings. Even when marketed as “commercial” or “recreational,” certain legal regimes in foreign countries can compel entities to provide real‑time telemetry, imagery, and location data above U.S. soil, or to change the UAS behavior via remote software updates. This poses clear risks that foreign countries could leverage UAS produced with critical components made in a foreign country to engage in intelligence collection, acts of terrorism, attacks on critical infrastructure in the U.S. homeland, or massive supply chain disruption." I'm going to repeat that this decision does not affect existing drones models. If you are working on federally funded projects, you likely may not be able to use a drone or brand that's on the covered list, even if it's an existing drone. It appears blue UAS and those on already approved DOD lists can still be flown.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said Tuesday he will not veto the so-called alternative budget that passed the City Council over the weekend, despite weeks of sharply criticizing parts of the spending plan as unbalanced and harmful to working Chicagoans. The announcement comes one week before a year-end deadline to pass a balanced 2026 budget. If Johnson had issued a mayoral veto, the city ran the risk of facing an unprecedented government shutdown, which could have interrupted services, paychecks and other operations.Host - Jon HansenReporter - Quinn MyersRead More Here Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? In this episode of the Becoming Unshakable podcast, I sit down with Neri Karra Sillaman, and this conversation stayed with me long after we stopped recording. I first met Neri at the Thinkers50 event in London, where she was recognized as a Radar Award winner. The moment she spoke about her work and her life, I knew I had to learn more. This episode is the result of that instinct. Neri shares her powerful journey as an immigrant entrepreneur and refugee, forced to leave Bulgaria at the age of eleven with her family and only two suitcases. She takes us inside what it means to rebuild life from a refugee camp, to navigate shame, loss, faith, and survival, and to carry those experiences into adulthood. What struck me most was how she reframes being unshakable, not as being unbreakable, but as being flexible, grounded in truth, and willing to live authentically even when life does not go as planned. We talk deeply about faith, worthiness, and the unseen forces that carry us through moments when the future feels impossible to imagine. Neri opens up about the scars that never fully heal, the role of self-awareness in leadership, and how community and compassion can serve as the foundation for both personal healing and business longevity. Her story behind writing Pioneers: Eight Principles of Business Longevity from Immigrant Entrepreneurs reveals how sometimes the work we resist is the work we are meant to do. This conversation is about resilience, but it goes beyond pushing through. It is about receiving as much as giving, about understanding your own worth, and about how early hardship can shape a deep capacity for connection, storytelling, and leadership. It is also a reminder that even in chaos, we can hold a vision for something greater. As you listen to Neri's story, I invite you to reflect on this. What part of your own story, especially the parts shaped by struggle, might actually be pointing you toward the life and leadership you are meant to live?

Our topic this week is needle art, our artist is Fleur Woods, and our sponsor is Avlea Folk Embroidery (avleafolkembroidery.com). Fleur started her career in the corporate arena to “see how the world works.” It worked by suppressing her creativity. She left the 9-to-5 world and dabbled in various art media as she tried to find what it was that allowed her to express what was in her mind. A conversation led her to needle and thread and she hasn’t quit since. Woods also just published her first book, The Untamed Thread, which is designed to provide a structure to help you discover your creative voice. Rip sits down with Andrea Freeman, James Beard Award-winning author of Ruin Their Crops on the Ground. Drawing on more than 20 years of research, Andrea unpacks how food, race, and class have shaped America's food system, exploring the historical roots of inequality that still influence what ends up on our plates today.Their conversation takes listeners on a journey from the Trail of Tears to contemporary food policies, revealing how government decisions and corporate interests have systematically marginalized communities, perpetuating cycles of poor health and limited access to nutritious food. Andrea's insights illuminate the ways in which food systems have been—and continue to be—tools of oppression, while also showing how understanding this history empowers us to advocate for meaningful change.Rob and Andrea dive into key topics including:The politics of food and its intersections with race and classFood deserts, systemic barriers, and ongoing food justice challengeThe historical impact of school lunch programs and agricultural subsidiesHow corporate influence shapes dietary guidelines and marketingThe lasting effects of colonial-era food policies on modern dietsAndrea also emphasizes the power of advocacy, inspiring listeners to see food not just as sustenance, but as a reflection of cultural identity and social justice. She encourages critical thinking about the choices available to consumers and how we can support policies that prioritize health and equity over profit.Watch the Episode on YouTubeEpisode WebpageLearn More About our 2026 Live PLANTSTRONG Events: https://plantstrong.com/pages/events Let Us Help Your PLANTSTRONG JourneyTake the Free 7-Day Challenge: https://liveplantstrong.com/free-7-day-challenge/ Learn More About Our Corporate Wellness Program: https://liveplantstrong.com/corporate-wellness/ COMPLEMENT: Use code PLANTSTRONG for 30% off at https://lovecomplement.com/pages/plantstrong-special-offer Follow PLANTSTRONG and Rip Esselstynhttps://plantstrongfoods.com/ https://www.facebook.com/GoPlantstrong https://www.instagram.com/goplantstrong/https://www.instagram.com/ripesselstyn/ Follow the PLANTSTRONG Podcast and Give the Show a 5-star RatingApple PodcastsSpotify
