When the guitar chords blair and the snare drum pops you have a couple of decisions. The few that come to me; scream along to the song, stage dive or begin to dodge the shoe of someone who is losing their mind to the sonics. Drew's acrobatic cartwheels, black gloves and rhythmic fist throwing is a sight to see. If the stage was lit with one light and he was the only one dancing it would make Pina Bausch ask herself, “What makes you move like that?” Drew hails from Long Island and has been a part of the scene for years. I walked into a contemporary minimalist restaurant wedged between Park Ave and Broadway on 21st. I sat down with a chef, unbinosticed to my novice mind; I was speaking with the CDC of Cosme. Chef Garnica is giving me a shot to work in a cuisine that I hold close to my heart. Gustavo Garnica is respected by all in the kitchen and is adored by the tortilla tias'. This conversation was eye opening hearing Chef Garnica talk about his travels from Mexico to Denmark to stage at Noma early on in his career. He would be considered in my eyes a gentle soul but don't get me wrong, when the tickets are ringing his demeanor demands a lot from people around him. His peers demand a lot out of him. You take a kid out of Fontana but you never take Fontana out of the kid. Lil Bubs aka Alebrto Reyes is more than a friend he has been the pillar of unconditional love and support. You tell me that this person isn't hardworking and I'll show you countless projects that have garnered critical attention with success to accompany it. Alberto and I have been friends for some time now but as we get older and continue our New York chapter together our lives together have changed forever. A cold blizzard sweeps Brooklyn causing folks to flee into their homes for shelter. Waiting it out to experience a livable day without fear of getting caught in a tumultuous circumstance. Who am I kidding, I'm not a novelist... I went to a show in a blizzard! But when I left that show I met a marvelous person, Sarah! A surrogate big sister, a powerful femme, and a New York hardcore encyclopedia of people. We hang out at shows and share work stories or devolage inner turmoil. Steven Callaway, now what can one say about this person. I have known him through my sister and brother in-law. My brother-in-law who looks like Joey Diaz's little brother would put Steven in his band of misfits toys. When I think of Steven I think of Sam from Lord of the Rings, that dude held it down, he lifted Frodo's sorry ass up a mountain. Would Steven lift me up a mountain? I don't know but I do know this kid has heart!! My mama told me once to know your roots and know who you are. Honestly she is not wrong, and my mom has always shared words of wisdom. My dad on the other hand is a huge believer in hard work gets you far and I subscribe to that thought. My little sister on the other hand is an intersection on every one in my family, she is my mom's partner in crime, my dad's unbridled work ethic, my sibling's thoughtfulness and she is fearless. Literally, what am I doing? To some extent I am trying to build communication with my family via hardcore/ alternative music and on the other I want to hear how my voice sounds. This first episode documents the relationship I have with my oldest sister Tina and my brother-in-law Martin. We took a trip down memory lane and shared how we all came to build our own language with distortions, grooves, and shows.
