You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program of Able ARTS Work. Nancy: Welcome back to Artbeat Radio. Today, we celebrate Group: Halloween! Brian: Coming up is the song that we've been covering called ,The Monster Mash, and it's a graveyard smash and its groooooovy! *Cover of The Monster Mash plays* Nancy: Next, we have a spooky sound reel by San Diego. Listen in as we hear Zombies and Ghosts. Hit it, San Diego! *growling and moaning heard with footsteps. A door creaks open. Chains are heard, followed by ghostly moans and zombie noises* Eric: Up next, we present a special guest named, Jack. This man knows a lot about bats and he's going to tell us all about it. Take it away, Jack! Jack: Boo! *laughter* Got you, didn't I? I know that Halloween is coming soon, but there's a classic Halloween animal that's probably one of the most misunderstood. Today, I'm going to tell you all about bats, but remember, don't listen to the scary myths about them but before we can get started let me tell you something here. It's our job- no, our duty to dispel the popular notion about them. How's that going to help? Well, let's get started here. Bats have good eyesight. There's never a bat that's blind. Bats aren't really scary. The reality is they're shy and gentle creatures. They're harmless! Bats do hang by their feet. How do they do that? Bats feet hook backwards. Their toe claws are hooked so they can hang upside down while they sleep! All bats have an amazing technique called echolocation. Come on, say it with me! Echo...lo... cation! Well, let me show you how it works. When he makes a sound, like a high-pitched squeak, the sound bounces off an object and the sound comes back to the ear. To let them sense their surroundings it in fact they can detect objects as thin as a human hair in total darkness. A little brown bat can eat over 600 mosquitos in an hour! Which makes it a less itchy place here. Goodbye bug spray, hello bats! Did you know that some bats fly South for the winter? and speaking of which- from Mexico all the way to South America- The Vampire Bat! The most misunderstood bad in the world. But don't worry, vampire bats don't get blood from people. *buzzer sound* It's just not true. Vampire bats don't get blood from people at all. See, they prefer mammals and birds native to their environments. Did you know there are about 1,100 different kinds of bats in the world! And they're all so different! but the biggest ones are the great Indian Flying Fox and the Gold Crown Fruit bat. It's not how you look, it's who you are. Bats are the good guys! They're our friends. *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff* We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. For more information, please go to our website. Ableartswork.org. He has been a successful businessman and film producer for many years, with such hits as Snow Dogs, Ali, and All About the Benjamins. Jonathan Garcia just gets shit done. He has made a life of putting himself in places of power and influence, at times at great cost to his sanity and humanity. As an undergrad and graduate student at APU, he forged his identity as a co-founder of LASA (Latin American Student Association), as a leader in student government, and as a member of the administration itself. That put him at the table with rich, conservative, bigoted people, but Jonathan worked to form relationships and influenced their views. The significance of the fact that he got the president of the school at the time, Jon Wallace, to change his views on immigration can't be overstated. APU is a place where hispanic students can go with support and financial aid, regardless of citizenship status. Real change as a result of Jonathan and LASA. For people like me, I have only disgust and hurt when I think of APU's administration and board of trustees. I was never given the benefit of the doubt, and I was listed as a "bad" or "dangerous" professor simply because I dared talk about social justice, racism, sexuality, and identity in my classes. But Jonathan reminds me that the people I hate are, in fact, people. He gave them the chance to see him and rethink their views. He's a goddamn hero. Jonathan is currently the Chief of Staff at Portland Public Schools. He has worked in education at several huge school districts, and he was named by Forbes as one of their 30 Under 30 in Education. Before LASA (Latin America Student Association), ethnic orgs at APU were places to hide out away from the oppressive white culture that dominated the campus. The Multi-Ethnic Programs office was safe space to find your people and build communities of support. Matthew Gonzalez, Rod Olmeda-Lopez, and Jonathan Garcia created LASA during the beginning of the Obama era. Not content to just offer support and care to the shell-shocked Latino(x) community's daily experiences of racism, they forced APU to confront its racism head on. They changed school policy and fought the school's racism when the school told them they couldn't honor the late Joe Snell, the director of MEP, with a Dia de los Muertos offrenda. APU only had Town Hall meetings when the shit really hit the fan. Just a year earlier, it held one to address one of the many swastika incidents. LASA would force a second one when it voiced its anger at having their Dia de los Muertos display taken down for no other reason than it was not a white tradition. The admin told them it had pagan roots despite acknowledging that school-sanctioned events around Halloween and Christmas also had pagan roots. The difference? Hmmmm.... But it wasn't just protesting. They worked with administration and the board of trustees to get APU designated as "serving hispanic communities," they made financial aid available to undocumented students, and they got Spanish translations for the live stream of graduation. Just as importantly, LASA pushed the culture to pay attention to all non-white communities, which may sound strange, but believe me...that was something. These guys are my brothers. I'm so proud of who they have become, and I'm honored to have seen them grow from confused young evangelical men into who they are today. Do I poke fun of them? Of course. But they are two of the strongest and most admirable people I've ever known. Enjoy the episode. The union that represents teachers in Portland Public Schools says educators and students are at a breaking point. They want the district to suspend in-person high school classes on Fridays for the rest of the school year and cut instructional time for younger students as well. The union says these measures are necessary to avoid more fights and disruptive behavior in schools, as well as burnout among teachers. The district is pushing back, saying students can't afford to lose more class time. We hear a variety of perspectives from Jonathan Garcia, chief of staff to the superintendent for PPS; Cleveland High School senior Jackson Weinberg, who serves as the student representative on the PPS board; and Steve Lancaster, a social studies teacher at Lincoln High School who is also the Portland Association of Teachers bargaining chairperson.

We all want to make sure our recumbent purchase transactions are transparent, honest and fair. We talk to Steve and Patti Erickson about their years long investigation into false prestige branding of recumbent trikes. Then Doug Davis shows us how to recognize "knock off" products that look just like the brands you know. Our panel then share their considerable experience with buying and selling bent with eyes wide open. Jonathan Garcia jumps in next with his first look at the ePhoenix 406 LWB from RANS that he helped design. We have two great LBR Review Team segments next. Tim Segard from Bent Revolution evaluates the HP Velotechnik e-Scorpion 20fs and Nina Paley shows us why sunblocks suck! It all kicks off with Honza Galla and our bent news report.00:00:00 Intro00:00:59 What’s on Today’s Show00:02:35 Panel Introduction00:05:50 Sponsor Introduction00:07:20 Recumbent News in 5 with Honza Galla00:17:00 Avoiding Recumbent Scams-Steve Erickson “False Prestige Branding”00:27:00 Avoiding Recumbent Scams-LBR Panel discussion00:50:00 Avoid Buying Counterfeit/Illegitimate Parts-Doug Davis01:11:30 RANS ePhoenix 406 electric long wheelbase bike-Jonathan Garcia from Rose City Recumbents01:21:25 LBR Review Team-HP Velotechnik fs eScorpion 20 reviewed by Tim Segard01:28:40 Nina Paley reviews Easy Racer Recumbent Seat Fix01:30:47 LBR Review Team-Nina Paley reviews sunblocks for bents01:34:25 Sponsor Thanks01:36:00 Coming up next month01:37:35 Goodbye to panel and crewPlease subscribe to us on YouTube https://goo.gl/CHOOgX and Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/laidbackbikereport/ if you haven't already done so. The Jack Skille Show is produced by HMMR Media, a leader in helping athletes and coaches learn how to get better. Become a member to get access to a wealth of articles, videos, podcasts and more training resources. Highlights from this episode: 0:00 - Getting into an ice sport while growing up in Houston. 4:45 - Switching from short track to long track speed skating. 7:00 - Creating your own path and developing work ethic. 19:45 - Consistency: "I can't tell you how many athletes were way better than me when I was coming up: technically or physically. "The rock band that has unlimited funds to go into the studio doesn't always have the drive of a band with just 3 hours to record."
We have five incredibly talented bent riders with performances of original music they put together just for this special webcast. From the U.K. we have Kevin Brown singing with his blues guitar and Jon Hodkin playing his tuba with piano accompaniment. From New Zealand we have our Swiss pal David Brandenberger playing some heavier rock and then Jonathan Garcia is on from Portland belting out a couple of sentimental tunes with his acoustic guitar. Finally, our own Tim Cain joins us from Des Moines with a sweet video he created with his rock band. I recommend headphones if you've got them to get the most out of this very unusual and special Laidback Bike Report. You can watch this video on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/HlvtC1vk5fw**Table of Contents for this month’s video.
