Today on Ministry Monday we return from our holiday break! Our first episode of 2025 features Steven Warner the founder and director emeritus of the Notre Dame Folk Choir, as well as founder of the Newman Vocare Ensemble. Like many pastoral musicians, the Holy Spirit clearly is working through Steve and his decades-long work in music and ministry. Steve is no stranger to the podcast: we spoke of his connection to Saint John Henry Newman while he taught at the Newman Centre for Faith and Reason in Dublin, and we also discussed the Catholic Church in Ireland on another episode. Today's episode focuses on his most recent project, titled “The Contemplative Classroom.” If you know Steve's music you know that many of his compositions are ostinato refrains within an accessible singing range for most singers. Steve has taken this idea and begun to make a curriculum for classrooms that cultivate healthy singing, mindfulness, and spirituality in a way that, I dare say, may not have ever been created quite like this. It's a great start for this Catholic Schools week, and a great way to begin our podcast for the year.

Imagine an environmentalist. Are you picturing a Birkenstock-clad hippie? An office worker who hikes on weekends? A political lobbyist? What about a modern day timber worker? This last group is at the center of University of Oregon historian Steven C. Beda's new book, Strong Winds and Widow Makers: Workers, Nature, and Environmental Conflict in Pacific Northwest Timber Country (U Illinois Press, 2023). In Beda's telling, it's timber workers, as lovers of the outdoors who also rely upon healthy forests for their livelihoods, who are often at the forefront of local environmentalism, including organizing at the crossroads of labor and environmental activism. From the late 19th century onwards, timber works imbued the Pacific Northwest with a sense of place inaccessible to upper-class Northern California newcomers who changed the region's cultural and political calculus in the late 20th century. We live in a timber society, Beda argues, and no one knows what that means nearly as much as the workers who turn trees into books like this. Learn more about your ad choices. Choir season is quickly approaching. We know that you're planning which choir anthems to use, the rehearsal schedule and the plans for each rehearsal, but in this episode, we encourage you to pause and think about the needs of a choir a little bit differently this fall. Today's guest is Steven C. Warner. Steven Warner is the founder of the Notre Dame Folk Choir and, until recently, worked for the Notre Dame Newman Center for Faith and Reason in Dublin, Ireland. One of Steve's many gifts lies in his ability to foster true inclusion and listening in his ensembles. Today we focus on the special qualities that elevate ensembleship within a choir, most of which are not actually music.

Author Steven C. Harms discusses the first two books in his new thriller series, Give Place to Wrath and The Counsel of the Cunning. In these fast-paced thrillers, Steven's main character is Roger Viceroy, a veteran police detective in Milwaukee, Wisconsin who is recently divorced, wrestling with his own faith, and extremely good at his job of solving murders. Steven's goal with each book is to take a morality message and embed it within a secular mystery, and he is currently working on book number three.

Christian author, Steven C. Harms began his writing career in an unusual way and continues it today in an equally unusual way. He writes mainstream novels with titles straight from Scripture, a struggling Christian protagonist, and deep Christian themes. With a goal to give Christian readers thrilling books and secular readers something to think about, the Roger Viceroy books sound fascinating! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How Will This Detective Stop a Serial Killer? And... can he find a man missing for ten years... way over in Guatemala? And what else is coming for Roger Viceroy? Steven C. Harms talked about this and more as we chatted the other day. You won't want to miss the story of his first foray into fictional writing. And from what I've read so far in Give Place to Wrath, you won't want to miss this one if you love a good thriller. I'd hoped to have the book read before this episode went live, but I didn't want to keep everyone waiting. So, what I can say is that so far, this book isn't as tough to read (graphic wise) as Steven James' Patrick Bowers (that's the name I couldn't remember!) series. Steve is working on the third book now, and from what I've seen, he might need to hurry. I think after I finish the series I'm reading now, I'll be plowing through this one. Good news for readers, he hopes to write a huge series of Roger Viceroy books. EEEP! Give Place to Wrath by Steven C. Harms Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award Finalist – Best Mystery American Book Fest American Fiction Awards Finalist – Mystery/Suspense Detective Roger Viceroy, divisional head of the Midwest Region Special Crimes Unit, awakes one morning to a bombing in a wealthy suburb of Milwaukee. As he and his team dive into the investigation, a mysterious clue launches a manhunt with scant other evidence to point them in the right direction. Over the coming weeks, the related murders unfold, each with a unique twist and the same clue left behind. Viceroy uncovers one other common thread—a seemingly random association with the small north woods town of Curwood, Wisconsin. As the death toll mounts, Viceroy has to connect the dots and stop the carnage before it reaches the final target, Governor Kay Spurgeon.
