Is the word "marijuana" racist? Some say it is. Some say it isn't. Who's right? Should we ditch marijuana altogether and just use the Greek and Latin derived "cannabis" instead? Or is that cultural erasure? And what's up with Harry Anslinger, the first federal drug czar? He's often cited as the racist bureaucrat who weaponized and racialized marijuana the word and the plant at the expense of Black and Brown communities. But where'd he get those ideas from in the first place? In this episode Tiara seeks answers from the Latinx community, including Portland-based graphic designers, Savina Monet, and Yvonne Perez Emerson of Make & Mary, as well as Dr. Isaac Campos, Associate Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati and author of the book, Home Grown: Marijuana and the Origins of Mexico’s War on Drugs. --Tiara Darnell is the host and executive producer of High, Good PeopleTheme music by FritzwaPodcast image design by Tiara Darnell See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's not easy being Black in Oregon, a state originally founded as a white utopia. For Portia Mittons, a transplant from Chicago, it's even harder: She's the only person of color in Sumpter, Oregon--a town more than five hours east of Portland, population, roughly 200 people. She moved there to open the Coughie Pot, a cannabis dispensary the town didn't want, but legally was powerless to stop despite multiple attempts. In this episode Tiara takes a road trip to Sumpter to meet Portia, to find out the Coughie Pot's origin story, and to learn how Sumpter got got by ganja.Tiara Darnell is the host and executive producer of High, Good PeopleTheme music by FritzwaPodcast image design by Tiara Darnell See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
