Send us a textEpisode 285 - Fishing, Gatherings and Good PeopleI'm back on the road once more and this time I'm in Derbyshire to attend one of our gatherings at Mallon and Green in Bakewell.I managed to tag on some fishing too and fish the Derwent with Geoff Hadley and bump into a few friends along the way as we fish late into the night. The next morning, I attend the annual event that takes place in Bakewell to celebrate the anniversary of the river Wye switching to the dry fly only rule after James Ogden showed how devastating this method of fishing could be.I speak with Jan Hobot who makes the ceremonial cast on the river and learn a little bit about this tradition that has taken place for 160 years.Later in the day, I head over to Mallon and Green, a fly shop, that over the last 3 years has become the hub for the local fishing community.I speak with some of the people attending about fishing who share some interesting stories. This a snapshot into fly fishing on many levels that I hope you'll enjoy listening to.
In this episode, we dive into a profound question that has been asked for generations: why do bad things happen to good people? Taking a biblical perspective, the discussion centers around the story of Job, a man who faced unimaginable hardships despite him living a good life. By examining the first two chapters of the Book of Job, we discover a behind-the-scenes look at the spiritual battle between God and Satan, shedding light on the nature of suffering, divine sovereignty, and human perception of good and bad.

God's will isn't a mystery for the spiritual elite — it's a path revealed to surrendered, humble hearts. If you're willing to lay down your agenda, slow your pace, and trust His timing, you might just find that His direction is clearer than you think.
Today, we gathered to face one of the most challenging realities of our faith: the presence of suffering and the question of why God allows pain, even for those who love Him. We began by celebrating the good news of God's work through our church family—both locally and globally—reminding ourselves that every good thing is a gift from God's grace. Yet, as we continued in our “Forged” series, we turned to the hard truth that life is not always as we plan, and sometimes God's path for us includes pain, disappointment, and unanswered prayers.Drawing from 2 Corinthians 12, we looked at the life of Paul, a man who experienced both extraordinary blessings and deep suffering. Paul's “thorn in the flesh” is a powerful reminder that even the most faithful followers of Jesus are not exempt from hardship. Paul pleaded with God to remove his suffering, but God's answer was not what he expected. Instead of removal, God offered His sustaining grace: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This is a truth that runs throughout Scripture—God does not always change our circumstances, but He changes us in the midst of them.We explored the analogy of photography, where negatives are necessary to produce positives. In the same way, the negatives in our lives—the pain, the disappointments, the thorns—are part of the process God uses to develop us into the image of Christ. We are not promised a life free from suffering, but we are promised God's presence and His grace to sustain us. The story of Job, the suffering of the apostles, and ultimately the suffering of Jesus Himself all point to a God who redeems pain and uses it for His glory and our good. The challenge for us is not to avoid suffering, but to lean into it, trusting that God is forging something beautiful even in the darkroom of our pain. We can choose to become bitter, battered, or better. The invitation is to allow God's grace to meet us in our weakness, to let our suffering become a platform for His power, and to remember that this is not the end—heaven is ahead, and God's redemption is sure.Chapters :[00:00] - Welcome[01:00] - Celebrating God's Work Through Our Church[03:30] - The Apollo 13 “Successful Failure” and God's Unexpected Plans[05:45] - Prayer for God's Comfort and Guidance[08:01] - Rethinking “Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?”[10:38] - The Reality of Sin and God's Grace[12:40] - Paul's Suffering and the “Thorn in the Flesh”[15:40] - Wrestling with God's Refining Process[18:27] - The Analogy of Negatives and Positives in Life[21:11] - The Darkroom: How God Develops Us Through Pain[25:32] - Suffering in the Story of Scripture[27:39] - Paul's Visions, Blessings, and Humility[32:28] - God's Grace in Weakness[54:10] - Choices in Suffering: Bitter, Battered, or Better[01:04:11] - Closing Prayer and Invitation

And more importantly, why can we have everything in life and still feel empty inside? Is karma why some people seem to have all the luck? Is there cosmic justice in the afterlife? “How good is good enough?” Here's the short answer. We could never be good enough to go to Heaven. It's simply not possible for humans to satisfy the justice of God with our efforts at being good. The Bible teaches us that being a good person could never save us. Instead, salvation is based on the goodness of Jesus, on our behalf.Main Points:1. Jesus, in kindness and love, took our sins upon himself and once and for all died in our place. This is the definition of goodness. God did for us what we could not do for ourselves. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, satisfying the justice of a righteous and holy God.2. Forgiveness of our sins and the promise of eternal life is received as a gift from God. We receive this gift as we confess Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. We place our faith in his death and resurrection for our sins, instead of placing our faith in our good works.3. Refuse to buy into the deception that you could be good enough to go to Heaven. Put your faith in Jesus, who was good on our behalf.Today's Scripture Verses:Judges 21:25 - “In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.Proverbs 14:12 - “There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.”Isaiah 64:6 - “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.”Titus 3:4-5 - “When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Send Us a Message (include your contact info if you'd like a reply)Divorce has a reputation for bringing out surprising behaviors in otherwise composed, reasonable people. Even the most patient parent might find themselves sending aggressive texts at 2 AM. The kindest spouse might suddenly become fixated on revenge. The most logical professional might make financially devastating decisions based purely on emotion. Why does this happen? In this episode, we explore the psychological underpinnings of why good people often behave badly during divorce. We unpack the popular saying that "criminal courts see bad people on their best day, while divorce courts see good people on their worst day" - a profound truth that helps us understand the perfect storm of emotional, practical, and identity challenges divorce creates. When someone faces the end of their marriage, they're not just untangling a relationship - they're grieving the life they expected to have. This grief, combined with practical pressures like custody arrangements and financial concerns, pushes many into survival mode. And when we're in survival mode, our capacity for rational thinking diminishes dramatically. As divorce coaches, we've developed specific approaches for working with clients caught in reactive emotional states. We share practical techniques for creating judgment-free spaces where clients can explore what's really happening beneath their anger, fear, or revenge fantasies. Through powerful questions that invite self-awareness, we help clients align their behavior with their true values and long-term goals.Whether you're a helping professional working with divorcing clients or someone navigating your own divorce journey, this conversation offers compassionate insights into the emotional complexity of ending a marriage. Remember, reacting emotionally doesn't make someone a bad person - it makes them human. With the right support, these challenging moments can become opportunities for profound growth and self-discovery. When John the Baptist appeared on the scene preaching a fiery message of repentance, the religious elite bristled at the idea that they needed cleansing. Confident in their own goodness, they saw no need for heart change. But John's words pierced their polished exterior, exposing unclean hearts that no amount of religious performance could cleanse. Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 742 Is your fear of suffering keeping you from discovering the deepest treasures of your soul? Author and extreme adventurer, Akshay Nanavati, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 742, to share how embracing suffering during his 60-day solo crossing of Antarctica became the key to transcending limitations and unlocking pure potential, what his journey taught him about the paradox of oneness, and why the only way out of suffering is through it. "When you stop resisting suffering, it frees you from the grasp of suffering. It's not the suffering in and of itself that I seek. Suffering is the means, not the purpose. The purpose is what it gives you access to. Traveling with little ones can stir anxiety—but our recent trip reminded me of something powerful. Behind every plane, train, and ferry were people who showed up, did their job with care, and got us home safely. In a world full of fear, don't forget: love still fuels good people doing the right thing every day.You Got This, Ryan
There are shit bags in every nation, race, continent, neighborhood.......... They come in every shape, size, and form. I know a lot of good Asians, Blacks, Mexicans, Africans.......Europeans..... I know the good and bad in every sector represented in the human race. They're everywhere. One thing I can tell you is, you can't group everyone into one category just because one of them has made mistakes or became a bad example for their people. We can't lump people together in anything. Operating with absolutes. It cripples us as a whole. What I can tell you is, we do have a responsibility to call people out of every race, creed, color, etc. As the human race, we have to make clear the directions of what's acceptable and not acceptable in society. So, the next time you hear someone of a certain race, color or creed did something fucked up, just know there's a counter balance in existence. One person does not have the power or authority to represent one whole population or segment of people. Keep it light and do right, no matter the shades of good and bad.
