The MasterBeta Ladies podcast celebrates climbing through the lens of women in the community. We talk to some rad slaydies, include some silly segments, and generally have a little fun.
Abby Dione is a delightful and thoughtful climber and owner of the Coral Cliffs climbing gym located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (check out the fabulous Coral Cliffs website here). She also happens to be the first black woman to own a climbing gym in the United States. Join us for this episode in which we discuss Abby’s introduction to climbing, her decades long practice of a martial art I still cannot pronounce, and the hope and positive change that Abby brings to the world (both climbing and muggle!)
World-famous climber Sasha DiGiulian crushes on this episode where we chat about what it's like to be Sasha DiGiulian, what it's like to be Canadian, the joys of therapy, and the roles that positivity, self-esteem, and social media play in the life of this bad ass lady.
A nearly 13 minute mini episode with reasons and excuses for why we've been off the air for so long, interpreted and delivered by a graduate student of counseling... so like, super light and fun!
Your host briefly gives explanation for missed episodes and explores the semantics of mental health.
A delightful episode in which anthropologist and climber Roanne van Voorst joins us to really get into fear, and also her book FEAR! Chat includes fear managing techniques from some of your favorite climbers like Lynn Hill, Steph Davis, and Hazel Findlay.
Whitney Burton is a special ed and reading intervention teacher and climber who currently resides in Golden, Colorado. Originally from Olympia, Washington, Whitney is one half of the climbing duo @truckbedboulderers with her long-time partner Ben Firth. In this episode we talk her training regime, periods, coaching kids, Whit's recent experience with a nutritional coach, how nice it is to be told to eat more, and talk just a little, tiny bit about crying. We also enjoy a little mansplainin’…!!!
The delightful duo of Mary Catherine Eden and Mercadi Carlson - you may know them as @tradprincess and @mersendyclimberson on Instagram- join us for a delightful conversation about female climbing partners, crying, hotboxing, and your mom. Mary and Cadi (say it like "Sadie" people) are rock and rafting guides with Red River Adventures in Moab, Utah and super rad photographers. Self-described crack addicts, these two are at home at The Creek AND push them selves to be well-rounded climbers. Also, they funny.
Hazel Findlay is a 28-year-old professional climber and mental training coach. She’s been climbing since she was 6, competing since she was 7, and also is delightfully philosophical and British. In this episode we chat about the psychological aspects of climbing, the experience of flow, and Hazel’s perspective on the importance of mental training for climbers. We recorded this episode via Skype: Hazel on location in Spain and me in the parking lot of the Bend Downtown Library. This episode also features an extension of “I Peed In My Belay Spot” from Episode 7 with listener favorite Cayla Stahley. Check it out!
Natalie is the first transgender woman to bike the Pan American Highway. She's also a climber, writer, photographer aaaaand is bistitchual (look it up). Nat kindly took a little break from all the pedaling to record with us from a cozy spot in Guadalajara. We chat about the biking, her experiences as both male and female, gender based pay gaps, how after-market vaginas work, and record a new segment: Tent Sex!!
We chat with woman of many, many interests Hannah Allen-Young. Topics include climbing (duh), bouldering, problem setting, poetry, failure, and pancakes are briefly mentioned.
In Episode 7 of the MasterBeta Ladies podcast, we chat with climber and student Claire Bukowski- that's pronounced "BOO" like a ghost. Claire has a huge following on Instagram, thanks to her spiderman-like climbing ability, her bright ass clothes, and photos by her talented papa Dr. Todd Bukowski. Because I was more focused on having fun and eating gummi bears, we (LUCKILY!) are joined by previous interviewee climber Cayla Stahley (Episode Five) for a new segment called "I Peed In My Belay Spot". You'll have to listen to find out more about that gem.
