On the latest episode of Voice of the Mountains, Steve is joined by one of the most accomplished young climbers on the planet, Sasha DiGiulian. Sasha fell in love with the sport at her older brother's birthday party at a climbing gym when she was six years old. Within a year, she was competing and by the time she graduated from high school, she was red, pointing 5.14. She continued climbing while a student at Columbia University and rattled off several U.S. and Pan-American sport climbing championships, adding a world championship gold medal in the all around in 2011. Sasha has dozens of first free ascents around the world to her name and however impressive Sasha is on the rock, she may be even more impressive off of it. She's a filmmaker, an activist and an author. Like so many climbers, Sasha has firsthand knowledge of the sport's inherent dangers and tragedies, which she bravely shares. And like too many women in our sport, Sasha has had unfortunate firsthand experiences with some of the chauvinistic gatekeeping, which sadly is still prevalent in climbing as well as in our wider culture. Steve and Sasha explore Sasha's unique role in the climbing world and the dualities she has discovered throughout her career. If you'd like to learn more about Voice of the Mountains, check out the website: https://uphillathlete.com/voiceofthemountains/Or visit us at uphillathlete.com

Sasha was just the third woman in the World to climb the grade 9a (5.14d), and she has more than 30 First Ascents and First Female Ascents to her name. Some of her sport FFAs include 14d/9a Era Vella in Spain, 14c/8c+ Southern Smoke and Pure Imagination at the Red River Gorge, and she has onsighted multiple 5.14a / 8b+ routes. She is the first woman to free the north face of the Eiger by way of Magic Mushroom, a technical 2,000 foot climb; she was the first woman to free Bella Vista, a big wall in the Dolomites with difficulty up to 5.14b / 8c; and Sasha was the first woman and only the second human to free the Trilogy in the Canadian Rockies - three separate climbs that feature 5.14 pitches and total 9000 vertical feet. With all of those groundbreaking wins one might assume things come easy for Sasha but let me assure you that she is no stranger to struggle. Just a couple years ago Sasha underwent double hip surgery where doctors cut through muscle and bone to such an extreme she had to learn how to walk again… and that's just one example of many struggles that we explore in our chat. Sasha is as dedicated as they come, both on and off the wall, and is a tireless voice for climbing access, women's rights, and the environment. - CHAPTERS: Struggle: 0:16:20 Training: 0:19:23 Nutrition: 0:31:53 Tactics: 0:47:25 Mental Game: 0:56:12 Purpose: 1:07:16 - Follow along on Instagram @sashadigiulian and @thestruggleclimbingshow - BIG THANKS TO THE AMAZING SPONSORS OF THE STRUGGLE: PhysiVantage: the official climbing-nutrition sponsor of The Struggle. Sasha DiGiulian is no stranger to fear. Sure, tagging first ascents and pushing the limits in rock climbing — not just for women, but all climbers — sounds scary. But that fear is obvious, and it comes in many forms. Fear can also be facing career-ending surgery — choosing between two painful options. Or, it can be the fear of showing your true self on camera and not knowing how the “comment section” will respond. It can also be starting a business, writing an autobiography, or joining the high-profile political fight against climate change. Fear is all these things, and DiGiulian knows each of them. This episode dives into those fears — and her triumphs. It gets into the truth behind signing a pro contract, becoming a Red Bull athlete, and maturing into a leader within the sport and outside of it. Special thanks to Red Bull Summer Edition Juneberry for helping make this episode possible! The post Moving Mountains With Sasha DiGiulian appeared first on GearJunkie.

In January of 2015, I spent the night in a haunted hotel in Oklahoma City and wrote about the experience in The Huffington Post. That would begin a series of articles I called "Sleeping Around" where I explored unusual sleeping situations and what they could teach us about our own sleep. In 2020, I began working with Sleep.com to create content for their new website completely devoted to sleep and topics surrounding it. One day, Sam Bennett, their senior vice president of marketing asked me what my dream sleep project would be. Easy. I want to make a film version of Sleeping Around.A few weeks later we were filming three episodes: a few days on the road with musical artist Shakey Graves, 24 hours with the Fort Worth Fire Department, and a night sleeping on a portaledge with professional Red Bull climber Sasha Digiulian. To mark the milestone of recording our tenth episode, I wanted to record this bonus episode for listeners to take them behind the scenes of this project, and hopefully share why it is so important to me.
Professional rock climber Sasha DiGiulian sat down with us to tell us about her career as a world record holder, former world champion, and her upcoming expedition. Plus why she founded SEND Bars, her work as an activist, and life as a Red Bull athlete. But before all of that, we discuss Patrick Reid's lawsuit, Deshaun Watson's increased punishment, and some TV news.
A long time coming, I'm pumped to finally share my conversation with pro and world champion climber Sasha DiGiulian. We don't waste any time diving right into so many important topics. Starting with a conversation about goals and sharing them out with the world, making sure to hit on Sasha's upbringing and journey to her first love that is climbing, and also touch on topics like disordered eating and bullying. Sasha also gets vulnerable as she talks through navigating injury and her progression through recovering from hip surgery during the pandemic, which she admits produced some pretty isolating and dark feelings along the way. Boundary-pushing big wall climber, Sasha DiGiulian, holds multiple first ascents and more than 30 female firsts for some of the world’s most revered and difficult big wall climbs. In this episode, Rob Pope chats to Sasha about her journey from six-year-old indoor climber to world-renowned pro and free soloist - touching on her historic ascent of the Rocky Mountains Trilogy as the first woman (and only second person ever) to complete the trio of climbs in one season. From unexpectedly having to free solo one of her earliest big wall first-ascents as the holds crumbled away in her hands 1,000ft up without any protection, to experiencing the exhilaration of climbing in a flow state whilst conquering the 5.14-grade Rocky Mountains Trilogy in 2018, Sasha chats about the risks and rewards that come with climbing when the ground is way beneath her feet. She describes the moment she thought she was paralysed, and reveals the method she sometimes uses when she’s feeling scared of falling mid-climb by discussing her relationship with fear.“Even after 20 years of climbing, I don’t think fear ever goes away.” Listen to all episodes and discover more about How to Be Superhuman at http://redbull.com/superhuman

YOUR SUCCESS IS IN YOUR OWN HANDS. What does it take to be a champion? You have to love what you do. You have to care about the little details that other people let slide. “PASSION IS THE NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT TO SUCCEEDING IN ANYTHING.” Are you governed by fear? If so, it’s time to figure out if what you’re scared of is real or imaginary. What if there really isn’t anything to be afraid of? You might have some setbacks or “fall,” but at the end of the day you’ll be fine. In the face of stress, you can get overwhelmed by negative emotions, or you can look forward. You can instead focus on the task ahead. It’s all about your mindset. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about fear with a champion climber who has learned to be mental tough by constantly pushing her limits: Sasha Digiulian. Sasha Digiulian first began climbing at 6 years old, in 1998. She has won the World Championships for Female Overall and has placed Silver in the Bouldering World Championships, as well as Bronze in the Duel. Sasha has been the undefeated Panamerican Champion 2004 to the present, and she is a three-time US National Champion. Outdoors, Sasha is the first North American woman to climb the grade 9a, 5.14d, recognized as one of the hardest sport climbs achieved by a female. She has done two. Sasha was the third woman in the world to accomplish this grade. Additionally, she has onsighted multiple 8b+’s, 5.14a’s, ascended groundbreaking multi-pitch routes of up to 1000 feet of 8c climbing, and has accomplished multiple First Ascents and 28 First Female Ascents around the world, including a First Female Ascent on the North Face of the Eiger. Sasha has learned to trust the process and the universe in order to quiet her anxiety. She says that the only way to get up a mountain is to think positively. She’ll find herself saying, “Just go, just go, just go” when she’s in a tough spot. So get ready to learn how to have the mindset of a champion risk-taker on Episode 731. World-famous climber Sasha DiGiulian crushes on this episode where we chat about what it's like to be Sasha DiGiulian, what it's like to be Canadian, the joys of therapy, and the roles that positivity, self-esteem, and social media play in the life of this bad ass lady.
Fame and authenticity don’t always go hand in hand. We’d love to believe that in climbing they always do, but that just isn’t the case. As someone who makes their living in a very public way within the climbing industry, I’m hyper aware of my own authenticity, and I watch other public figures in our tiny sphere to see how they navigate. Because Sasha is at the top, I watch her closely. In this episode Sasha and I sit down in her house in Boulder, CO to discuss her recent trip to Alberta, Canada. She drove north alone, after a break up and social media firestorm, to climb the Rockies Trilogy first established by Sonnie Trotter. Three 5.14 Big Walls. No small undertaking. She struggled, doubted, pulled it back together and sent, and she found out in a big way how to reconnect to the roots of her climbing. In the past several days, there has been another reported instance of bullying going on in the outdoors sports world, and the loud, swift, and aggressive responses to this, have made clear that many of us still have a lot to think through.Last week, professional climber Sasha Digiulian announced on social media that she has been the ongoing target of tasteless jokes by fellow climber, Joe Kinder. Sascha stated that she had reached out to Joe in private about this to try to resolve the matter, but had received no reply. So, finally, she went public. You can find - and should read, if you haven’t already - in the show notes to this episode on Blister Sascha’s statement, Joe’s apology, and the responses by Black Diamond and La Sportiva, about why they decided to end their sponsorships of Joe.But the reason why we are talking about this here, is because of those alarming number of disturbing responses online and on social media to these events. So in this conversation, I’m joined by Blister’s climbing editor, Dave Alie, to discuss why it’s wrong to assume that this is simply some little, isolated issue in the climbing world; whether Black Diamond and La Sportiva were justified in their responses; and how our own words of criticism -- or support — of any of these parties— can quickly become unfair, tasteless, or unjust in their own right.TOPICS & TIMES:What happened, and why are we discussing it? (0:18)Did Black Diamond and La Sportiva do the right thing?
