What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
Women take on the lion's share of housework in heterosexual partnerships, and that gap in labor becomes a chasm once a child is born. Once Mom is the default parent, it becomes very difficult to even out the distribution of housework and parenting more equally. Mary Catherine Starr, author of the new book MAMA NEEDS A MINUTE, has renegotiated the distribution of labor in her own marriage post-kids and has tips for how other women can do the same. Mary Catherine Starr is an artist, graphic designer, and author. Her hugely popular Instagram account @momlife_comics explores motherhood, marriage, and the double standards of parenting. Ever feel like you're the only one who knows when the kids need new shoes, what's in the fridge, and that the toilet paper supply is dangerously low? Mike Ferguson in the Morning 10-15-24 Mary Catherine Martin, Senior Counsel at the Thomas More Society, talks about the intentionally obscure text of Missouri's Amendment 3. More than simply ending Missouri's abortion ban, Amendment 3 sets up Missouri for a dangerous future. Voters need to clearly understand the extremes to which this ballot proposal will take the state, both now and in the future. She's the attorney who took on Amendment 3 in the Missouri Supreme Court. Amendment 3 will legalize, protect, and fund abortions in all 9 months of pregnancy. But Amendment 3 is much broader than abortion. Amendment 3 creates a new "super-right" to "reproductive freedom." This new right is HIGHER than any other right, higher than the right to abortion under Roe v. Wade - higher than speech, religion, due process, or parents' rights. THANK YOU Mary Catherine George for being my very FIRST guest in 2020 on On The Call, which began the same time as the pandemic. SINCE THEN, Dr. George has accomplished the following: 1) obtained grant dollars to develop a chronic pain relief tool using Virtual Reality 2) learned to make her creative endeavors a priority 3) Health is key to longevity, and so has prioritized her health, mind, body, and soul each day. “The Pandemic taught me a lot, and I feel even more committed to serving others when it comes to learning how to be our biggest expression of who we are.” Cathy saw co-workers dealing with the difficulty of maintaining their mental health; the duplicity of making efforts to return to work, hearing colleagues share about the issues of work and health safety due to the vaccine mandate and the shifting decisions. Cathy strongly believes in autonomy, yet she knows that only 12% of adults understand their health no matter what their background or education. The percentages decrease as individuals are older and have more complicated health issues. Cathy is a Health Psychologist, IRB Regulatory Specialist and Research Program Manager, working for decades within the neurological complications of HIV Disease, Post-Stroke Spasticity, and other research initiatives involving pain and behavior, with an interest in human behavior and how to address wellness and maintain health throughout their lifespan. Her areas of research interest involve stress, anxiety, pain management, and aging within the context of chronic illness such as HIV disease. Dr. George has a special interest in language, technology (use of virtual reality and apps) and how language can influence behavior. Cathy, also a musician, is a comedian as well. Check SINCE THEN page at: onthecallpodcast.com THANK YOU DR. MC GEORGE

I wanted to edit this episode on Christmas day, the holiday to anyone experiencing trauma recycles all the fears. Of all holidays this is the one which seems to recylcle feeling from family and usually its hard to ignore you know due to all the years of exposure. The long term effects of the complaining of parents or siblings on how you haven't done enough for them, the list is long. Tonight's guest is Mary Catherine McDonald PHD her tital is -MCPHD on tik tok. When you hear the title of the book “Unbroken” the trauma response is never wrong. I have had therapy since I was 9 years old on and off until about a year ago. This book puts years of therapy into a chapter. Every page so welcoming to me. I drank in every word and let out a loud exhale at the end of every chapter. The title itself gave me pause. I bought the book on audible throu prime. It was easy I paid 14.95 a month for audible on Amazon and I can listen to all the books. Unbroken the trauma response is real- I couldn't stop listening soaking in every word and finally coming to a lot of understanding about my trauma and the trouble

Mary Catherine Kinniburgh is the co-director of Granary Books, an independent publisher and archives/rare book dealer. As a scholar of postwar American poetry and an archives broker, her activities occur at the intersection of research and praxis, and her writing often focuses on the poetics of archival work. In particular, her research explores making sense of high volume in literary collections. In this talk, Kinniburgh discusses her ongoing series "Messy Archivist," which explores the interstitial qualities of working on archives through prose, poetry, and images. Published by her experimental imprint TKS Books, each "Messy Archivist" is a handmade chapbook that is often organized around a keyword, such as messy, or need. For the fourth volume and this talk, the premise is surface: what might be interpreted as an archival surface, and how does our attentiveness to the relationship between surface and depth inform our understanding of archives, especially at scale? Drawing on Sharon Marcus and Stephen Best's concept of “surface reading” in literary texts, the physics of surfing, what puts the “relief” in relief printing, and Kinniburgh's experiences working on specific archives at Granary Books, this talk will contextualize the concept of surface as a lens for the information overload that necessarily comes with archival work, and a critical approach for the toolkits of fellow scholars and archivists of twentieth century American poetry and beyond.

The police tactic of stop-and-frisk is back in the news and has become a campaign issue in the 2023 elections in Philadelphia. Some candidates for mayor and for city council have suggested that escalating its use against pedestrians in the city should be on the table as a public safety measure. For 12 years, the ACLU of Pennsylvania and co-counsel from the law firm Kairys Rudovsky Messing Feinberg and Linn have been enforcing a settlement in a 2010 lawsuit against the city over the aggressive, illegal, and unconstitutional use of stop-and-frisk by Philadelphia police. In this episode, we hear from the Rev. Mark Tyler of POWER, Yahaira Galarza, a community ambassador for ACLU-PA, and Mary Catherine Roper, former deputy legal director of the ACLU of PA. Mary Catherine is now an attorney with the law firm Langer Grogan and Diver and is co-counsel in the lawsuit Bailey v. City of Philadelphia, the case that challenged the city police department's use of stop-and-frisk. We've reached the point where the political pendulum has at last swung the Conservative way, giving it a working parliamentary majority for the first time in three decades. Despite all his efforts to get that majority in 1874, Disraeli seems to have been surprised by the extent of his success. He took power without a properly worked-out set of policies to apply. In particular, since he was more interested in foreign affairs, he had little in place in the way of a domestic programme. For that he would depend on his ministers, so getting their selection right was a major task. One of the most difficult nuts to crack would be getting Salisbury into his government, if only to stop him sniping from outside. This he pulled off in part thanks to the intervention of the Countess of Derby, though her relationships with Salisbury and other leading figures in the story is worthy of a soap opera. The absence of a good domestic programme left a space open into which the Archbishop of Canterbury was able to insert a nasty piece of Church legislation, in the course of the last ever parliamentary session that would be overwhelmingly devoted to a religious matter. That was in strange contrast with the instincts of Disraeli's government which, despite being Conservative, were strangely progressive socially. Brigadier General Peter Olenchuk's military career came with controversy from the 1960s to the 1970s, which could have put his entire family at risk. In August of 1970, his youngest daughter Mary Catherine Olenchuk was just 13 years old when she was taken from Ogunquit, Maine. Less than two weeks later her body would be found just nine miles away from where she was last seen. Was this a crime of retaliation against her high-ranking military official or was this horrible murder a crime of opportunity, or could it even be the work of a serial killer? Those questions have plagued this small town for decades. Who killed Mary Catherine Olenchuk? If you have any information about Mary Olenchuk's murder, please call Maine State Police at 1-800-228-0857https://www.newspapers.com/image/850215881/?terms=%22mary%20catherine%20Olenchuk%22&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/850215881/?terms=%22mary%20catherine%20Olenchuk%22&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/435545838/?terms=Green%20Berets%20Join%20Hunt%20for%20Girl.%22%20The%20Boston%20Globe.&match=1https://www.zippia.com/answers/how-hard-is-it-to-become-a-general/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_George_Olenchukhttps://www.newspapers.com/clip/71682834/body-of-missing-girl-found-dead-in/https://downeast.com/features/unsolved-crimes-closure/https://truecrimediva.com/mary-olenchuk/https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/27foaq/maines_oldest_cold_case_the_murder_of_13_year_old/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XLnpzC40fYhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/663840475/?terms=Mary%20Catherine%20Olenchuk&match=1https://www.portlandmonthly.com/portmag/2021/06/51-years-cold/https://www.darkdowneast.com/episodes/maryolenchuk

Episode At A Glance: This week, I am joined by my dear friend Mary Catherine Tomlinson and her newly married daughter, Marlee Martin. Marlee shares how they believe a prescription for birth control ultimately led to massive blood clots in her leg, lungs, and heart in the fall of 2021. In this episode, Marlee and Mary Catherine share their journey with Marlee's health, the details of her life-saving surgery, and how their faith in Christ carried them through it all. After Marlee's horrendous experience with birth control, she and her mother strive to educate young women on its dangers. Who Is Marlee Martin? Marlee Martin grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Briarwood Christian School in 2017. She then went on to college at Alabama University. After graduating from Alabama in 2021, Marlee started law school at The University of Alabama School of Law. Marlee married her husband, Jacob Martin on June 18, 2022. Marlee's Story: When she was sixteen, Marlee had a cyst removed from her ovaries. Since then, she has been on and off of birth control in order to balance her hormones and prevent future cysts. Her doctor put her on Yaz, one of the strongest and most dangerous forms of birth control on the market. Fast forward to September of 2021, and Marlee started experiencing pain and swelling in her right calf. She eventually went to get an Ultra Sound done on her leg, but the ER doctors told her they could not find anything. Marlee continued to experience pain in her leg, and after the pain spread up her leg she massaged it out with a foam roller. After that, she experienced being severely out of breath and a dramatic increase in her heart rate. When her heart rate reached 190, Marlee called 911 and went to the hospital. Finally, the doctors performed tests and realized that she had clots in her lungs, heart, and leg. Marlee was eventually transferred to UAB, where Dr. Ahmed performed life-saving surgery on her. A True Miracle: After Marlee was transferred to UAB, it was quickly determined that she needed surgery immediately. The doctors removed 36 inches of blood clots (pictured above) just from Marlee's knee to hip, along with many others. During the surgery, Marlee's heart stopped. Her doctor called for the life-saving machines to be prepped. However, something prompted her doctor to continue removing the clots from her heart as quickly as possible. This decision turned out to save Marlee's life, and her heart started beating right after. Marlee and her family know that this was God, directing the surgeon's hands and sparing her life. After the surgery, countless doctors called Marlee the "miracle girl" because they had only performed autopsies on people with her severity of clots. The Faith That Carried Them: Throughout this entire journey, Marlee and her family depended completely on the Lord to sustain them and comfort them. Days before Marlee's surgery, she journaled out a prayer proclaiming her trust in and submission to the Lord's sovereignty and goodness. Mary Catherine shared that Marlee's surgery showed them how truly trustworthy God is. She shared that as a parent there is always so much she can do for her children. However, during Marlee's surgery, she could do nothing but depend on God to perform a miracle. The Risks of Birth Control: After Marlee's experience, she and her family believe that these clots were caused by her birth control, Yaz. A study that Marlee found said that women who are on that particular birth control are three times more likely to encounter blood clots. When Marlee was first prescribed birth control, the doctor did not share the risks or possible side effects of the medication. Now, both Marlee and Mary Catherine strive to educate young women on these forms of dangerous birth control. Questions Answered In This Episode: What caused these massive blood clots? How did you first realize that something was "off" with your health? Why did these massive clots go unnoticed at first? How did birth control contribute to these blood clots? Where are you on your health journey today? How did your faith impact your journey?
