This star of US adventure climbing shone brightly in the early 2000s with big free ascents on El Cap at a time when few ventured there without aid. Big solos, desert sandstone crack testpieces, expeditions to Kyrgyzstan, Baffin and Paragonia, amongst others, made her one of the most experienced adventureclimbers of her day. Later years saw the adventures continue with the embracing of base jumping and wingsuit flying. Beyond all these has lain a thoughtful and considered approach, always ready to self check and ask twice. Skills that surely came to the fore during tough times around loss of sponsorship and latterly, personal tragedy. Steph lays it all out with a thousand laughs along the way. Such fun, so honest. Part 2 of the amazing Steph Davis interview. Part 1 is episode 174

Steph Davis has been a professional climber since 1991. But simply calling the Moab, Utah local a climber seems inadequate. From three years old, Davis was trained in the Suzuki Method on the piano. She practiced everyday, sometimes for hours a day, until she discovered a passion for climbing. The piano fell silent as climbing became her primary focus. In 2004, Davis became only the second woman to free climb El Capitan in one day. The following year she freed the formation's Salathe Wall—the first woman ever to do so. She's logged climbing achievements all over the world, and has confronted fear while free soloing walls such as the Diamond on Longs Peak. For Davis, climbing is about when to hold on, and when to let go. We talk about her evolution as an athlete—how she went from focusing exclusively on climbing to adding base jumping and wingsuit flying to her repertoire. She describes the sense of euphoria gained from free soloing, and why it can't be replicated. This episode is brought to you by The North Face. Aiming to secure transitional housing for their employees, elected officials approved the purchase of a duplex on 200 South for $825,000. City staff say the house will help outside hires get settled in, with the expectation those employees will find more permanent housing within six months. Plus, climber and BASE jumper Steph Davis speaks with our radio partners about risk, sustainability and inspiration in the outdoors. // Show Notes: // Photo: Moab City will manage a duplex on 200 South as transitional housing for new employees, or those who need housing mid-employment. // Moab City Purchase Study https://moabcity.org/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/5439?fileID=7369

Call me old school, but nothing gets me more fired up than adding a new adventure, climbing or mountaineering book to the collection. So I was excited last month, when Valley Of Giants: Stories From Women at The Heart of Yosemite Climbing, arrived at my doorstep. This anthology, edited and curated by Lauren DeLaunay Miller, is a collection of 39 stories - written and told by the trailblazing, often-times under the radar, women who have been at the center of Yosemite climbing over the past century. While the book of course features stories by well-known valley climbers such as Lynn Hill and Steph Davis, DeLauney Miller has gone to painstaking lengths to include older, more obscure - but equally important stories - as well. The result is a rich and inspiring history of female climbing and adventure in Yosemite Valley.I recently spoke with DeLaunay Miller, to talk about her process for putting this important anthology together. What struck me was the amount of work, and dogged determination required - just to find the stories for the book: Basically a combination of internet sleuthing, scouring the white pages of physical phone books, writing and sending hand-written letters, and cold-calling strangers across the country. It's an impressive feat, and left me feeling that DeLaunay Miller is equal parts climber, librarian, and investigative journalist. So i hope you enjoy my conversation with Lauren DeLaunay Miller - talking about her new anthology Valley Of Giants: Stories From Women at The Heart Of Yosemite Climbing.•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••NotesSpecial thanks to Lauren DeLaunay Miller Purchase Valley Of GiantsProduced by Evan PhillipsEditing & Sound Design by Pod PeakOriginal Music by Evan PhillipsSupport The Firn LinePatreonPayPalMerchSponsorsAlaska Rock GymThe Hoarding Marmot

Throughout August, the show is sponsored by Iffley Road, an independent British brand that champions the joy of running. This week, we look back at the endurance performances at the Olympics, the London Marathon reveal their elite field for 2021 and their new date for 2022. Holly catches up with Olympic marathoner Steph Davis, and this week's Training Talk is all about where you should be with just seven weeks to go until the London Marathon.
In Episode 153, we are joined by Team GB's Steph Davis fresh from her Olympic debut! Steph chats about her experience in Tokyo where her strong controlled run saw her finish in an impressive 39th place and first British woman! Kyle is into race week for the Anglo Celtic Plate 100K where he dons a Scotland vest again, and we've got results from the Scottish Senior Track Champs and other events in Scotland to cover.
In episode 92, I speak with Kevin Quinn, a father of three. A 2.22.12 marathon runner and head coach at Team Real Runners. Kevin was one of the pacers for the Great Britain marathon trails for the Tokyo Olympics, where Steph Davis won and earned a qualifying place. To listen to the conversation with Steph look at episode 89. In 2016, after running 2 hrs 25 mins at the 2015 London Marathon Kev found out he had 4 holes in his heart (largest being 1.78cm) and had to have heart repair surgery to close the 4 holes in his heart. This meant he lost 20-25% oxygen for every heartbeat. The operation was a success and despite getting older, he is now running faster than ever, winning the New York City virtual marathon. We talk about the impact his father and sister passing away has on him today. It's a great and rounded conversation showing the different sides of a runner's life. ————————————————————— His Instagram links are: Personal: @kevquinn_ Coaching: @teamrealrunners ————————————————————— This episode is supported by Let's Do This. By the mid 2000’s climbing was growing, but the ephemeral first ascents were harder to find. Enter BASE jumping. The leaders of our sport stepped to the edge and jumped into the golden age of human flight. With it, a whole new element of risk arrived in climbing. We talk with Randy Leavitt, Chris McNamara and Steph Davis, who helped pioneer the movement.
This week, we spoke to 2:27 marathoner, Steph Davis. After winning the British Olympic Marathon Trials last month, Steph has booked her place on the plane to Tokyo for this summer's Olympic Games. Of all the possible outcomes of finding out he had four holes in his heart, it seems unlikely that it would make Kevin Quinn a better runner. Yet that's exactly what's happened. Following the eight-hour repair operation in February 2016, Kevin has gone from strength to strength. He won the virtual New York City Marathon last year, and recently helped pace Steph Davis to an Olympic qualifying time at the British Olympic marathon trials. Kevin is the founder of Real Runners (realrunners.co.uk), which offers run coaching to individuals, schools and corporations, both in person and online. On the pod today I have Dutch academic, author, and fear expert Roanne Van Voorst. In late 2017, Roanne published a book called Fear: Extreme athletes on how to reach your highest goals and overcome stress and self-doubt. Roanne's book dissects all things fear from how pervasive it is in our daily lives to practical tips to overcome it. Through the lens of names like Lynn Hill, Steph Davis, Cedric Dumont, Alain Robert and Alex Honnold among many others, Roanne's mission is to get to the bottom of what makes these seemingly fearless athletes and coaches tick. Spoiler alert, it's not what you might think. And as a gentle reminder, getting a handle on fear is so important guys. It truly is where the gates to the kingdom either remain locked or are pried open with a whole lot of practice. Before I get into my convo with Roanne, I wanted to mention an upcoming event. A few episodes ago, I introduced you to Tyler Tringas, if you remember he is a successful serial entrepreneur who's latest project is the venture fund Earnest Capital, which helps bootstrappers like you and me raise early stage funding for their businesses. Well, the person who introduced me to Tyler is a mutual friend of ours and part of this podcast community — Eric Shutt, Founder of the brand marketing consultancy, SummitX. This March, I'm partnering with Eric on a 4 day ski retreat for leaders in business and tech in Jackson Hole, WY. I'll be doing a live podcast recording, we'll be skiing a bunch of days at Jackson, and hearing from some of the brightest thought leaders in leadership development - all scheduled around a little Aprés of course. If you or anyone you know is interested, feel free to use the referral code APP for $500 off the registration. If you have any questions hit me up, or head over to summitx.co/trips for more info. Cool, enjoy the show!
What possibilities emerge when we begin to question the tacitly accepted — and easily overlooked — limits that govern who we can be and what we can do? Composer Samuel Adams, rock climber/BASE jumper Steph Davis, and arts leader Ed Yim all push past traditional limitations in their everyday lives by writing music that reaches new emotional depths, scaling cliffs and flying off of them, or making a platform for artists to create without compromise. Canyoneering (Waterfall Rappelling) Podcast Show Notes with Joshua Lambus Joshua Lambus is one of those people who is very magnetizing. He is Kona based and is a world-renowned photographer, check out his incredible photos! Josh is an experience lover whether it's underwater with Tiger Sharks, falling through the sky, walking on a slackline high above the earth (high-lining), or waterfall rappelling, a part of canyoneering. In this episode, we are exploring the world of canyoneering (or canyoning depending on what part of the world you're in). What Is Canyoneering? Canyoneering is more than waterfall rappelling. It is essentially figuring out how to get down a canyon by rappelling (or abseiling), scrambling, climbing, jumping, swimming or other. This is not a walk in a park, it requires many different skills to be able to navigate a canyon safely, and a beginner route could take all day. What's Great About Canyoneering? Every experience is different and requires problem-solving in order to make it out. Josh, was first introduced to canyoneering when he was slacklining in high places (hi-lining), and originally thought canyoneering was a means to an end, meaning it was a way to slackline, however along that process, Josh fell in love with canyoneering. Many times Josh and his friends do exploratory canyoneering. They look at various maps and enter an area that hasn't been explored. 5 years ago, Josh and his friends went to a place that was a black dot on a map, where the shade and shadow met. They found themselves over 400 feet of exposure, which was exactly how much rope they brought (thankfully). They dropped down a 2-tiered waterfall, one 180 feet, and another 200 feet with a small section of ledge between the two. It was breathtaking and was one of Josh's largest rappel. One day Josh took his helicopter pilot friend to a small canyon, quick and easy (8 hours). There were massive boulders, tunnels, old train tracks, and his friend was blown away. The next time he took a flight, he saw the canyon from his helicopter, and it was a teeny tiny canyon and it was a canyon he had never seen before. It's amazing how we pass by things every day and don't realize the secrets the canyons hold until you're in it. Photo by Joshua Lambus What Does Canyoneering Feel Like? The first time you get to a drop and look over that edge (like 100 ft, 150 ft), you first get that feeling of how am I going to do this. Many times people walk to the top of waterfalls, but that is as far as they go. But in canyoneering, you are stepping over that edge and the edge now becomes the beginning. Once people start to go over the edge, their perspective starts to change as new possibilities are created. You go from seeing something as impossible to possible. We are 2-dimensional beings, but once you get into Scuba Diving, Skydiving, or Rappelling, you add in a new perspective and a new dimension you can live in. Sometimes you might be rappelling into a cave with a waterfall, then you might swim through a cave that pops out into a river. Josh never realized this experience was possible until he did it. Photo by Greg Chavdarian Goes to show, that you don't know what you don't know, and you may need to question yourself like Steph Davis, that the Edge is Just the Beginning. The Edge Is Just the Beginning - Steph Davis How Close Are You to Waterfalls? You enter at some point into a canyon, you might be walking along banks, or swimming through a canyon, but there are times when the elevation stops abruptly, and many times, they need to rappel down a waterfall. If they are lucky, they like to rappel down the side of a waterfall, but sometimes because of the way the way the canyon is carved, sometimes they rappel down the center of a waterfall. The thing is, if the rope falls through the water, then the rope could get stuck. Photo by Joshua Lambus Dangers of Canyoneering: You are reliant on gear and gear can fail or ...
